Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer

Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer Diabetes, especially if it comes on suddenly. Recently, the Mayo Clinic published startling research showing that 40 percent of pancreatic cancer patients had been diagnosed with diabetes one to two years before discovering they had a pancreatic tumor. Researchers believe the diabetes is caused by tumors that simply haven't been detected yet. The problem is, diabetes is very common, and the majority of diabetes isn't pancreatic cancer, so doctors are trying to develop screening tools to tell the difference. Right now, they say family history is an important clue. If you're diagnosed with diabetes that seems to come on suddenly and you have no family history of diabetes, bring this to your doctor's attention and ask for further screening for pancreatic cancer. Yellowing of the eyes or skin. Even a small pancreatic tumor can block the bile duct in the head of the pancreas, causing bile to build up. This causes jaundice. Itchy skin, palms, and soles of feet. A little-known side-effect of jaundice is itchy hands and feet. It's due to a skin reaction to the bilirubin, the yellowish brown liver chemical that causes jaundice. Lack of appetite. An Italian study found that six to eight months before being diagnosed with pancreatic tumors, patients reported a sudden drop in their appetite and a tendency to feel full after eating very little. Changes in taste. In the same Italian study, some of the patients surveyed said they'd suddenly lost their taste for coffee, wine, and smoking. In fact, they said, they felt "disgust" for the smell and taste of coffee and alcohol. Abdominal pain. Pancreatic cancer sufferers remember this pain as a gnawing pain, rather than a sharp cramp or ache, and it radiates toward the back. A characteristic clue: the pain goes away when you lean forward. An enlarged gall bladder. The same blockage of the bile duct that causes jaundice can also cause an enlarged gallbladder, as the bile builds up behind the duct. The good news is that an enlarged gallbladder can be seen on imaging tests, and it may even be possible for a doctor to feel it during a physical exam. Pale, floating, smelly stools. If a pancreatic tumor prevents digestive enzymes from reaching the intestine, the result is an inability to digest fatty foods. So you end up with loose, smelly "floaters" as a result of the excess fat. Doctors say this symptom, in particular, can be an early clue and is too often overlooked. Dark, tarry stools. Bleeding in the upper intestines causes this symptom. Sudden, unexplained weight loss. Weight loss is not always, as many people mistakenly believe, a sign of advanced cancer that's spread to the liver. It can also happen because a lack of pancreatic enzymes is causing fat to pass through the body undigested. New videos everyday! Did you know that more than one person a day dies from pancreatic cancer in Oklahoma? It is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States - so often deadly because it is seldom caught early. Currently, the five-year survival rate for patients with pancreatic cancer is only 4 percent. Experts at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center say that is because it is seldom diagnosed until it is in it's advanced stages. Now researchers at OU hope they may soon change that. Their work may bring a new blood test for pancreatic cancer in the not too distant future. This is research that brings hope of turning around the deadly statistics surrounding this often silent killer. This same research could lead to ways to identify other cancers at their earliest stages too.

Bleeding in the upper intestines causes this symptom. 10. Sudden, unexplained weight loss. Weight loss is not always, as many people mistakenly believe, a sign of advanced cancer that's spread to the liver. It can also happen because a lack of pancreatic enzymes is causing fat to pass through the body undigested. What do you do if you're worried about any of these symptoms? Document all symptoms, and report them to your doctor in as much detail as possible. If your doctor is convinced you have legitimate concerns (and remember, you may have to do some convincing), tests such as an ultrasound, a CT scan, and an endoscopy followed by a biopsy can be used to search for a pancreatic tumor. A blood test is now available for a biomarker called CA 19-9 that is released by pancreatic cancer cells. Unfortunately, by the time CA 19-9 reaches detectable levels, the cancer is usually no longer in the early stage, although the test is useful during treatment and for detecting recurrence. Another biomarker test, CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen), is also not sensitive enough to provide early diagnosis. While tragic early deaths like Steve Jobs' are the hard reality of pancreatic cancer, there are also people living productive lives thanks to an early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Such was the case with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who's still practicing after having a tiny pancreatic tumor surgically removed. Yes, she got "lucky," as she put it -- but she also got a CT scan, which is how the tumor was found. {The information provided on this channel and its videos is for general purposes only and should not be considered as professional advice. Pancreatic Cancer: A Beautiful Story of Survival

