If you describe any of these symptoms to your doctor, he or she may want to start with some basic tests to see how your heart muscle is functioning. They will listen to your heart, do an EKG, and oftentimes, go on to do a cardiac ultrasound, or echo cardiogram. Heart failure has a spectrum of severity. It can come in mild, moderate or severe. And oftentimes, the mild stages may have minimal or no symptoms. The good news is there is treatment for heart failure and there are ways to prevent your risk. So the classic symptoms, in conjunction with a doctor's evaluation would be how to recognize if you have heart failure.

Living with a Chronic Heart Disease

My sister and I have been patient's part of a research programme focussing on a genetic heart disease called HCM for many years now. It's a condition where the heart muscle thickens, blood flow gets sticky, a clot can form and cause a catastrophic stoke - the unexplained sudden death you often hear about with young, fit professional athletes. We opted to get involved with the 'Watkins genetic research programme' led and watched over by professor Watkins himself. We have had to steer away from endurance exercise and competitive sport, drinking and smoking are totally forbidden but know when things change inside our heart's the team can help us manage our condition. But so many others haven't been so lucky. We have been fortunate enough to not only be aware of this genetic condition but receive specialist care and treatment. However without the funding many people who aren't as fortunate as us will not know about this disease until it's too late. The BHF has helped halve the number of people dying from heart and circulatory disease in the UK but sadly every day hundreds of people lose their lives. Well, the first thing to say is that obesity is a major risk factor for heart disease. Obesity increases the risk for heart disease in two main ways. One is obviously you're not getting the benefits of regular exercise. Those benefits are a reduction in blood pressure, cholesterol, and overall, well-being. But in addition to that, obesity itself can lead to heart disease. It leads to a lot of changes in metabolism, or the way the body works. It could change the way we absorb fats and cholesterol, it can change the way we react to daily stress, and it can change our body's physiology to lead to things like high blood pressure. How obesity leads to heart disease is a very important problem in the United States. Obesity is an epidemic in the U.S. and in fact, 50 percent of Americans are overweight and a third of Americans are obese, and this number is only increasing, so it's become a real problem. Obesity leads to a lot of changes in the body, which can have detrimental effects. It can directly impact the hearts function leading to promotion of development of atherosclerosis, or blocked arteries in the heart, a weakening of the heart muscle, and in increased chance of arrhythmias, or abnormal heart rhythms. The treatment, would be to adopt a more heart-healthy lifestyle - to change the way we eat, making healthy choices, increase our cardiovascular exercise, and decrease the amount of stress in life. So, obesity definitely leads to increased rates of cardiovascular disease, but changing our lifestyles can definitely help reduce that risk.

If someone says "heart problems," we often think about issues that develop over time... like, heart attacks, coronary artery disease and even heart failure. But there's actually a heart condition you can be born with, and it affects more people than you realize. Dr. Christopher Snyder of Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland says congenital heart defects are the most common type of birth defects. In fact, the American Heart Association reports about eight out of every 1,000 infants in the U.S. are born with a heart defect each year. Many of those babies won't require surgery, but for those who do, it's a difference between life and death. Kelly Bowman reports.

