I HATE being a pharmacist. After 6 years I am DONE. Most of my friends are asking themselves what kinda hell they enrolled into.
Thomas O'Flynn (17 days ago)
How much did he say he makes a year? 140k or 40k pretty bad margins if its 40 k so
Good Fellas (14 days ago)
As a pharmacist I've made 130K...so 140K is expected.

Theres only so much a pharmacists job can be automated with machines. Besides, someone still needs to maintain and fix these machines as well as operate them. Source: I used to be a biomedical equipment technician, basically the guy who fixes all the medical equipment in hospitals/dentist offices.
Thanks good video.

Thank you for this! This is the truth! I had 4 internships. One in retail, another in manufacturing and 2 hospital internships. When I interned at Amherst Lab (an EU cGMP certified toll manufacturer), I fell in love with the job of chemical engineers. Maybe it's just me but not one of those pharmacy jobs resonated with me. I planned to take ChemEng but I noticed AI, IoT and Automation will all take over. So I enrolled in Computer Engineering. Save yourselves, those who felt like I did. Again, this might not apply to everyone who are PharmAddicts, but to those who are starting to feel and consistently notice that you don't resonate with Pharmacy, leave and leave fast. - BS Pharmacy (2011-2015), Magna Cum Laude, Batch Valedictorian Former Pharmacology, Microbiology and Chemistry Professor, Former Licensure Exam Review Lecturer - BS Computer Engineering (2017-2021, Yes, I'm declaring it!!!)

I don't think people should be too discouraged by this. He's working for a retail company that treats him pretty poorly. Big chains like CVS don't make it easy on their employees because the demand is so high. If you're aspiring to become a pharmacist like myself you should look more towards a private company to work for, better benefits, same pay, less stress. Every job is stressful but you have to do what you like. Hope this helps👍🏼

I have been a clinical pharmacist for 20 years. I have done industry, retail and hospital. Retail to me is just about pushing sales and in many ways unethical. I would never sell anything that a person wouldn't need just to push sale up. I love industry as a pharmacist it is the best career, but getting into it is really hard. After that being a hospital pharmacist and eventually becoming a prescriber and specializing is really worthwhile.
Michael Yim (1 year ago)
How hard is it to find a job as a clinical pharmacist? I want to become a pharmacist specializing in oncology, but not so sure anymore after reading so many threads. I would love to do something health related as I love chemistry, but I don't want to spend money just to find out I can't find a job later on. I know it's bad right now for retail pharmacist, but how hard is it for clinical pharmacist to find a job after residency?
R.N N (1 year ago)
Heres a question for you. Before electronic perscrip. are you trained to read a doctors written perscription? Do you ever get underground offers to become a Breaking Bad pharmacist making 7 figures?
Rebel Pete (1 year ago)
*Big Pharma is nothing but a criminal organization funded by secret society networks like the Rothschilds and Rockefeller clan. Ever asked yourself why this multi-billion dollar industry puts so much effort into creating harmful drugs and vaccines which have been proven to undermine the development of the immune system in young children? Funny that the Medical establishment still hasn't found a permanent cure for cancer and aids after decades of research, but they're still supporting and recommending all this crap which does nothing to get rid of the cause. Holistic physicians on the other hand who seem to had found a cure have died in very mysterious ways and others have been banned from the Medical institutions and can no longer bring their findings into practice. This whole system is based on profit and the dead of millions worldwide every year. And if you're one of those stupids thinking that I'm a conspiracy nut think again and take a good look at the world. I can also tell you that some hospitals have been guilty of experimenting drugs on elderly people because well they're old and useless according to them. And it's not only U.S but Europe as well.*
anglekan (1 year ago)
I always wanted to become a biochemist. I wanted to work within biotechnology. Short story, I never finished school and got out before incurring any school costs. Now I look back and see how much biochemistry has merged with other information science and how I enjoy simply listening to scientists on YouTube. So it's like I can interact with the industry online as an outsider, but not have to burden the financial costs and limits on career. The point is take a good long look at your area of study and discern if it's more of an interest or a living.

Your education should be, first and foremost, a cultivation of your mind. If during this stage of growth and development, you happen to stumble upon a path you're comfortable with, that's great. If not, the training and understanding you've gained from university will never be wasted or taken away from you: your mind in this state can always be put to use towards whatever goals you set for yourself. Education is not a complete waste. Kevin spends too much time around youtubers thinking the grass is greener on the other side.

Love this!!! I am at a bit of a crossroads as well and its great to hear what things are really like once you enter the workforce in any particular field. After graduating from a top US school and then working as a legal assistant for a few years, and also doing a pre-dental postbacc there are definitely a lot of things to consider, I am getting cold feet about my decision after volunteering at a dental clinic and hearing from recent grads what the field is actually like after graduation definitely different from their expectations and lots of a regrets.

I don't know if you will see this because this is kind of an old video. However I use to be a pharmacy student (P1) in a high ranking school (Top15). There were 3 reasons why I dropped out. First one is I was doing it for the money. That was my first big mistake. If you are not passionate about what you do you will regret it for the rest of your life. Second is the cost, You will accumulate 150k in debt which is equivalent to a entry level super car btw, and it will take years to pay it off. It is a very steep investment and you will need someway of paying it off. The third is the job market, Pharmacy use to be hot in 2005/2006 but the job market today is not so great because of the surplus of grads coming out from the new pharmacy schools. Anyone with a basic understanding of economics will know what supply and demand is. Since the supply of pharmacist is greater than the demand for them there will be, not only less jobs but companies have complete control of you salary. In the future pharmacist may not even have 6figs anymore because of the number of unemployed grads will rise and grads will have to be less picky (would you take the 80k job or be jobless). Its funny how the young pre-pharmacy students can not see this. I hope they avoid pharmacy until the job market gets better but even then I rather be passionate and love what I do, than work at the medical fast food store we call the pharmacy.

