How to Plant a Vegetable Garden
Watch more Vegetable Gardening videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/177903-How-to-Plant-a-Vegetable-Garden Grow some of your own food by starting a vegetable garden. You'll eat better and save money. Step 1: Decide on a garden type Decide between a raised-bed garden or an in-ground one. Raised beds, which consist of purchased topsoil that sits within a wooden frame, are ideal if your soil is stony or sandy. The main advantage of an in-ground garden is that it needs less watering. Tip For an in-ground garden, test your soil to find out what nutrients it needs. Garden centers sell do-it-yourself kits, or you can arrange a test through the Cooperative Extension System, a national agricultural network. Find a nearby office on the USDA web site. Step 2: Pick a good spot Pick a spot that gets a lot of sun and isn't obscured by tree or hedge shade. Step 3: Prep the land Prepare the land by building your raised bed or clearing and tilling a patch of land to a depth of about one foot. A 10 foot by 10 foot parcel is a good size for a beginner. For an in-ground garden, install a wire mesh fence three to four feet high to help keep out critters. Tip Leave the top foot of the fence unsecured so that if an animal attempts to climb it, it won't support his weight and he won't be able to get over it. Step 4: Seeds versus seedlings Decide if you want to plant seeds directly in the soil; start growing seeds in small containers, like egg cartons, and then transplant them into your garden when they take root. Or, buy seedlings from a nursery that are ready to go into the ground. If you start with seeds, you'll wait longer to harvest your vegetables. Tip In colder climates, the shorter growing season makes some vegetables impossible to grow directly from seed. Step 5: Plan your veggies Plot out what you'd like to plant, taking into consideration what grows well in your area. Orient the rows east to west with the tallest plants on the north side so they won't shade the shorter ones. Step 6: Sow your seeds Start your seeds following the instructions on the package. Plant your seedlings when it's appropriate to do so, which depends on both the crop and your climate. Your local garden center or nearest Extension office can give you this information, or you can find it on the web. Tip Maximize output by planting a warm-season crop after harvesting a cool-season crop. Step 7: Try companion planting Plant compatible vegetables near each other. To find out which veggies grow better together and which are best kept far apart, type "companion planting" into a search engine. Step 8: Put in some flowers Plant a few flowers among your crops. They'll attract bees, which will help pollinate your plants. Did You Know? Guinness World Record holder Charles H. Wilber harvested 1,368 pounds of tomatoes from just four plants.

Building Raised Garden Beds For Schools and More - GardenFork
Building a Raised Bed for gardening in contaminated soil, or schoolyards or cement or asphalt areas. NEW info on using pressure treated wood: https://goo.gl/LYTiiW This raised bed plan uses pressure treated lumber, but protects the clean garden soil from the treated lumber with a plastic membrane. Its supported by cement blocks that allow drainage. I think this plan is great for school gardening programs. There's no issue with soil contamination by using clean garden soil in the raised beds. If you do a soil test and find lead in your soil, build these. School gardening with this easy raised bed design is a simple solution where they may not be much open space. You can build these and garden on an asphalt or cement playground. How to Start Seeds for a Vegetable Garden
I just wanted to share with you the method I use for planting seeds for my vegetable garden. I like to buy my seeds from the following online shops: Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds: http://www.rareseeds.com Seed Savers Exchange: http://www.seedsavers.org Seeds of Change: http://www.seedsofchange.com I like to start off in 72-cell trays because we plant a lot of veggies in our large garden plot. I start off with some store-bought seed starting/germinating mix. Fill my trays or small pots. I lightly tamp down each cell and then make a small hole in the center of each cell with the back of a chopstick making sure to only go about 1/4" -1/2" deep. I place 1-2 seeds in each hole and lightly cover with soil again and tamp down lightly to ensure good soil to seed contact. Then water the seeds in and place in an empty and cool oven that is completely turned off. I leave it in there for a few days checking them daily to ensure they are staying moist to aid with the germination. When the seedlings start to creep out of the top of the soil I will move the trays outdoors to give them some natural sunlight. I place my trays in a little homemade hoop house to protect them from the rain but so they still get the sunlight during the day. I bring them indoors every night to make sure no animals munch on them and put them back out first thing in the morning. I hope you'll consider planting some seeds this season whether it be in the ground or in pots. Growing your own delicious, nutritious and organic food is fun and healthy! Ideal for your patio, these raised flower beds and wooden raised vegetable tables are the perfect way to grow a range of plants, vegetables, herbs and more -- all out of reach of pests such as slugs and rabbits while allowing easy waist-height gardening and maintenance. These timber raised bed tables are a fantastic way to make gardening easier. There's no need for bending over and straining your back with easy all-round access and you don't have to worry about having to step on the bed in order to reach the other side. Strong and sturdy, these raised beds are made from FSE pressure-treated timber for a resistance to fungal decay and wood-boring insects, so they're built to last. Strong construction means that the superior model is even able to support your weight, so you can sit and/or lean on it for easy raised bed gardening. Being high off the ground will protect your plants and vegetables from a range of the usual pests and diseases, but you can even go a step further by installing our covers and hoops system that provides a choice of three different covers and netting according to your need. These add an additional layer of protection from birds, butterflies, caterpillars and an assortment of bugs including carrot fly and cabbage root fly while providing sufficient air, warmth and sunlight. These covers also allow you to buy and grow plants and vegetable out of season or simply extend the season of plant growth into colder months.
