Family of 7 Living Completely Off-Grid in Northern Canada!

10:09
In this video, we meet Jeff, Rose, and their 5 girls who are living completely off grid on a 40-acre piece of land in Northern British Columbia, Canada. They built their own off-grid house for less than $25,000 with cedar posts sunk into the ground like a pole barn, log rafters, plywood, foam insulation, and a living roof. The house was so affordable to build because they didn't have to excavate or pour a concrete foundation, dig a well, or install a septic system. They have 2 solar power systems to power everything they need. The first solar system is just one solar panel that generates 12-Volt power for their lights, cell phones, and music player. The larger system is a 2.5 Kilowatt solar power system installed on their shop roof with a lithium ion battery bank that powers their full-sized fridge, a chest freezer, washing machine, as well as a mixer, blender and a toaster. They have a backup generator but they only have to use it for about 40 hours per year during prolonged cloudy or snowy periods. All of the water the family uses is rainwater collected from their shop roof and stored in a tank under the shop floor to keep it cool. They carry buckets of water into the house for cooking, dishes and showers. To produce clean drinking water, they filter their rainwater in a passive water filter called a Burkey (check them out here: http://www.berkeyfilters.com). The grey water from their kitchen sink and shower drains into a shallow grey water field in the backyard. They have 2 composting bucket toilets and they sprinkle sawdust into the buckets after each use to absorb moisture and prevent smells. For heat, they cut their own firewood for their Blaze King catalytic wood stove, and for their antique cookstove in the kitchen that they use for cooking and baking. Jeff and Rose homeschool their 5 girls for a few hours each day and also ensure that their kids are learning diverse life skills like growing their own food, caring for horses, raising bees, and more. We're very impressed with the clever solutions this family has come up with to make off-grid living seem so easy. If you want to learn more about this inspiring family and follow their journey, check out their Gridlessness project — they have a blog and a YouTube channel. President Obama on the Romney-Ryan Tax Plan - Rochester, NH

02:23
Share this: http://OFA.BO/PSR8Rr Tweet this: http://OFA.BO/BdNe3m President Obama was at a grassroots event in Rochester, NH to discuss middle-class economic security. President Obama has already cut taxes for a typical New Hampshire family by $4,200 over four years, helping families afford to send their children to college, buy their first home, pay for health care and child care. The centerpiece of the Romney-Ryan economic proposals is a $5 trillion tax cut, with a lot of it going to the wealthiest Americans. In addition, Romney and Ryan put forward a plan that would let Governor Romney pay less than 1% in taxes each year. And this tax plan would actually raise taxes on middle-class families with children by an average of $2,000.

Mary I - Bloody Mary (British Monarchy Documentary) | Timeline

48:24
Mary was a queen driven by faith, she would send hundreds of her subjects to burn at the stake. Written and presented by Dr David Starkey, this is the compelling story of two of England's most striking monarchs: a brother and sister, tied by blood and affection, and torn apart by religion, power, and some of the bloodiest episodes in English history. Mary (who was to become England's first reigning Queen since Matilda but who is best known to generations of British schoolchildren as Bloody Mary) was the first born child of Henry VIII. For 20 years she was heir to her adored father. Then came the birth of her little half-brother Edward, and Mary found herself cast into the shadows, ignored by her father and declared illegitimate by Act of Parliament. Nonetheless she became very attached to the motherless boy, and he to her, declaring her his dearest sister. When Edward was just nine, their father died and the young boy became King, surrounded by advisors and further distanced from his beloved elder sister. But by now they were divided not just by power and status, but also by faith. Mary was a staunch Catholic, Edward a reforming Protestant: at this time such matters were not an issue of personal choice but matters of life or death, treason or heresy. Within a few years Mary was under virtual house arrest and banned from celebrating mass; within a few more years Edward was dead at the tragically early age of 16 and Mary became Queen. She set about making England a Catholic country once more and hundreds of Protestants, including Edward's most trusted advisors, were burnt at the stake because they refused to renounce their faith. RSD Focus Groups Announcement by RSD Supt. Antony McLetchie

