Side effects for this antibiotic are worse than infections it's prescribed for

The FDA just announced that it will require more warnings on the label for a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones because the side effects they cause are worse than the actual infections they are commonly prescribed for. Side effects include permanent muscle and nerve damage, when the infections they're prescribed for usually clear up on their own, without the need of any medication. Co-trimoxazole and sudden death in patients receiving inhibitors of the renin-angiotensin system

06:15
Read the full research: http://www.bmj.com/content/349/bmj.g6196 Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) are among the most commonly prescribed drugs in clinical practice. Each year, more than 50 million prescriptions are dispensed in the United Kingdom and more than 250 million prescriptions in the United States. Both drug classes increase the risk of hyperkalemia, which occurs in up to 10% of patients and is particularly common in patients with other drug and disease related risk factors for hyperkalemia. Co-trimoxazole (a combination antibiotic containing trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole) is commonly prescribed for the treatment of urinary tract infection and is listed on the World Health Organization’s essential medicines list. Each year, approximately five million prescriptions are dispensed in the United Kingdom and 20 million in the United States. Approximately 80% of patients receiving co-trimoxazole develop increases in serum potassium concentrations and 6% develop frank hyperkalemia. In this research, the scientists set out to determine whether the prescription of co-trimoxazole with an ACE inhibitor or ARB is associated with sudden death. They found that in older patients there is an associated increased risk of sudden death. Unrecognized severe hyperkalemia may underlie this finding. When appropriate, alternative antibiotics should be considered in such patients.

Antibiotics are medicines used to treat bacterial infections. There are different types of antibiotics that work against different strains of bacteria and some types of parasites. When used properly, they either kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause a particular health problem. This in turn helps your natural immune system fight the infection. But antibiotics often have side effects that cause other temporary health issues. Some common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, vaginal yeast infections, allergic reactions and inner ear problems. 1. Eat Probiotic Yogurt When taking antibiotics, it is highly recommended to include yogurt with ‘good bacteria’ in your diet. Eating yogurt that contains ‘live cultures’ (also labeled as probiotic yogurt) helps your body recover from diarrhea, one of the common side effects of antibiotics. These live cultures are gut-friendly bacteria that provide a layer of protection in the intestines and help generate lactic acid to get bacterial toxins out of the body. 2. Eat Fermented Foods or Take a Probiotic Supplement. Apart from yogurt, many fermented foods naturally contain a high amount of probiotics. So, in addition to yogurt, include kombucha, kefir, sauerkraut, pickles, pickled beets, pickled turnips, pickled carrots and kimchi in your diet. 3. Eat Garlic. Garlic is a natural antibiotic that helps kill harmful microbes without the side effects of antibiotic medicines. Also, it contains an important compound known as allicin that protects your kidneys and liver from the potential damage of antibiotics. 4. Take Milk Thistle Supplements. Taking traditional antibiotics can be hard on your liver, which is responsible for breaking down the medications you ingest. To protect your liver from any damage due to a course of antibiotics, the herb milk thistle is very effective. The rich antioxidants in this herb help protect the liver. 5. Sip Ginger Tea Whether you suffer from diarrhea, nausea or vomiting due to prescribed antibiotics, ginger is effective in dealing with these side effects. Ginger’s natural antibiotic property helps prevent and treat many health problems caused by bacteria. Fresh ginger has an antibiotic effect against food-borne pathogens as well as respiratory and periodontal infections. 6. Eat Bland Foods. Some of the most widely reported side effects of antibitoics include diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. To counter these issues, it is advisable that you eat only bland food during and after a cource of antibiotics. These types of food inlcude dry crackers, plain bread, white rice, etc. 7. Drink Apple Cider Vinegar Tonic. Apple cider vinegar has antibacterial properties that help fight harmful bacteria in your body. Also, it is a good remedy for controlling diarrhea, one of the common side effects of antibiotic medicine. 8. Drink Enough Fluids. To counter dry mouth caused by medicines and a mild loss of fluids from diarrhea or vomiting, drink more water. Drinking an ample amount of water throughout the day will keep your body hydrated. For a more-severe loss of water, drink fluids that contain water, sugar and salt to help replace electrolytes that the body needs. 9. Stay Healthy. One way to deal with side effects of antibiotics is to stay healthy so you don’t have to take them for long. Take steps to support your health in the following way. 10. Take Antibiotics as Directed. Last but not least, you must always take your antibiotic medicine as directed by your physician. For instance, some antibiotics should be taken only with water. Others need to be taken with food in order to increase their absorption in the body and ward off an upset stomach, a common side effect of antibiotics. This might be news for many, but this is reality. The pharmaceutical industry and prescription drugs have their place in our medically advanced society. This is one reason why prescribed drugs are causing some serious side effects, compelling doctors to prescribe more pills to deal with those side effects. It is important to carefully analyze the pros and cons of prescription drugs before making a decision of whether to take them. Here are 10 highly dangerous prescription drugs you should know about. 1. Methotrexate and Other Chemotherapeutic AgentsAnother prescribed drug that can be harmful is methotrexate as well as other chemotherapeutic agents. This drug is used alone or in combination with other medicines to treat different types of cancer, such as breast, head and neck, lung, blood, bone, lymphoma and uterine cancers. It is also available as an oral tablet. The most common side effects of this drug include mouth sores, nausea, fever, dizziness, stomach pain, tiredness, chills and an increased risk of infections. When taken along with other drugs and for longer durations, methotrexate can cause serious, life-threatening side effects. Antibiotics work by killing the bacteria or stopping them from growing and multiplying. But overuse as well as misuse of these drugs can cause long-term health problems. In fact, antibiotics are inappropriately prescribed for conditions that do not even respond to them. Long-term use of such drugs has made many infections more virulent and untreatable. Some of the most harmful antibiotics that are commonly prescribed are Levaquin (levofloxacin), Vancocin (vancomycin hydrochloride), Bactrim (trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole), Cipro (ciprofloxacin), Avelox (moxifloxacin HCL) #PrescriptionDrugs, #that, #ShouldKnow, #haveSeriousSideEffects, #HomeRemedies #cause, #prescription, #drug, #include, #know, #serious, #cholesterol, #antibiotics, #blood, #effects, #severe, #prescribed, #drugs

