Dr Roy talks about how he has always had an innate sense of curiosity, asking questions about things no one else would ask about or often even had answers to. After starting his work as an oncologist, that curiosity and willingness to explore new things lead him to asking his cancer patients questions about their family and relationships, their life's journey and their current circumstances, and he found a common thread amongst his patients. Find out about the three questions that Dr Roy asks his patients and the answers all of them have in common. Falling in love with the practice of meditation and seeing the effects it has had on his own life, Dr Roy encourages many of his patients to start meditating themselves. He speaks about how many of us are so disconnected from our emotions and usually tend to suppress pain, trauma and grief instead of acknowledging it in order to heal. He speaks about how his work an an actor has affected his own emotional life and capacity, and how he applies this knowledge now to his work with his patents. Dr Roy speaks about his upcoming book "Healing Before You’re Cured" in which he shares the principles of healing that he has gathered as a holistic physician, encompassing meditation, cognitive psychology, traumatic discovery and healing, as well as nutrition combined with 25 years of Western medical training. He talks abut how often we look at one aspect of our life in order to cure an illness, but since our beingn-ess encompasses body, mind, spirit and soul, it is so important to approach the healing process by looking at all of these aspects in order to create health on all levels. Find out how you can be or become healthy through a holistic approach of life!

Developing fused predictor of disease aggressiveness and treatment response

01:10:54
Traditional biology generally looks at only a few aspects of an organism at a time and attempts to molecularly dissect diseases and study them part by part with the hope that the sum of knowledge of parts would help explain the operation of the whole. Rarely has this been a successful strategy to understand the causes and cures for complex diseases. The motivation for a systems based approach to disease understanding aims to understand how large numbers of interrelated health variables, gene expression profiling, its cellular architecture and microenvironment, as seen in its histological image features, its 3 dimensional tissue architecture and vascularization, as seen in dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE) MRI, and its metabolic features, as seen by Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) or Positron Emission Tomography (PET), result in emergence of definable phenotypes. At the Center for Computational Imaging and Personalized Diagnostics, we have been developing computerized knowledge alignment, representation, and fusion tools for integrating and correlating heterogeneous biological data spanning different spatial and temporal scales, modalities, and functionalities. The long term research objectives are to explore via efficient computational and pattern recognition methods, the existence and correspondence of biological patterns across heterogeneous data scales and modalities. An understanding of the interplays of different hierarchies of biological information from proteins, tissue, metabolites, and imaging will provide conceptual insights and practical innovations that will profoundly transform people’s lives. Dr. Anant Madabhushi is the Director of the Center for Computational Imaging and Personalized Diagnostics (CCIPD) and a Professor in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering, Pathology, Radiology, Urology, General Medical Sciences, and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Madabhushi received his Bachelors Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Mumbai University, India in 1998 and his Masters in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Texas, Austin in 2000. In 2004 he obtained his PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Rutgers University as an Assistant Professor in 2005. He was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure in 2010. In 2012 he accepted the position of Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University, Department of Biomedical Engineering andis currently directing a center on computational imaging and personalized diagnostics. He was promoted to full professor in 2014. Dr. Madabhushi has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals and conferences. He has 6 issued patents with over 20 patents pending in the areas of medical image analysis, computer-aided diagnosis, and computer vision. He is an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering Letters, BMC Cancer, and Medical Physics. He is also on the Editorial Board of the Journal Analytical and Cellular Pathology. He has been the recipient of a number of awards for both research as well as teaching, including the Department of Defense New Investigator Award in Lung Cancer (2014), the Coulter Phase 1 and Phase 2 Early Career award (2006, 2008), and the Excellence in Teaching Award (2007-2009), along with a number of technology commercialization awards. He is also a Wallace H. Coulter Fellow and a Senior IEEE member. His research work has received grant funding from the National Cancer Institute (NIH), National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, private foundations, and from Industry. He is also the co-founder of Ibris Inc. a startup company focused on developing image based assays for breast cancer prognosis, and Elucid Bioimaging Inc., a Boston based startup focused on developing imaging technologies for predicting presence of vulnerable carotid plaque. How Government Threatens Freedom of Speech

