She loved herself, in a good way, and she felt like she had her life under control and moving in the right direction, and, she felt skinny - underweight actually - which at her school and with her friends was really important (much more important than it should have been). At her school being skinny and underweight was normal, like you needed to be skinny and underweight to be perfect - perfect equals beautiful, and who doesn't want to be perfectly beautiful, right? Gaunt, thin, boney. So, after her doctor told her that her BMI (Body Mass Index) indicated being underweight, she was like "yeah! I got this!" So, one day, at lunch with her friends, she told them "My doctor says I'm underweight and I'm really happy about that!" BUT, one of her so-called friends said "Uh, really? Are you sure you're underweight?" And then she asked Isabel how much she weighed - NOT COOL! Isabel froze, she didn't want to say how much she weighed, and she could tell that the conversation was going somewhere mean and not nice. She tried to change the subject but her "friends" wouldn't let it go, wouldn't drop it. She finally just told them what the scale told her that morning and her friends were mean and insulting - one of them said "Umm, I'm not sure that's underweight" The rest of them joined in, saying "yeah, that's not skinny," and " that sounds like it's just average." And, in her school, the word "average" was like an insult of the worst kind. There, being underweight means you're beautiful, and being average means you're not, it means your fat, or your ugly. They just body-shamed her as much as they could. From that day on, for months, Isabel always looked in the mirror, any reflection she caught of herself she saw an average person, an overweight person, an imperfect person. She wasn't confident anymore. All she saw were faults, flaws and imperfections. She thought her face was too round, her belly stuck way out, her thighs were huge, her butt was huge, and her arms were fat. One day - even though she was perfectly beautiful - she looked in the mirror and said "I NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT." She started dieting, restricting her eating, and skipped meals. She skipped breakfast, and lunch, and sometimes even dinner. Not only did she start losing weight, but she also lost all of her muscles, and all of her energy and strength. She couldn't even do her push-ups at Tae Kwon Do, and her ribs started to show, and even though it looked like she was sick, to her, finally, she felt like she was starting to look normal. She had convinced herself that having your ribs poke out, and arms like sticks, and bony legs, and sharp features was perfect. And, even though she was told that she was making herself sick, and even though she had to start eating again to have enough energy to make it through each day, still, in the back of her mind those terrible voices kept saying "you're fat," and "you're not pretty." "I was never skinny enough," she sadly thought. Was she getting the skinny disease? Anorexia? After watching some positive YouTube videos and listening to the people who actually loved and cared about her, she started to realize that EVERY BODY IS BEAUTIFUL. Just because some girls have tiny little waists, or skinny little arms, or long slim faces, that didn't mean that she needed to have those. No, Isabel realized that being unique is beautiful, that beauty is the whole package, the person, the heart and soul and not just the body and some idea that other people plant in your head. "Even though I may not look perfect, I am normal." Isabel realized, once and for all, YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE SKINNY TO BE BEAUTIFUL! What's your story? storybooth wants to hear it! It's Storytime. In humans there is a fine balance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Energy intake is in the form of food, and energy expenditure is in the form of the basal metabolic rate and physical activity. The difference between energy intake and energy expenditure is the net energy balance. If intake exceeds expenditure, then a net positive energy balance occurs. Energy expenditure depends on a number of factors. This includes the starting body weight, the basal metabolic rate and physical activity. With regards to physical activity, there are several key variables including the frequency, intensity, duration and type of activity done. Let us now examine energy consumption. One honey glazed donut is shown which has approximately 300 kilocalories. The energy intake from the consumed donut is equal to the energy consumed by moderate walking for 30-60 minutes, at 3.0 miles per hour. If an individual walks for an hour at 3 miles per hour. They will expend approximately 300 kilocalories, the same as what was contained in the consumed donut. If an individual walks daily for one hour at approximately 3 miles per hour. This type of activity would lead to weight loss. This assumes that the individual does not consume any extra calories and has a net negative energy expenditure. If this activity continues for a period of two to four months, body weight is reduced as depicted. The initial weight loss is the result of a negative net energy balance. The negative energy balance is because energy expenditure exceeds energy intake. After the initial weight loss, the individual continues to do the same type of exercise, that is, 1 hour of moderate walking daily. The chart depicts changes in body weight over time. Individuals are surprised and frustrated that his weight is not continuing to decrease despite regular walking. They have reached a plateau. The reason behind the weight loss pleateau is that with decreased body weight, the basal metabolic rate also decreases. When the basal metabolic rate decreases, there is a decrease in total energy expenditure. If the discouraged individual quits his daily walking exercise. The weight is gained again, at a quicker pace. The weight is re-gained as a result of a positive energy balance being created. Energy expenditure is now less since the physical activity has been stopped. By keeping the same intensity and duration of walking without making any changes in the diet (energy intake) the man would enter a weight maintenance phase. This is characterised by gaining a small amount of weight. The weight maintenance is the result of an energy balance being established within the body, where energy intake essentially equals energy expenditure. If there is no change in energy balance, there will not be any further change in weight. What must be done to end the weight loss plateau? Several options exist to maintain a negative net energy balance. These involve either decreasing energy intake or increasing energy expenditure. Options include: restricting calories further or increasing the frequency, or the intensity or the duration of the exercise. In summary then, weight loss plateau's are expected and can only end with continued exercise and a net negative energy balance. Stopping exercise or increasing calories will lead to weight gain. If one continues to exercise to maintain a net negative energy balance weight loss will be promoted.