24:08
When patients diagnosed with cancer are admitted to the hospital, many times we see them at their lowest. From chemotherapy and radiation treatments to surgeries and diagnostic test. It can be an emotional roller coster for not only the patient but also all of their loved ones… including their medical staff… I remember about 2 months ago, I was feeling down. Normally I’m an extremely upbeat person. However, working on the oncology unit was taking it’s tole on me. I realized, that I was mistakingly focusing on some of the patients who didn’t make it. Unfortunately, many of the patients who recover fully do not make their ways back in the the hospital. I can’t blame, the hospital would not be high on my list also. Recently, I attended a fundraising event with my husband and I heard a beautiful dynamic speaker by the name of Camille. Don’t tell anyone, but I actually cried while she was talking… By the time she finished speaking, I knew I had to ask her to share her story on my channel. I waited for 2 hours to talk with her and after the crowds had died down, she graciously accepted my offer. Spending time with Camille was like taking a breath of fresh air. Imagine walking into someones home for an interview and a bubbly 60 year old greets you with tons of energy, gorgeous hair and a wholesome outlook and love for life. This is who Camlile is, just a loving bundle of joy - I left her house inspired and grateful. I hope you feel the same way after listening to her story. Camille was given one of the worst diagnosis… Had I been reading her chart, I unfortunately would have not spent too much time with it… I have never met anyone that survived Pancreatic Cancer, much less; Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer with metastasis aka METS. The first doctor she went to told her that she that with stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer with spots on in her lungs, liver and kidneys; there was nothing they could do and she was to go home and prepare to die. However, one thing that she strongly recommends is to get a second opinion, which is what she did. She went to University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer center. She found a doctor that believed in her and she trusted him. She will be the first to tell you that her story is not the norm and oftentimes told me how it hurts her to know that many others have had the same diagnosis and not the same outcome. However, her main focus is to share that no matter how bad things seem, you can always and MUST always have hope. Thankfully Camille is not alone these days. Thanks to advanced research and better treatment options. The bike ride event that Camille and I speak about in the video is a Fundraising event. Events like these help organizations raise money to continue research and be positioned to deliver specialized treatment options. Each persons cancer is different and events like these help us do a small part to help ensure much needed progress. I hope you decide to join us. Please read bike ride information below and email me with any questions: Caroline@EmpoweRN.com See you soon! xoxo ~Caroline Fundraising Bike Ride Information: Please join Camille and I February , 11th 2017 for the fundraising bike ride. If you click on the link below scroll down to a button that says “Join My Team.” After you click on the button, you will be taken to another page that gives you multiple options on different fundraising activities. Camille and I will be doing the 14 mile bike ride. Don’t worry, it is not a race and as long as you have a decent bike you probably do not have to prepare much for it. At least I didn’t lol. The minimum fundraising donation for the bike ride is $250 - however you can reserve your spot for $150 and raise the rest later if you would like. All proceeds will be donated to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer which is South Florida's leader in cancer diagnosis and provides state-of-the-art treatment as well as follow-up care. They also have an advanced research department, which is vital to discovering better treatment options, which in turn will help us save lives. Here is what I did: I purchased the $150 bike ride fee. Then, I purchased two of the $50 Counting Crows concert tickets. I went last year and it was a lot of fun, so I think it is worth the money anyways. Then, just to start my page I paid an additional $10, this is not necessary though. Since I did this last year I know how much fun it is going to be, so I hope you decide to join Camille and I! https://fundraisers.hakuapp.com/teams/team-hurricanes-hurricane-camille By the way, if you only want to donate… every single dollar helps! No donation is too small. Thank you for watching and thank you Camille for sharing your beautiful energy and message of hope to us all. Happy Holidays, ~Caroline

