At Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC), our mission is to improve the health of our community by providing exceptional healthcare. We are committed to going above and beyond to provide exceptional patient care and our Bariatric & Metabolic Surgical Services program is designed to do just that.
Led by Peter Kwon, M.D., Medical Director of Bariatric & Metabolic Surgical Services, Catskill Regional offers three minimally-invasive weight-loss procedures: Gastric Bypass, Gastric Banding and Sleeve Gastrectomy. In this video today, Peter Kwon, along with Karen McKoy, Program Manager, and Janice Kadan, a patient of CRMC.
“I’m Peter Kwon and I’m currently the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery Services here at Catskill Regional Medical Center. Bariatric surgery is not just about losing weight but it’s also addressing a host of medical conditions that come with severe obesity.” – Peter Kwon, Medical Director, Bariatric & Metabolic Surgical Services
“This program is designed for people who have struggled with chronic weight issues. It’s not for the patients that want to lose 15-20 pounds. These are patients that have struggled with being heavy for their whole life. They have often undergone multiple programs, they’ve had a certain degree of success but they haven’t been able to maintain it. They generally struggle with cardiac disease, hypertension, diabetes, sometimes joint pain from their excess weight – and it leads them unable to live to lives that they want. They can’t play with their children. They can’t walk stairs. They can’t go hiking. They can’t enjoy their lives the way that they should be able to.” – Karen McKoy, RN, BSN, Program Manager, Bariatric & Metabolic Surgical Services
“I’m Janice and I’m 53 years old and I’m one of the newest patients at Catskill Regional Medical Center – where I was one of the first to have Bariatric Surgery. I decided to go for Bariatric Surgery because I’m in the middle of my life, 53 years old, and I have a few issues with my health like arthritis and pains in the joints and I knew I was because of my weight.” – Janice Kadan, Patient
“We’re very pleased to offer all services that the patients will need as they go through their pre-screening process. They are able to see a dietitian and get their weight loss counseling. They are able to see a social worker or psychiatrist who assists with modification of any eating issues that they might have. Then they can have their surgery right here in the hospital. They can recover right in the hospital. They can see us in the office in the hospital for all their post-operative care.” – Karen McKoy
“So the patients that enter our program, we try to education them and try to help them make those changes in their diet and lifestyle that will help them in the long term.” - Peter Kwon
“I love the team process because they want to help you so much to achieve the goals that I want for myself. Like I said, it’s more like going in to see best friends because they really make you feel special.” – Janice Kadan
“We did an entire hospital assessment of ‘are we able to treat the patients that we see in our community appropriately – based on their health care needs?’ ‘Are things the right height? Are things the right width?’ ‘Are they comfortable to be able to get in and out of different pieces of equipment?’ It helps with the recovery to feel like this chair is made comfortable for me. I can get myself in and out of the chair easily.” - Karen McKoy
“The patients of Sullivan County have not wanted to travel really outside and so they would like to use Catskill Regional, if they could. So therefore, here we are! To try to bring this service, which is very valuable, closer to home for all the residents of Sullivan County. The most rewarding part of my job is to see people successfully losing the weight, keeping it off, but more importantly than just the weight, is if we’ve helped them get rid of all their diabetes medications, or get rid of their sleep apnea machines, or they could walk now when they couldn’t because of pain in their hips, knees. These are the things that make it worthwhile for us and the field of Bariatric Surgery. To continue to do what we do, and to continue to try to help more people.” – Peter Kwon
“It is a team approach and yet it feels personal too. You know, everybody gets to know you and you get to know them, and you really want to shine for them. I would never take back my decision to do this. It was the best decision I’ve made in my life.” Janice Kadan