[11] Powerful Antibiotic Could Be A Prescription For Danger Pt. I (Fluoroquinolone Toxicity)

03:41
February 13, 2015 10:51 PM CBS Miami http://miami.cbslocal.com/2015/02/13/powerful-antibiotic-could-be-a-prescription-for-danger/ Andrea Siani doesn’t get around her home like she used to, not since she was treated for pneumonia last winter. She was prescribed the generic version of Levaquin, a powerful antibiotic. “It was a prescription for 10 days. On the ninth day both my arms went numb. That night I woke up around midnight, and it felt like flames were coming out of my elbows,” said Siani. Thousands of patients have reported similar reactions to Levaquin, one of a powerful family of antibiotics known as Flouroquinlones. So just how powerful is this class of drug? Two of the prescribed uses are for anthrax and the plague. Levaquin has a black box warning from the Food and Drug Administrtation for increased risk of tendon ruptures, muscle weakness and impacts on the central nervous system. Dr. Marylee Worley is a professor at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Pharmacy. “A black box warning is the most serious warning that a medication can get before really being pulled from the market,” explained Worley. “It is powerful,” said Dr. Charles Bennett. He is one of the nation’s leading watchdogs for prescription drugs. He said the big problem with flouroquinolones is inappropriate use. “We are talking about going into the physicians office, having a little sniffle, walking out with an antibiotic and shortly after having these kinds of problems,” Bennett said. He has filed two citizen’s petition with the FDA seeking to expand the black box warning to include mitochondrial toxicity, meaning damage can occur within a patient’s cells. The second petition wants to highlight the potential for serious psychiatric events. Caroline Eagan was given Levaquin to treat a sinus infection. Eight years have passed and the former daycare provider has never been the same. “One day I can be okay, on focus. And another day I can’t even talk to anybody because they are not making sense. It sounds like they are not speaking English,” said Eagan. Levaquin is made by a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson. In a statement, they said the antibiotic, “Has been used for more than 20-years to treat infections, including those that might be serious or life threatening. When used according to the product labeling, Levaquin has been proven to be a safe and effective medication.” Dr. Worley has a word of caution for people considering taking it. “We know this class of anitibiotics is being overly prescribed. If you start experiencing pain, especially around your ankle, call your doctor immediately,” advised Worley. Eagan regrets her doctor didn’t give her any warning. “You don’t be normal and then three days after taking a medication, and it was the only medication I was on, you can’t walk,” said Eagan. In a statement, an FDA spokesperson said the agency is reviewing the citizen’s petitions, adding they consider drug labels living documents so they can be updated, as new safety information becomes available.

