Vitamin B12 Deficiency Signs, Symptoms, And Risk Factors The symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency are diverse, including both physical and mental symptoms. The physical symptoms include palpitations, incurable fatigue, loss of balance, numbness, tingling, pale skin, and sore and red tongue. The mental symptoms include memory loss, depression, or obsessive compulsive disorder. Vitamin B12 Is Essential For Your Nerves And Genes Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is one of the 8 essential B vitamins. As it is water soluble, your body cannot store it; so, it needs to be constantly sourced through food. All B vitamins help produce energy in the body by converting carbohydrates from the food into fuel (glucose) and use fat and protein optimally Signs And Symptoms Of Vitamin B12 Deficiency As an adult, you need only 2.4 mcg vitamin B12 daily through your diet. For infants below 1 year, the daily requirement ranges from 0.4 to 0.5 mcg. Pregnant and lactating mothers require 2.6 and 2.8 mcg, respectively. The only source of vitamin B12 are foods, mostly from animal sources, and supplements. While vegetarians can get it from dairy products, they still risk not getting enough. However, vegans have a high risk of vitamin B12 deficiency if they do not eat B12-fortified foods and supplements. Deficiency occurs either when you don’t get enough of it through your diet or when your body cannot absorb it effectively. Poor absorption is caused by aging, low stomach acid, chronic digestive disorders like Crohn’s disease or celiac disease, stomach surgeries, and pernicious anemia. 1. Memory Loss, Depression, OCD, And Psychosis The first signs of vitamin B12 deficiency, which could take years to develop, have either to do with your nerves and mental health. The list includes depression, memory loss, psychosis, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and dementia. The reason behind this is that vitamin B12 helps build the protective myelin sheath around nerve cells. 2. Anemia, Fatigue, Shortness Of Breath There are certain blood-related signs that the deficiency could manifest in. 8 Signs You’re Eating Too Much Sugar. 1. Constant hunger. High blood sugar prevents glucose from entering cells. However, there is a reason you are asked to pee in a cup for most doctor's visit. The color, consistency and smell of your urine are tell tale signs of what is happening in your body. Your urine color can tell if you had a simple diet change or a serious cancer diagnosis. Let's look at the color of your urine and what it says about your health! Symptoms of Urine Color change. Normal urine color usually falls within the yellow spectrum, ranging from a pale yellow to a dark amber. The amount of water you consume or how well you are hydrated, influences the color of your normal urine. If you consume a lot of water or is usually well hydrated your normal urine color is usually a pale yellow. On the other hand, if you are dehydrated or lack water, your urine color could be more of a dark amber. Any other color variation outside of this yellow spectrum is considered abnormal and you should consult your physician. What causes Urine Color to change? • Diet, Vitamins and Minerals. Natural foods, such as berries and beets, as well as processed foods, contain food dye. This can combine with the urine pigment to change urine color. Supplements and multivitamins containing B vitamins, vitamin C and beta-carotene can also affect the color of your urine. • Medications. Prescripton and over-the-counter medications can affect the color of your urine. These include laxatives, antibiotics and chemotherapy drugs. • Health conditions. The color of your urine could be a sign of problems with your bladder, kidneys or liver. • Exercise. If you don't consume water or fluids after a workout, you could become dehydrated, which could result in a darker colored urine. • Pregnancy. Urine color could be influenced during the early stages of pregnancy. Urine Color and what it means. • Clear or Transparent Urine. Your consumption of water may be excessive. You may need to cut back. • Fizzy or Foamy Urine. This is normal, if it occurs occasionally. However, if persistent, it could be a sign of excess protein or kidney problem. You should consult your doctor. • Pale Straw Yellow Urine. This indicates that you are normal, healthy and well hydrated. • Transparent Yellow Urine. You are Normal. • Dark Yellow Urine. This indicates that you are dehydrated. You must consume liquid immediately. It could also be a result of taking b- vitamins or beta-carotenes. • Orange Urine. This could be a sign of dehydration. It could also be caused from a gallstone, liver or bile duct condition, or possibly food dye. Consult your doctor. • Brown Urine. This could be a sign of severe dehydration or liver disease. Consume some water immediately. If it persists, consult your doctor. • Pink/Red Urine. This could be caused from a recent consumption of beets, blueberries or rhubarb.
