Speaker Biography: Marcel Dinger is the Founding CEO of Genome.One, Head of the Kinghorn Centre for Clinical Genomics (KCCG) at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and conjoint Associate Professor at UNSW Australia. Genome.One is a world-class clinical genomics service and develops specialist software and analytics solutions to enable precision healthcare worldwide. Genome.One was one of the first companies in the world to implement the HiSeq X Ten genome sequencing platform, which has capacity to sequence 18,000 human genomes per year, and provide a disease diagnostics service based on whole genome sequencing. He has worked in bioinformatics and genomics since 1998 in both commercial and academic capacities. He was awarded his PhD in 2003 from the University of Waikato in New Zealand, has published 90 papers attracting more than 10,000 citations, and is recipient of several highly competitive awards and fellowships. He is also a founder of two other successful start-up companies. In 2016, Marcel was admitted as a Fellow into the Faculty of Sciences of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australiasia and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Webinar: Point-of Care Genomics: A New Horizon in Personalized Healthcare Webinar Abstract: Genomic information has the potential to improve management or potentially prevent or enable early intervention of virtually every disease. However, despite massive technological leaps and exponential decreases in costs, genomics currently plays a relatively niche role in healthcare, with clinical use largely limited to diagnosis of pediatric disorders or as a last resort in guiding cancer treatment. The Garvan Institute’s Kinghorn Centre for Clinical Genomics was one of the first sites in the world to acquire technology to sequence whole human genomes at scale. The service, now incorporated into spinout Genome.One, routinely sequences over 1,000 human genomes per month and is clinically-accredited for diagnostic testing of or predisposition to genetic disease. In addition to serving as a highly effective approach for diagnosing diseases that can be caused by large numbers of different genes, whole genome sequencing has potential for reanalysis in different contexts. This potential argues for a new testing paradigm, where genomic sequencing is undertaken once in an individual’s lifetime and analysed throughout their lifetime to guide clinical decision-making and optimise health management. Here I will present on our implementation, clinical accreditation and performance of whole genome sequencing in the routine diagnosis of genetic and rare diseases and its utility in personal health management and disease prevention. I will also discuss the challenges and opportunities for using genomic information to inform health at point-of-care, the incorporation of genomic information into medical records and its potential to transform medical research. Eli Van Allen: Clinical computational oncology for precision medicine

The ability to create increasingly complex genomic data generated directly from patient tumors may impact our understanding of cancer and affect clinical decisions about cancer treatment. As the quantity of genomic data generated from individual cancer patients greatly expands, innovations will be needed to successfully implement large-scale genomics at the point-of-care. These include new ways to 1) interpret large-scale data from individual patients and 2) understand why patients respond (or don't respond) to existing and emerging cancer therapies such as targeted therapies, chemotherapies, and immunotherapies. In this talk, Dr. Van Allen explores how the emerging discipline of clinical computational oncology is powering new approaches for the clinical interpretation of large-scale genomic data and how these data are helping physicians understand why certain patients benefit from cancer therapies when others do not. While still in its infancy, this new field of clinical computational oncology may drive the widespread implementation of precision cancer medicine in the years to come. Eli Van Allen, M.D. A postdoctoral research fellow at the Broad, Eli Van Allen is an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an oncologist at Dana-Farber/Partners Cancer Care, with a focus on genitourinary cancers. His research melds his background in computer science with cancer genomics in order to develop algorithms that analyze and interpret genomic data to help patients. This research is at the front lines of precision cancer medicine, including understanding why resistance develops and identifying targeted therapies for patients. A native of Los Angeles, Eli studied Symbolic Systems, an inter-disciplinary major at Stanford University that applies computer science to other academic disciplines, including linguistics and neuroscience. While at Stanford, he helped found Camp Kesem, a summer camp for children whose parents have cancer. This experience sparked his interest in oncology, and as a medical student, he realized that his talents in computer science could help propel advances in the field. (Eli still volunteers at Camp Kesem, which now has locations throughout the