4 Treatments For Pancreatic Cancer

05:16
4 Treatments For Pancreatic Cancer Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer. It starts off in the pancreas which is located behind the stomach. Pancreas produces digestive fluids and insulin for our body, which helps with digestion and sugar metabolism. Since pancreatic cancer is hard to diagnose at an early stage, it often progresses to the extent where it affects other body parts. If the cancer cells grow too large, they can even restrict the ducts from functioning. Choosing The Right Treatment. The treatment of pancreatic cancer depends upon how far the cancer has spread, its location, stage and type. Doctors determine the treatment based on the imaging studies, state of wellbeing of the affected person and surgical findings including the patient’s age. The stage of the cancer is determined by how widely the cancer has spread and how advance is the stage. Determining the stage of cancer is little difficult in pancreatic cancer. Though CT scan and ultrasound helps in providing some information, but determining how far the cancer has spread often requires surgery. Pancreatic cancer is very difficult to treat. Often the cancer is not diagnosed until it has reached an advanced stage. And at the advanced stage, it becomes very difficult to cure. As with other cancers, the early detection makes its easier to treat and cure. Treatment Goal. The focus of treatment of pancreatic cancer remains on eliminating the entire cancer. But since the disease is rarely caught at an early stage, this is not usually the right option. The next choice for the medical professionals now becomes to make an attempt to restrict the tumor in the pancreas from growing in size and from spreading to other parts of the body. If this line of treatment is not successful, then the doctors aim at providing relief to the patient from the symptoms and make the patient as comfortable as possible. =============== Thank you for watching the video! Charlotte Rae shares her experience with pancreatic cancer

03:45
Chalotte Rae, familiar to millions of TV viewers as the housemother on the '80s sitcom The Facts of Life, was diagnosed in 2009 with pancreatic cancer, an often-silent killer with few if any symptoms until it is too late. Some 40,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer are diagnosed each year, and by the time diagnosis is made, up to 80 percent of patients are no longer candidates for treatment. "I had no symptoms," Rae says. "I had absolutely no symptoms. None whatsoever." But Rae was, in a way, lucky. Because she had a family history of the disease - her mother, uncle and older sister all died from the disease - she underwent early screening, which detected the cancer at an early stage. "We're working hard to develop tests for earlier diagnosis," says Howard Reber, M.D., director of the UCLA Pancreatic Cancer Program. The goal is to create something similar to the PSA test now done to detect prostate cancer in its early stages, before it has had a chance to spread. "In patients where we know that there's an increased likelihood of the development of the disease, we can screen them, we can get CT scans, we can get endoscopic ultrasounds," Dr. Reber says. In Rae's case, the cancer was detected and found to be contained, but it was growing fast. Surgery was performed to remove the cancer, and now, following surgery and chemotherapy, Rae is cancer free. Pancreatic Cancer Trial : Early Surgery Boosts Success Rates

03:56
Pancreatic Cancer Trial: Early Surgery Boosts Success Rates. Speeding up access to surgery for pancreatic cancer patients diagnosed early enough increased success rates by a third, a pilot scheme has shown. The Birmingham team said it had saved the NHS £3,200 per patient and could help hundreds of patients UK-wide. The trial involved cutting average time to surgery for 32 patients from two months to just over two weeks - 31 had their tumours removed successfully. But it will be two years before doctors know if operating earlier extends life. About 9,600 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the UK each year, and fewer than 7% live beyond five years. Very little progress has been made in treating the disease since the early 1970s. Currently, just 8% of pancreatic cancer patients in the UK have surgery to successfully remove their tumour, because the majority are diagnosed at an advanced stage, when surgery is not an option. Even if a patient is eligible for surgery, the chances of that surgery being a success are linked to how quickly it takes place. The team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, led by pancreatic surgeon Keith Roberts, worked with hospitals to speed up referrals for patients and reorganised the way surgery was carried out.