03:36
September 14, 2015 To: Rochester School for the Deaf Parents and Guardians of Studentsand Members of the Community At-Large with a Vested Interest in Rochester School for the Deaf From: Antony A. L. McLetchie, Superintendent/CEO Regarding: Focus Groups on the Future of RSD On the first day as your new Superintendent and Chief Executive Officer, April 13th, I said that the next chapter of RSD is now open. We have blank pages in front of us, ready for us to write new chapters as they happen. Like a good book, a good chapter needs to have clear direction and goals and everyone in the RSD community will be involved. Now I want to set up two important focus groups for my entry plan. The first group is parents and guardians of RSD students. The first Parent Focus Group is scheduled for Wednesday, September 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the school auditorium. The second focus group for parents is scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., also in the auditorium. Parents with students in all grade levels are encouraged to attend one or both of these special focus group sessions. Interpreters will be provided. The RSD Parents Focus Groups will be a sharing of your vision and your perspectives as parents on what you want to see in the future regarding your child’s education here at RSD. The second focus group is for members of the community at-large. Those individuals can be any one or any group in and around Rochester who has ever had any involvement with RSD. They could be members of Deaf organizations in Rochester or hearing organizations in Rochester, Deaf or hearing individuals or business owners, really any individual who has a vested interest in RSD and its future The first Community Focus Group is scheduled for Thursday, October 1, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Rochester Recreation Club for the Deaf (RRCD), 1564 Lyell Ave. in Rochester. The second focus group for members of the community at-large is scheduled for Tuesday, October 20 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the RSD auditorium, 1545 St. Paul Street. Any and all in the community are encouraged to attend one or both of these special focus group sessions. Interpreters will be provided. I hope that you as parents of RSD students or those in the community with an interest in RSD and its future will take the time and consideration to attend a focus of your choosing. If you are not able to attend any of the focus group sessions that’s fine. You can e-mail me your ideas and thoughts in writing or in ASL video form to this address specific to my entry plan: Mailto:rsdsupt@rsdeaf.org. Again, I hope to see you there at the focus groups. You and I are equal partners in this together. We are equal in the responsibility to make sure that RSD is standing strong now and well into the future and providing a top-quality education for our students and create our future leaders. I will see you at one of the focus group sessions. Thank you for your enthusiastic involvement.

New Horizons - Tiny House Living

06:11
Avai d'Amico was living in a "typical, suburban" large house in Rochester, Minnesota when he lost his job a few years ago. After thinking about the long, dreaded winters in his state and wanting to change his life, he decided to sell most of his possessions- including the five bedroom, 2,000 square foot house- and purchase a 180 square foot "tiny house" on wheels. He moved to Tucson and says it's one of the best decisions he's ever made. d'Amico has a business degree but he's found his calling in cinematography and is currently working on a pilot comedy about life in a tiny house: The Tiny House Movie. Brownstone Brooklyn's Racial Divide: Why Are the Schools So Segregated?

11:18
Will moving the lines on a map integrate Brooklyn's public schools? What if instead of redrawing catchment areas, poor parents were given the same choices middle-class families take for granted? P.S. 8 in Brooklyn Heights is one of New York City's most sought after public elementary schools. It’s surrounded by luxury condominiums and nineteenth-century town houses. Young families pay top dollar to move into the zone with the goal of laying claim to one of P.S. 8’s coveted kindergarten spots. Three quarters of a mile from P.S. 8 is another public elementary school called P.S. 307. It serves a tiny section of Brooklyn that on a map looks like it was carved out of the area assigned to P.S. 8. And the zone is fully occupied by the Farragut Houses, which is a large public housing project. As a result, demographically these two schools just a short distance apart look nothing alike: Ninety-percent of the students at PS 307 come from economically disadvantaged homes, as compared to 16 percent at P.S.8, and 95 percent of P.S. 307 students are minorities, while at P.S. 8 the figure is 40 percent. And there’s nothing unusual about this particular district; race and class divisions exist in public school systems all over America. Sixty-two years after the Supreme Court ruled against separate but equal, school lines are drawn in a way that keeps kids who are rich and poor—black and white—apart. Now, in this particular district in Brooklyn, with P.S. 8 experiencing severe overcrowding, the community is making a serious attempt to bring more integration. In early January, a local board that represents the district voted 6 to 3 to redraw the boundary between P.S. 8 and P.S. 307. In theory, this will mean hundreds of white affluent families will start sending their kids to a school that’s currently predominantly poor and minority. But will parents go along with the plan? "In general, the lesson of integration over the past 30 or 40 years has been don't just compulsorily reassign families and expect integration to occur," says Richard Kahlenberg, a senior fellow at the left-leaning Century Foundation who is considered "the intellectual father" of the movement to integrate schools. "Upper middle class families have options," he says. "They can move to a different district. They can send their kids to private school." Wendy Lecker—a senior attorney at the Education Law Center, who's part of an informal working group to bring more diversity to New York City schools—is more sanguine. "Many parents don't themselves have experience with integrated education," she says, "and I have a little more faith in parents that...when they understand the benefits of being in a diverse school district they will choose to participate in the public school system." Meanwhile, walking distance from P.S. 8 and P.S. 307 there are three charters with diversity as part of their core mission. They're taking a different approach to integration—within the very same district. Charters are public schools that are free from many of the bureaucratic rules that govern traditional public schools, and they aren't strictly tied to a particular neighborhood, so kids from anywhere in the city can apply for a slot. The newest of the bunch is the International Charter School of New York. "We have everyone from parents who work on Wall Street to families who live in transitional housing," says Matthew Levey, the school's executive director and founder. "Diversity is something that everyone should value," says Levey, "but if you force [parents] to value it then they don't." Today most charter schools in the U.S. aren’t diverse at all, but Kahlenberg believes that if parents had more choices many would recognize the immense benefits and opt to send their kids to integrated schools. "I'm excited about the possibility of charter schools, empowering teachers and integrating students," he says. Written, shot, edited, and narrated by Jim Epstein. You Have the Right to Remain Silent – California Bill Strengthens Miranda for Kids