Sulfa Allergies vs Sulfite Allergies

Sulfa Allergies versus Sulfite Allergies. Diagram: Sensitivities to sulfonamides, otherwise called sulfa drugs, are normal. Sulfa drugs were the main effective treatment against bacterial diseases in the 1930s. Despite everything they're utilized as a part of anti-infection agents and different meds, similar to diuretics and anticonvulsants, today. Individuals with HIV/AIDS are at specific hazard for sulfa affectability. Since their names are comparative, individuals frequently mistake sulfa for sulfites. Sulfites happen normally in many wines. They're additionally utilized as an additive in different sustenances. Sulfites and sulfa drugs are synthetically random, however they can both reason unfavorably susceptible responses in individuals. Sulfa Allergy: *Symptoms of an unfavorably susceptible response to sulfa include: *hives. *swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, and throat. *drop in circulatory strain. *anaphylaxis (a serious, hazardous response that requires prompt therapeutic consideration). Once in a while, instances of serum ailment like responses can happen around 10 days after a sulfa sedate treatment starts. Side effects include: *fever. *skin ejections. *hives. *drug-initiated joint pain. *swollen lymph hubs. You should contact a specialist promptly on the off chance that you have these manifestations. Stay away from the accompanying drugs in case you're hypersensitive or have an affectability to sulfa: *antibiotic mix medications, for example, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Septra, Bactrim) and erythromycin-sulfisoxazole. *sulfasalazine (Azulfidine) utilized for Crohn's infection, ulcerative colitis, and rheumatoid joint inflammation. *Dapsone (used to treat uncleanliness, dermatitis, and certain kinds of pneumonia). Not all medications that contain sulfonamides cause responses in all individuals. Numerous individuals with sulfa hypersensitivities and sensitivities might have the capacity to securely take the accompanying pharmaceuticals: *some diabetes drugs including glyburide (Glynase, Diabeta) and glimepiride (Amaryl). *non-steroidal calming drugs (NSAIDs, for example, celecoxib (Celebrex). headache drug sumatriptan (Imitrex, Sumavel, and Dosepro). *some diuretics including hydrochlorthiazide (Microzide) and furosemide (Lasix). Sulfite Allergy: Side effects of a hypersensitive response to sulfites include: *headache. *rash. *hives. *swelling of the mouth and lips. *wheezing or inconvenience relaxing. *asthma assault (in individuals with asthma). *anaphylaxis. In the event that you encounter more genuine side effects of a sulfite sensitivity, contact your specialist. Hypersensitivity requires crisis medicinal consideration. As per the Cleveland Clinic, individuals with asthma have between a 1 out of 10 and 1 of every 20 shot of having a response to sulfites. Sulfites are normal in handled sustenances, fixings, and mixed drinks, for example, red and white wine. Sulfites happen normally in wine amid aging, and numerous winemakers add them to help the procedure along. For as long as two decades, the U.S. Sustenance and Drug Administration has expected winemakers to show the notice "contains sulfites" if levels surpass a specific edge. Numerous organizations deliberately add the mark to their items also. Individuals with sensitivities ought to dodge nourishment items with the accompanying chemicals on the mark: *sulfur dioxide. *potassium bisulfate. *potassium metabisulfite. *sodium bisulfite. *sodium metabisulfite. *sodium sulfite. allergies, asthma, cat allergies, sun allergy, symptoms of allergies, food allergies, eye allergies, allergic asthma, gluten allergy, latex allergy, pollen allergy, egg allergy, allergy shots, shellfish allergy, seasonal allergies symptoms, food allergy rash, seasonal allergies, allergy rash, skin allergy, allergy medicine, sulfa allergy, sulfa drug allergy, sulfa allergy home remedies All Photos Licensed Under CC Source : www.pexels.com www.pixabay.com www.commons.wikimedia.org