United States.) After graduating from Stanford in 2003, Eli received his M.D. from UCLA, and completed a residency in internal medicine at UCSF before coming to Boston and completing a medical oncology fellowship at the Dana-Farber/Partners Cancer Care program. The world of medical and genetic data is evolving exponentially. As more information is available about our health, the behaviors and processes of our cells, and the blueprint of our genes, we are learning new ways to correlate and discover patterns on what makes us human, and how we affect each other. Amina Ann Qutub is an assistant professor of bioengineering at Rice University. She is also co-founder of DiBS, an adaptive visualization software startup. Qutub received a Ph.D. in bioengineering at UC-Berkeley and UCSF, and a B.S. in chemical engineering from Rice. She trained as a postdoc in biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University. Qutub integrates computer science with experiments to understand the design of human cells. Her work gives insight into how to control cell behaviors and regenerate tissue for applications to treating cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. An engineer and artist “who paints with algorithms” to achieve sophisticated models of biology, Qutub’s goal is to keep humans healthy, happy and a step ahead of the machines. Researchers are now rapidly discovering biomarkers to probe the underlying pathology of a disease and define the dynamic changes that occur during infection. One researcher is at the cutting-edge of this field: Professor Michael Snyder at Stanford University is the first to relate personal genomics to 'omics' activity and interpret the medical relevance. And Professor Snyder should know best: he has been sequencing his genome and routinely drawing his own blood to track the changes in a billion biomarkers; including RNA, proteins, metabolites and antibodies to predict and validate disease risk. In this webinar, Professor Snyder will discuss the profiling of personal transcriptomes, proteomes, cytokines, metabolomes and autoantibodies to create integrative Personal Omics Profiles (iPOP). Professor Snyder will explain how iPOPs can provide critical insight into the causes and development of disease. Since then, Michael Snyder has held several eminent research positions at both Yale and Stanford, and is currently the Stanford Ascherman Professor and Chair of Genetics and the Director of the Center of Genomics and Personalized Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. His laboratory was the first to perform a large-scale functional genomics project in any organism, and currently carries out a variety of projects in the areas of genomics and proteomics both in yeast and humans. These include not only a central role in the ENCODE project, but also the large-scale analysis of proteins using protein microarrays and the global mapping of the binding sites of chromosomal proteins. His laboratory built the first proteome chip for any organism and the first high resolution tiling array for the entire human genome.

CANCER HAS WON IT'S GAME OVER It is with a sad and heavy heart that I say this, my recent surgery showed each site was cancerous with no margins. Stains showed mass deposits all over my left side and back, with deep deposits towards internal organs. Time frame is irrelevant now, I do not want to tell anyone what is expected to happen now, until I am ready. I should explain for people I was told to enjoy the next two weeks as after that they expect me to be to sick to enjoy life. I am still going to have my samples tested in the hope we can save a life in the future, I will do everything in my power to make that a reality! We will all continue the research! My family and I knew this day would come, but it has come faster than any one expected, my team are fighting for me to try everything possible, but my body is failing fast, I can feel it and we all know it. No one should have to go through this mental and physical pain in this day and age. I will now be documenting the end of my life, my fight, my struggle in the hope that I can make people smile, laugh and spread some joy around the world. In the less than 0.01% chance I manage to beat this, I will spend the rest of my life helping others in horrific situations, cancer is just one awful thing that affects people! I will leave you with this, smile, laugh and see the beauty in everything everyday, make the most of being able to be you, but most of all never regret anything! Make every day count, because like me you may wake up unable to continue to do what you love. My dreams are just that now, dreams, white clouds in the sky that I will never reach. Balaji Panchapakesan, associate professor of mechanical engineering and director of the Small Systems Laboratory at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), began working years ago on technology that uses carbon nanotubes to treat cancer, but then moved on to other work in nanotechnology. When his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013, he return to his earlier work. As a result, he has developed a liquid biopsy chip that may prove to be a breakthrough in cancer diagnosis.

