What Are Vitamin D Deficiency Symptoms?

In certain studies, Americans has been found to be the #1 population in vitamin D deficiency. Some of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a weakened immune system, candida or bacterial overgrowth, emotional ups and downs, hormone imbalance, trouble putting on muscle or losing weight, weakened bones or teeth, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Vitamin D supports having a healthy immune response, digestive health, hormone balance, and more. The biggest causes of vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough sunlight, certain chemicals from plastic bottles (bpa), and toxicity. Try to get outside everyday for about 20-30 minutes of natural sunlight. Certain foods that are sources of vitamin D are wild caught fish, raw fermented milk, mushrooms, and eggs. However, there are small amounts in the food you eat. For a good supplement, I would recommend a high quality vitamin D supplement. You don’t want to take vitamin D2, but you do want to take vitamin D3. For supplementation, take about 2000-5000 IUs a day. However, if you have a severe deficiency, then for 1-2 months, you may take 5000 IUs twice daily. Lastly, you want to take your vitamin D3 with some form of fat like coconut oil or avocado to help absorption in your body. Timing is everything when it comes to taking your vitamins and supplements, so we've put together a guide to help you maximize the powerful health benefits that come from taking them at the right time. Morning: -Probiotics - Probiotics are best taken in the morning on an empty stomach. • When the stomach is empty, digestive activity is quiet and stomach acid and pH balance are relatively low, increasing the chances for the helpful microorganisms to thrive. -Iron - Iron is best absorbed in the morning on an empty stomach. • Caffeine, dairy and calcium can negatively affect absorption, so it's best to avoid these for several hours after taking iron. -Multivitamins - Take multivitamins with your first meal. In the morning! • As multivitamins contain both water and fat soluble vitamins, be sure to include some healthy fats with your meal for optimal absorption. -B-Complex vitamins - Taking B vitamins with breakfast helps to boost your metabolism and convert your food into energy, which can be used throughout the day. -Vitamin C- Vitamin C is best taken in the morning to support the immune system and boost energy levels. • Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin that lasts only a few hours in the blood stream, so if your formula recommends more than 1 tablet per day, take it in divided doses with meals to get the full benefit. Noon: -CoQ10 - CoQ10 is best taken at lunch time with a meal that contains dietary fats. • Avoid taking CoQ10 late in the day so it doesn't disturb your sleep. -Vitamin D - Vitamin D is best taken with a meal that contains dietary fats. • It's possible that Vitamin D can negatively affect sleep, so lunch time is a good time to get your Vitamin D. -Iodine - Iodine is not stored in the body, so regular intake is needed. kelp tablets taken with lunch may boost midday energy levels. -Vitamin K - Vitamin K is best absorbed along with dietary fats and ideally should be taken during the middle of the day. • Avoid taking vitamin K if you are taking Coumadin or any anticoagulant prescription drug, as Vitamin K can interfere with the effects of the medication. Night: - Fish oil - Important to support many aspects of health, fish oil is best taken with a main meal like dinner to aid absorption. -Calcium - Calcium aids nerve transmission and muscle function. To get the full benefit, take calcium in the evening along with magnesium. -Magnesium - Magnesium has a calming effect on the muscles and nervous system and may aid restful sleep. • Magnesium works synergistically with calcium, so take these together either as individual supplements or in a combined formula. In addition: -Digestive Enzymes - Digestive enzymes can be taken with any meal or within 30 minutes of your meal. Most people don’t know, but exercise actually DECREASES your testosterone levels. This is especially true for “endurance” exercises such as running, jogging, biking, etc. Even though lifting weights can actually INCREASE your testosterone levels, for many people this is temporary. Afterwards, there is a big drop in testosterone. So, why does this happen? Well, there are lots of reasons. Lower blood sugar due to glucose depletion in your muscles, increases your cortisol levels and can cause a decrease in testosterone. Stress on your nervous system (CNS) due to an exhaustive or overly strenuous workout, increases your cortisol and will cause a decrease in your testosterone. Not eating well, being depleted of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, causes stress on your body and again, raises your cortisol and decreases your testosterone. As you see - the common problem is STRESS and the increase in your cortisol hormone. There are 3 ways to fix this problem and reduce this from happening: Make sure you have enough food in your body, before AND after exercise. This means have a good, light meal about an hour or two before exercise. And make sure to eat carbs and protein soon after your workout, to replenish your empty glucose and protein levels. Keep your workouts short. No more than 30-45 minutes. No more than 3-4x weekly. Don’t kill yourself. You should leave the gym feeling GOOD and refreshed. Not as if you just got done wrestling Kingkong and you’re dead tired. Take vitamins and herbs after your workout, that are clinically proven to reduce cortisol and increase your testosterone. And one of the simplest ways to do this is to take Vitamin C. Recent research shows that taking about 500 mgs of Vitamin C, before AND after your workout,1 can Decrease your stress hormone, cortisol. Opening Title: Is a Vitamin D deficiency linked to prostate cancer? My background is in drug discovery and drug development, and so when I think of a supplement I think of it in the exact same terms I do a prescription drug. I look for the same of sound mechanism of action and data.So the strongest information is available for Vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency is common in men of this age group…in our clinic we found half of the new patients coming in were vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increase in prostate disease, BPH… enlargement of the prostate with age as well as the risk of cancer. Pretty much tracks with the hours of sunlight. Hours of the country with lower sunlight have a much higher