Earlier in the year, I posted two videos on this subject. The first one was about lifestyle factors that you need to modify for optimal glucose control and the second was about foods to eat that will help you with your goal. If you've not watched them, go back and do that first before considering supplementation, as modifying those things may be sufficient to help you get to your goal. If you're already eating well and have changed your habits yet you still feel that you're hungry, tired, irritable and generally struggling with an unstable blood sugar, then you may want to consider using supplements to help move you along. In today's video, I discuss the top 7 supplements for balancing blood sugar which in turn will help control your appetite and cravings and help you lose weight. Remember though, before beginning any supplementation with vitamins or herbs, that you discuss it with a health care practitioner familiar with your case, particularly if you are currently on medication for diabetes or hypoglycemia. Never eat huge meals To help your body regulate blood sugar levels: - Avoid fasting - Don’t skip meals - Know your carb counts How many carbs per meal are ideal? A typical starting point is 45 grams per meal for women and 60 grams for men, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA). But some experts now recommend a greater reduction in carbs from the diet. 2. Eat more resistant starch Resistant starch – found in some potatoes and beans – bypasses the small intestine, gets metabolized by the good bacteria and then behaves as dietary fiber in the large intestine. Foods that are low on the glycemic index tend to be quite helpful for controlling blood sugar. When it comes to your blood sugar levels, always discuss with your medical practitioner. Lets discuss healthy food alternatives to high GI carbohydrates and sugar filled foods that can help to control blood sugar in the body. 1. Garlic can help with the management of blood sugar levels. Garlic has been shown to actually lower blood glucose levels during a fasted state when you haven’t yet eaten. Garlic is also beneficial since it does not contain any carbohydrates which means that it will not increase blood sugar levels when it is consumed like other high GI carbohydrates will. As well, garlic contains a wealth of vitamins and minerals, such as manganese a vitamin B6, and promotes the overall health of our body. 2. Blueberries are a great fruit to eat to control blood sugar. Blueberries won’t raise your blood sugar as much when compared to other fruits. They are rich in concentrations of anthocyanins, which inhibit different digestive enzymes and slow down digestion. They also contain high levels of fibre and can prevent blood sugar spikes after eating starchy meals. 3. Almonds are a nutritional powerhouse as they contain many vitamins, minerals and nutrients. They are also helpful in regulating and reducing increases in blood sugar levels after meals. As well, almonds have been found to increase insulin sensitivity. Unlike other nuts like cashews, almonds also have a very low GI score and contain very little carbohydrates while boasting good levels of fibre. 4. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids are helpful in controlling blood sugar levels in the body. This makes avocados a great food choice to control blood sugar. Avocados are packed with healthy monounsaturated fatty acids. These healthy fats can improve insulin sensitivity, while also reducing inflammation in the body. Avocados are also low on the GI scale and have even been shown to lower the risk of metabolic syndrome, which can increase the risk of diabetes. 5. Leafy green vegetables such as spinach and kale are packed with healthy nutrients. This includes magnesium, vitamin A and fibre. These nutrients are helpful in lowering and controlling blood sugar in the body. As well, these leafy green vegetables may help reduce the risks of developing type 2 diabetes when consumed on a daily basis. They are also low on the GI index so will not raise blood sugar levels very much when consumed. 6. Lastly, fish such as tuna and salmon can be a great food choice to help manage and control blood sugar levels in the body. They are loaded with protein, which does not impact blood sugar levels and increases fullness. As well, they are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, which also helps to nourish your body and reduce cravings while not affecting blood sugar.