In the chain of events of developing a heart condition you first get damage to the lining of the arteries. Cholesterol will then come in and start to heal it. The arteries become stiff and then you get the high blood pressure. We then get put on a statin, which is given a black label - because it causes diabetes which increases your risk of heart disease. And the blood pressure meds (thiazides and beta blockers) contribute to insulin resistance further causing the problem. Recently I had a question from someone who wanted to know if is it okay to do ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting if you have a heart condition, this is a big fat yes. In fact you will get a heart condition if you don’t do ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting and if you are going to do a typical high carbs you would get a heart problems. Let’s talk about why. Because in a chain of events that occurs before you get the buildup of cholesterol there is always a damage to epithelial lining on the inside of the arteries and what damages is that is high blood sugar and high insulin. Those two things will damage the wall, the cholesterol comes in as a band aid, same thing with the calcium and protein fibrin that comes in the artery to help heal it, it is not the bad guy it is just there to help heal it and then the person consuming too many carbohydrates they are going to have high cholesterol because those turn into sugar and those sugar converted into high cholesterol and you would take a drug for that and lower it called the statin but the problem with statins is it causes insulin resistance and more insulin so it keeps feeding itself. But then what happens is the arteries get stiff, calcium builds up and then you don’t have the elasticity so there goes the high blood pressure and then there is diuretic drug that we can put you on. The problems with diuretics is they deplete potassium also they will increase insulin and could cause insulin resistance as well. So it feeds itself as well, if you don’t have enough potassium, it is really hard to fix this blood sugar problems because people with high blood sugar and insulin resistance always have the potassium deficiency in the first place and by taking potassium you can actually improve that condition and stabilize blood sugars a lot better and the blood sugar and insulin problem will also cause high blood pressure because it is gonna harden the arteries and make the arteries in elastic so there is no expansion but no problem because we can put you in a diuretic to reduce the blood volume and the pressure should come down because it increases your risk for insulin resistance therefore it causes more insulin and propelling the problem further and also it creates the deficiency of potassium which you need to actually fix insulin resistance. In Rodents increase insulin, but in humans, it decreases insulin, decrease blood sugar as well as decrease A1C. I have another question from someone, does ketosis increase or decrease the risk of heart disease. The study that I am going to post down below is very interesting because they compared the study from rodents versus humans. I want to talk about what they found. When they put people on the ketogenic diet which is basically is more fat but the carbs are way down. Rodents increases cholesterol, increases LDL (bad cholesterol), decreases HDL (good cholesterol) and increases triglycerides. But in humans, decreases cholesterol, decreases LDL (bad cholesterol), increases HDL (good cholesterol) and increases triglycerides. This tells me that the inflammation and the problems in the artery are not an issue. Let’s talk about the pancreas, in rodents it increase insulin and in humans it decrease insulin, blood sugar and A1C because the main cause of the heart disease is high insulin and the ketogenic diet is designed to lower insulin. One little thing I am want to add is to make sure you are going to add intermittent fasting to then take it to the next level because that will also help you lower insulin even more and really make this numbers look really good. FranciscanHealth.org Franciscan Health Lafayette East, in collaboration with Tippecanoe Emergency Ambulance Services (TEAS), Lafayette Fire Department and the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s department will be conducting a community Heart Attack drill at 1:45 p.m. on Monday, July 20 at the Tippecanoe County 4-H Fair. Our goal is to help ensure our community understands the key risk factors for heart disease, recognizes the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and the importance of calling 911 so emergent intervention can be initiated immediately. As many of our staff understands, FSEH has a “STEMI Alert” which activates emergency processes prior to a patient arriving to Franciscan Health Lafayette East when they are having a heart attack. It is important our community fully understands the importance of activating the 911 system so emergency procedures can be initiated prior to the patient arriving at the hospital. In the United States, the consumption of fast food is very common. And unfortunately, we're getting to an era where we're seeing something we've never seen before. That is the emergence of a condition we call the obese malnourished where people are far overweight but are still malnourished in the sense of not having the important nutrients, vitamins, and minerals they need to live a healthy lifestyle. Fast food often also, subsidizes nature's natural products and substances with unhealthy additives and preservatives. These have also been linked to adverse health effects, not only for cardiovascular health but also health in general. In addition to fast foods, soda is also a very unhealthy product. It has really high sugar and no basic minerals or nutrients that would make it healthy in any way. It allows us to really consume a lot of calories in a short period of time without thinking too much about what we're taking in. It doesn't have any of the health benefits that other calories may have, like complex carbohydrates, fresh vegetables, or fresh fruit. Most doctors would recommend avoiding sodas in general whether it's diet or not. Sodas don't have anything inside them which have any nutritional value and are in fact not really a food. Doctors would recommend drinking healthier drinks, mostly water whether it's carbonated or flavored. Fast foods and soda are not part of a heart-healthy lifestyle and diet.

