10 Common Warning Signs of a Mental Health Condition in Teens and Young Adults

01:49
Telling the difference between what expected behaviors are and what might be the signs of a mental illness isn't always easy. There's no easy test that can let someone know if there is mental illness or if actions and thoughts might be typical behaviors of a person or the result of a physical illness. Each illness has its own set of symptoms but some common signs of a mental health condition can include the following.

How to Identify Symptoms of Mental Illness in a Friend

02:50
Watch more Mental Health videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/317000-How-to-Identify-Symptoms-of-Mental-Illness-in-a-Friend Mental illness doesn't mean that your friend is "crazy," but it does mean that they need treatment. Here's how to spot the warning signs. Warning Even if you see symptoms in your friend, only a medical professional can actually diagnose them. Step 1: Consider their mood Observe if your friend experiences extreme mood swings without anything provoking them, or if they have persistent feelings of sadness over time. These can be signs of mood disorders, with bipolar disorder and depression being the most common. Tip Keep in mind that some symptoms can be temporary reactions to stress or grief – not signs of mental illness. Step 2: Consider their temperament Observe their levels of anxiety. If they have a persistent inability to relax or sleep, lack concentration, are easily agitated, and have muscle tensions or a rapid heartbeat over a period of at least six months, those may be signs of an anxiety disorder. Step 3: Observe their awareness Ask yourself if your friend hears or sees things that are not real, or experiences delusions. Psychotic disorders involve a distorted way of thinking and awareness. Step 4: Consider their social behavior Ask yourself if your friend has exhibited any erratic, unusual, or inappropriate behavior in work, school, or social relationships, seems disinhibited in front of others, or is anxious and afraid around others. These can be symptoms of a number of personality disorders. Step 5: Consider compulsions Ask yourself if your friend has been performing compulsive, ritualistic behavior or unnecessarily repetitive actions, like constant hand-washing or checking things repeatedly. Step 6: Observe signs of self-injury Check to see if your friend exhibits evidence of self-harm or self-inflicted wounds, like cutting or scratching. Also, notice if your friend has become extremely thin or has expressed excessive negative attitudes and emotions about weight or food. Eating disorders, like anorexia nervosa and bulimia are classified as mental illnesses. Step 7: Consider substance abuse Ask yourself if your friend has any indications of drug or alcohol abuse. Step 8: Talk to them If your friend has exhibited any of these symptoms continually or several months, it may indicate they have a mental illness. Talk them in a supportive way and suggest they see a qualified physician or counselor for advice or help. Did You Know? A Stanford University study found that graduate students in creative disciplines shared more personality traits with a set of bipolar patients than with a group of their healthy – but non-creative – peers.

10 Symptoms You Might Have Mental Insanity

10:08
What are the symptoms of a mental illness? If a friend or loved one doesn’t seem themselves, how do you spot the difference between a bad mood and something more serious? Maybe you’ve been depressed—crying at the drop of a hat, not enjoying things that used to make you happy. Or you feel overwhelming anxiety, the kind that makes you think your heart might beat right out of chest. Or perhaps it’s a little scarier than that, and you’ve started seeing things that aren’t there. The bad news: something’s up. The good news: you’re not going insane. Insanity is actually just a legal term to describe abnormal mental patterns and behaviors (as in not-guilty by reasons of insanity). Your symptoms could indicate any number of diagnoses. Most of them decrease with treatment, including psychiatric attention and medication. Keywords: Warning Signs of Insanity, warning sings of mental Ilness, mental ilness, insanity, paranoia, depression, bipolar disorder, changing mood, Unusual behavior, Apathy, Nervousness, nervous, mental health, insane, schizophrenia, anxiety, Hallucination ********************************** Join the Club! Can Mental illness PHYSICALLY affect you?