How Much Should I Weigh? Calculate Your Ideal Body Weight

And as a matter of fact, the answer varies according to your gender, age height, body type, and a bunch of other health factors. You may see a model in the magazines looking all slim and nice, but when it comes to YOUR personal weight, such figure isn’t really the best example to follow. The question is: Is there any formula to calculate my ideal weight? The answer is YES. In this video, we will see 3 common methods to help you work this out. BMI or body mass index is actually the most popular ratio to figure out your ideal body weight and many healthcare experts use it on a regular basis. It’s actually not that hard: You simply divide your weight in pounds in 2X your height in inches and then multiplied by 703. BMI = weight in pounds / (height in inches x height in inches) x 703 Here is an example: Sara weighs 135 pounds and is 5.5 inches tall. Her BMI in this case would be 22,5 which is among the healthy range. Experts and official resources claim that a healthy person has anywhere from 18.5-24.9 BMI--anything lower falls into the skinny category whereas a BMI of 25+ make you overweight. Our BMIs differ depending on our gender, bone mass, and muscle mass and there is no single BMI that is ideal for all people. Another useful metric we could also use, especially women who have naturally broader hips is the Waist to hip ratio. We can calculate this simply by dividing our waist measurement in our narrowest point to our hips measurements at their widest point. WHR = 33/42 = 0.78 So if our waist measures for example 33 inches and our hips 42, our ratio would be 0.78. Like BMI, WHR index also comes with a set of healthy ranges. In women ideally, this ratio should be up to 0.8 for a lower risk of developing heart and circulation problems. In males, this index should ideally fall to below 0.9 as anything higher than that may increase the risk of developing heart problems at a later stage. The third and final way to figure out our ideal weight or mass, is to calculate our Waist to Height Ratio which is by divining our Waist in inches to our Height in inches. Waist to height ratio = Waist in Inches/Height in Inches Waist to height ratio = 32/66 = 0.48 So for example, if Steve is 5.6 inches tall and his waist measures 32 inches his Waist to Height ratio that would be 32/66 inches so 0.48. Refer the table in the video 02:24 to know what your ratio says about your weight There you go--3 different ways to measure your ideal weight or mass. And the best part is, you don’t have to visit your doctor or an expert to calculate these as you can simply do so at home! This may be a result of a hormone, called leptin, which prevents weight loss. Cells release leptin and its function is to balance the energy levels and body weight: initially, it crosses the blood-brain barrier and binds to receptors in the appetite center in the brain, thus signaling the brain to determine the amount of food that the body needs. Secondly, it raises the activity of the sympathetic nervous system and thus stimulating the fat tissue to burn energy. Yet, there are cases in which the body develops resistance to this hormone. In general, this may happen when the leptin in the blood does not reach the proper targets in order to control appetite, or when the receptors that leptin binds to fail to function properly and do not send the signals to cells to respond to leptin. In most cases, this is the case with obese and overweight people. If the levels of this hormone have been high for a longer period of time, the person loses the sensitivity to it, so the brain does not obey the signals of leptin to speed up the metabolism and stop eating. These are the most common symptoms of leptin resistance: Weight gain. Uncontrollable cravings. Stress eating. Late night eating. Increased blood pressure. Trouble falling or staying asleep. Inability to lose weight. Sugar cravings. Increase in triglycerides. Frequent anxiety. Lack of motivation. Urge to snack soon after meals. Fatigue, especially after eating. In order to reverse insulin and leptin resistance, you should immediately stop consuming: High dietary fat. Sugar. Carbohydrates. Fructose Corn Syrup. On the other hand, your diet should be rich in organic and whole foods, and reduce the intake of grain carbs. You can consume as much high-quality healthful fat (saturated and monosaturated), from avocados coconut and coconut oil, nuts, butter, and animal fats. You should also consume animal-based omega-3 fat, like krill oil. Also, avoid processed foods, and consume soluble fiber and protein. Additionally, reduce the triglycerides by reducing the intake of carbs. It is of high importance to exercise regularly, as exercise can significantly restore the balance in the body and reverse leptin resistance. The issues with the levels of leptin in the body may also be a result of sleep deficiency and sleep disorders, so make sure you get a proper rest and sleep. I'm only doing 3 days of the Egg Fast and I will track and of course stay on WW Freestyle and count everything! Today was a great day and I feel terrific and have 4 points to roll over. Today was a "test" day for me because I am testing my gallbladder out. If I have an attack it will be after doing this because it's very high in fat.