Heart disease is responsible for 40% of all deaths worldwide, making it the number one killer for both men and women. There are a number of factors that can increase the risk of developing heart disease. Some of these factors are beyond a person's control, while others are more related to lifestyle and bad habits. Cardiovascular disease is one of the most common types of heart disease that is associated with controllable risk factors. It is a disease in which blood vessels are obstructed or narrowed; it can lead to heart attack and stroke. Symptoms include chest pain or angina, shortness of breath, coldness or numbness in the extremities. In many cases it is not diagnosed until chest pain, heart failure or heart attack occurs. It is important to be aware of the signs of this disease and see a doctor if any of these symptoms arise. Regular checkups may also be beneficial in detecting cardiovascular disease in the early stages. Atherosclerosis is the most common form of cardiovascular disease. Smoking, lack of exercise, poor nutrition and being overweight are all risk factors that can be addressed with lifestyle changes. Arrhythmias are abnormal heartbeats. Symptoms can include a fluttering in the chest, a racing or very slow heartbeat, lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting and shortness of breath. Risk factors include excessive use of alcohol or caffeine, smoking, drug use and stress. Other causes are coronary artery disease, congenital heart defects, diabetes and high blood pressure. Congenital heart defects are a form of heart disease that people are born with. Generally, this type of disease becomes evident within the first few hours, days or weeks of life. The symptoms could include a pale gray or blue skin tone, swelling around the eyes and in the abdomen and legs, shortness of breath during feedings and slow weight gain. Other symptoms of non-life threatening congenital heart defects may be a shortness of breath or tiring easily during exercise, swelling of the hands and feet, and fluid in the heart and lungs. Researchers are not sure what causes congenital heart defects, but medical conditions, medication and genetics may be factors. Infections of the heart can affect the outer lining, the heart muscle or the inner membrane. An infection can cause fever, shortness of breath, fatigue, weakness, arrhythmias, coughing, swelling and spots or rashes on the skin. Bacteria, viruses and parasites cause heart infections. There is a link between infections of the heart and poor oral health. A thickening or hardening of the heart muscle is called cardiomyopathy. Breathlessness during rest and exercise, swelling of the legs and feet, abdominal bloating, fatigue, irregular heartbeats, dizziness, lightheadedness and fainting are symptoms of this type of heart disease. Studies have yet to determine the cause of cardiomyopathy. Treating diseases of the heart is easier with early detection. It is important to have routine physical examinations, inform your doctor of any family history of heart disease, and see your doctor as soon as you begin experiencing any symptoms. That's it! And when that normal, synchronized fashion is disturbed, someone can be said to have an arrhythmia. The first thing to note is that often times when people say they have an arrhythmia, they're really talking about a few extra heartbeats here or there, interspersed within a normal heart rhythm. And that's not usually what doctors are talking about when we mention arrhythmia. For doctors arrhythmias are irregular heart rhythms and they run a wide spectrum of severity, most of which are pretty benign or harmless. And some can be life threatening. The most common arrhythmia are those coming from the top chambers of the heart, and luckily, they tend to be more benign, or less harmful. Arrhythmia's coming from the bottom chambers of the heart can be life threatening, and always need medical attention. Your doctor may want to check to see if you have an arrhythmia when you complain about things like palpitations, or an abnormal sense of heartbeat. The testing is pretty simple. Usually, the doctor will order a monitor, which is a device that can check your heart rhythm for 24 hours or longer. The risk factors for developing an arrhythmia, or irregular heart rhythm, can be structural heart disease, where there's a problem with the way the heart is built or working. A ischemic heart disease, where you've had a heart attack from blocked arteries in the heart or congenital heart disease, problems from birth. The treatment for heart disease can be pretty simple, such as life style modifications, in terms of decreasing the amount of alcohol or caffeine you take in, or lowering your basic stress level. Things like increasing exercise also help to decrease the frequency of arrhythmias. Once your doctor diagnoses you with an arrhythmia or irregular heart rhythms, the treatments vary. Sometimes it's simple life style modifications and other times it requires a medication or procedure to help fix. So those would the basic signs and symptoms of arrhythmias.
