I dieted down and got too small though I'm natural it wasn't for me. Now, I'm back to where I started but trying to it the right way. I see this as trial and error, but now I will up the protein much higher, up water, and cardio let see how this goes.
beaglegod1 (4 months ago)
Steven Encinas I am in the same situation cut down about 20 pounds starving myself. Gained 10 back now starting this. How has your progress been?
Robert222 Lewis (1 year ago)
ok now im Torn lol, there are these vids that say Fast for 24-48hours to burn fat, and that if you eat all the time you will teach ur body to burn food instead of fat , then you have James who i respect a great deal saying i need to eat all the time so my body doesnt think its lacking in calories and doesnt Hold onto Fat, both views make logical sense , Arrrggg!!!! lol

rance davis (1 year ago)
Actually even sylvester stallone has said you need to stay on a high protein diet in order to burn fat and not only maintain muscle but also increasing muscle, lay off the carbs, live on protein, ie poached chicken, tuna etc along with some steamed veg
Vernon Ray (1 year ago)
I live on the other side of the world, do you think we can try some training long Dis?

"This is not a sprint. It's a motherfucking marathon. It's a lifestyle. For life." I really like this quote. Especially because it just came out naturally, out of the moment.
Robert222 Lewis (1 year ago)
hell yea man! i should put that on a poster and put on my wall actually, people forget that it is a lifestyle not a race in a few months to some finish line lol, this dude is really experienced and knowledgable i think

Dude you're inspirational AF!!!! I really want to thank you for all you do to help out brother!!
Nick Martinez (1 year ago)
Hi James, I hear ya when you say no deficit, so how many daily calories to lose fat? Maintenance, +200 surplus, +500 surplus, etc.? And how much protein for a male? Appreciate it.
Makes sense to me thanks for the info James. When I go to cut I'll give it a try.
ĜĦØŲŁ1ϟϟĦ (1 year ago)
Well, what if my goal is to just get slim? i'm not one to WANT to be muscular, but i've come to your videos because your one of the few people who makes actual fucking sense I currently weigh 260, i'm 5'9 and i'm only 17 i'm way overweight but i've cut pop, out of my diet and implemented constant water to my body, not a gallon a day, but constant water access, any recommendations James?

Question Everything (1 year ago)
From what I read anabolic steroid usage is bad because it doesn't keep your tendons in pace with your gains; if you build mass on your biceps after lifting more than you normally could, your tendons don't adjust as fast as the muscle grows. And if you tear a tendon, you're fucked for life. Think I read that in Rob Kennedy's "Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding". Great videos though, I'll be watching more you're a pretty down to earth dude, look great for your age.
Joe (1 year ago)
Depending on dosage of course, especially true for those not already strong, and also remember that certain compounds like nandrolone have collagen synthesis benefits and can help with this issue
Kubensis (1 year ago)
Yeah, that is true. You have to pace your self with them, you can grow way quicker though. They won't be bottle necking your gains that much.

Thanks for this video. I've only ever lost fat when I simultaneously gained muscle. I had no idea what I did right during those periods and the overwhelming majority of experts out there say that's not how the body works.

can you please do a video on intermittent fasting? there is new school that are telling people to eat only in an 6-8 hour window in 24 hrs, and fasting the rest of time. I am really trying to understand which is better, many meals or fasting
christop672 (1 year ago)
I've been at a plateau for a few months after going from 250 pounds down to 150 (now 160 from gaining lean mass) over the last 2 years. I'm definitely a lot leaner than I was before but still clinging to some fat unfortunately. I do weight training 3 to 4 times a week(not super heavy since I'm physically disabled but as much as I can) and 20 min of cardio every day but I still can't get rid of it so I'm definitely gonna give these few tricks a try. Worst thing that can happen is I gain a few pounds if it's not working and I just go back to my current diet...and god knows I need to drink a lot more water too now matter what. Thanks a lot for this, sir!

New to the channel and I'm loving your videos! I'm currently on a weight loss journey and I have a question I feel your qualified to answer. I started my diet back in March and weighed in at 350. I lost 100 pounds since then and I'm at the point were I don't know if I should start taking some focus off my cardio exercises and focus more on muscle building. My target weight is going to be 210. I'm worried if that I start to focus more on my muscle building now that it's going to make it harder for me to reach my 210 pound weight goal. Should I reach my weight goal and then start working towards a more muscled physique or start now?

Twin Turbo (1 year ago)
I read online a story about some dude that had to pay for 2 seats on an airplane because he couldn't fit in one seat, that was his wake up call, he went on a diet where he ate a very small meal or snack every 3 hours, cut out pizza, beer and some other junk. His typical dinner would be a large pizza with pop, he not only had to change his diet but "the way he lived". He went from eating 20, 000 calories per day to about 5000, then went down to 3000, he did this for awhile along with a simple workout plan and got under 200lbs of lean muscle, he had so much fat that after it was gone he had to have surgery to remove all that excess skin still hanging on from the fat loss. What does this tell me ? Keep it simple, a small meal or snack every 3 hours and regular workouts. The bottom line is, if you do anything long enough (6 months - 1yr) it becomes your way of life. If you want to get leaner you have to change your way of life from negative eating patterns. Hey James I like your videos and everything you say resonates well.

