How To Cut Fencepost Tops Without Specialty Tools
I built a six foot tall cedar fence and several of the post tops extended past the top of the fence. I wanted to have a consistent way of cutting the tops off evenly and without excess variation. I crafted a jig out of pinewood, clamped it in place after squaring it up and cut the tops off using a standard circular saw. Super easy. Please follow common-sense sense safety standards when using power equipment and ladders.

Decorative Metal Fence Installation Tips: Installing Posts and Panels
In this video, Lowe's home improvement expert, Mike Kraft, demonstrates how to set posts and panels for a decorative metal fence. To learn how to layout and dig post holes and to find printable instructions for this video, visit http://www.Lowes.com/Videos The installation for this decorative metal fence is fairly easy, as the rails simply fit into holes in the post. This particular metal fence is safe to use around a swimming pool, which is something to consider when installing your fence. Before you set the posts in concrete, install the caps on top. Then make sure the bottom fence rail is 2 inches above the ground to allow for lawn work. Mark your posts where the ground line will be. When working with prefabricated fence panels, you only want to dig a few post holes at a time. The manufacturer will suggest spacing, but typically it's going to be the width of your panels on-center. There are three different kinds of fence posts available: 1. End posts - These posts have holes on one side 2. Line posts - These posts have holes on opposite sides 3. Corner posts - These posts will have holes on adjacent sides Mike first starts with an end fence post, adding enough gravel into the post hole to bring the mark level to the ground line. Then set the gate post against the layout line and hold it in place with clamps and braces. Follow by making sure the plumb is level with the post level. Now you can add concrete, making sure to fill until it is 2 inches below ground level to allow for dirt to be added and grass to grow. Now that the posts are set, you can start attaching the panels. You can either stair step your fence or change the panels to be racked. Either way, adjust your fence post spacing accordingly. First, set the panel in place on the gate or terminal post, sliding it into the post notches. You might want to use blocks of wood to support the fence panels as you are installing. Add gravel to the bottom of the next fence post hole and then lower your post, sliding it onto the panel. You might have to cut some fencing panels to fit properly. All you need to do to cut a fence panel is: 1. Temporarily set the next fence post in place 2. Measure between the posts on-center 3. Transfer the measurement to the panel, keeping equal space to the first picket on both ends 4. Cut the fence rails and notch the ends if necessary Once you have checked to see the next fence post is against the layout line, temporarily hold in place with clamps and braces. Make sure it is plumb with the post level, then add concrete until it is 2 inches below ground level. Finally, secure rails to the fence posts. You will continue this process, making sure as you go that tops and sides are straight. Changing the Exterior look and adding a little curb appeal is easier than you think! Here's just one of many One day projects that can bring your dated or lackluster house a little style. Box columns are easily constructed using tools many homeowners already have or can be borrowed from your handy neighbor. I'm using everyday, dimensional lumber from lowes and home depot. The particular boards are 2X8's and 2X6's. These columns are sitting on top of brick posts with concrete caps. The base block for the wood column, made from pressure treated lumber, is attached with an expanding masonry bolt to the concrete cap. Everything else is constructed with exterior grade decking screws. All screws are recessed into the wood with a special bit that drills a pilot and counter sink hole, it also keeps the wood from splitting. Check back for more videos soon, this is the first of many. And if you'd like to see more, I also have two other YouTube channels. One, "The Homestead Craftsman" https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRWsQfRiwGqBaVP_29OrZVw is all about being a craftsman, tools, wood, metal, leather, making, fixing and doing. The second channel is "Square Inch" https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1lTdH8FXMaexiX-IvsnSZw is specifically on the topic of another TINY house on wheels that I'm building. Check them both out and see what you think. Thanks for watching.

How to Build Stone Veneer Columns or Pillars
This is a demonstration of my four-step process to construct concrete columns/pillars, cover them with a natural stone veneer and then top them with poured concrete caps. This video is VERY long - one hour and 40+ minutes! I work slow, and I talk slow. Hopefully, you have lots of patience. If not, this video (and stone work in general) is probably not for you. I'm not very good with a camera, so things jump around a bit. I used Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0 to make the video. My wimpy computer can't really handle the processor-intensive rendering necessary for large video files, and the result is that the audio lags behind the video by a couple of seconds - kind of like watching those original Godzilla movies. Hey, I'm just keeping it real. Four years ago I had an idea to build 4 stone columns connected with cedar fence panels, and also to replace the painted brick hip-veneer on my home with a stone hip-veneer. I knew how to build the fence panels but I was starting from scratch on the stone work (except for some experience with ceramic and travertine tile). At the time I searched the Internet for how-to info and found some bits and pieces here and there but no real end-to-end instructions on how to construct the columns and work with stone. Based on this research I ordered a pallet of portland cement and several yards of play sand. I bought a Harry Homeowner cement mixer and tried to mix my own mortar. It turns out that cement mixers can't mix mortar, and it takes a great deal of experience to get the mixture of cement, sand and lime correct. Several frustrating days later I demolished what I'd constructed thus far, returned the pallet of cement and donated the play sand to my kids. I'd discovered pre-mixed Type-S mortar in the big box store. Just add water, work only in small, hand-mixed batches and you're off to the races. This current construction project began one lazy summer day in 2012 by sticking a shovel into the ground to fix a fence post, and eventually ended four months later with a new wood shed, three stone columns (concrete footers, block pillars, field stone veneer and colored concrete caps), and 70 feet of cedar fence panels and gates. I did not film the entire project but I did think occasionally to fire up the camera and record what I was doing. Eventually I had the thought that I might make a how-to video. Sometimes I realized I'd missed a concept and had to go back and record it after-the-fact. The result was a non-linear collection of video footage and voice-overs which I then had to edit into a semi-coherent, semi-linear "story" of how to build the columns. My apologies in advance if the narrative seems a bit disjointed - hopefully all the info you need is in here... somewhere. Good luck with your stone project! ps - at 20 minutes into this video I start talking about "speed squares" and "carpenter squares". What I actually meant to say was "speed LEVEL" and "carpenter LEVEL". Sorry about that!
