Training to Failure? + POV Training Vids

323 ratings | 6320 views
What is "failure" when training, and do you want to train to meet it? Are you interested in hypertrophy? If you are, then this is what I believe. For more information, see: J Strength Cond Res. 2012 Jul;26(7):1897-903. doi: 10.1519/JSC.0b013e318239c38e. Muscle activation strategies during strength training with heavy loading vs. repetitions to failure. Sundstrup E1, Jakobsen MD, Andersen CH, Zebis MK, Mortensen OS, Andersen LL

thank you James,a question for you if Imay, I'm 59 ,with a bad shoulder, rotator cuff.I try to always leave a little ''in the tank'' when i'm doing an exercise. do ,12 ,15 reps when i'm barbell curling as an example ,could do more . should i put on more weight or up the reps.your opinion would be greatly appreciated. by the way i'm also overweight a good bit . thank you. kindest regards Steve

lol I don't think many youtubers are bigger than you Mr James , that was funny. Dude your fukin huge , subbed you kick ass love your intelligence
Patrick bennett` (1 year ago)
all i know is when i had a huge swole trainer like you, it was never stop before failure, it was him spotting me and screaming GO GO and i got way more swole then without a spotter which means failure is better so i dont get it i guess
bigconan (4 months ago)
It's been shown that you don't need to go to failure to stimulate muscle...going to failure is like an insurance policy to make sure you doing enough...but the bad thing is, going to failure places a huge demand on your recovery system...it takes a lot longer to recover from a failure set than 3 sets short of failure...

Love it!

I have never heard so much good information about building muscle anywhere else on the internet. You are really good and everything you say about food and how to train really makes sense. Thanks!

I'm definitely interested in some full length workouts. I'd like to try this different approach for a few months.
Ben Randall (1 year ago)
The training vids would be great. Do you think having a training partner hold more benefits? i train on my own so can't exhaust the negative part each movement.
adam Jones (1 year ago)
yes. please make training videos. 👍
david blanco (1 year ago)

BRIAN PETERS (1 year ago)
Geez your huge
MrJules39 (1 year ago)
POV videos. yes please!! awesome idea. don't worry if you think they'll be too long, I reckon the majority of us would watch them. I saw a couple of your vids on some of your back routine with the high cables and boy oh boy, has it made a difference! always hated standard pull downs, never really felt anything but this way you showed...brilliant. also the overhand to underhand grip on the straight bar which then targets the lats...so simple but so effective.
TJ Mendoza (1 year ago)
Lifting heavy will definitely build muscle. Reps will also build muscle. Slow & fast twitch both need training. It's different for everyone as far as which one you need more. There isn't a text book answer for everyone otherwise it would be a best seller. You need to keep tabs on what is helping you build and go from there. PS. If you get to this one Jimmy, YOU'RE MY FAVORITE YOUTUBER!!! You got a lot of Heart CARNAL. 👍🏼
TJ Mendoza (1 year ago)
This is PERFECT! In my gym I have guys 1/2 my age lifting 2X my weight and they have 1/2 the muscle I do. 🤔 Even the fake weight king Piana has several videos stating that he only lifts heavy for the camera. I believe EGO is to blame for the greater percentage of men than any other problem they have for building.
Carlos HD (1 year ago)
Haters will always tell shit and conjure their false opinions over those who they envy the most. Period. If you get hate it is a good sign, because you are doing something different.
Nige Ridley (1 year ago)

I would like POV videos for sure! Not just to watch the form involved, but also exercise sequences, varieties/variations, and pacing.
Hassan Mohamed (1 year ago)
man i tried your method by using the first basic exercise as strength training going for lower reps between 1 to 5 then after that any exercise that I well add later is between 12 to 15 reps it works magic and the recovery is more batter thank you very much for your advice.

Eddie's VLOGS (1 year ago)
Yeah, Jeff Cavaliere sparked another debate with his vid. I prefer the KISS method myself. Keep it simple stupid!
James Tiny Vest (1 year ago)
That's what I say, "keep it simple."