As immediate past chair of the American Association of Neurological surgeons/congress of neurological surgeons section on women in neurosurgery, I was instrumental in bringing our group from a fringe organization to a recognized section in our national organizations. The development of our “women leading the way” leadership program has filled a void in neurosurgical education and allowed partnering of women neurosurgeons with women in the medical device industry. A portion of our program focuses on mentorship of female medical students, which matches 70-80 female students with neurosurgeons. We continue to look at the issues that face women in neurosurgery residency and practice to promote retention (samadani et al, accepted Journal of Neurosurgery 2014) Julie G Pilitsis MD, PhD completed an accelerated 6 yr BS/MD program at Rensselaer and Albany Medical College. She went on to complete a PHD and neurosurgical residency at Wayne State University. She then completed a fellowship at Rush University in Chicago in functional neurosurgery, specializing in deep brain stimulation and stimulation for chronic pain syndromes. She is an R01 funded associate professor at Albany Medical College and is well published in her field. She is currently the immediate past chair of the AANS/CNS section on women in neurosurgery and the current chair of the AANS/CNS section on pain. Dr. Leach holds a B.S. degree in Biology from Hillsdale College, a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Ohio University, was a Fellow in the Division of Experimental Therapeutics at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research for the US Department of Defense and was a visiting Fellow at the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health. Following his postdoctoral work, Dr. Leach joined the groundbreaking biotechnology company, Affymetrix, and led the implementation of advanced molecular technologies in academic, government and industrial research labs. Dr. Leach founded the computational biology software company Teneo Sciences (now Sapio Sciences), and created artificial intelligence algorithms and visualization applications to analyze large genetic datasets. Joining with Shady Grove Center for Preimplantation Genetics and Integramed, Dr. Leach co-created advanced human embryo diagnostics for in vitro fertilization applications. Subsequent to this, he was the Vice President of Scientific Services for deCODE Genetics in Reykjavik, Iceland, while it was the world's largest and most productive genetics research company. A Google TechTalk, 5/11/17, presented by Le Lu ABSTRACT: Deep Neural Networks in Medical Imaging and Radiology: Preventative and Precision Medicine Perspectives (the final version from GTC, GTCx, GTC-DC 2016) Employing deep learning (DL), especially deep neural networks for high performance radiological or medical image computing is the main focus. We will present the motivation, technical details and quantitative results of our recent work at NIH for three core problems: 1) Improving Computer-aided Detection (CAD) using Convolutional Neural Networks and Decompositional Image Representations; 2) Robust Bottom-up Multi-level Deep Convolutional Networks for Automated Organ Segmentation; 3) Text/Image Deep Mining on a Large-Scale Radiology Image Database for Automated Image Interpretation. We validate some very promising observations of using DL to both significantly improve upon traditional CAD tasks in (1) and enable new exciting research directions as (2,3). Insights and future directions will be discussed. Speaker Info: Dr. Le Lu Le Lu has served as a staff scientist since 2013 in the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences, National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, Bethesda, Maryland. His research is focused on medical image understanding and semantic parsing to fit into new clinical practices, especially in the areas of preventive early cancer detection/diagnosis and developing novel precision imaging bio-markers, via large-scale imaging protocols and statistical (deep) learning principles. Le worked on various core R&D problems in colonic polyp and lung nodule CADx systems, and vessel/bone imaging at Siemens Corporate Research and Siemens Healthcare from 2006 to 2013, and his last post was a senior staff scientist. He has been named on 18 U.S. and international patents and is the inventor or co-inventor of 32 inventions. Le has authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers. He received his Ph.D. in computer science from Johns Hopkins University in 2007. He won the NIH Mentor of the Year award in the staff scientist/clinician category in 2015. He was an Area Chair for IEEE CVPR 2017 and ICIP 2017, and a senior program committee member (equivalent to Area Chair) for MICCAI 2016 and 2015.