Good job on banning certain trolls. Debate is good for thinking, but if people take undue advantage of the platform and spew hate as part of 'debate' then they need to be silenced. Or else this channel would become a cesspit of hateful vitriol like so many other fitness channels.

or you could be in the group that died because they listen to the internet and not research.. research first then do
James Tiny Vest (1 year ago)
Really?  Which group is that?  Sure, read, study, but if you think laymen can interpret scientific studies (whether the study concludes correctly or not) and then explain it in a You Tube video and that strongly influences your opinion, then I strongly would disagree with the logic in that.  Once you collate your information and form your understanding, then you have to be able to successfully apply it - many people are "study wizards" but they do not experience any beneficial result from that info in the real world.  If it works . . . it works.  If it doesn't produce the result you are after then it doesn't matter how many papers proclaim it a success - it is a fail for you.  I am in excellent health at 53 - my doctor actually is amazed by me and says I am like 1 percent of the top 1 percent in physical health of guys my age. (whatever that equates to - his actual words not mine)
The Baron (1 year ago)
See, this is the kind of video that will get nerds like myself interested in working out a lot more, because the presentation is frank yet the information makes sense from, as the man says, a strategy perspective. There IS intelligence and wisdom to be gleaned from bodybuilding, it's just the common presentation is so asinine and contrived that individuals with some brains can't stand it.
The Baron (1 year ago)
Thanks for the reply! You're an inspiration.

Anthony Coca (1 year ago)
I have asked you for help. Like all the other bodybuilders online here. USELESS
James Tiny Vest (1 year ago)
But you don't want help - you have tried to con me into skyping with you under the guise of nutritional adivse but you were just going to choke your chicken, weren't you?  But, as I told you . . . I don't fucking skype.  You pestered me through email and out of the goodness of my heart I tolerated you, hoping you were a decent person but NO, you are a very odd, creepy stalker type so now you are banned from here - we must get rid of the riff raff or we will never acquire more female guerrillas!  Shit cannot be left just lying about or girls will not want to come around - very basic concept.  AND all that aggravation and you were not even subbed - yet you were subbed to Blahaha!  I ban subbed a-holes, certainly you must leave from us with a quickness.

Lots of good information. It would be helpful if the information was distilled and delivered more directly.
Jason Shults (1 year ago)
Thanks, James. You cemented some things here that I'd been playing with the last 18 months or so. It's good to hear it from one who knows far more than I do, from sheer time under the bar and living the lifestyle. Trying to help my spouse figure out how to lose some weight. Hadn't considered the body mass stasis you speak about. In this and other videos, even though I've experienced it. I've raised my own weight from 155 to 165 to 180 to 195 using the same technique. This has been over a couple decades. Every time I have plateaued, it has been a good feeling, knowing that it will be a cinch to stay there if I choose, or move up farther. I've played around a bit with 210-215 now that I am on TRT, but I haven't been sold on the amount of time and effort it takes for me to stay there, mostly in food consumption. I also have to lift very regularly. I keep wondering if I can plateau there, or if I even want to. I do a lot of things that require a lot of endurance, and I'm not sure I want to pack another 20 lbs of bodyweight.

Jason Shults (1 year ago)
Some of us like the guy, and want to hear him speak, not just the basic ideas. He's a good guy, and very knowledgeable. And it is free to you. Consider yourself lucky. When I was younger, there was no YT, no older guys who have btdt and are willing to put the info out there for everyone.
chiponbloc (1 year ago)
Are u saying to get into ketosis when u up the protein to diet down? or should it be around 50-100g carbs and rest all protein/fats? Would greatly appreciate a answer please
Anthony Coca (1 year ago)
can you do an online consultation of dieting and nutrition. And online training. you will be compensated
James Tiny Vest (1 year ago)
But you do not want online diet and nutritional consultation, Anthony.  You are a creepy borderline stalker who I have tried to be kind to and held out hope that you actually might need such help - but all you want are flexing vids because you are fucked up in that you cannot accept NO as an answer.  If you do not refrain from all of your abhorrent behavior here and in email, then I will ban you, too and you can bother someone else in my stead.  Or maybe I SHOULD make you a video and post it here showing my Guerrilla family how persistent and rude you are in your numerous emails.

good info. my sister and husband needs help but they are so stubborn, scared and lazy. there should be a gym just for fat people so people like them don't feel so intimidated. i'm moving close by so i plan to help them. the water trick will probably help kickstart them, thx!
James Tiny Vest (1 year ago)
NO ONE should be intimidated to go to the GYM.  It is a GYM - it is the place to exercise.  EVERYONE is welcome - hell, they let busters in for God's sake, and they don't even tend to actually use the equipment much.

Anthony M (1 year ago)
James quick question, are you taking about a Keto diet? If not how much protein should I be eating on a cut?
Anthony M (1 year ago)
+E. R. Thank you!
E. R. (1 year ago)
Don't know if you got your answer. I'll post here for others just to be sure. I would say that this is actually Not a ketogenic diet. Ketosis is the reliance of ketones in the body to create energy. What James is referring to is gluconeogenesis, which results in the generation of glucose from non-carbohydrate sources. In this case, protein. James' thesis is that the process of glucneogenesis creates a caloric deficit in the body. I do not know if it works so well for this reason, but what I certainly know is that it worked very well for me. As for the science behind it, no idea. Point of reference for you: Ketogenic Diet: Protein:20 Fat:70 Carbs:10(%) Gluconeogenesis: Protein:70 Fat:15 Carbs:15(%) Rough indication, but you get the idea.
billytheweasel (1 year ago)
Yep, I've long thought the thermic effect of gluconeogenisis would counter somne of the excess protein calories. It's just the extra glucose... and my love of carbs.