04:51
Take Action: http://fairsentencingforyouth.org/miranda-rights-for-youth/ Currently in California, children—no matter how young— can waive their Miranda rights. When law enforcement conducts a custodial interrogation, they are required to recite basic constitutional rights to the individual, known as Miranda rights, and secure a waiver of those rights before proceeding. The waiver must be voluntarily, knowingly, and intelligently made. Miranda waivers by juveniles present distinct issues. Recent advances in cognitive science research have shown that the capacity of youth to grasp legal rights is less than that of an adult. This is especially true for very young, developmentally disabled, or cognitively delayed children, and for those with mental health problems.

His parents came to America from Cuba in 1956 to pursue a better life. His father became a bartender, and his mother became a cashier, a maid and a Kmart stock clerk. Growing up in Las Vegas and Miami, Marco watched how his parents worked hard and sacrificed to give their children a life better than their own. They never made it big, but they were successful. They achieved the American Dream. And that is why he is running for president. For too many people, the American Dream feels impossible. Opportunity and success seems far away. But Marco has worked tirelessly to restore the hope and promise that the American Dream is real and that every American can achieve their own unique version of that dream. As U.S. Senator, Marco has led a bold offensive to institute innovative, conservative ideas to address the fundamental issues our country is facing and to restore hope in the American Dream. His ideas are firmly rooted in this simple truth – the American economy has changed significantly in recent decades and our policies must change with it. He has proposed conservative reforms to our nation’s anti-poverty laws, tax code, regulatory policies, higher education system, vital senior safety net programs and national defense. For Marco, this country has provided him so much -- the chance to graduate from the University of Florida and then the University of Miami’s law school. The chance to marry his wife Jeanette in 1998, with whom he is raising four children: Amanda, Daniella, Anthony and Dominick. And the chance for both of them to give back through public service as a West Miami city commissioner; a Florida state legislator that rose to become majority whip, majority leader and speaker of the house; and since 2011, as a U.S. Senator. For all the opportunities this country has provided Marco and his family, including all that Jeanette has accomplished through her charitable work, he is indebted to this great country. He believes that he owes America for the opportunities that this country has given him and his family. He believes the American Dream is still possible for all Americans. But make no mistake: it will require new leadership and a bold conservative reform agenda built for the 21st century. Join Marco today to reclaim the American Dream and make sure this century becomes a New American Century. Marian Wright Edelman: What Parents and Teachers Need to Know

05:02
Teachers and parents working together can change the odds for children. That's what Marian Wright Edelman said to the National Parent Teacher Association. This month the national PTA is highlighting the challenges facing Black children in America as part of its Every Child in Focus Campaign. Each day, 310 Black babies are born into extreme poverty. Over 80 percent of fourth and eighth grade Black public school students cannot read or compute at grade level. Black students made up only 18 percent of children in public schools in 2009-2010 but were 40 percent of the children who received one or more out-of-school suspensions. Listen to Marian Wright Edelman's message to the National Parent Teacher Association. Learn more about the state of America's children http://bit.ly/1egnV2i .

