DIY Wind Turbine | How to Make Tutorial | Homemade Wind Turbine | Project Guide for Kids Read text version here : https://www.newphysicist.com/make-wind-turbine/ I have been thinking to make wind turbine (a large horizontal axis one) since I first published a small wind turbine video on youtube and a blog post here a few years back. That video went viral. Then I decided to make one large functional wind turbine. The former didn't give me even 1.5 volts. I know building a medium sized wind turbine will take a lot of time to complete. But, It didn't, I've Just finished a medium sized wind turbine with only 5 days, 2 hours per day after my regular work. By the way, Here I am going to give you an overview of my experience in making this wind turbine Project. Make Wind Turbine 1.Propeller Making A propeller is the most important part of a wind turbine. The propeller is used to convert wind energy to rotational energy. This rotational energy can easily be converted to electricity by coupling it with a dynamo. Wind turbine blade should have appropriate curvature and weight to get maximum efficiency. So, I bought 6mm thick, 8 Inch Heavy duty PVC pipe ($5). Then I used a hand grinder to cut it into wind turbine blade shape with 1:3:20 ratio. You can easily make rotor to connect these blades using a Plate washer, Nut, and GI L-clamps. Take 8 inch, 4mm PVC Pipe Cut it into blade shape 1:2:30 Ratio as shown in the figure Smoothen the edges. Take a 3 Inch washer and weld GI Pieces on It. Screw PVC blades On it. 2.Turbine base Making Another important function of a wind turbine is its ability to face the wind automatically. Otherwise, it won't be able to maximize the wind energy harvesting. This mechanism is called yaw mechanism. It works with the help of a flexible turbine base and a tail. I used a johnson wheel to make this flexible joint. The tail will help the propeller to face the wind. As a result, we will get maximum output. We can cut aluminum sheet very easily to any shape. Cut it to a proper shape. Take a Johnson wheel and remove the wheel Weld it to one side of a 1" square GI Pipe (1.5m) Connect bearings in a Piece of GI pipe and Place it on the johnson wheel. Weld a hose clip on it to fix dynamo. 3. Tail Making The tail will help the propeller to face the wind. As a result, we will get maximum output. We can cut aluminum sheet very easily to any shape. Cut it to a proper shape. Cut aluminum sheet into wind turbine tail shape Screw it on a GI Piece Fix the tail on Wind turbine Base SAFETY FIRST APPROACH Keep in Mind that safety must be the first priority. If you are not familiar with angle Grinder, I strongly recommend you not to use it. In any case, children should not experiment with it. Also, when welding you should wear eye protection glasses, face shield, and hand gloves. Ask professional welders to get your work done. That would be better. I have worked as a welder and wireman two years, so I have some experience it such things. Thank God. 4. Assemble Each Component together Watch Video Closely to assemble each Component Together. Make sure the crank wheel and flywheel align straight. Then Connect the output to a battery or multimeter. Place the wind turbine outside where the wind blows. Homemade Wind Turbine Generator! Wind Power Generator. Easy DIY Instructions. items needed: PVC Pipe, propeller blade, DC motor and wire. Stand is made of 3/4" PVC. Produces essentially "free" usable power to run radios and small lights etc... add the optional battery/inverter for making AC power. adding a storage battery also makes it possible to run larger items (whether the wind is blowing or not) ...and add a small inverter to run AC powered items. this "table top" size model would be useful in many off-grid situations including SHTF/Emergency/Power Outage/Camping/Rural Living etc... simple assembly/disassembly. durable, lightweight and portable. notes: propeller blades of this kind can be found at your local hobby store. use PVC Pipe Cement to make the stand more "permanent". the wire i used is from an old extension cord. since filming i've reduced the length of the wire from 8 ft. down to 2 ft. (shortening the wire increases power output). low power radio was used. operates on as little as 28-35ma at 2v-3v. (43ma at 2.4v was average output using small desk fan). volt/amp readings on meter were all over the place when i used the leaf blower (5 to 10 times higher vs. desk fan). leaf blower produces wind up to 140MPH. i blasted the wind turbine with blower from about 3 feet away for over 5 mins and it stood firm entire time.

I built this windmill using ductwork pipe cut for the blades screwed to 1/2" tubing. Came out 14 feet to the top of the blade. Took a couple of afternoons and about 125 dollars. The main pulley on the hub was 23.00. Works well.