How antibiotics work , Part 2 - Everything You Need To Know - Dr. Nabil Ebraheim

13:27
Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes how the antibiotic works. •Cell wall: 1.Penicillins 2.Cephalosporins 3.vancomycin Inhibit the cell wall synthesis by blocking the cross-linking. The penicillin-binding protein enzymes are involved in the cross-linking. Beta-lactams have a ring that binds to the enzyme and prevents the cell wall synthesis. When beta-lactam inhibits the cell wall synthesis, this will cause damage to the bacterial cell. If you are allergic to penicillin or cephalosporins, you may be given clindamycin or vancomycin. Vancomycin may be given if methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is suspected or encountered (vancomycin is essential in the treatment of MRSA). Patients allergic to clindamycin may be given Cipro. The penicillin-binding protein is involved. mecA gene allows a bacterium to be resistant to antibiotics. This is how MRSA develops. The bacteria produce an altered penicillin-binding protein that can do the cross-linking but has no affinity to Beta-lactam antibiotics. It renders the bacteria resistant to the effects of penicillin and cephalosporins. Vancomycin is used in these cases. The transformation from one bacteria to another. Plasmid. Three main mechanisms by which resistant genes can be transferred: 1.Conjugation: the bacteria may conjugate their DNA from one bacteria to the other through transformation via a sex pilus. 2.Transformation 3.Transduction There is another mechanism which produces an enzyme that will inactivate the drugs before it reaches the bacteria. This is beta-lactamase which is capable of destroying the beta-lactam antibiotics. The bata-lactam ring of the antibiotics is destroyed and will not be able to bind to the wall. •Cell membrane: polymyxin. Polymyxin will increase the cell wall permeability. •Folic acid synthesis: sulfonamides, trimethoprim. •Nucleic acid synthesis: •DNA synthesis inhibitors: 1- Fluoroquinolones: ciprofloxacin (gyrase). DNA gyrase is responsible for removing the superhelical twist so that DNA replication can proceed. The fluoroquinolones inhibit the DNA gyrase. Using cirpo may contribute to the condition of Achilles tendon rupture. 2- Metronidazole (direct effect on DNA). Bacteriocidal that creates free oxygen radicals that are metabolic bi-products which disrupt the DNA. Can be used to treat pseudomembranous colitis c.diff. RNA polymerase inhibitors: rifampin. RNA polymerase is an enzyme that produces messenger RNA. The synthesis of messenger RNA is called transcription. Messenger RNA is DNA dependant and uses it as a template. Rifampin targets and inactivates the RNA polymerase bacterial enzyme. Rifampin works against staph infection and the Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB). Staphylococcus aureus that is phagocytosed by the macrophages causes them to become intracellular (antibiotics cannot reach). 30S: 1.tetracyclines (doxycycline): avoided in children less than 12 years (impaired growth, and teeth discoloration) may be used to treat Lyme disease. 2.aminoglycosides (gentamycin): possible problems with ears or kidneys. It is used to treat ope fractures type III. 50S: 1.Clindamycin: may cause pseudomembranous colitis (c.diff). monitor patients who are taking warfarin (Coumadin). It can wipe out the bacteria flora from the gut (intestinal bacteria secrete vitamin K). usually used if the patient is allergic to penicillins or Ancef. Clindamycin creates C/diff that is helped by antibiotics. Use cirpo if allergy to clindamycin or flagyl if c.diff is created. Clindamycin will achieve the highest concentration in bone. 2.macrolides (erythromycin): be aware of Coumadin interaction. 3.Zyvox (linezolid): used in resistant gram-positive bacteria 4.chloramphenicol: watch out for anaplastic anemia. Other points of interest •When you add antibiotics to the cement, the maximum effect occurs at 2 weeks and there will be no effect at 8 weeks. •Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL) is a cytotoxin produced by Staphylococcus aureus and this toxin may cause necrotizing fasciitis or necrosis of the tissues. It is usually found in the community-acquired cases of MRSA. There will be more complex infection. More incidence of DVT and PE. 10 Prescription Drugs that You Should Know have Serious Side Effects | Top 10 Home Remedies: https://www.top10homeremedies.com/news-facts/10-prescription-drugs-know-serious-side-effects.html. Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq6puMSvUFeRbquVqU4jekw?sub_confirmation=1 When consulting a doctor because of illness or other health concerns, it stands to reason that you follow the doctor’s advice and take whatever medicine you are given. It’s what most of us do. But do you know that many prescribed drugs can do more harm than good to your body?In fact, prescription drugs are one of the leading causes of death in the world. This might be news for many, but this is reality. The pharmaceutical industry and prescription drugs have their place in our medically advanced society. It is not possible to treat sickness with a prescribed pill, without dealing with the root cause behind the problem. Methotrexate is also prescribed by many rheumatologists and other practitioners to treat rheumatoid arthritis. This drug comes as a solution for intravenous (IV) injection, which needs to be injected into a vein. These serious side effects include bleeding as well as liver, kidney and bone marrow damage. During such a situation, you may suffer from vomit that contains blood, black tarry stools, unusual vaginal bleeding, yellowing of the skin, urinary problems, blisters on the skin, peeling skin and extreme muscle weakness, to name a few.2. AntibioticsAntibiotics are a popular class of prescribed drugs that often restore health and even save lives.Antibiotics are helpful in treating infections caused by bacteria, such as some forms of bronchitis, pneumonia and urinary tract infections.