risk of prostate cancer than those with high sunlight. And that leads directly to Vitamin D deficiency. And so we make it a standard practice to measure Vitamin D blood levels in our patients, and then give a dose of vitamin D necessary to bring their vitamin D up. So for the first couple months we measure vitamin D every month and adjust the dose till we find out that patient’s specific dose. For most men it’s somewhere between 5-7000 units a day are necessary. And the body actually has a built in mechanism to dispose of excess Vitamin D when you do that. The liver turns on a destruction pathway. So Vitamin D has a huge safety margin. The only time people get into trouble with Vitamin D is if they’re taking very high doses of calcium at the same time, which is a completely artificial circumstance, better to take a natural approach which is a Vitamin D level in this range. Series: "Vitamin D for Public Health - Integrating Sunshine, Supplements and Measurement for Optimal Health 2014" [Health and Medicine] [Professional Medical Education] [Show ID: 29078] The new prescription for colon cancer prevention may soon include an afternoon in the sun followed by a tall glass of milk. Several new studies in the past year have shown that by maintaining adequate serum Vitamin D levels, individuals may successfully prevent colon cancer as well as several other internal cancers. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that is found in some foods and can also be made by your body during exposure to ultraviolet UV light from the sun. Since there are only a few commonly consumed foods that are good sources of vitamin D (see accompanying table), sunlight is perhaps the most important source of Vitamin D. UV rays from the sun initiate vitamin D synthesis in the skin. The extent of sunlight derived Vitamin D is impacted directly by factors that affect UV ray exposure including, season, geography, time of day, cloud cover, and sunscreen. Over two decades ago, researchers first recognized the importance of vitamin D from sunlight in preventing colorectal cancer. They observed significantly higher mortality rates from colorectal cancer in the northern and northeastern United States, compared to the southwest, Hawaii and Florida, which correlated directly with an individual’s vitamin D status. They showed that people who had higher levels of serum vitamin D, had lower rates of colon cancer. Since then several observational and laboratory studies have investigated the association of serum vitamin D levels and colorectal cancer risk. Common Sources of Vitamin D Salmon Fresh, wild (3.5 oz) 600-1000 IU Fresh, farmed (3.5 oz) 100-250 IU Shiitake Mushroms Fresh (3.5 oz) 100 IU Sun-dried (3.5 oz) 1600 IU Sardines, canned (3.5 oz) 300-600 IU Mackeral, canned (3.5 oz) 250 IU Cod Liver Oil (1tsp) 400-900 IU Tuna, Canned (3.6 oz) 230 IU Egg yolk 20 IU Fortified Milk (8 oz) 100 IU Fortified Cheese (3.5 oz) 100 IU Sunlight Exposure (5-10 minutes) 3000 IU A new study using a sophisticated analytical technique known as a meta-analysis*, examined the data from five previous observational studies, each of which examined vitamin D and colorectal cancer risk with a follow-up of 25 years. The results of the meta-analysis revealed that by raising the serum level of vitamin D to 34 ng/ml, the incidence rates of colorectal cancer could be reduced by half. Even higher levels of serum Vitamin D further reduced colorectal cancer risk, as head researcher Edward Gorham, Ph.D. reported, “We project a two-thirds reduction in incidence with serum levels of 46 ng/ml, which corresponds to a daily intake of 2,000 IU of vitamin D3. This would be best achieved with a combination of diet, supplements and 10 to 15 minutes per day in the sun.” Researchers in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute also reported on the protective effect of vitamin D in preventing colorectal cancer mortality. After following the vitamin D status of 16,818 participants for 12 years, researchers determined that vitamin D exhibited a strong protective effect against colorectal cancer, with levels of 32 ng/ml or higher having a 72% risk reduction on colorectal cancer mortality. In further support of Vitamin D, a recently completed epidemiological study of over 190,000 individuals, showed that both calcium and vitamin D from (from food and supplements) were protective against colorectal cancer. Though researchers reported mixed results for men and women, “Total vitamin D intake was inversely associated with colorectal cancer risk in men but not in women.” In yet another study from 2007, researchers in Japan suggest that a low level of plasma vitamin D may decrease the risk of rectal cancer, yet have little effect on colon cancer. The researchers suggest that the reason for the distinction in its protective effect in the rectum but not the colon may derive from differences in the vitamin D receptor in these tissues. Vitamin D has certainly proven effective in colorectal cancer prevention, though the question of how much vitamin D to take is still in dispute. In 1997 the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine recommended that healthy individuals who are not exposed to sunlight should adequately consume vitamin D from dietary sources in the following amounts:

But there is an interesting associated factor, i.e. the build up of calcium in the arteries of the brain. Also, if the arteries get packed with calcium packing, the arteries get hard and it might be one of the causes for high blood pressure. Stroke is a situation of blocking of vascular blood flow to the brain. Dosages to try: Healthy normal person: Vitamin D3 (10,000 IUs) + Vitamin K2 (MK-7) (100mcg) per day Unhealthy person: Vitamin D3 (30,000 IUs) + Vitamin K2 (MK-7) (300mcg) per day Vitamin D and K2 work together and help to mobilize calcium. You may want to consume both vitamins, in the morning with butter or coconut oil for better absorption (due to being fat soluble). Vitamin D3 is about absorption of calcium and vitamin K2 is about directing where calcium goes - both working together to keep your arteries and soft tissues clean and your bones strong. Unless you have osteoporosis, I would not recommend taking extra calcium. Instead consume some cheese on a daily basis. Most of the calcium in the body is recycled so adding more, is not needed. Never consume calcium carbonate (limestone) as your calcium. If you take calcium and vitamin D without K2, you may be in danger of excess calcium build up - calcification of your vessels. Yet K2 is a powerful inhibitor of calcification of soft tissues.