You can check that project here and watch the video. Then I decided to make DIY vertical axis wind turbine which is fully operational. Yesterday I completed that project and here I am going to share my experience. Now I have created two different types of the wind turbine. Horizontal axis wind turbine and vertical axis wind turbine. Materials Needed to make DIY Vertical Axis Wind Turbine You need six inch PVC pipe, end blocks, Cycle rim, GI pipe, GI Plate washers, steel anglers, 12v dynamo, belt etc. First of all, you need to cut it into 2 pieces vertically. Then cut them into 60 centimeters each. Connect end blocks to both ends. You need excellent welding skill to fasten steel anglers on the cycle rim. Watch the video below to get a clear idea about everything. I used a small dc motor as a dynamo. I suggest you buy an efficient dynamo online if you seek high power output. Instructions to make DIY Vertical Axis Wind Turbine. First of all, I warn you not to touch electric devices if you aren’t familiar with it. Handling electrical devices, such as a drill, welding machine, angle grinder are risky and may result in accidents. So handle them carefully. Wear eye protection glasses, welding shield, hand gloves as precautions.   Step 1 You need to buy PVC pipe and cut it down vertically into two pieces as shown in the figure. We need 8 pieces of 60cm pieces of half PVC. Connect end blocks to both the ends of PVC pipe using solvents or screw. Make necessary holes on the end blocks. It will cost around $10 Step 2 Buy two cycle rim from any hardware shop. Also, buy 16 steel anglers and fix them on the cycle rim by welding. It’s better to use steel rods to weld steel anglers on a steel rim. It will cost around $15 Step 3 Take hole on two GI Plate washers and weld nuts on them. Now weld the plate washers on the both sides of a GI pipe. Now connect Two cycle rims on the GI pipe. Fix all Apparatus on a stand as shown in the video.Now is the time to connect each and every piece of PVC on the cycle rims. Step 4 Fix dynamo and rope on the wind turbine. Place the wind turbine outside or place a wall fan in front of it. More efficient the dynamo more output you’ll get. Connect the wire to the dynamo and fix it on wind turbine base. CPVC Fittings CPVC Fittings Wind Turbine Base Wind Turbine Base Dynamo Dynamo Step 7 Place propeller on the wind turbine base. Vertical axis wind turbine is ready. Place the wind turbine in front of a Fan. Yeah. It’s working fine Check the output voltage using a multimeter.

I've seen others attempt this design but completely miss that this is a WING LIFT type turbine. The fin angle, surface and material is all critical to making this work correctly. Using a drag configuration (as I've seen) will not work very well. This design just works so I would start by viewing the videos here at my channel first, this is not a difficult project. DIY Wind Turbine Update
Just an update or extension from my previous video since I wasn't happy with the quality of the audio or the rushed nature of the video. This is still my little 4W ceiling fan that I converted to a wind turbine. I'm thinking about upgrading it to the 9W version which isn't that much bigger. In this video I talk about how I took the ceiling fan mount apart and instead screwed the shaft of the fan directly to the PVC tubing. I used a mixture of water and electrical PVC pipe so make a swiveling platform. Thanks to the swivel and the back fin, the turbine will always move itself to be facing into the wind and generating electricity. The output from the ceiling fan is 100-200V AC, completely unregulated. Thankfully, most 110-220V AC appliances that have built in switch mode power supplies will happily work with the fluctuating input voltage. This video was shot in Circuit Makati from Ayala Malls in Metro Manila, the Philippines. well today i made my first VAWT and can now focus on converting its rotation to electricity. unfortunatly after i made this i remembered we get almost no wind, but when the leaves fall in the winter the trees will allow more wind and it might turn faster. either way it's a fun build. i would love your suggestions on how to upgrade it or build a new one. my aunt and uncle own a big hill that gets constant winds that can blow you over, i may test a turbine there if i don't have fast enough winds at home.

DIY Wind Turbine - WindBlue DC-540
This little film shows the making of a wind turbine that is based around a WindBlue DC-540 PMA. The turbine was made in two days using some great tools and with a clear plan in mind. It is currently mounted on a 4m mast with three guy wires. Output is connected to the battery bank via a diode. Charge control is handled by a Xantrex controller and dump load. Maximum unloaded voltage is 68v, not measured the current yet. This is not a WindBlue endorsed video, I am simply a customer who ordered the DC-540 from their web site and had it shipped to the UK.

DIY Wind Turbine Power Generator
For under 5 USD you can build a DIY wind turbine that can generate 3-4 watts. The goal is to store that power in a battery to later charge cellphones and power basic LED lighting. The quality of this video isn't up to a level that I'm happy with. But this is the third day and third location I've shot this video at. And I want to at least get something online, showing the ceiling fan wind turbine in action. This wind turbine is made from a P140 (3USD) ceiling fan, water and electrical PVC tubing and a cardboard rear fin. The ceiling fan outputs an unregulated high voltage AC (~200V maximum). This video was shot at a foot bridge along Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City, Philippines. Thanks to the lady who helped me collect the fan blades after a gust of wind sent them flying :P Full testing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-ylItFF2po I'm having a lot of technical problems lately. For example I keep encountering memory card errors which mean I shoot a whole video and don't find out until afterwards that nothing was able to save. I suspect this is due to the contacts being worn out on my SD and micro SD cards. My big Canon HFG30 keeps having problems with the external and internal displays where it will turn off or display heavily green tinted images. My Rode SmartLav+ has been with the PH distributor for over a month and still hasn't been replaced under warranty. Although Rode have told me they will personally send a replacement from Australia if the local distributor don't replace it in the next 3 days. And my Zoom H1 microphone has had problems ever since I bought it. It was an early version which was sold before Zoom fixed some known issues. Aside from the known issues, it has also suffered from corrosion due to the high humidity in the Philippines. Long story short, I need 2 new SD cards, 1 new micro SD card, replacement of my Rode SmartLav+, a new Zoom H1 or similar and for my Canon HFG30 to be serviced. I was able to build a wood wind turbine that can produce over 100 watts for less than $10. The wind turbine has 3 homemade carved wood blades and a diameter of 4.5 feet. I used a door hinge to build in tail furling to protect the wind turbine against spinning too fast.

just completed final assembly of my scratch built 10 foot wind turbine ( http://www.otherpower.com/turbineplans.shtml ) and couldn't wait till morning to see her fly....but as murphy would have it, no wind. oh well , she is still a thing of beauty! waiting for wind to test output, should yield from100-1000 watts depending on the wind speed, at ave wind of 12-14mph estimate 250 watts with max output of 1 kw in 25 mph wind. used plans by "homebrew wind power" book available on the web.