8 Surprising Early Warning Signs Of Pancreatic Cancer You Should Never Ignore

04:33
Sign 1: Unexpected Diabetes Diagnosis. Diabetes is a disease where the body doesn’t produce enough insulin and stops being able to regulate blood sugar. It’s a common illness that comes in many different forms, but an abrupt diagnosis as an adult might be a sign of the first stages of pancreatic cancer. Since a problem in the pancreas might cause insulin issues, you should ask your doctor to rule out pancreatic cancer if you get an unexpected diabetes diagnosis. Sign 2: Itchy Hands And Feet. “Even a small pancreatic tumor can block the bile duct,” according to Caring.com. If the duct is blocked, bile starts to build up in the body. When there’s too much bile in the blood, it starts to create compounds in the blood that can’t be broken down. These compounds accumulate in the hands and feet, which might make your palms and the soles of the feet persistently itchy. Sign 3: Yellowing Eyes. The buildup of bile in the blood stream is also called jaundice. This causes a lot of other symptoms beyond itchy palms and feet. Bile has a bright yellow pigment, and it can show up in the whites of the eyes. This is another sign that a blockage, such as a small pancreatic tumor, might be developing in the pancreas. Sign 4: Gnawing Pain In Belly. Abdominal pain is a common symptom with a lot of different causes. Pain that radiates out from the pancreas is often described as “gnawing,” a bit like a hunger pain. People who have had pancreatic cancer also report that the pain tends to go away when they lean forward. Sign 5: Strange Stools. Your poop might provide one of the earliest clues to a problem developing in the pancreas. If bile isn’t being processed properly, your bowel movements won’t be their normal brown color. Instead, they’ll look pale and clay-colored, which is a symptom you always want to bring to your doctor. Sign 6: Sudden Weight Lost. Weight loss is welcome if you’re trying to work off those last 10 pounds, but it can be an alarming red flag if you aren’t trying to drop any weight at all. If a pancreatic tumor is developing, it may prevent your body from digesting food thoroughly. That means that fat and sugar might pass right through your system without sticking, though essential nutrients also aren’t making it into your body. Sign 7: Cravings Disappear. If you have always craved chocolate or cheese, and then suddenly lose your taste for them, you should pay close attention. If your pancreas stops producing the regular digestive enzymes, it might also change your appetite. In addition to feeling nauseated, you might find that specific foods you used to crave no longer taste nearly as delicious. Sign 8: No Appetite. Pancreatic cancer doesn’t just cause cravings to disappear, it might make your whole appetite go up in smoke too. You might feel hungry, then find that you’r completely full after just a bite or two. That’s because the lack of digestive enzymes can shut down your whole system and confuse your stomach. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important that you get in touch with your doctor right away. This is especially true if you’re experiencing multiple symptoms all at once, since every early warning sign might help your doctor find a diagnosis. Chemo, radiation, surgery combo boosts survival for pancreatic cancer patients with veins involved

In roughly one-third of pancreatic cancer patients, tumors have grown around the pancreas to encompass critical blood vessels. Conventional wisdom has long held that surgery to remove the tumors is rarely an option, and life expectancies are usually measured in months. Mayo Clinic, teaming oncologists, gastrointestinal and vascular surgeons and others, is finding that many of these patients actually are candidates for surgery. Mayo has been fine-tuning a protocol to treat them, and in two studies, found survival now stretching into years. The findings were presented at the Pancreas Club and Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract annual meetings in San Diego. For more information, see the Mayo Clinic News Network.

