The first thing is to make sure you're eating three meals a day. Skipping meals can actually cause you to gain weight, because your body goes into starvation mode and your metabolism actually slows down, so make sure you eat three meals a day, especially breakfast. Secondly, an important thing to take note of is how fast you're eating. You actually will eat more the faster you eat, because your brain doesn't have time to catch up with your stomach to know that it's full, so pause in between bites, put your fork down. Take time to enjoy your food. Try to take 30 minutes per meal and that should help with weight control. Another thing to look at when you're trying to lose weight are liquid calories. Make sure that you're not drinking a lot of high sugar juices, sodas, or even alcohol. Those are the diet components. Other behaviors to help with losing weight have to do with increasing your exercise. Really ideally, working out or getting your heart rate up for 30 minutes four to five times per week is ideal. But other things you can do just throughout your day would be things like taking the stairs, park further away from your destination, get up from your desk, go for a walk, and maybe even purchase a pedometer. Because we know that people that wear pedometers actually walk about 2,000 steps more per day and that equals 150 calories. These are just some tips on how you can modify your behavior to help you to lose weight.

She is also a faculty mentor in the Health Psychology Postdoctoral Program, the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, and the Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholars Program on population health. She is a co-founder and now director of the UCSF Center for Obesity Assessment, Study, and Treatment (COAST), Assistant Director of the Center for Health and Community, and Director of the Aging, Emotions, and Metabolism Laboratory. She received a BA in psychology from Stanford University, and a PhD in clinical psychology from Yale University, with a focus on health psychology. Through her research on stress and training in the Yale Center for Eating and Weight disorders, she became interested in the intricate relationships between chronic psychological stress, eating behavior, and energy balance. She completed a clinical internship focusing on Behavioral Medicine at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. With interdisciplinary colleagues, she is involved in clinical trial studies testing effects of stress reduction and mindfulness training on outcomes such as weight loss, rate of cellular aging, and birth outcomes. Dr Rebecca Beeken is a Senior Research Psychologist in the Health Behaviour Research Centre, at University College London. She is primarily interested in the development and evaluation of lifestyle interventions, with a focus on behaviour change interventions for obesity. She currently works on a number of randomised controlled trials, including a series of studies on the benefits of lifestyle change for cancer survivors and people with learning disabilities, and she recently completed a trial of a brief habit-based weight management intervention within primary care. Other research interests include the psychological and biological consequences of weight loss, particularly the impact of weight change on cancer risk. Rebecca is also a committee member of the charity Weight Concern, which aims to guide the development of more effective programs of prevention and treatment for overweight and obesity.