North West Coast NHS Genomic Medicine Centre - Meet The Team - 27th July 2015

A Liverpool group vowed to make the region a renowned leader in genomic medicine at its launch event on the 27th July. North West Coast NHS Genomic Medicine Centre, a partnership led by Liverpool Women’s Hospital alongside the North West Coast Academic Health Science Network, Liverpool Health Partners and involving several other NHS Trusts from the region, launched as part of the ‘100,000 Genomes Project’, backed by Prime Minister David Cameron. Angela Douglas, Programme Director for the group, said: “For the region to be one of only 11 successful bidders to embark on this project is already a massive achievement, and a feather in the cap for the North West Coast, but we want to do so much more than that. With the knowledge and skills contained across all of our various partner organisations, we have a real opportunity to make the North West Coast an internationally recognised centre of excellence and expertise in genomic medicine.” The ‘100,000 Genomes Project’, a three year project launched by David Cameron, has been designed to tackle the genetic causes of cancer and rare diseases. Angela Douglas continued: “The challenge of the project will be to embed its outcomes into routine health practice. The genomics community looks forward to working towards meeting that challenge. The project has the potential to transform the future of healthcare. It could improve the prediction and prevention of disease, enable new and more precise diagnostic tests, and allow personalisation of drugs and other treatments to specific genetic variants.” The initiative involves collecting and decoding 100,000 human genomes – complete sets of people’s genes – that will enable scientists and doctors to understand more about specific conditions. Professor Sue Hill, Chief Scientific Officer at NHS England, who opened the event, said: “I was delighted to be present at the launch of the North West Coast NHS Genomic Medicine Centre. This marked the start of a transformation journey for the NHS to embed the use of cutting-edge genomic technologies into clinical practice, to improve outcomes for patients . The palpable commitment and enthusiasm of clinical staff, managers and patients to make the North West Coast NHS Genomic Medicine Centre a success was inspirational.” It is anticipated that around 75,000 people will be involved in this project, which will include some patients with life threatening and debilitating disease. North West Coast Genomics Medicine Centre will be recruiting patients with diseases that the group has particular specialist services for, and patients may well be asked if they wish to take part in the coming weeks and months. Some participating patients will benefit because a conclusive diagnosis can be reached for a rare and inherited disease more quickly, or because a treatment for cancer can be targeted at the particular genetic change that is present in their cancer. But for a number of patients, the benefit will be in the improvement in our knowledge of the influence of genomics on disease and how it is expressed in an individual, how other people can be helped with similar diseases in the future, and how different types of tests can be developed to detect changes beyond the genome. Life Sciences Minister George Freeman added: “Our understanding of genomics is transforming the landscape for disease diagnosis and medicines research. We want to make the UK the best place in the world to design and discover 21st century medicines which is why we have invested in the 100,000 Genomes Project. We also want to ensure NHS patients benefit which is why we have now selected NHS hospitals to help us sequence genomes on an unprecedented scale and bring better treatments to people with cancers and rare diseases for generations to come.”

Medical Researchers have made measurements suggesting that application of a Direct Current (DC) voltage prior to and/or during the Radio Frequency Ablation of cancerous tissue can improve the efficiency of the ablation process, resulting in larger areas of ablation than can otherwise be achieved. A prototype system, consisting of a software-programmable DC power supply incorporating sensors for measurement of Voltage, Current, Power, Impedance and Temperature as well as a control port for controlling a commercial Radio Frequency Ablation System (in this case, a Boston Scientific RF3000) has been built and demonstrated to provide a tool for further research and hopefully in the longer term, equipment useful in clinical situations. The system is interfaced via a Bluetooth link to an Android or IOS mobile phone or tablet which runs an App that controls and monitors the ablation process. The App can program ablation sequences as a series of steps that define a ””cooking profile”” and continuously monitor and record the measurement parameters. Sequence commands take the form of: ””Apply ramped DC power from 50mW to 100mW over the first 5 minutes, then continue this while further applying an RF Power of 40W for another 5 minutes”“. If measured parameters extend past pre-defined limits, the ablation is cancelled for safety concerns.Data logs (and corresponding ablation sequences) can be saved directly from the phone/tablet to cloud-based storage for further analysis. The system is capable of recording in a matter of minutes what researchers have previously spent years investigating. This development shows the potential of IoT connectivity and how taking advantage of existing infrastructure such as phones, tablets and the internet can drastically reduce the cost of development of sophisticated systems, because the display, user interface, communications infrastructure and computing platform are already. A relatively small investment in hardware and software can result in powerful connected equipment at a low cost. Robert has over 35 years experience in the design of Mixed-Signal Integrated Circuits and Systems with his company RADLogic, and formerly with Austek Microsystems and CSIRO. He has been involved in all levels of hardware and software design from transistor-level circuit design and writing microcode through to array processor design and software application development. He believes in taking advantage of existing technologies when possible and shows in this presentation how to use mobile technologies and existing equipment to address a real-world medical application.