on a scale of 1-10?? how good at math do u have to be for pharmacy? and, if i do take pharmacy as an undergraduate course, i want to start my own business instead of working in a pharmacy and hospital. I want to create my own products like natural shampoos, cosmetics, etc... Does pharmacy help with that? or do i not need to learn pharmacy to do that. help?

hey kevin or engineered truth this is a for yall. I am from houston, tx i am currently confused on if i want to pursue pharmacy, my parents really want me to do it, but im really not sure, i think i have more of entrepreneurial mind but i like stability. Can you give me some advice on what to do, also alot of people are saying the industry is getting saturated and i am scared if i do get into it there wont be any jobs for me. please reply!
James Cardelli (2 years ago)
I've been a pharmacy tech for 12 years and trust me when I say this; if you're not sure don't do it. Pharmacy school is so expensive and you don't want to spend all that time and money working on a PharmD only to find out you hate the work. my advice, work as a tech first and get a small taste of what it's like to work in a pharmacy and then decide from their if you want to go to pharmacy school.

There is an oversaturation in the pharmacist job market currently and I don't think it will get better.  I work in long term care which is still pretty bad but not as bad as retail.  I would pursue pharmacy if I knew there would be long term care jobs available in the future but sadly I don't have that power.  Given the facts and my own research, I still don't know if I should move on to something else or pursue pharmacy knowing the risks.

Kung Lao (3 years ago)
+blah Well I think I understand it a little better now. Thank you for answering I really appreciate it.
CrazyChemist (3 years ago)
+Kung Lao Population is getting older and living longer so there will always be jobs. Most of the people you hear complaining about work want to work and live in a certain area and are not open to moving. For instance, if you live in CA and try to work in LA (like the guy in the video) have fun applying against many people for an open position. If you live in the bay area or surrounding area they beg and plead for you to work for them. If you are willing to work in areas that are not main cities then there is plenty of work. They are safer and normally healthier environments. As far as the number of schools it does not matter too much. People like to be in a position where there is a limited supply so they can make demands or have horrible work ethics and still be wanted. More graduates will just fill holes where more people are needed. I would be more worried about how many import pharmacists they bring over from other countries on work visas. Basically, it is what you make of it. Be open to moving (you would be surprised how beautiful areas outside the city are), have a strong worth ethic and treat people well. Doing that will ensure a long happy pharmacy life. If you work in hospital work inpatient. Don't ever take an outpatient job they will burn you out fast. Try not to do mail order either. They will burn you out as well.
Kung Lao (3 years ago)
+blah Are you a pharmacist? if so I have two questions if you could bother to reply. 1.) What do you think about the new pharmacy schools opening across the country and 2.) do you feel your job is threatened by this new supply of pharmacists.  I hear a lot of confusing responses to these two questions especially the second one.
CrazyChemist (3 years ago)
A lot of these type of people that do not like pharmacy never really worked in pharmacy prior to getting their degree. Either parents or expectations pushed them into the field because it pays well. A large amount have zero intercommunication skills and end up in some cubicle looking over data for insurance companies. You have to have thick skin and a strong work ethic to handle all the patients and demands. If you are a fast worker and enjoy working then you should be fine.  If you are doing pharmacy here is the key thing. Know what you are talking about and be confident when you talk. People will respect you more and listen to you. If you listen to this guy or both of them the one that hates it says "um" every 3 seconds which is horrible. That is just distracting and patients will see it as a sign of uncertainty. The other guys voice is really soft and talks a million miles an hour. Patients find that disrespectful and standoffish. I been in pharmacy for 20 years and everyone smiles when they see me and treats me well. This was earned from not doing what I said above. Just remember those tips.

I'm an intern at a grocery pharmacy and I love it! They don't work us like tyrants, patients drop off their scripts and say "I've got some shopping to do, take your time", and we don't have to work crazy hours or holidays. Its the dream pharmacy job. (only downside is that the pay is not as competitive as CVS or Walgreens, but its still good)

UnivMDPharmD (3 years ago)
Good video! However, I felt Kevin didn't do a great job explaining the saturation of the pharmacy job market. What he should have explained in a bit more detail is how debt start compounding after the first semester. Typically, tuition for pharmacy school costs about $15.000 to $25,000 per semester. When you compound that mark, which only adds with every semester by the way, you are left with an ugly mark. That would be fine if the market allowed the student an opportunity to work full-time, paying off that debt little by little. Unfortunately, many states are not giving the students this very opportunity. That is not right at all; when schools tell their students that they will find employment after the education and a lot of this hard work goes away in vain, it becomes very disheartening to just think about the burden that these people will be left with for the rest of their lives. With a saturated job market, it often comes down to who you know rather than what you know. Is that a health care system that the public should rely on? A person who knows more people than proper knowledge of medication and its affect on public health? These are the issues that Kevin should have spent more time describing. Either way, you do an excellent job with your videos and I encourage you to keep up the good work. Perhaps you can ask him to do a video encouraging students to pursue PA, medicine and fields that aren't so affected by threats of automation due to corporate pressure. Thank you.

I don't know what the pharmacy industry is like exactly, but I agree with some things that are relevant with me. Particularly, communications issues. I take a drug, prescribed by my doctor. The last time I went in, I forgot to get my script filled, so I emailed the doc saying to fax the prescription to the pharmacy, but the pharmacy never got it, so I called the pharmacy to request the prescription from my doc, but he never got it. I will have to make a special visit, half way across the city, just to pick up the script and deliver it to the pharmacy. It's been a nightmare, as I am physically dependent on these drugs.