Antibiotic Medicine Tablets and Injection Taj Pharma

# Antibiotic Medicine - Tablets and Injection For more details please visit: www.tajpharma.com Antibiotics are a group of medicines that are used to treat infections caused by some germs (bacteria and certain parasites). They do not work against infections that are caused by viruses - for example, the common cold or flu. Antibiotics are normally only prescribed for more serious bacterial infections, as many infections get better on their own. Correct use of antibiotics is absolutely essential to help reduce antibiotic resistance. Germs become resistant to antibiotics over time, which then makes them less effective. The World Health Organization (WHO) says "the world urgently needs to change the way it prescribes and uses antibiotics" as antibiotic resistance is a major global threat. What are antibiotics? Antibiotics are a group of medicines that are used to treat infections. Antibiotics are sometimes called antibacterials or antimicrobials. Antibiotics can be taken by mouth as liquids, tablets, or capsules, or they can be given by injection. Usually, people who need to have an antibiotic by injection are in hospital because they have a severe infection. Antibiotics are also available as creams, ointments, or lotions to apply to the skin to treat certain skin infections. It is important to remember that antibiotics only work against infections that are caused by bacteria and certain parasites. A parasite is a type of germ that needs to live on or in another living being (host). Antibiotics do not work against infections that are caused by viruses (for example, the common cold or flu), or fungi (for example, thrush in the mouth or vagina), or fungal infections of the skin. See the separate leaflet called Microbes, Germs and Antibiotics to read more about the different types of germs which can cause infections. Occasionally, a viral infection or minor bacterial infection develops into a more serious secondary bacterial infection. In this case, antibiotics would be needed. There are various antibiotics available and they come in various different brand names. Antibiotics are usually grouped together based on how they work. Each type of antibiotic only works against certain types of bacteria or parasites. This is why different antibiotics are used to treat different types of infection. The main types of antibiotics include: Penicillins - for example, phenoxymethylpenicillin, flucloxacillin and amoxicillin. Cephalosporins - for example, cefaclor, cefadroxil and cefalexin. Tetracyclines - for example, tetracycline, doxycycline and lymecycline. Aminoglycosides - for example, gentamicin and tobramycin. Macrolides - for example, erythromycin, azithromycin and clarithromycin. Clindamycin. Sulfonamides and trimethoprim - for example, co-trimoxazole. Metronidazole and tinidazole. Quinolones - for example, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and norfloxacin. Nitrofurantoin - used for urinary infections. As well as the above main types of antibiotics, there are a number of other antibiotics that specialist doctors or hospital doctors may prescribe for more uncommon infections such as tuberculosis (TB). The rest of this leaflet only discusses antibiotics that your GP may prescribe "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Use gloves in saltwater tank | bacterial staph infection | sulfamethoxazole side effects