04:42
Hey Kati. So I have a question, can mental illness/ illnesses physically effect you. I don't mean behavior I mean physical illness and pain. More specifically I've been diagnosed with depression and anxiety disorder and I wake up almost every morning feeling physically ill (sick heavy head) but more than that it's really hard to compare it to any other feeling (Im pretty sure its not an anxious stomach) but it's only when I wake up even when I've had a really good nights sleep. I stay off school because of it but it's hard to explain it to my dad so I just refuse to go. Originally developed as part of a Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama patch program called Change of Mind coordinated by ADMH's Office of Public Information & Community Relations, this presentation is relevant for people of all ages who want to learn more about mental illness. Understanding the Biology of Mental Illness seeks to educate, as well as heighten awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with mental illnesses. Top 10 Scary and Terrifying Mental Disorder

04:43
The Top 10 Terrifying Mental Disorders #10 - Wendigo Psychosis A wendigo is a creature that appears in the native American Algonquian peoples Legends, Pocahontas would have heard the stories as a child for sure. Wendigo psychosis is the legend come to life, sufferers feel the need to eat human flesh, just as the Wendigo did in the Algonquian Legends. #9 - Alice in wonderland Syndrome. What could be more interesting? Well sure you get the distorted visual reality of things appearing bigger or smaller, sounds mirroring that effect. Might be fun for a few minutes, but imagine that all the time, plus the brain splitting Migraine that never goes away. #8 - Alien Hand syndrome. When they say Idle hands are the devils playthings, they weren't kidding. Imagine lying in bed sleeping peacefully and a strong grip suddenly envelopes your throat. It's your hand, with a mind of its own. Sufferers are in a constant battle for control of the actions of their own limb. luckily actual cases are so rare as to barely be a statistic. Unluckily there is no cure, the best option is to keep that hand as busy as possible. #7 - Kluver-Bucy Syndrome In a word, inappropriate. Sufferers feel like doing inappropriate things with inappropriate objects, I mean REALLY inappropriate things. they also sometimes want to eat inappropriate items, and probably the most disturbing, is the Hyperorality that comes with Kluver-Bucy Syndrome. That is the compulsion to explore with your mouth, so the next time someone is gnawing on your shoulder in the subway, try not to judge. #6 - Cotards Syndrome The real life walking Dead, Or at least that is what they think. Sufferers of Cotard's syndrome truly believe they are no longer living but somehow continue to move and speak, don't worry they don't crave the flesh of the Living, problem is they don't eat at all. Why should they right? Making it worse, we really have not been studying this condition for long. It only just showed up in 1880, but not even formally recognized till 2007. #5 - Fregoli Delusion People that suffer from this delusion, have the notion that many people they meet and know are actually all just the same person, They just change disguises to fool the victim for some reason. It also affects a sufferers memory, replacing places and events. This delusion is actually named after a famed Actor Leopoldo Fregoli, Who had the ability to change into different costumes very quickly. #4 - CapGras Delusion Stephen King Once said about terror "Its when you come home and notice everything you own had been taken away and replaced by an exact substitute" CapGras Delusion is something like that, only instead of it being your things, its your friends family and loved ones. No matter how hard you try to convince them, sufferers are convinced someone they know or loved has been replaced with an identical copy. Its kind of the opposite of number 5 #3 - Stockholm Syndrome Easily the most infamous of all the disorders on our list. Stockholm Syndrome causes the victims of Hostage situations to sympathize if not out right join their captors cause. Patty Hearst being the most famous case. when she was kidnapped by the SLA( Sybmionese Liberation Army, and joined their cause, even getting convicted of helping them rob a bank. #2 - Diogenes Syndrome. That crazy old cat lady, hoarders, introverts that never leave there home by the light of day in fear of meeting others outside. Its a vicious cycle Suffers feel alone and isolated so they fill the void with whatever they can find, they Hoard or get many pets. The Elderly are most susceptible to this. #1 - Apotemnophilia Or body integrity Identity disorder. Well, to put it bluntly, people that display this disorder have an extremely strong Desire to amputate one or all of their limbs. They are completely Ok with it and in fact must be watched closely once diagnosed for fear they may attempt to fulfill their desire. While not technically Suicidal as the victims do not necessarily want to die, death is a strong possibility. Dual-Diagnosis: Mental Illness and Addiction

