The functionality is founded on ideas I collected while searching the internet for different furnace designs. Project History & More Info: For this project I experimented with 10 different prototypes, to develop a reusable backyard foundry that melts aluminum soda cans easily and safely. I tested different refractory recipes, different containers, different setting for blowing air, and different types of makeshift crucibles. I tried various ratios of portland cement, sand, perlite, plaster of paris, water, and even kitty litter. For containers, I experimented with clay pots, plastic buckets, no container, cinderblocks, and a galvanized steel pail. I ended up favoring the galvanized steel pail, and a mix of 50% plaster of paris, and 50% play sand, by volume, which was inspired by a video by NightHawkInLight "How to Make a Soup Can Forge" http://bit.ly/IBSoupCanForge Depending on where you get, or find, your materials the cost can range anywhere from $5-$25 per unit. With the materials I used, I was able to make 2 units for under $40 ($20 each). Even on the high end, this is probably one of the cheapest, reliable, backyard foundries that can be made. I used mine to melt soda cans, and extract the aluminum for future metal casting projects. All the soda cans came from a local recycling depot. Large Scrapping Furnace for aluminium melting, waste oil fueled

Large capacity easy build Furnace powered by waste oil for seperating aluminium for scrap metal selling and recycling. See my other burner vids and tutorials here: https://www.youtube.com/user/glumpy10/videos Made from a 205L drum and using a waste oil burner featured in my other channel videos, this furnace can take small engines, gearboxes and other large pieces of metal containing scrap aluminium which can be easily melted and seperated. The burner is the waste oil type and provides more than enough power to melt the largest and heaviest pieces. It's output is well inexcess of 300Kw and it used Waste vegetable oil or engine oil or any other combustable liqud. The furnace would be perfect for melting aluminium Soda cans in bulk as well as lawn mower engines and chassis. The large capacity of the drum means multiple pieces of raw scrap can be melted before the remains need to be cleaned out. The furnace is also capeable of melting copper so the aluminium from things like starter motors would be melted off then the waste oil burner turned up if needed to melt and seperate the copper as well. If the drum was insulated with some refractory or kiln wash, the effeciency of the unit would be much higher. The furnace is demonstrated in it's simplest lowest cost form as a proof of concept that would well exceede the needs of most home users.

She wanted to show how we could reuse all the things that normal people view as junk.  So we decided to try our hand at melting aluminum scrap.  The first thing we had to do was figure out what temperature aluminum melts at. Then we had to learn how to make a homemade aluminum smelter this was pretty fun and exciting for us both.  When we told some of our friends and family they were very interested but skeptical at the same time. YES I KNOW I SHOULD HAVE WORN SHOES. Any shoe-related comments will be deleted so don't waste your time. In today's video I'll show you how I built a very crude aluminum-melting furnace. I generate a lot of aluminum soda can waste (as you may have seen in my video on making Alum), and I've always wanted to have the ability to melt them down into ingots. Why? No real reason, I just thought it would be cool! I was actually making another video this weekend, but ran into some problems at the end. So instead I bring you the aluminum forge :) Once I figure out what's going on with my other experiment, I'll certainly be posting that as well. After seeing the concept, I couldn't find any information anywhere on the internet or in libraries about arc furnace experiments, so I set out on my own to achieve these results. Project History & More Info: If you're wondering where you can get fire brick locally, try a quick Google search for “refractory materials” in your city. I called a couple of companies near me and asked if they'd sell to the general public. All of them said yes. If you can't find anything locally, try searching major hardwares stores online. They usually have inventory online that they don't carry in the stores. The insulating fire bricks I got were the 3” x 4.5” x 9” Alumina-Silicate Brick variety. I got a box of 10 for $33, effectively making them around $3.30 each. I went one step further and designed the furnace so that 2 of them could be made from one brick, cutting the cost in half, making each furnace a pro-rated $1.65 each! They're extremely lightweight, and capable of withstanding the temperatures used in steel working, but soft enough you can cut and carve them with kitchen utensils if you need to. In reading and studying history a bit, I learned that some of the earliest forms of light were made using carbon arc lighting. Large amounts of electricity were pumped through carbon rods, making a bright arc and providing light. To scavenge carbon electrodes, I took a lesson from NurdRage (youtube.com/NurdRage) a couple of years ago I saw his video on what could be scavenged from a carbon-zinc lantern battery (http://bit.ly/IBNurdRageBattery). It's useful to know what common everyday materials are made of, and these heavy duty batteries are containers packed with carbon rods, zinc metal, and manganese dioxide. I tucked the information in the back of my mind until now. In this project I tried melting the zinc casings from the lantern batteries, and casting them into a small ingot, formed with a mini muffin tray. Be cautious of the zinc oxide fumes produced. I haven't personally suffered any ill effects from working with it, but some people claim it can give flu like symptoms, or a fever if inhaled in large quantities. Zinc has a relatively low melting point 787.2°F (419.5°C), so the Arc Furnace is able to melt each casing into liquid zinc in around 5-10 seconds. That's amazing! I don't have an exact purpose for the zinc yet, but it's an easy metal to work with, easy to cast, and great to have on hand for a future projects. It's also one of the main metals used for making a simple carbon-zinc battery. The black stuff pulled out of the battery casings is manganese dioxide. It's a useful chemical for experiments with hydrogen peroxide, so it's worth hanging onto. Although I haven't verified it, I believe any stick welder can be used to power the mini arc furnace, and for most hobbyists, that would definitely be the easier and safer way to go. I just don't own a welder, so I used the one I made instead. You can see how to make it here: https://goo.gl/H0FWxE The longest I've run the unit continuously is around 3-4 minutes, and the electrodes get so hot at that point they can seriously burn your hands, or melt your gloves. I wouldn't recommend running it any longer than that.

