One thing you may find that will serve as an incentive is to use a pedometer throughout your entire day. Checking the pedometer will encourage you to increase your pace or distance. If you notice that you aren’t able to lose weight and are only maintaining it, just increase your daily distance or speed. Cryotherapy for Recovery: What are the Pros and Cons- Thomas DeLauer: Cryotherapy may not be the best way to recover, but it certainly has some long term benefits! Learn more at http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Cryotherapy is the cooling of body parts for therapeutic purposes. Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) is the practice of exposing the body for short periods of 2 to 5 minutes to temperatures lower than -100 degrees Celsius, or -212 degrees Fahrenheit. Participants will wear clothing to protect their heads, hands and feet from extreme cold to reduce any risk of injury from the cold. It was originally started in the hopes of treatment for chronic medical conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, and is now popular for athletes as it is said to heal recovery from workouts and injuries. More and more people are using WBC for their general health and wellbeing. A 2014 study published in the Open Access Journal of Sports Medicine looked at ten studies that researched WBC for empirical evidence of benefits. Most of the studies were done with young (under 35), athletic participants. As our skin is a protective barrier from outside elements and air is a poor thermal conductor, WBC does not offer extensive subcutaneous and core body cooling. Ice packs were found to cause the greatest cooling, while WBC and cold-water therapy baths were found to cool to about the same extend. Some of the studies found evidence that following intense exercise, WBC reduced subjective feelings of muscle recovery from soreness and fatigue with not much benefit to functional recovery. This means that participants reported feeling less soreness in the muscles, however, the markers of muscle damage were the same following exercise when WBC groups were compared to control groups. This is likely the placebo effect, where you expect to feel something so your mind believes that this is happening, even though there is no scientific support for this belief. There were one study that found WBC to be associated with higher strength and lower fatigue following exercise, however the study may suffer from detection bias because as blinding outcome assessors were not used. There is weak evidence that WBC increases antioxidant and parasympathetic reaction, and aids in inflammatory pathways applicable to exercise recovery. One study did find that WBC helped patient recovery from adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder. Those who had this shoulder injury were randomly assigned to one of two groups, either physiotherapy only or physiotherapy and WBC. After four week those in the WBC group had significant improvement when compared to the physiotherapy only group. Another study published in 2016 in the Acta Neurologica Scandinavica looked at multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and found an improvement in fatigue and functional status for both a low fatigue and a high fatigue group. There was no control group in this study, but the findings are promising when it comes to chronic medical conditions. In these studies there were no adverse effects of WBC found, however there was not extensive monitoring. Tips: Studies without bias that show benefits are still limited, but they do exist. As cold-water therapy (a bath of around 8 degrees Celsius for 4 minutes) and ice packs are less expensive, it may benefit individuals to try these treatments as an alternative to WBC to see how they respond to each. That being said, if you have experienced benefits from WBC there are thus far no negative effects found, so it is safe and could be beneficial to continue therapy. References: 1. Upton Sinclair recommends doing quite long fasts - 12 days, but you may want to work your way up to longer fasts. Unless you are relatively keto adapted (or have experience with fasting of course), it's important that you take precautions while doing a fast. Fasting isn't inherently dangerous, *but diving into fasting when your body is in no way geared for it can be.* I recommend doing more research before doing longer fasts. "The Complete Guide to Fasting" (http://amzn.to/2tQjxXa) is a good book to start with. As Tim Ferriss puts it: Please don't do anything stupid and kill yourself. It would make us both quite unhappy. Just in case I should also say that of course you need to balance fasting with eating - You need to survive off of something. I have been doing intermittent fasting the past year (22 hours fasted, 2 hours eating - you can widen it to 16/8, which still provides great benefits) and will fast for a couple days every other month or so. Several other people have recommend a routine like this - Tim Ferriss recommends doing a 3 day fast once per month and a 7 day fast once per year. Also make sure you're getting enough fat, protein, micronutrients and fiber to maintain a healthy weight and