03:16
http://www.steponerehab.com/dual-diagnosis -Drug addiction is a disease centered in the mind. Scientists and doctors know that prolonged abstinence from certain drugs allows some of the drug-induced brain changes to reverse themselves. Rehab Centers focus on therapies and medications that treat addiction. Once the patient’s in recovery from their addiction the hope is that they will go on to live a fulfilling and productive life. For many addicts, though, treating substance abuse alone is not enough. Many addicts also have a co-occuring mental disorder in addition to drug problem. Substance Abuse often covers up these disorders leaving them undiagnosed and untreated. This creates a critical flaw in many recovery models for addiction. Having an underlying disorder such as depression, PTSD, or bi-polar disorder can make it difficult for patients to succeed in recovery. Drug addicts can and do recover, but they must always be aware of their problem and work to never fall into addiction again, which is a lifelong process. This is where Dual Diagnosis comes into play. A Dual Diagnosis is a term used for those who have a co-occuring addiction and a mental health issue. In a dual diagnosis not only are both issues treated, they are given treatments which fit a larger picture. While patients are given life changing tools in any rehab, those that specialize in dual diagnosis can provide substantial benefits to patients.

11 Most Severe Psychological Disorders

06:26
Mental illness is a serious condition many people suffer with and some are pretty severe from dangerous PTSD to extreme hoarding. Subscribe to American Eye http://goo.gl/GBphkv 7. Alice in Wonderland Syndrome This syndrome is characterized by the perception things shrinking sort of like in the book where Alice grows from drinking and eating. People who suffer neurological disorder feel like they are giants and looking down upon the earth as though people were just ants. The objects seem to be close but extremely small. One reported case stated that a man saw a car and thought it was the same size as a house cat. There is no true trouble with any optic nerves but the messages that are received from the optic nerves are distorted when they reach the brain. Another common side effect of this disorder is extreme migraines, affecting other senses. Although children are mostly diagnosed with this, people who took too many psychoactive drugs like LSD might as well. 6. Autophagia Autophagia is classified as an impulse control disorder technically but trying to eat yourself is bizarre enough to make our list! People who suffer from this seem to not have to the control over it and are often found eating their fingers lips, tongue and other places their mouth can reach. The person with autophagia is obsessed with causing themselves the most pain possible and will basically cannibalize on the themselves. The exact cause is unknown. Some believe it can be caused from malnutrition or from severe psychological distress like isolation. In a documented case, a 66 year old man started off only biting his nails when he was severely distressed, then it turned into biting his fingers resulting in a complete loss of all his fingers! Yikes! 5. Folie a Deux French speakers out there know this means, craziness shared by two. A couple of people get together and share delusional belief system. If someone you’re with often is crazy enough, their craziness can rub off on you, making you both psycho! The “foile impose” is the person who shares his or her delusional beliefs and imposes on it on others. The “folie simultanee” can accurately describe the hallucination with shocking similarities to the folie impose and they are usually the ones who need more psychiatric help. This can happen if you are with a person for an extended period of time and can especially happen among twins 4. Paranoid Personality Disorder This disorder is characterised by long persistent suspiciousness and paranoia that won’t go away. This leads to extreme distrust of others to the point where it can get extreme. This person will often bear lifelong grudges against family members or best friends for simple reasons. They are often suspicious without reasonable evidence of any wrongdoing. Imagine not being able to tell your friends any details about your day without worrying that they might hold information against you. Anything that is said to these people is often skewed in a way for them to mistrust and looks for hidden meanings to remarks. Unfortunately, this disorder can last for years and even a lifetime. It’s believed to be genetic from people who have had schizophrenia in their bloodline.Bad early childhood experience can often be a factor. 3. Post-Traumatic Stress disorder Also known as PTSD, is common among psychological disorders and can be triggered by a serious event that took place during someone’s life. Soldiers who have fought in the Iraq War have come home slightly different after fighting in a battle. PTSD wasn’t first noticed until shell-shocked soldiers returned from the Vietnam war and now professionals are trying to better understand the symptoms and how to respond to cases. Symptoms of PTSD include recurring flashbacks, nightmares, difficulty sleeping and become angered easily. Coming across something that reminds them of the traumatic event could cause flashbacks and angered emotions. Suffers often try to find a way to cope with the feelings by drugs, alcohol and self inflicted injuries. For some, the only way to get rid of horrid memories is by suicide which is the unfortunate result of roughly 22 American veterans each day. 1.Foreign Accent Syndrome Imagine you were born in the United Kingdom, have spoken English perfectly all your life but suddenly you have a brain injury. You wake in the hospital and you only seem to talk with a Chinese accent! Well this is a true case and it can really happen if you suffer from a stroke of have a traumatic brain injury. This is a rare diagnosis and such a rapid change of speech is not at all common. The first condition was described by a the French neurologist Pierre Marie in 1919 by a Norwegian woman who was hit in the head with shrapnel. After she had recovered from the injury, she was left with a strong German accent and her fellow norwegian friends shunned her because of it!