Family to build group home for autistic son

02:02
Rochester, NY - It's a question facing every parent: What is the right time for a child to move out? That decision is even more difficult for parents of children with developmental disabilities. For Sherry and Michael Battisti, the conversation started as their daily routine with their son Anthony became more difficult. "As he's gotten older it has been getting harder and harder to take care of him, and we didn't want to leave our daughter with the responsibility to take care of him," said Sherry Battisti. Anthony is 20 and has autism. The Battistis started looking for a long term home for Anthony a few years ago. "We put him on a waiting list when he was 15. Not because we wanted too. They warned us back then it was about a 15-20 year waiting list," said Sherry Battisti. Instead, they've come up with a new plan. Michael has been a home builder for 35 years, so they decided to build one for his son and five other young adults with autism. "I can't begin to think about the sleepless night we've spent worrying about it," said Michael Battisti. The design is finished, and the property in Gates was donated. The family is also working with a local agency to meet state regulations. The Battistis have also received immeasurable support from friends, family and complete strangers - an aspect that has given them confidence and furthered their belief that they are doing the right thing

RIT on TV News: Internet Bandwidth

02:30
Dan Tobin, director of Information & Technology Services at Rochester Institute of Technology discusses the potential impact from a change in Internet broadband pricing with WROC-TV (Channel 8). Chances are you've never even considered how much you download on the internet. You should. Under Time Warner's new plan you'd get five to 40 gigabytes per month before being charged, depending on your plan. "I don't think most people would know where to classify themselves. Most people just have the computer on and have the connection available and they use it however they choose," says Dan Tobin, director of operations at RITs information and technology services department. We took a look at some of the most common downloads; most don't take much bandwidth. Facebook: an average application is about 350 kb. It would take dozens of downloads to get one gig. Then there's music. An album download at the highest quality is about 83 megabites. Download about 12 albums and you've hit one gig. But photos, that's a different story. You can take a up a little bit of bandwidth or a lot. It depends on what you're doing. "You decide to put those up to a web page to Flicker, to Picasso web, whatever, don't really know how much you're taking because those tend to get sized down," says Tobin. Among all the things we measured out the one thing people seem to be using the most these days is YouTube. However, there was no way to really measure how much bandwidth each download on YouTube actually consumes. "If you have kids and multiple computers like we do at my house, it's really hard to fathom how much bandwidth without measuring or taking a look that we're really using," says Tobin. The biggest bandwidth vacuum: movies. A high-quality, average two hour movie is 8 gigs, which can max out your monthly allowance from Time Warner, depending on your plan. Time Warner did survey its customers and found on average a five gigabyte monthly plan is what most people would use. "So an 8 gig movie, once you've hit your cap, would cost you about 8 dollars to download above and beyond whatever charges you'd have to download that from the service that you're using in the first place," says Tobin.
Mental Health Action Plans - Mayo Clinic

04:46
After a decade of research and interviewing more than 6,000 U.S.families and children, Mayo Clinic researchers— in partnership with numerous national mental health advocacy organizations — issued new simple-to-understand guidelines to help identify youth who may have mental health disorders. Issuing these tools is consistent with the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General call in 2001 to develop a set of easily identifiable mental health disorder action signs among youth for use by parents, professionals and community members. Despite well-documented levels of emotional and behavioral concerns in the nation's youth, studies have repeatedly shown that up to 75 percent of youth with mental health disorders such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, anxiety, and eating disorders are usually not identified, and youth do not receive the care they need. After surveying more than 6,000 parents and children about mental health services in the United States during the past decade, researchers created a mental health disorder action signs tool kit to help easily identify symptoms for youth who may be experiencing mental disorders. Click here for a copy. The findings and epidemiology that led to the toolkit are published in the journal Pediatrics on Friday, Oct. 28, 2011. Mayo Clinic Dr. Peter Jensen discusses the toolkit and the background behind it.

Press Conference - Release of Feasibility Study regarding a Military Academy in Rochester

01:17:57
On Tuesday, April 26th, the Rochester Board of Education released the final report of a Special Advisory Committee that has been examining the feasibility of establishing a military academy in Rochester. A press conference was held in the third-floor conference room of the District’s Central Office Building, located at 131 West Broad Street. The Special Advisory Committee was convened in February, and is chaired by Todd Baxter, Executive Director of the Veterans Outreach Center, and Lieutenant Colonel Ulises Miranda, Senior Instructor of the JROTC program at Rochester Early College High School. The Committee is comprised of students, teachers, community leaders and members of the military services. Since February, the Special Advisory Committee has been examining a wide range of factors involved in developing a military academy in the Rochester City School District, including admissions, curriculum, instruction, financing, and community and parent interest. The final report of the Advisory Committee will be reviewed by the Board’s Finance Committee and Excellence in Student Achievement Committee, and ultimately advanced to the full Board for consideration. If approved by the Rochester Board of Education, the planning process would require approximately one year and approval would also have to be obtained from the New York State Education Department. With regard to the efforts involved in this feasibility study, Rochester Board of Education President Van Henri White remarked, “It is with great appreciation that the Board accepts the Special Committee’s report. We know that the best way to show our respect and gratitude for their work is by not allowing this report to collect dust, but rather by diligently examining the recommendations and deciding whether opening a military academy would make sense. We look forward to that process and making a final decision.” The Final Report of the Special Military Academy Advisory Committee will be posted on the District website on Wednesday, April 27th, at www.rcsdk12.org.