10 Early Warning Signs and Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer You Shoud Know

07:56
10 Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer 1. Diabetes, especially if it comes on suddenly. 2. Yellowing of the eyes or skin. Even a small pancreatic tumor can block the bile duct in the head of the pancreas, causing bile to build up. This causes jaundice. 3. Itchy skin, palms, and soles of feet. A little-known side-effect of jaundice is itchy hands and feet. It's due to a skin reaction to the bilirubin, the yellowish brown liver chemical that causes jaundice. 4. Lack of appetite. An Italian study found that six to eight months before being diagnosed with pancreatic tumors, patients reported a sudden drop in their appetite and a tendency to feel full after eating very little. 5. Changes in taste. In the same Italian study, some of the patients surveyed said they'd suddenly lost their taste for coffee, wine, and smoking. In fact, they said, they felt "disgust" for the smell and taste of coffee and alcohol. 6. Abdominal pain. Pancreatic cancer sufferers remember this pain as a gnawing pain, rather than a sharp cramp or ache, and it radiates toward the back. A characteristic clue: the pain goes away when you lean forward. 7. 8. 9. Dark, tarry stools. Bleeding in the upper intestines causes this symptom.

While health experts say pancreatic cancer is uncommon, there are 52,000 new cases diagnosed each year. It’s the third most common cause of cancer related deaths. But how it’s caused is a question medical experts are still trying to answer. Dr. Mark Bloomston, a surgical oncologist on staff at Lee Memorial Health System, says pancreatic cancer is difficult to diagnose. “If we could figure out what’s causing pancreatic cancer then maybe we could make some moves to prevent it. “ He says there are certain risk factors that have been identified like family history, smoking, obesity, diabetes, and an unhealthy lifestyle. “It doesn’t seem to select a race, age, or gender, which is kind of the difficult thing about it because you can’t pick out a population that’s at the highest risk.” Some patients will experience symptoms like weight loss, jaundice, chronic inflammation of the pancreas, and abdominal pain. “Unfortunately, about 90 percent of them, by the time they’ve realized they have the cancer it has already spread and surgery is not an option,” said Dr. Bloomston. But he says if it’s caught in time, the only treatment is surgery to remove the pancreas. “You can actually live without your pancreas. So you can remove the entirety of the pancreas, we prefer not to because it does instantly cause diabetes.” For those at a higher risk, health experts recommend screening using an endoscopic ultrasound. If the tumor is found in time chemo therapy can be used instead of surgery. “Wer’re finally seeing in the last few years chemo therapy that’s starting to work, not to cure it, not to get rid of it, but we are seeing tumors start to shrink, stabilize and become removable.” Giving patients a better chance. 5 Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer

04:20
5 Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer Although pancreatic cancer can be treated if caught early, the signs are often subtle, and the disease is usually missed until it is in later, more serious stages. But there are some warning signs that you can watch out for. The pancreas has two main jobs in the body: to make juices that help digest food and to make hormones, such as insulin and glucagon, that help control blood sugar levels. The digestive juices are made by exocrine pancreas cells, which is where about 95 percent of pancreatic cancers begin. The disease accounts for approximately 3 percent of all cancers and about 7 percent of all cancer deaths, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS), and the risk goes up with age. About two-thirds of patients are at least 65 years old, and the average age at the time of diagnosis is 71, according to the ACS. Jaundice: This yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes is caused by the buildup of bilirubin, a dark yellow-brown substance made by the liver. Cancers starting in the head of the pancreas are near the common bile duct, according to the ACS. This type of cancer may press on the duct and cause jaundice, which could lead to finding the tumors at an early stage. But cancers that start in the body or tail of the pancreas don't press on the duct until after they have already spread through the pancreas and possibly beyond. Dark urine, too, can be a sign of jaundice, and bilirubin buildup can also lead to itchiness on the skin. Light-colored or greasy stools: Bilirubin helps give stools their brown color, so when the bile duct is blocked, stools may be gray or pale. Pancreatic cancer can also make it difficult for the intestines to help break down fats, so stools may become greasy and float in the toilet. Belly pain: Pain in the abdomen (belly) or back is common with pancreatic cancer. "Cancers that start in the body or tail of the pancreas can grow fairly large and start to press on other nearby organs, causing pain," the ACS says. "The cancer may also spread to the nerves surrounding the pancreas, which often causes back pain. Of course, pain in the abdomen or back is fairly common and is most often caused by something other than pancreatic cancer." Loss of appetite and weight loss: Unintended weight loss and loss of appetite can be warning signs of pancreatic cancer. Nausea and vomiting: The cancer can press on the far end of the stomach and partially block it, making it hard for food to pass. This may cause nausea, vomiting and pain after eating. A more detailed list of symptoms is available from ACS. Prevention While some risk factors for pancreatic cancer cannot be controlled, such as age or genetics, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk. Stop smoking. About 20 percent to 30 percent of pancreatic cancers are thought to be caused by cigarette smoking; smokeless tobacco products are also a factor. Lose weight. Very overweight people are about 20 percent more likely to develop pancreatic cancer, and carrying extra weight around the waistline may be a risk factor even for those who aren't that overweight. Limit exposure to certain chemicals. Heavy and repeated exposure to certain chemicals in the workplace, such as those used in dry cleaning and metalworking, may raise a person’s risk of pancreatic cancer. 10 Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer

03:19
10 Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer The average general health article on pancreatic cancer states flatly that this type of cancer shows no early symptoms. Most people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer are already in the advanced stage of the disease by the time it's caught, and the typical prognosis is death within five years. Only 4 percent of pancreatic cancer patients live beyond five years. In recent years, pancreatic cancer has claimed the lives of numerous celebrities and public figures, including Steve Jobs, actor Patrick Swayze, and actress Bonnie Franklin, leading many people to ask the key question, "Are there any early warning signs of pancreatic cancer?" The answer is yes, there are. But to understand these signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer, it's important to understand where the pancreas is, and what it does. Located deep inside the abdomen, the pancreas is only 4 to 6 inches long and shaped like a tadpole. In the "tail" of the pancreas are cells that produce insulin, and tumors at this end are usually endocrine tumors. They're easier to diagnose, but are much rarer. At the other end, the "head" of the pancreas, are cells that produce digestive enzymes, and tumors at this end are called exocrine tumors. These are by far the most common, and are much more difficult to detect. However, the idea that a pancreatic tumor is asymptomatic is a bit of a myth. Dig deep into journal articles and ask patients what they remember and the result is a long list of odd signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer to watch out for. Taken one by one, these symptoms could mean many things. But if you find yourself experiencing two or three of these early warning signs of pancreatic cancer, call your doctor and ask for a scan. Imaging techniques such as MRIs can detect pancreatic cancer some of the time, depending on the location of the tumor.

Pancreatic Cancer: Deadly and Under- Researched

02:15
Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of the disease. It is also one of the least researched. The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network estimates nearly 50,000 Americans will be diagnosed this year and 40, 000 will die from it. Kimberly Heaney is happy to watch her 10-year-old son, practice riding his BMX bike. His birthday two years ago, took a tough turn. Heaney says, " I received my first diagnosis on Elijah's 8th birthday. So I told my surgeon he is 8 and I am not finished. So let's do what we need to do." With pancreatic cancer, the mother of three went through several rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, surgeries and more could be in her future. She is also managing well with a change in diet and undergoing a clinical trial.. Heaney says, "It is the least researched out of all the cancers especially with the survival rate. It's five percent for five years. So more money , more research. early detection. If this works, then it will work for the next person and the next person which is great." " Sarah Cannon Research Institute is leading the therapy trial. Director of drug development, Dr. Jeffery Infante says, the five year survival rate is low even if caught early enough. Dr. Jeffrey Infante says, "Unlike breast cancer where you can feel a mass on your breast, and diagnose it early The pancreas sits on the inside of the body and by the time it is diagnosed, the majority of patients its already spread to other organs." Symptoms are also rare... Heaney says, " I had some very mild discomfort in my right side, and that's what sent me to the doctor. ." Her husband, Tim Heaney says, "Super optimistic and she's not going anywhere. All we can do is try to create more awareness to get more funding." Only about 2 % of the National Cancer Institutes budget goes to pancreatic cancer. Kimberly Heaney says, :" if you don't have hope, then you will die." Heaney is running in the PurpleStride Nashville 5k this weekend. Breaking News - Liverpool mother diagnosed with pancreatic cancer