02:16
In this short clip from a panel discussion, ARI's Steve Simpson talks about threats to free speech from government. Here's a transcript: Steve Simpson: I don’t want to minimize government — government is always a potential threat to free speech. And it’s an actual threat both here and in Europe. I think it’s actually worse in Europe because you guys have hate speech laws, which are a serious, serious threat to free speech. But, I mean, if you talk about college campuses — we’ve discussed the impact of Title IX and the fact that — and you can think about anti-discrimination laws, I mean, campaign finance laws are a threat. There are all kinds of governmental threats, both overt that are easy to see and then, more sort of covert — I mean, the very existence of public universities I see as a threat to freedom of speech – because we’re financing people’s ideas, and then the question is: Whose ideas do you finance? And then you have a scramble for more government money, and that kind of crowds out — the truth sort of gets crowded out that way. Or people stop caring about the truth one way or another, and they just are fighting for funds. So I don’t want to minimize government. The way I would put it is that the primary threat to free speech, as with any other right, is the initiation of force by criminals, governments, the pope, organized religion. And then, you know, in the olden days it was criminal gangs and, you know, the kings and the popes – these days it’s modern governments. Or, if we end up allowing what’s happening on college campuses now, which is essentially, you know, criminal gangs of students — that’s the way I would put it — roving gangs of students who attack other people for speaking out; that if you ruin the rule of law, you will not have free speech anymore. So we have to be really clear about: The real threat is, you know, using force against people and whether that comes from government or private people. =========== The panelists are Steve Simpson, director of Legal Studies at the Ayn Rand Institute and editor of "Defending Free Speech"; Flemming Rose, author of "Tyranny of Silence: How One Cartoon Ignited a Global Debate on the Future of Free Speech," and Dave Rubin, creator and host of the Rubin Report. The event, "Free Speech Under Attack," took place at Objectivist Summer Conference 2017 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. Live at Home as You Get Older: The LIFE Center

02:24
Since 1998, Living Independently for Elders (LIFE), a practice of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, has been providing a unique, interdisciplinary system of all-inclusive healthcare for frail seniors, which enables them to live at home. The center has served more than 1,000 West and Southwest Philadelphia seniors and is currently the only Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) run by a school of nursing. Funded by Medicare and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Public Welfare, LIFE offers seniors, usually those faced with probable nursing home placement, the choice to remain with their families while receiving care. The center also enables those family members who provide care and would not otherwise be able to work the ability to work and have confidence their loved one is being taken care of. As a more economical alternative to a nursing home, LIFE provides nurse-led care where patients are treated holistically by taking care of the whole person, instead of treating problems when they arise. LIFE members are picked up in vans daily and brought to the center, where meals are provided and activities can range from gardening, bible study, jewelry making, and art classes -- a popular activity and one that has produced pieces that were hung in the capitol rotunda in Washington, D.C. Throughout the day members can meet with nurses, podiatrists, physical therapists, primary doctors, dentists, and other members of the LIFE healthcare team. Making sure the LIFE community's needs are heard, a council of elders meets monthly to help guide the policies and values of the center. At the end of the day, LIFE members are taken home, although the care from the center doesn't stop. To find out more about the LIFE center visit: www.lifeupenn.org. WWII Reunion: Women in Military Medicine

50:36
As part of the National World War II Reunion held on Memorial Day weekend on the National Mall in Washington, the Library of Congress Veterans History Project sponsored several programs presenting compelling accounts of WWII history. Speaker Biography: While living in Staten Island, N.Y., Col. Margaret E. Bailey joined the Army Nurse Corps in 1944 and received orders to report to Ft. Hauchuca, Ariz., as a 2nd Lieutenant. During the war, she cared for soldiers returning from service in Europe. Bailey remained in the service following the war and became the first African American nurse promoted to the rank of Colonel in the Army Nurse Corps. She retired after 27 years of dedicated service. Following her retirement in 1970, she served as a consultant to the Surgeon General of the United States. Currently, she is active in her church, nursing sororities, and the American Nursing Association. Speaker Biography: In 1939, Anna (Urda) Busby resigned from Hackensack Hospital to join the Army Nurse Corps by way of the American Red Cross. She reported to her first assignment at Fort Jay, Governor's Island, N.Y., where she underwent basic training. In 1940, Busby was assigned to transport duty in the Panama Canal Zone aboard the USS Chateau Thierry. She traveled a second time to the Panama Canal Zone as one of only two women aboard the USS Hunter Liggett. After serving at Fort Adams in Newport, R.I., Busby headed for Tripler Hospital where she would witness first-hand the "day that will live in infamy." Speaker Biography: Marian (Sebring) Elcano, known as "SeaBee" by her comrades, joined the Army Nurse Corps in 1943, trained in Pennsylvania, and received orders to report to Camp Gordon, Ga., as a member of the 45th Evacuation Hospital. In 1943, the unit deployed to the European Theater. They landed in Scotland, and settled in Wooton-under-Edge, England, where nurses were billeted in private homes. On D-Day(+10), Elcano moved into Normandy with the Second Evacuation Hospital. During the horrific Battle of the Bulge, Elcano's hospital unit sustained intensive bombing at Eupen, Belgium. The semi-mobile hospital unit moved more than 20 times across Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes, Germany and Central Europe. Elcano separated from the Army in 1946, married, had five children and nine grandchildren. She currently serves a volunteer nurse in retirement facilities in her community. brooklyn DA Kenneth Thompson dies at 50 from cancer