Struggling with Severe Mental Illness: The Story of Maisie

09:54
Sally Burke is a mother from Hull. But to see her daughter – 13-year-old Maisie – she is forced to make a 118-mile roundtrip to Sheffield, where Maisie is currently sectioned under the Mental Health Act and receiving treatment for paranoid schizophrenia. A national shortage of hospital beds means people in crisis are being shunted all over the UK for hospital care. This, tragically, includes children. If troubled young people having to wait for two years for mental health treatment wasn't bad enough, that they can often only be admitted to psychiatric wards that are miles away from their homes and families is even more terrifying. The figures surrounding the mental health of young Brits are alarming. The number of children being admitted to hospital for self-harm is at a five-year high. Admissions of girls aged 10-14 have increased by 93 percent in the last four years, to 5,953, while there's been a rise of 45 percent in boys. Within this same timeframe, NHS spending on children's mental health services in England has fallen by approximately £50 million. These have left local services in a desperate position, and the human consequence of this is felt by people like Sally and Maisie. We join the former as she makes the trek to Sheffield, its emotional toll only increased by the knowledge that just a mile away from her home is a unit that could have housed Maisie had its overnight care facility not been shut two years ago. Maisie is a short film about what happens to a family when a child is hit by severe mental health problems and a government breaks its promises. Schizophrenia - Mental Disorder मन का कैंसर Motivational Video - by Dr. Deepak Kelkar

07:07
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by abnormal social behaviour and failure to understand what is real. Common symptoms include false beliefs, unclear or confused thinking, hearing voices that others do not hear, reduced social engagement and emotional expression, and a lack of motivation. People with schizophrenia often have additional mental health problems such as anxiety disorders, major depressive illness, or substance-use disorders. Symptoms typically come on gradually, begin in young adulthood, and last a long time. The causes of schizophrenia include environmental and genetic factors. Possible environmental factors include being raised in a city, cannabis use during adolescence, certain infections, parental age, and poor nutrition during pregnancy. Genetic factors include a variety of common and rare genetic variants. Diagnosis is based on observed behaviour, the person's reported experiences, and reports of others familiar with the person. During diagnosis a person's culture must also be taken into account. As of 2013 there is no objective test. Schizophrenia does not imply a "split personality" or "multiple personality disorder" – conditions with which it is often confused in public perception. The mainstay of treatment is antipsychotic medication, along with counselling, job training, and social rehabilitation. It is unclear whether typical or atypical antipsychotics are better. In those who do not improve with other antipsychotics clozapine may be tried. In more serious situations – where there is risk to self or others – involuntary hospitalization may be necessary, although hospital stays are now shorter and less frequent than they once were. About 0.3–0.7% of people are affected by schizophrenia during their lifetimes. In 2013 there were an estimated 23.6 million cases globally. Males are more often affected than females. About 20% of people do well, and a few recover completely. Social problems, such as long-term unemployment, poverty, and homelessness are common. The average life expectancy of people with the disorder is ten to twenty-five years less than for the general population. This is the result of increased physical health problems and a higher suicide rate (about 5%). In 2015 an estimated 17,000 people worldwide died from behaviour related to, or caused by, schizophrenia. • Money & Success Multiplier. • Dr. Deepak Kelkar. • Psychiatrist, Hypnotherapist, Psychotherapist, • De-addiction Specialist. • Anxiety and Depression ( counseling ) • Life Coach, Business Coach • 9822570101 Kelkar Hospital is a 100 bedded Psychiatric Hospital in Maharashtra located at Akola. Severe Schizoaffective (Schizophrenia x Bipolar 1) + OCD – My Mental Illness Featurette