05:43
A 28-year-old mother who endured agonising stomach pains weeks after giving birth was diagnosed with 'the worst form of cancer'.Amy Blacklock, of Kirkby, Liverpool, was told she had pancreatic cancer, which kills 90 per cent of patients within five years. Her 'whole world fell apart' when doctors gave her the shock news just weeks after she gave birth to Annabelle, her second child. She feared she wouldn't see her children grow up, saying she faced her mortality at 28, and used them and her partner as motivation to spur her on in her battle against the killer disease. The journalist, now in remission following chemotherapy and two operations, has spoken of her ordeal for the first time since she was diagnosed last January. She told the Liverpool Echo: 'I was feeding Annabelle at 5am in the morning, and was vomiting with really bad pains in my abdomen - worse than childbirth.'Ms Blacklock, who also has a son called Jack, revealed she struggled to breathe as she was rushed to intensive care in hospital and was put on morphine. After being allowed home, the pains returned five weeks later and her skin began to turn yellow, both of which are signs of pancreatic cancer.Tests showed a growth on her pancreas, which doctors originally assumed was a cyst. The 7cm x 5cm lump turned out to be a cancerous tumour.Ms Blacklock told the newspaper: 'I had a sense it might be cancer, but I felt like my whole world would fell apart when I found out.'I kept looking at my children, thinking - am I going to be here to see them grow up?'Nothing matters apart from getting through it, you start only caring about your kids, family and life.'I saw the diagnosis on the notes the doctor had left by my bed before they came in to tell me. There’s no good way to find out, but that wasn’t the best way to hear it.'Ms Blacklock, who wore a wig as her 'safety blanket', described her diagnosis as 'the worst form of cancer you can get'.Symptoms are often vague in the early stages, leaving many to only seek medical advice when they have back pain or unexpectedly lose weight. If the cancer is caught early enough for surgery, up to a quarter people will live for five years or more. But if it has spread to nearby tissues, many don't make it past the six-month mark, figures suggest. In its most advanced stages, when the cancer has spread to another organ or part of the body, survival is as low as two to six months.Ms Blacklock, who is set to return to work in the coming weeks, added: 'It’s really bizarre to face your mortality at 28. But I was lucky it hadn’t spread despite its size.'My kids are the reason I could keep going, and my partner, who has given up work for now to look after me.'Partner Anthony Seddon, 31, proposed to her just before an operation to remove the tumour because he wanted her to know she would come out and get married. The operation, which was a success and helped her to survive her battle, left her with only half a pancreas and no gall bladder. And Ms Blacklock, who has los AutoNews- Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-5390153/Mother-28-diagnosed-worst-form-cancer.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