healthy body - *excessive* fasting can be very dangerous. Biotin or vitamin B8, also known as vitamin H or B7, plays an essential role in the energy production from nutrients, as well as in the synthesis of fatty acids and amino acids. Decision of the European health authorities In 2012, the European health authorities (EFSA, European Food Safety Authority and the European Commission) have spoken out on certain health claims on foods and supplements containing vitamin B8 (biotin). After a review of evidence, they felt that these products may claim to help: the metabolism normal energy, the normal functioning of the nervous system, the hair maintenance, a normal skin and mucous membranes, the metabolism normal food, normal mental functions, if and only if these products contain at least 7.5 micrograms of Vitamin B8 (biotin) per 100 g, 100 ml or per package if the product contains only one portion. By cons, food and food supplements containing Vitamin B8 (biotin) may NOT qualify: be essential for healthy bones, teeth, hair, nails or skin; help strengthen the resistance of the nails; reduce fatigue and maintain vitality. These effect are now banned claims for foods and dietary supplements containing Vitamin B8 (biotin). Deficiency, uses and properties assumed vitamin B8 Biotin intake deficiency is sometimes seen in people who suffer from alcoholism or kidney failure , and among those who take treatment against epilepsy. Biotin deficiency is reflected, for example, skin problems, hair loss, of conjunctivitis or muscle cramps. It affected me with my hormones. Neurological problems, panic attacks, anxiety, feeling crazy, thyroid out the window and severe hormone problems. Adrenals out the window too, adrenal fatigue. With a lot of research and my own practitioner experience with a MS in Nutrition, BS Environmental Science, and AS in Massage Therapy. I knew there were something going on, one doesn't lose weight and feel crazy for no reason. One of my physicians gave me a mega dose of bioidentical progesterone at 200 mg / day. I gained a pound a week! All progesterone turned into estrogen and weight gain was so bad I gained 30 pounds of fat. Weight gain not due eating. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), also known as Ubiquinone, is an essential nutrient that acts as an antioxidant within the body and is found in most aerobic organisms from bacteria to mammals. There are various types of Coenzyme Q, but the most common type in human mitochondria is CoQ10. The mitochondria - also known as the powerhouse of cells – produces ATP within the body, which in turn provides the body with the energy it needs to function. CoQ10 is involved in the synthesis/manufacture of Adenosine triphosphate (ATP). As most cellular functions are dependent on an adequate supply of Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), CoQ10 is essential for the health of virtually all human tissues and organs. How CoQ10 Works: Mitochondrial ATP synthesis- The conversion of energy from carbohydrates and fats to adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the form of energy used by cells, requires the presence of coenzyme Q in the inner mitochondrial membrane. As part of the mitochondrial electron transport chain, coenzyme Q accepts electrons from reducing equivalents generated during fatty acid and glucose metabolism and then transfers them to electron acceptors. At the same time, coenzyme Q transfers protons outside the inner mitochondrial membrane, creating a proton gradient across that membrane. The energy released when the protons flow back into the mitochondrial interior is used to form ATP. (1) 3 Benefits: 1) Powerful Antioxidant- Coq10 is an effective fat-soluble antioxidant. CoQ10 has been found to inhibit lipid peroxidation, which occurs when cell membranes and low-density lipoproteins are exposed to oxidizing conditions that enter from outside the body. When LDL is oxidized, CoQ10 is one of the first antioxidants consumed to help offset the effects. Within mitochondria, coenzyme Q10 has been found to protect membrane proteins and DNA from the oxidative damage that accompanies lipid peroxidation and neutralize free radicals directly. 2) Regulate Blood Pressure/Hypertension: Two short-term placebo-controlled trials found that coenzyme Q10 supplementation resulted in moderate blood pressure decreases in hypertensive individuals. Second Study/Trial- In 2007 Meta-analysis was performed in 12 clinical trials (362 patients) comprising three randomized controlled trials, one crossover study and eight open label studies. The meta-analysis of 12 clinical trials, including 362 hypertensive patients, found that supplemental coenzyme Q10 reduces systolic blood pressure by 11-17 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure by 8-10 mm Hg. (2) 3) High Cholesterol: People with high cholesterol tend to have lower levels of CoQ10, so CoQ10 has been proposed as a treatment for high cholesterol, but scientific studies are lacking. There is some evidence it may reduce side effects from conventional treatment with cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins, which reduce natural levels of CoQ10 in the body.