15:26
This is a mental health documentary featurette discussing my experiences with schizoaffective disorder bipolar type and obsessive-compulsive disorder. In this video, I explain the symptoms of schizoaffective disorder and the illnesses, in my case, that it's comprised of: bipolar 1 with psychotic features and schizophrenia. I also discuss OCD, particularly pure-obsessional OCD. I talk about my history with severe mental illness, and I talk about where I'm at now. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Schizoaffective disorder is a combination of a mood disorder—in my case, bipolar 1—and schizophrenia. Bipolar 1 is a mood disorder characterized by uncontrollable mood swings ranging from mania to depression. Bipolar 1 involves full-on mania as well as, in most cases, severe depression. Mania is a mood state marked by euphoria or irritability, hallucinations, delusions, aggression, risk taking, impulsivity, hypersexuality, racing thoughts, concentration issues, rapid speech, restlessness, and difficulty falling asleep. Depression is a mood state marked by hopelessness and sadness, apathy, guilt, discontent, crying, sleep issues, weight issues, agitation, fatigue, concentration issues, and thoughts of suicide. Schizophrenia is a thought disorder involving positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms. The positive are symptomatic additions to the person, including hallucinations, delusions, dysfunctional thinking, and agitated movement. Negative symptoms take away from the person, including flat affect, reduced pleasure, difficulty starting and sustaining activities, and reduced speaking. Cognitive symptoms affect the mind, including inability to understand information, focusing issues, and short term memory problems. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is an anxiety disorder involving uncontrollable, recurring thoughts, called obsessions, and respective behaviors, called compulsions, that are repeated over and over.

Understanding Mental Illness, Episode 1: What is Mental Illness?

58:03
This is the first in a series of programs produced to encourage a better understanding of mental illness. Often using schizophrenia as an example, this program explores what we now know may be some of the causes of mental illness, the latest treatments, and the future of care for the mentally ill.
Depression and Chronic Pain

07:12
Due to psychosomatic symptoms of mental illness, chronic pain can be caused by depression. Meaning that because of our depression we can feel like we are in pain all the time. Today I want to talk about how chronic pain (or being in pain for many weeks without a break) can lead to depression. Imagine if you are in pain more days then not, it would be really hard to sleep, you wouldn't want to be out with other people, and you may even struggle to concentrate. There can also be legal and financial issues associated with chronic pain as our medical bills pile up and we attempt to get disability. I only mention these issues so that you can grasp just how hard having chronic pain can be, and why it is so closely linked to depression. I also did a video on chronic illness with Hank Green where he talked about grieving the loss of what his life could have looked like. Click here for more: https://youtu.be/IXbAYg5pp9M He mentions how important it is that we try and focus on what we can do instead of focusing on the things that we can't do anymore. Shifting our thoughts to a more positive place is so helpful and I honestly believe can change our overall outlook on life. There are also treatment options available! Seeing a therapist who can work with you on processing the loss and grief that you may feel as well as helping you focus on what you can do will really help. They also mention how medication not only for your pain but also for your depression (ie. SSRIs, SNRIs, etc) can really help. Lastly, there are treatment centers that work to help us overcome both issues at the same time. The Mayo Clinic has a great one (link below) but if going into a treatment center like that doesn't work for you, you can also treat each issue separately through pain management and psychotherapy. The overall message I want you to hear is that help is available and it can get better. Even if the pain we feel doesn't go away, we can find ways to better manage our emotions around it and heal our relationships with ourselves and others. I hope you found this helpful! I know this is something many in our community struggle with, and that's why it's important to share this video and your experience in the comments so we can learn from each other and feel better.