01:53
Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson, the first African-American to hold the office and whose career included internationally high-profile cases in private practice as well as a stint as federal prosecutor, died Sunday after a battle with cancer, just days after announcing he would be undergoing treatment. He was 50. Thompson's family said he died at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. "Ken was a dedicated public servant who embodied the highest principles of the law, and his grand presence will be sorely missed," said Gov. Andrew Cuomo. He said flags would be flown at half-staff on Monday in tribute to Thompson. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said, "With a life and promise cut far too short, our city was blessed with but a glimpse of Ken's unwavering commitment to justice and his unrivaled pursuit of a more fair system for all those he served." Thompson had announced last Tuesday that he would be taking absences from his position to undergo treatment for cancer, saying, "As a man of intense faith, I intend to fight and win the battle against this disease." He didn't specify what kind of cancer he had. Thompson defeated long-standing office holder Charles Hynes to take over the district attorney's office in January 2014. In his tenure, the office expanded an initiative that reviews cases for potential wrongful convictions. He also prosecuted Peter Liang, a New York Police Department officer who was tried in the death of an unarmed black man in a housing project stairwell. Liang was found guilty of manslaughter, but a judge downgraded it to criminally negligent homicide. Thompson decided against seeking prison time in sentencing. "He was a giant among those seeking to reform the criminal justice system and we are all privileged to have worked under his transformative leadership these past three years," said Chief Assistant District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. Thompson also worked in private practice. He represented Nafissatou Diallo, the hotel maid who accused former International Monetary Fund leader Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault in 2011. That case was dismissed.

Lonnie Lynne LaCour * Rest In Peace Part 1

13:17
Our friend Lonnie Lynne LaCour passed away on 12 January 2012 at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital, in Darby, Pennsylvania after a long bout with a reoccurring cancer. Born Alice Brammer in Philadelphia, she was a resident of Folsom Pennsylvania for over 20 years. She went to college, received a degree in communications, became a disc jockey, and worked for several radio stations, playing bluegrass and traditional country music. Lonnie was very active with American Legion Post 193, VFW Post 928, Kalmar Nickel Foundation and the Pine Lands Cultural Society. She also toured through Vietnam entertaining the troops, and in recent years routinely entertained at Veterans Hospitals and Nursing Homes. A die-hard traditional country bluegrass performer she rubbed shoulders with such notables as Bill Monroe, George Jones, John Duffy, Charlie Sizemore, and Oscar Sullivan. Among the countless music venues, she also graced the stages of "Jamboree USA" in Wheeling, West Virginia, the "Don Owens" TV show in Washington DC, and the "Town and Country" TV show, created by Country Music Hall Of Fame member Connie B. Gay and the Costellos' "Eastern Shore Opry" in Snow Hill Maryland. Like most veteran country performers of yore, Lonnie played her fair share of restaurants, honky tonks, and dives, sometimes 4-6 hours a night, for a pittance or for tips. She worked extensively with steel guitar wizard Bud Isaacs and the song "Learning" features Isaacs on steel. It was recorded in 1968 at the Foy Willing studio in Hollywood and was released on her LP "For Old Times Sake." Lonnie Lynne LaCour is the daughter of the late Alfred B. and Alda Engel Brammer and was also predeceased by her husband Robert C. LaCour who died in 1971. Survivors: Her daughter Ramona LaCour of North East, MD; her sister Sally Roth of Glenolden; 2 nieces and a nephew. Funeral Service will be 1 PM Tuesday at Marvil Funeral Home, 1110 Main St., Darby, PA 19023. Burial will be private in Arlington National Cemetery. Contributions to Pine Lands Cultural Society, P.O. Box 657, Waretown, NJ 08758 would be appreciated. Guest Book online at http://www.marvilfuneralhome.com Rest in Peace Lonnie