Use gloves in saltwater tank | bacterial staph infection | sulfamethoxazole side effects. I got a bacterial staph infection and was tested for MRSA after working in my saltwater tank with cuts on my hands. That was STUPID! thousands of different types of bacteria, along with rotting fish food, fish waste (detritus) and fish urine (ammonia) are all through your reef tank. If you put your hands in, you're asking for trouble, especially if you have cuts anywhere on your hands or fingers. I contracted a bacterial staph infection which I thought was an ingrown hair on my hand. But then another painful itchy bump started, then another, then another. It didn't stop so I got tested. The pus from one opened and got on my hand, which instantly started more of these pus bumps. I had one on the back of my right hand half the size of a golf ball. I couldn't use my hand due to the pain. It was a bacterial staph infection. I will never stick my hands in the tank again without gloves. I've been fighting this infection for 3 weeks. The last week was the worst. I had severe chills, a constant fever, nightmares, no sleep, body aches and joint pain. So, please wear gloves when working on your tank. I never thought anything like this would happen but it only makes sense that it would, given all the nasty things living in your saltwater aquarium. 'I contracted sepsis from a UTI – and it could have killed me'

'I contracted sepsis from a UTI – and it could have killed me': http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/03/26/child-could-have-left-without-mother?playlist=structure%3Anews. Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuVR_kQguLSGAtNCy571N-w?sub_confirmation=1  Eight days after giving birth Nina Khaira would be back in hospital: this time fighting for her life.  Nina – a 38-year-old dentist from Cornwall – had contracted sepsis, triggered by a urinary tract infection that spread to her blood.  The strain of bacteria responsible – ESBL E. coli – was resistant to most antibiotics, including those her GP had prescribed. Dr Nina Khaira was back in hospital just eight days after giving birth to her daughter, Vega. She had contracted sepsis from an antibiotic-resistant bacteria  Shortly after giving birth in October 2015 she developed severe lower back pain which her doctor diagnosed as a kidney infection and she was prescribed trimethoprim – a routine antibiotic.  It initially helped the pain but did not kill the infection. Within two days she had a fever and became shivery. She told her husband: “I think I’m going to die”. Long read: | 'I almost died': the true cost of antibiotic resistance  She was rushed to A&E and vomited in the corridor on arrival. Because the trimethoprim had not worked doctors did not administer antibiotics straight away.  Instead, they waited for the results of her blood and urine tests, which confirmed the presence of an E. coli infection resistant to all but two antibiotics.  Nina had sepsis and was moved to her own room where she was given paracetamol, fluids and a rare antibiotic – aztreonam – administered three times daily, intravenously over a 12-day period.  For 10 days she showed no sign of improvement. Her temperature continued to spike and her blood pressure became so low that doctors feared she was in septic shock, a life-threatening condition.  Eventually, the infection was beaten back and she was discharged. It took her nine months to fully recover and she has since taken out private health insurance for regular UTI check-ups.  Nina has returned to full health but the thought of what could have happened still haunts her.  "I could have died, I could have left this child and my husband alone,” she says.  Protect yourself and your family by learning more about Global Health Security  #I, #contracted, #sepsis, #from, #UTI–, #could, #have, #killed #SuperbugsAntibioticresistance, #News, #Antibiotics, #Standard, #GlobalHealthSecurity

