Scientists Study Why Elephants Rarely Get Cancer
A recent study has found that elephants have a low rate of cancer despite their massive number of cells because they have 20 times the number of cancer-fighting TP53 genes as humans. Cancer researchers are finding inspiration from a surprising animal.  A recent study describes the largely effective mechanisms that elephants have in order to fight off the disease which is caused by the replication of mutated cells.  What interested scientists is the paradox that elephants are large animals that undergo innumerable cell divisions during their decades-long lives, but less than five percent of their captive members get cancer.  The research team decided to compare their biological makeup with those of humans who rely on two copies of the TP53 gene--one from each parent--to fight cancer by fixing a mutated cell, keeping it from multiplying, or triggering cellular death.  Based on an analysis of blood taken from elephants, they found that these animals had about twenty times the number of cancer-fighting genes as humans.  The scientists exposed elephant cells to damaging elements like radiation, ultraviolet rays, and chemicals, and most simply killed themselves off to stop the progression. The hope is to use this research to improve cancer treatments especially for high-risk populations like those born with only one functional TP53 gene.

Why do so many golden retrievers get cancer? Massive study hopes to find out
SPRINGFIELD, Va. -- The sweet and playful golden retriever is one of the most popular dog breeds in America, with a special talent for getting even so-called grown-ups to join in the fun. But, as Kris Campesi has learned through painful experience, they also rate high on another scale."Goldens have a high probability for cancer," she explained. That rate is about 60 percent, one of the highest in the dog world. Campesi recently lost one golden to cancer and now 7-year-old Malachi has a brain tumor."They're such a part of your life, and when it's time for them to go it's hard," Campesi said.Looking for answers, she entered 3-year-old Nicodemus, who's perfectly healthy, into a national study of nearly 3,000 golden retrievers. The goal is to understand why the cancer rate is so high."I have to keep track of everything they eat, the water they drink, the chemicals I use around the house," Campesi said. Nicodemus even has something called a "whistle" that stays with him all the time so it can record his activity and sleep. Golden retrievers bring comfort to those affected by Las Vegas shooting Stray golden retrievers from Turkey find new life in U.S.Veterinarian Laney Rhymes takes samples of his hair and nails during frequent medical exams."They're looking for environmental stuff that the dogs might be exposed to that would concentrate in the nails," Rhymes said.Even while he's giving blood, that tail keeps on wagging. Campesi hopes the study will eventually help all dogs including hers to live longer lives. She's not the only one who hopes that will be the case -- Nicodemus is also a therapy dog for special needs children, and they're counting on him to live a long and healthy life.

The Dog That Can Detect Cancer
For more news visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevision Follow us on Facebook ☛ http://facebook.com/NTDTelevision It's a special dog: a military Belgian Shepherd that has been trained to detect signs of cancer in patients' urine. According to French scientists, the dog can do it far more accurately than any currently available scientific technique. Here's more. A French army sniffer dog would normally be trained to identify explosives or drugs but Aspirant is different. The Belgian Shepherd's handler, Corporal Anthony Fremont, says the dog is now as adept at identifying prostate cancer as it is contraband. [Corporal Anthony Fremont, Army Dog Handler]: "At first we thought it was a joke. But we inquired a little bit when we heard the news, and we found out that similar experiments had been conducted abroad, in the United States in this case." The French version of the idea began in a laboratory in Paris where Olivier Cussenot researches urinology at the Tenon Hopital. Knowing that a dog's sense of smell is roughly 200,000 times better than a human's, he hopes to develop an accurate automated test for a form of cancer that is notoriously difficult to track. [Olivier Cussenot, Prostate Cancer Specialist]: "The ultimate goal would be to be able to determine that a particular smell represents a particular cancer which would allow a machine to do the same job. In that case, you could standardize the task enough to establish a diagnostic test." And Aspirant has proven that it might be possible. In tests, he identified hidden samples of urine from patients with and without prostate cancer. The dog correctly identified 63 of 66 samples from cancer sufferers and even one from a donor who did not know he had the disease. [Olivier Cussenot, Prostate Cancer Specialist]: "If he sits near the sample, that's the way he says that the sample is positive. And we will then consider that this person's urine contains cancer cells, or at least contains molecules linked to prostate cancer." The World Health Organization says around 250,00 lives a year are lost to prostate cancer and the researchers hope Aspirant's nose can sniff out a way to get that number down.