I modified the template from RBGuns to make the styrofoam mold. Project History & More Info: The gun is solid aluminum, made from melted down soda cans. I spent over 100 hours of time, and 7 styrofoam prototypes to make this video. About a third of the time was spent filing and sanding the gun. Each time I poured a casting for the gun, the trigger guard wouldn’t complete all the way through, so I kept making new styrofoam guns, modifying the designs slightly until it worked. Once I got a fairly clean casting, I put 2 days into filing down rough points, and sanding them smooth. The gun could use a little more work, and it’s not perfect, but this experiment was mainly a proof of concept that nearly anything you can imagine can be made fairly easily with the “lost foam casting” technique. Overall, I really am happy with the gun though! It weighs 556 grams, and is really quite smooth to feel. For future projects, I plan to work more with green sand casting. I believe it will leave a nicer finish overall and won’t require as many prototypes to get it right :) Instead of foam, wood plugs can be used to make the molds, or even real weapons for that matter.

After experimenting independently, I developed the two designs into this hybrid. Project History & More Info: A year after I made my charcoal foundry (http://bit.ly/PopCanMelting), a friend named Chris came by to visit, and to show me a foundry he'd made out of a propane tank, and refractory cement. His was more expensive to construct, but was made to last longer, and he powered it with propane instead of charcoal. He said the burner plans he followed were the common "Ron Reil" design, which for some reason I had never heard of. I bought the plumbing parts from Home Depot with intentions to build the torch, but they just sat on my worktable for months as I worked on developing other projects first. After a considerable amount of time, a young man named Shadrick came to my house and noticed the plumbing parts on my table and asked if I was making a propane burner. To my surprise, he'd made a propane foundry himself and had been using it to forge steel, melt aluminum, and make knives for over a year. His assembly was completely different from the one Chris had, and since I really didn't have much idea of how propane burners worked at all, I was interested in reverse engineering the science behind it. I realized that the purpose of the burner was to mix certain amounts of fuel and air to achieve the hottest temperature possible, and the cleanest burn. I played with different lengths of tubing, and stumbled on the realization that by controlling the air-flow through the intake port, I could adjust the flame completely, and use any length of pipe I wanted. I also noticed that without a nozzle on the end, the burner wouldn't work. I quickly developed some prototypes for an air regulator design I made from the lid of a tuna can, and it worked perfectly! My final design was a hybrid of the two systems, with most of the plumbing parts based around the Ron Reil assembly, and the rest based on the connections I saw on Shad's system.

Making a Metal Melting Furnace (Simple, Effective, Propane)

At the new place I can't just light a stinking coal fire in the backyard like I used to, so I had to find a cleaner and more controlled way of melting aluminium. I thought about building an electric furnace, but that seemed to be too much work and too prone to failure because of breking coils and comes with a number of other problems. So I decided to make a propane furnace and keep it as simple as possible. As an outer shell I used a steel barrel. As a mold for the inner chamber I used the container of an old herbicide sprayer, because I couldn't find a bucket of the right size and didn't want to buy one. The substance of the furnace was made from a mixture of fire cement and perlite dry fill insulation. The perlite will insulate the furnace, hence making it more efficient, and the fire cement will glue the perlite particles together to form a solid mass. This also makes this furnace remarkably lightweight.