Urinary Tract Infection in Children

13:04
Urinary Tract Infection in Children. Overview of urinary tract infection (UTI) in children:. A urinary tract infection (UTI) in children is a fairly common condition. Bacteria that enter the urethra are usually flushed out through urination. However, when bacteria aren’t expelled out of the urethra, they may grow within the urinary tract. This causes an infection. The urinary tract consists of the parts of the body that are involved in urine production. They are:. *two kidneys that filter your blood and extra water to produce urine. *two ureters, or tubes, that take urine to your bladder from your kidneys. *a bladder that stores your urine until it’s removed from your body. *a urethra, or tube, that empties urine from your bladder to outside your body. Your child can develop a UTI when bacteria enter the urinary tract and travel up the urethra and into the body. The two types of UTIs most likely to affect children are bladder infections and kidney infections. When a UTI affects the bladder, it’s called cystitis. When the infection travels from the bladder to the kidneys, it’s called pyelonephritis. Both can be successfully treated with antibiotics, but a kidney infection can lead to more serious health complications if left untreated. Causes of UTI in children:. UTIs are most commonly caused by bacteria, which may enter the urinary tract from the skin around the anus or vagina. The most common cause of UTIs is E. coli, which originates in the intestines. Most UTIs are caused when this type of bacteria or other bacteria spread from the anus to the urethra. Risk factors for UTI in children:. UTIs occur more often in girls, especially when toilet training begins. Girls are more susceptible because their urethras are shorter and closer to the anus. This makes it easier for bacteria to enter the urethra. Uncircumcised boys under 1 year old also have a slightly higher risk of UTIs. The urethra doesn’t normally harbor bacteria. But certain circumstances can make it easier for bacteria to enter or remain in your child’s urinary tract. The following factors can put your child at a higher risk for a UTI:. *a structural deformity or blockage in one of the organs of the urinary tract. *abnormal function of the urinary tract. *vesicoureteral reflux, a birth defect that results in the abnormal backward flow of urine. *the use of bubbles in baths (for girls). *tight-fitting clothes (for girls). *wiping from back to front after a bowel movement. *poor toilet and hygiene habits. *infrequent urination or delaying urination for long periods of time. Symptoms of UTI in children:. Symptoms of a UTI can vary depending on the degree of infection and your child’s age. Infants and very young children may not experience any symptoms. When they do occur in younger children, symptoms can be very general. They may include: *fever. *poor appetite. *vomiting. *diarrhea. *irritability. *overall feeling of illness. Additional symptoms vary depending on the part of the urinary tract that’s infected. If your child has a bladder infection, symptoms may include: *blood in the urine. *cloudy urine. *foul-smelling urine. *pain, stinging, or burning with urination. *pressure or pain in the lower pelvis or lower back, below the navel. *frequent urination. *waking from sleep to urinate. *feeling the need to urinate with minimal urine output. *urine accidents after the age of toilet training. If the infection has traveled to the kidneys, the condition is more serious. Your child may experience more intense symptoms, such as: *irritability. *chills with shaking. *high fever. *skin that’s flushed or warm. *nausea and vomiting. *side or back pain. *severe abdominal pain. *severe fatigue. The initial signs of a UTI in children can be easily overlooked. Younger children may have a difficult time describing the source of their distress. If your child looks sick and has a high fever without a runny nose, earache, or other obvious reasons for illness, consult their doctor to determine if your child has a UTI.
