Poultry & The Hormone Myth (long version)

117 ratings | 44793 views
One of the most common, and frustrating, questions for U.S. poultry producers is why hormones are used to produce today's poultry products. Of course, the actual answer is NO HORMONES are used. To address this continuing misinformation, U.S. Poultry & Egg Association has prepared a new video to explain the scientific, economic and legal reasons hormones are not needed or used by the U.S. poultry industry. There are two versions of the video (long & short). The short version is precise and gets to the gist of the video's message quickly. The long version provides more detail for those who are interested. This is the long version.

hey rocker101m. I work for a major poultry feed manufacturer in Canada. This year we will make 1 million tons of feed. A large percentage of that is poultry feed. There are NO hormones and steroids used in the feed. In fact Mr Rocker if you can find either added hormones or steriods in our feed I will give you a million dollars. Maybe do some real research before opening your mouth and showing your ignorance!

If protein is so important to life, where on the periodic table of elements can one find protein?
Dr Seethe (8 months ago)
where is my supplements for hydrogen then?
David (1 year ago)
So getting good sources of carbon and other elements, building blocks of live, ought be the aim to attain good health rather than seeking elemental bonds?
Mole (1 year ago)
...because protein is not an ELEMENT.
jk jellyfish (2 years ago)
David, organic molecules (including proteins) are basically chains of carbons. Of course, there are other elements attached to it like hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen eg...

If  can get  this food enriching stuf in my poor country for my growing chicken & It has  a real effect on the rate of chicken growth in comparison with not using it. This does mean: 1- It is available in food form 2- It is cheap enough that everyone in my village can afford it 3- It is sure effective & practical to use I think you are paid by some producers to publish this video abusing your position as a professor  It is a pity

By the way, the video never stated or even insinuated that Dr. Watkins was unbiased, they stated that she was a poultry science professor at the University of Arkansas in the video. But just because she isn't "unbiased" doesn't mean she isn't right. I work in the poultry industry and everything she said is true.
Mole (1 year ago)
What? Unbiased? She simply is saying: NO HORMONES etc. Can you show me where can I buy chicken feed with hormones and steroids? I want to feed my... chickens. I can't wait for you to show me supplier :). I can help you: http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/catalog/pets-livestock/chicken/chicken-feed-treats Can you find me ONE with hormones and steroids?

regarding the "UN-biased expert" Dr. Susan Watkins featured in the video: Dr. Susan Watkins, Extension Poultry Specialist at the University of Arkansas has been awarded the Arkansas Poultry Federation Chair of Poultry Science. thepoultryfederation [dot] com/news/dr-susan-watkins-receives-endowed-chair

May I borrow the video to add the Chinese subtitle in order to spread the truth? Most of us cannot understand English very carefully.

Commercial chickens are carefully selected and bred to produce birds that will best thrive in today’s modern poultry facilities. As a result, these birds are a much healthier and faster-growing stock than the chickens of just a few years ago. Raising poultry outside exposes birds to the elements and predators and raises the risk of disease.

Great video! This myth is spread worldwide and it is sad to see how people simply don't believe the facts. Congrats to US Poultry & Egg Association for this incredible initiative. At the Brazilian Poultry Association we have released similar videos (although simpler) giving the same message. Thumbs up!!!

the only artificial chemicals included in the feed are medications to prevent coccidiosis which is a very contagious respritory disease that is spread by wild birds and can wipe out a flock in a matter of days. The medicated feed has strict withdrawl dates that are closely monitored to ensure that harvested birds don't have any medication in their system. Roxarsone was discontinued over a year ago from the US. All of the chicken in the United States is tested by the USDA to make sure it is safe.
elhamon08 (1 year ago)
Coccidiosis is low pathogenic disease that affects the digestive tract of birds.
Erv Comer (6 years ago)
May not be giving them hormones but they're certainly being given a lot of other types of chemicals. Chicken feed can also include Roxarsone, an antimicrobial drug that also promotes growth which contain arsenic. You can't raise 50 billion chickens annually as a source of food, for both their meat and their eggs, feed them a bunch of chemicals and then tell us that it's safe!