DIY Iron Furnace Build

I made a small furnace for casting iron and stainless steel. It uses the same burner as my aluminum furnace but takes about 2 hours to heat up( a .75GPH nozzle is in the mail). If you wanted to save fuel simply coating ceramic blanket in santanite or Itc-100 might be better. I wanted something more robust, the refractory is very heavy and rated to 3000F. I should be able to push it a bit but the crucible won't quite cut it. I'll likely need one that's rated higher and can be capped and flooded with argon. *********** CRUCIBLE - Purchased on EBAY -A10 Clay graphite Fuel- Start on propane, than switch to diesel I'm pretty happy with it and some of my castings have come out nice(video on that later) but they do rust quick unpainted. If you have any suggestions let me know. I got the Cast-O-lite 30 off ebay + some mizzou plus for plinths and the 2600F ceramic blanket I made all the foundry tools with hardware store steel The 10 gallon barrel was free and stays touchable even when the pour is molten! This is really dangerous, the molten iron can go right through just about anything. Start with aluminum before going up to iron. The fumes are bad, the heat will melt flesh, the fuel tank could explode the crucible could rupture, the pour could hit water. You really need to be careful Consider supporting me and my projects on patreon! https://www.patreon.com/Bennbuilds **Note about my shoes: They are made of leather, plus they can be kicked off super quick, plus I tested them by pouring some metal on them and it was not a big deal at all, so I wouldn't even need to. Its a small furnace in an open space that's really easy to run away from in the case of an accident such as a crucible rupture or spill, and no skin is exposed so I'm pretty safe from splatters. Also, all the clothing can be removed really quickly, witch matters most to me. Its surprisingly hard to get metal to pool up and burn through clothing, especially when you can shake around. And if it does just pull the clothing off as you run away. This is not a professional foundry where you can get trapped and there are thousands of pounds of molten metal around you. Danger scales, like everything else. Incandescent light bulbs get hotter than this, yes they burn down houses but you don't wear a fire suit in your kitchen.

The functionality is founded on ideas I collected while searching the internet for foundry designs. WARNING: Charcoal foundries can reach temperatures in excess of 1,000ºC, which is well above the melting point of hobbyists. This project should only be attempted with adequate knowledge and training, proper protective safety gear, and in a fire resistant area with adequate ventilation. The sparks flying from the foundry can ignite fires, and the fumes from burning dross can be toxic. Use caution and common sense. Use of this video content is at your own risk. Project History & More Info: This video is a quick overview of how I made my backyard foundry. The insulating lining probably isn't as resilient or long-lasting as a refractory cement, but it can be made quickly and cheaply with very common materials. In my experience, the sand/plaster lining is durable and lasts long enough to satisfy any backyard hobbiest, so long as you're gentle and respect the foundry. Slight cracking may occur after a few firings, and that's normal and doesn't affect performance significantly. I haven't had to replace a lining yet, but if you wanted to, it would be really easy to knock out the plaster, and mix up a new batch, reusing the steel pail. I made 10 different prototypes and experimented with various ratios of portland cement, sand, perlite, plaster of paris, water, and even kitty litter. I ended up favoring the galvanized steel pail, and a mix of 50% plaster of paris, and 50% play sand, by volume, which was inspired by a video by NightHawkInLight "How to Make a Soup Can Forge" http://bit.ly/IBSoupCanForge The purpose of my backyard foundry is to demonstrate the most basic setup for casting metals. However if you plan to attempt this approach yourself, some important things to consider beforehand are as follows; - Soda cans work really well, however aluminum cans are one of the worst sources for aluminum to cast with, and some soda cans in the UK are actually made of steel. The alloy was meant for extrusion, so is not the best for casting. They also produce more dross (slag) because the thin walls oxidize quickly and the plastic coatings on the cans add impurities. A better source of aluminum for casting would be cast aluminum items from thrift stores, like electric skillets or small engine blocks from lawnmower shops. - The crucible I used was steel, but it’s important to note that steel can be soluble in molten aluminum. It’s possible that when you lift the crucible out of the foundry, the bottom can dissolve out and drop molten aluminum onto you feet and onto the ground. A good refractory crucible can be purchased for about $30 online. - Lastly, casting over concrete poses risks of steam explosions. If molten aluminum falls to the ground, it can superheat the moisture in the concrete and cause it to spall (steam explosion) where the aluminum lands. This can potentially send hot concrete and molten aluminum spraying everywhere. When possible, melt and pour metal over sand to minimize risks. Note: Wearing polyester gloves like the ones I had in the video is risky because the material can melt into your hands if you get splashed by hot aluminum. This can potentially leave burns where the metal lands, ringed by plastic burned into the skin.