LINDA EVANS guest stars on BACHELOR FATHER

03:42
Bachelor Father is an American sitcom starring John Forsythe, Noreen Corcoran and Sammee Tong. The series first premiered on CBS in September 1957 before moving to NBC for the third season in 1959. The series' fifth and final season aired on ABC for the rest of the show's run. A total of 157 episodes were aired. The series was based on "A New Girl in His Life," which aired on General Electric Theater on May 26, 1957. Bachelor Father follows the adventures of Bentley Gregg, a wealthy bachelor attorney living in Beverly Hills who assumes the responsibility of raising his niece, Kelly (Noreen Corcoran), after her parents died in an automobile accident. Other members of the cast included houseboy Peter Tong (Sammee Tong), teenage neighbor and Kelly's on and off boyfriend, Howard Meechum (Jimmy Boyd), Kelly's best friend, Ginger Farrell (Bernadette Withers) and Jasper, the dog. Withers appeared in 51 episodes from 1957-1962; Boyd in 37 from 1958-1962. Plots center on Bentley's adjustments to his new role as an adoptive parent, his search for the right woman to share his life, Kelly facing the usual problems of adolescence and young adulthood and her ritual of passage from high school to college and Peter's misadventures with his family, love life and financial schemes. The program's final season storylines led to Kelly's impending marriage to Bentley's junior partner Warren Dawson (Aron Kincaid). The two met, became engaged, interacted with other couples and even met Dawson's parents (who flew in from New York on short notice), all in a span of three episodes. Without mention or explanation, Kincaid's character was dropped after four episodes and by the series finale, Kelly is seeing a different man with no marriage plans. Meechum (Boyd) appears in several Season 5 episodes, but he is never developed as a serious romantic interest for Kelly. As the series was canceled after 157 episodes, Bachelor Father did not have a formal series finale. According to John Forsythe, the Bentley Gregg character was based on two well-known Beverly Hills bachelors at the time. He combined their names and used it for the character's in the program. Because of the implication in the program of Gregg's aversion to marriage, no serious thoughts were given to casting a 'regular' or steady woman for him. Instead, Gregg is forever dating different women with only a handful ever getting a 'second' date with him. Forsythe noted that casting the main characters took considerable effort. Then actor (and future California governor and United States president) Ronald Reagan, who hosted General Electric Theater from 1954-1962, suggested Corcoran for the role, believing her to be a 'typical teenager' and closer to what a normal 13-year-old was like, which Forsythe agreed. Corcoran was already an experienced actress with movie and television roles to her credit. She was 18 years old when the program left the air and had virtually 'grown up' into a young woman during the show's run. Casting Bentley Gregg's houseboy was difficult as well. Sammee Tong was cast based primarily on his experience as a stand-up comedian. Forsythe believed much of the program's success resulted from the interaction between Tong and himself and that Tong had great comic timing. He also stated that Tong's character was unique for the time and that he was not the "typical" Asian house servant. Forsythe insisted on Tong being a major character on the program. Several of the program plots center around Tong, many dealing with his attempts to improve his position in life. Although none ever pan out (much like Bentley or Kelly) he does develop as a character through the life of the program. Among the series guest stars were Edgar Bergen, Bill Bixby, Billy Gray, Ryan O'Neal, Frankie Laine, Mary Tyler Moore and singer Patti Page. Eddie Anderson, who portrayed "Rochester" on The Jack Benny Show, reprised his role in the Season 5 episode, "Pinch That Penny." Besides the 'Benny' link, the series had connections to The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show as Harry Von Zell appeared in five season three episodes as Bentley Gregg's friend and next-door neighbor. The Burns' son, Ronnie Burns, appeared on two episodes, as well. Fifteen-year-old Linda Evans also appeared in a guest spot on the series as one of Kelly's friends. Evans and Forsythe later starred in the primetime soap opera Dynasty together.