Liver Cancer Survival Rates

Related: Liver Cancer Early Warning Signs https://youtu.be/muI6Huqv_60 Liver Cancer Stages https://youtu.be/Xivxjd5R-vs Liver Cancer Survival Rates Liver cancer survival rates are estimates that vary based on a number of factors which are specific to each individual patient. Patients are assiged a stage by their doctor that describes how much the cancer has spread beyond the liver. The more the the cancer has spread, the higher the stage and the lower the survival rate. Survival rates for these stages are traditionally given as the percentage of patients who live at least 5 years after their diagnosis. Here are the 5-year survival rates for liver cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute, based on studies done between 2005-2011. 31 Percent For people whose cancer is "localized," that is, has not spread outside the liver, the 5-year survival rate is about one in three. Localized means the cancer is still confined to the liver, and includes stages I, II, and some stage III cancers. This encompasses a wide range of cancers, some of which are easier to treat than others. 11 Percent The 5-year survival rate for "regional" liver cancer is about one in ten. Regional means the cancer has grown into nearby organs or has spread to nearby lymph nodes. This typically happens in stages IIIC and IVA. 3 Percent If liver cancer has spread to other parts of the body, the 5-year survival rate is about 1 in 33. Distant means that the cancer has spread to distant organs or tissues and is the same as stage IVB. The overall 5-year survival is better than 50 percent in patients with "resectable" tumors -- that is, tumors that can be completely removed. These patients are likely to do well if their tumors are removed when they're not suffering from cirrhosis or other serious health problems. At the present time, those who have early-stage liver cancers and get a liver transplant have a 5-year survival rate is in the range of 60% to 70%. Of course, the 5-year survival rate for liver cancer tends to be better if the cancer is found and treated at an earlier stage. The purpose of this video has been to provide quick, basic information on liver cancer survival rates. Pancreatic Cancer and hard-hitting campaign discussed on This Morning

01:44
Following the launch of our hard-hitting campaign, Dr Dawn Harper discusses why we needed to do this. Here is our official statement about the ad: All types of cancer are horrific and no one would wish for themselves or anyone they care about to be affected by this terrible disease. Our hearts go out to anyone who has been affected by it. Over the past 20-30 years we have seen an increased investment in research for many cancers alongside effective awareness campaigns by cancer charities which have helped to make a difference in terms of improved survival for most cancers, but sadly the same cannot be said for pancreatic cancer. As you know, awareness is key to early diagnosis and this is particularly true for pancreatic cancer. In our case, despite the best efforts of ourselves and other pancreatic cancer organisations, for 40 years, pancreatic cancer patients in the UK have faced the same grim prognosis -- only a three per cent chance of survival and an average life expectancy of less than six months. The only thing that has changed is that funding into research has fallen. Even though it's UK's fifth biggest cancer killer, it received under 1% of cancer research funding in 2012. With no early detection test available, the key to changing the numbers relies on shouting really loud about the disease and its symptoms to raise awareness with the public. Ultimately, we want more people to be diagnosed earlier and in time for surgery, which is currently the only potential cure. Early diagnosis is crucial as, for those diagnosed in time for surgery to remove the tumour, their chance of surviving five years increases ten-fold. While no-one would ever wish to have cancer, if faced with the dark reality of a pancreatic cancer diagnosis, many patients, while sat in a doctor's room, might wish, even just for a second, to have another cancer and be faced with a better chance of survival.

HEADLINE: Ginsburg has pancreatic cancer CAPTION: The Supreme Court says Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had surgery Thursday after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. (Feb. 5) [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] [Notes:all file video] Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has undergone surgery for pancreatic cancer. Officials say the 75-year-old jurist will spend the next week to ten days at a cancer center in New York. The court says the tumor was found during a routine physical last month. It says the cancer is in its early stages and that the tumor was about a centimeter across. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly cancers with fewer than 5 percent of people surviving for five years. However doctors say that's mainly because the cancer isn't typically caught early enough, like it appears Ginsburg's tumor was. This isn't her first brush with cancer. She had surgery for colon cancer ten years ago and underwent chemotherapy and radiation as well. Ginsburg recently said she had no plans to retire any time soon however she made that comment before this latest diagnosis. 4 Proven Pancreatic Cancer Treatments

4 Proven Pancreatic Cancer Treatments. Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer. Choosing The Right Treatment The treatment of pancreatic cancer depends upon how far the cancer has spread, its location, stage and type. Though CT scan and ultrasoundhelps in providing some information, but determining how far the cancer has spread often requires surgery. Pancreatic cancer is very difficult to treat. Often the cancer is not diagnosed until it has reached an advanced stage. And at the advanced stage, it becomes very difficult to cure. As with other cancers, the early detection makes its easier to treat and cure. Treatment Goal The focus of treatment of pancreatic cancer remains on eliminating the entire cancer. 5 Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer

5 Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer
