You are not natural? It's irrelevant so I didn't want to ask. I was thinking you were pretty massive for a natural lifter.

Are you all natural ?? Do you use any gear?
Lance Milliken (9 months ago)
Lenny Donofrio I had shoulder tendinitis around four months ago so I hear you. Best advice that I can give you is to rest until it feels OK to start pushing again. I'm 38 and have been at this for around 20 years and I can tell you that it is better to take some time off if that's what your body is telling you. Otherwise the nagging injuries can start to build up and at some point they will become permanent and debilitating. Best of luck
Lenny Donofrio (9 months ago)
Lance Milliken haven't been training for about 2 weeks. I got horrible elbow tendonitis. Had a cortisone shot, but DR doesn't want me training. Just hitting legs and cardio
Lance Milliken (9 months ago)
Lenny Donofrio no worries bro - happy lifting!
Lenny Donofrio (9 months ago)
Lance Milliken I stand corrected. You are correct...
Lance Milliken (9 months ago)
Lenny Donofrio I just re--watched and at three minutes and 45 seconds, verbatim, he says "I am not natural"

Great vid, great advice. Young ones have such a leg up on knowledge as opposed to us guys that made all the beginner errors in the 80s.

WTF is the rush where recovery is concerned. If you're sore....REST! sore is the the result of accomplishing the first step in building muscle IF you rest & eat accordingly. This is basic knowledge but it always seems to be a stumbling block that fails to be truly accepted which is probably a side effect of the instant gratification that is expected in today's society .If you've over done it you'll know it & hopefully take note on what not to do next time or you'll wisely accept you're trying to accomplish your goals faster than you're body/cns can tolerate at the given time .Other than that, accept the relative pain of playing with iron, balance it with food & rest along with patience & you're results will come sooner than you think. Here's a little food for thought. Regardless of gear or any of the suspect aspects of bodybuilding, ever notice that anyone like Tiny, with loads of muscle & knowledge is usually in their mid 30's & beyond ? that's a testament to the years of work & discipline that can't be bought or sold, no exceptions. The human body can only be forced beyond its potential to a point for so long even with gear. In the end only patience, consistency, food & rest will tell you the truth.

A good one if you can't get to the gym all the time: DAY1: Shoulders+back (some abs + light biceps) DAY2: chest+tri (some abs+ light biceps) DAY3: legs + lower back (separated with different bicep curls) all 3 workouts around 30 sets about 1.5-2 hours starting with heavy compounds and working down. I've actually had better results doing this than training 5 days, but everyone is different.

The way you train on gear is different than natural lifters point blank. If your really talking it old school they used to implement the fullbody workout three to four times a week! Leroy Colber!!!!

I will overtrain till the day i die. Our bodies are insane. Theres atheletes out there that push there bodies further then bodybuilders. ITs called under eating

This whole " natural" vs "not natural" is just overated. All training is training and it is same for all. Only thing that might be different and varies from person to person is their testesterone levels and supplements.Better nutrition equals better recovery. Higher the test levels better gains. If you have to supplement with androgens than you are just equalizing the field since trt is only doing so. I am on TRT and my levels are now where they should be for my age vs being low prior. In this day and age of toxic environment and foods full of synthetic estrogens one has to wonder hey many man are low on T. It is all by design but that is another topic. If you are on TRT you are still natural. Going over TRT doses and using testesterone analogs is not natural.
G FUCKURSELF (1 year ago)
What about pot use for help with the diet? Looking at nature one can see how to build muscle. Does the cheetah have mass, nope. It often has to run down its prey. Look at the lions and what you see is short bursts of extreme activity followed by eating and lots of rest. Just makes sense in a way.
Sho Kosugi (10 months ago)

Let us clear up some facts. Total training time increases with steroids - yes. Natural athletes need higher FREQUENCY bur lower volume per muscle group, since the duration of synthesis is significantly shorter than on anabolic steroids. (Only up to around 48 hours while it can be multiple times that on steroids) - Meaning after doing a muscle once, it will grow for a longer duration. Please use google for relevant studies. So he is right in that your training volume and time will significantly increase on steroids. But if you want to build muscles natural, you should be in the gym 5 - 7 times per week.

Sunday - Chest and Triceps (90 minutes) Monday - Back and Biceps (90 minutes) Tuesday - Abs/Rest Day (30 minutes) Wednesday - Shoulders (Up to 1 hour) Thursday - Arms (Up to 40 minutes) Friday - Abs/Legs (1 hour) Saturday - Rest Day My nutrition is on point (I think).
Brutus 632 (1 year ago)
You do biceps with back on Monday, then you say you do arms Thursday? Also, your triceps never seem to get a rest as you work them hard Sunday, then triceps get worked a lot with shoulders (pressing) , then you do arms again Thursday, then back to triceps on Sunday. You're working triceps every two days.
John Lebesis (1 year ago)
You spend the same amount of time on your shoulders as you do Ab/Legs day. Something doesn't seem right there ;)
Anthony Ali (1 year ago)
60 minutes just for shoulders ? that's insane,
Fuck off
Calvin Nicodemus (1 year ago)
Akkun E Why not put Friday's workout Thursday and vice versa. That eliminates all overlap from the schedule. Right now, for shoulders, I assume you're doing overhead presses, then triceps the next day. Not ideal.

I have trained 31 years training 1 body part a day. I throw in shrugs, calves and abs more frequently but only a few sets a day. Diet and absorption of nutrients👌. My diet is very nutritious and I am at the best shape of my life at 46. This guy is the real deal. I agree 100%
shad johnsen (1 year ago)
In training one body part per day, are you meaning one major group of muscles per day like chest, back, shoulders, arms, legs? That's the schedule I used to follow and would try to alternate and and calves every other day.
Calvin Nicodemus (1 year ago)
shad johnsen That's what it means.

Great subject. I'm just doing each body part once week.......monday legs, weds chest, friday back and arms. Something like that.....I vary it up a bit. Sometimes just 2 days a week. If I'm sore, I try not to work that muscle group till I don't feel sore.
Calvin Nicodemus (1 year ago)
El Tigre You are correct, never train a muscle which is sore from the last workout. Those micro tears have a way of becoming macro.

Grzegorz Durda (1 year ago)
Recovery time is 100% genetic. You can improve it somewhat, but recovery ability is 100% pre set by genetics. Its the single factor that all weight lifters have to figure out individually. Its what separates the Hard Gainer from the Easy Gainer.

Good video James, I use to train for 3H even with gear and I hardly grew. I've tried on the PPL split to reduce it to around a hour, but it seems like it can't be done. So it normally takes me about 1.5 Hours to train. Do u think this is fine as long as I hit the cals to grow with nutrition at the end of the night? I tend to train with higher reps, super sets as well, or do u think fewer sets is better? And on a side note. Consuming protein, how much do u intake? Is 1g/Lb ideal? Seems like if u go up to the 250-350 range for a 200 lb person, it takes a toll over time if your not drinking much water as well. Any thoughts on this?

Sickening A man's natural test production reduces by about 10% per decade after his 20's. You just can't recuperate from the workout and overcompensate without exogenous testosterone. Working your ass off only to minimize your muscle loss is not enjoyable, and I don't like stamp collecting. 53 years old.

listen to this man, he knows he's shit. And use your head when u listen to people. It doesn't make logical sense to work out twice a week and expect results.
mathias maccabee (1 year ago)
James, would you or have you already done a video on testosterone replacement therapy? I'd love to hear your opinion on this subject. The reason being is that I lost my left testicle over 10 years ago to cancer and I'm now 47 years old. I never have had my testosterone levels checked but I sometimes think my levels may be a little low. Can you please recommend any good "natural" suplaments that can safely boost testosterone levels in men my age? Any info or advice you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks and yes I thumbed up and sub'd to your channel.
mathias maccabee (1 year ago)
Less is more.....more often than not. If you work out hard but don't get the proper amount and type of nutrition at the right times and you don't get enough rest and recovery time between work outs then you are doing more harm than good to your body and your just pissing in the wind.. Or better yet, you're like a truck stuck in the mud, you're just spinning your wheels and going nowhere fast.

Do guys on gear HAVE TO train once a week, definitely NOT, but that's not the point. Guys on gear can train a body part only once a week is because PEDs artificially maintain protein synthesis elevated throughout the entire week and studies on the matter have confirmed this (we saw this with Dorian Yates and Menzter), whereas natural guys have to work out that bodypart several times a week to naturally maintain it elevated (we saw this with Steve Reeves and his era). We live in a society where kids don't want to spend the years it takes to develop muscle, let alone figure out what their body responds to in terms of frequency, volume, intensity, protocols, and how to go about it (periodization). That's why so many guys on gear train a body part once a week, in my opinion ... laziness and spoiled brats or because they get frustrated with lack luster results. It also allows genetically inferior trainees some level of achievement and satisfaction, even if they carry around muscle they haven't earned. My two cents.

Do you think age is a factor, as it may have some effect on physiology.. igf production, ect.. I mean even joints and tendons may not be as strong with age. I would assume even if exogenous supply is present age is still somewhat a factor on frequency and workout duration. I know every year i increase my training intensity and duration/frequency.. but i'm starting to feel it. lol I'm just fighting nature
OsricRexor (1 year ago)
Always interesting to hear what a veteran says about training. I tend to train 12-15 sets for every main muscle group once a week and 6-10 sets for the smaller once (biceps, triceps, forearms and so on). A workout takes about 45-60 minutes plus 30-60 minutes cardio. Have tried out a lot of programs in the past but this seems to suit me the best.
franco (1 year ago)
That is backwards. If your natty you don't recover as quickly so you would train less. You can train more on gear. You also hear from crossfitters that it's not possible to over train. This is asinine as well.
franco (1 year ago)
TheHardcoreLife Agreed
TheHardcoreLife (1 year ago)
its well known that crossfitters are fucking idiots.
Batojiri1 (1 year ago)
Dustin Totten I'd like to see the average person try to do 12 sets of legs and not be on the floor afterwards. 12 sets isn't just 12 sets, it really does depend on how much weight with how many reps that will be a deciding factor. Your training intensity makes all the difference. If you are training to failure or on the razor's edge of failure, you may not need 12 sets to have an effective work out.
Dustin Totten (1 year ago)
Overtraining really is a lot harder than people think. A normal person is not going to be mentally strong enough to do it. It really is more of an issue for pro/olympic athletes. All these guys saying if they do more than 12 sets they are going to lose their gains are just cheating themselves.

Great channel! I'm natty, 45 years old, have trained for 25 years, and find that full-body training works for me, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Each muscle is trained three times per week. I hit each muscle with 9 sets at 8-10 reps with 20-30 seconds rest between sets. I focus on compound exercises such as dips, t-bar rows, chin-ups, hack squats etc. I'm not as big as you, but I follow low carb/keto and don't need carbs from food, other than a handful of spinach a day. Gluconeogenesis from protein works for me. I eat 1-1.5 g of protein/lb of bodyweight. Most of the remaining calories are from fat. I've tried the 5 day split, upper/lower splits etc, but find full-body works best for me. Protein synthesis three times a week. What are your thoughts? Would love your perspective. I'm 5'10" 175 lbs and last measured 10% body fat about 3 weeks ago.
Calvin Nicodemus (1 year ago)
alexander101207 I personally could never do 54 sets? per workout. Frankly, if I do 24, I'm dead.

Calvin Nicodemus (1 year ago)
MrArmiani At 267 your weights are not impressive. I did that, naturally, at 225 in 1982 at 19 yrs. old. But why all the hostility. Dude is honest about it. Save your anger for the fake nattys, making $ selling supplements.

ak47ava .dman (1 year ago)
my last workout, i did 3 sets of 5 on flat bench, 3 sets of 5 on shoulder press, 2 variations of lat pulldowns, 20 minof cardio, the whole workout was around 1hr 20 mins. i traing upper body 2 or 3 times a week. i feel i recover faster without training to failure and the weights are going up. legs i train to failure on leg press but i train em once a week.
Jeff Fannin (1 year ago)
watched all your videos and love the channel. Also sent you a message asking about specific rep ranges for the assistant exercises after the main compound exercise in a workout. And you do lighter weight correct? Lastly, you say your not natty, do you strictly use test now since your older? You don't think natty's need more? Thanks, keep up the great videos!