KongLuvs (1 year ago)
Yep, Jim, training vids showing everything, including rest periods, too. I'd also like to see you do a detailed vid on TRT and all that you know about it.
Jason Shults (1 year ago)
I've been lifting on and off for 30 years as well. I find that stopping just short of failure works better for me. I get better results and less time debilitated with soreness after the workouts. I learned to go to failure when I was younger. I didn't get the results I wanted for many years. When I started to vary things, do a more instinctual approach, switch routines up, avoid marathon workouts, stopped doing repeated long sets to failure, allowed for adequate recovery, I started to put muscle on.
MrStreetninja007 (1 year ago)
I train like u do far as giant sets and no rest and I'll agree 90% can't keep up at all there simply not used to it but training like that carries over so much in life far as stamina and endurance
Peter Vargas (1 year ago)
Such videos would be of great use to people learning and/or involved already looking for different ideas/methods to supplement their own. More so it would dispel improper techniques being used in the gym when people have no other frames of reference. Keep up the good work you're doing...
JASON FRIEDMAN (1 year ago)
Yep, the videos are a good idea...  I have been lifting for years, but I like to see and learn from what others do. ----- sponge it up!  Talk about the details - such as angles, focus on the rep/muscle at hand, finding the right weight, etc.  I think you're headed in the right direction.  Break down chest workouts from the lat workouts, triceps, bi's, etc. and title them for each video. Example... "Chest Training - How To"   :  Another great resource is Seth Feroce's "How To" videos - They are phenomenal!  THANKS JAMES
James Tiny Vest (1 year ago)
I am going to give it a whirl and see how it works out.
Batojiri1 (1 year ago)
I'd have to agree with the way your average gym goer trains. They train like crap, maybe not even intentionally. But for most, they don't understand the kind of pain required to train the way it takes to get bigger. When it feels like your muscle is so swollen that it puts pressure on your connecting tendon. When you get done with a 1.5 hr long leg training session with around 200-250 reps and you can barely walk straight. Some people just don't get it.
wizard 423 (1 year ago)
yes definitely do some P.O.V. stuff bro. i watch jeff cavalier on athleanx channel now. i really think people need to be shown proper form and lifting techniques. And you have quite a few years of experience. just my opinion.

Yes to POV

Anthony Llabres (1 year ago)
Dealing with horrible tennis elbow. any ideas that work Tiny?
O O (1 year ago)
do you back squat with a straight bar?
guloy123 (1 year ago)
stop playing tennis bro
TJ Mendoza (1 year ago)
This is my BIGGEST problem. I'm not able to hit my biceps 1/2 as much as I could n should 😏
Anthony Llabres (1 year ago)
I have some here, I will certainly try it. I am doing some stretches that I found on youtube as well. Seems like the radial nerve may be entraped, so the stretches actually do feel really good. I hate not lifting and I can't play ice hockey either at the moment. Other that that elbow and forearm....I am raring to go...lol!!!
Steve (1 year ago)
Anthony Llabres stop doing anything with weight with that arm.. for about 3 months. I hated it. but it's the only way I fixed mine.
kyle Hill (1 year ago)
jim the videos are excellent, youre just smashing it,if this was baseball youre batting average would be 955.
TJ528 (1 year ago)
I would love to see a POV workout. my partner and I are just like you. little rest a ton of supersets. but would love to watch a complete week of ur workouts
Sean (1 year ago)
The POV videos would be a good idea specifically because the majority of people have bad form and don't know what they're doing. I see people on a daily basis doing "chest" and are most certainly working their shoulders. Or doing insane things that put them at risk for injury. Showing proper form is what people need most. Love the videos.
David Moller (1 year ago)
I think videos would be a great idea
dirkjan van nifterik (1 year ago)
Can't wait for these videos
no3rdseat (1 year ago)
"When training for HyPERtrophy as uh some people pronounce it, I pronounce it HYpertrophy, (rolls eyes) I don't give a fuck again what you call it and who gives a shit?" LOLz! You make a great point with this- people need to just get into the gym and pick up heavy shit with good form. Dave Draper has been saying this for years on his blog. There's nothing new under the sun- pick up heavy weights, get some sleep, eat some food, repeat for the rest of your life. That's it. Great video James, always enjoy your videos.
James Tiny Vest (1 year ago)
I've been wondering what Dave Draper is up to - always liked that guy's style.
Marcus Black (1 year ago)
I would dig the shit outta the new POV vids.
Todd Touchberry (1 year ago)
yes. would like to see training vids
Hannibal Bites (1 year ago)
What's up Jim you sound fedup?
James Tiny Vest (1 year ago)
Oh, it's been a rough week - it looks like a few of us are going to be guest speaking on bullying to an auditorium of students in the next week or two.  I haven't talked about it here because it is so "sad" to imagine some of the real life crap in the way even small children are growing up now-a-days (I know, not all, but too many and the behavior is too messed up to know is real).
coachbeef1 (1 year ago)
Great idea..POV videos...do it Tiny

Brian Pecsi (1 year ago)
Love starting my Sunday with a video from my man James. for me I have seen better growth on my body doing lighter higher reps
rlmint (1 year ago)
Hi Jim, I'd like to see the way you train POV. I'd like to get big like you! So a workout I can follow would help. Roger
lambdog76 (1 year ago)
pov would be interesting, although tough for you to make as how do you describe the instincts you've developed over all these years?
David Jacquet (1 year ago)
+James Tiny Vest maybe we can make a trade I'll give you my calf genetics for your arm genetics my arms suck but yet I've never done a calf exercise but they are huge
James Tiny Vest (1 year ago)
I think I am going to attempt it based on the positive feedback here.  I'll try maybe calves first, something smaller - plus a lot of folks seem to train calves as an after thought (not the most exciting muscle to train, I guess) but I do train them fairly intensely.
