Is Obamacare Working? The Affordable Care Act Five Years Later
In which John Green pauses, five years after the Affordable Care Act was signed into law, to consider what we know so far about the law's effectiveness and repercussions. I also look at health care in the United States more generally, and the limited scope of the Affordable Care Act relative to the size of the overall health care system in the U.S. I got a ton of help from Aaron Carroll, who hosts the great Health Care Triage https://www.youtube.com/user/thehealthcaretriage, but any errors are my fault and mine alone. Why Are American Health Care Costs So High?
In which John discusses the complicated reasons why the United States spends so much more on health care than any other country in the world, and along the way reveals some surprising information, including that Americans spend more of their tax dollars on public health care than people in Canada, the UK, or Australia. Who's at fault? Insurance companies? Drug companies? Malpractice lawyers? Hospitals? Or is it more complicated than a simple blame game? (Hint: It's that one.) For a much more thorough examination of health care expenses in America, I recommend this series at The Incidental Economist: http://theincidentaleconomist.com/wordpress/what-makes-the-us-health-care-system-so-expensive-introduction/ The Commonwealth Fund's Study of Health Care Prices in the US: http://www.commonwealthfund.org/~/media/Files/Publications/Issue%20Brief/2012/May/1595_Squires_explaining_high_hlt_care_spending_intl_brief.pdf Some of the stats in this video also come from this New York Times story: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/02/health/colonoscopies-explain-why-us-leads-the-world-in-health-expenditures.html?pagewanted=all This is the first part in what will be a periodic series on health care costs and reforms leading up to the introduction of the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, in 2014.

Experts Warn of Security Bugs on Healthcare Website
The website at the center of U.S. President Barack Obama's healthcare overhaul has security flaws that put user data at "critical risk" despite recent government assurances it is safe to use, a respected security expert said on Tuesday. "There are actual, live vulnerabilities on the site now," David Kennedy, head of computer security consulting firm TrustedSec LLC, told Reuters before testifying at a congressional hearing on the topic "Is My Data on HealthCare.gov Secure?" Kennedy, a former U.S. Marine Corps cyber-intelligence analyst, presented a 17-page report describing the problems to the House Science, Space and Technology Committee. It does not go into specifics in some areas, he said, because that could provide criminals with a blueprint for launching attacks. The website is an online exchange that allows consumers to shop for insurance plans under Obama's Affordable Care Act, which mandated that Americans have health insurance and created new marketplaces to buy and sell policies. The site has been bedeviled by technical glitches since its launch on October 1, although Obama administration officials have said they are getting on top of the problems.

Why Is Healthcare So Expensive?
The Affordable Care Act was supposed to lower healthcare costs, but it has done just the opposite. Why? Because it ignored the realities of how markets work. Since the Affordable Care Act passed in 2010 health care costs have gone up by double digits each year. The health care bill did get more people insured and helped with issues like preexisting conditions, but the problem with the healthcare law isn't what it tried to do, it's what it failed to do: reduce costs. The solutions to the cost problem is with the free market and competition. Here are just three ideas that could make a huge difference. Number 1: We can roll back the tax burden on insurance companies. The ACA added a $60 billion tax on health insurers, which made them have to charge more to consumers to cover their costs. Taxes roll downhill so a tax on insurers means higher costs for all of us. Number 2: We can lower the regulations on health plans. The ACA has a lot of requirements that force insurance plans to cover an incredibly big list of benefits. If you want a bare-bones insurance plan that simply covers catastrophic events like a car accident or cancer you currently can't get one. By boosting the benefits of every plan it restricts competition and drives up prices by forcing smaller health insurers out of the marketplace. Low-cost catastrophic plans that are normally purchased by younger, healthier people are no longer available because of the ACA requirements. Introducing as many health insurers to the marketplace as possible can drive down prices by encouraging businesses to compete to cut costs. The ACA did the exact opposite: Less competition and higher prices. Number 3: Encourage medical innovation. The cost to bring a new drug to market already exceeds two and half billion dollars. And the ACA places an additional twenty-two billion dollar tax burden on innovator drug companies, the same businesses that produce lifesaving medications and cures for those in need. Punishing drug producers forces them to charge even higher prices to make up for the lost money in research, development, and taxes. If we encourage, not punish drug makers it will lead to more breakthroughs and lower costs--a win, win for all of us. As healthcare costs skyrocket, don't forget that the free market is our best chance to rein them in.

You might get people to sign up, but you're not going to change the dynamic of losing the health care you enjoy today or going to part-time employment. That won't be fixed by a computer."

Thompson: Even Clinton Wants President Obama to Reform Flawed Health Care Law
Mr. / Madam Speaker, the White House has been under pressure for weeks as millions of Americans have started receiving health insurance cancellation letters, despite repeated assurances from the President this would not be the case. Earlier today, former President Bill Clinton weighed in on the debate. He stated the following and I quote: "I personally believe, even if it takes changing the law, the president should honor the commitment the federal government made to those people and let them keep what they got," end of quote. Last week the President apologized, despite American families continuing to lose their coverage as a result of the Affordable Care Act. Mr. / Madam Speaker, rather than apologize to the millions of Americans who are losing their coverage, the President should fulfill the promise that was made. This week the House will consider H.R. 3350, the "Keep Your Health Plan Act," which will allow insurance companies to continue offering the plans that millions of consumers were happy with and would like to keep. If the President is sincere in keeping his promise, the very least he could do is support this bipartisan legislation. I yield back.

Obamacare: Delivering Affordable Health Care
Watch the health care stories: http://OFA.BO/79Z4B3 Share this: http://OFA.BO/HVJSt4 Tweet this: http://OFA.BO/Tm3vHf I know there will be a lot of discussion today about the politics of all this, about who won and who lost. But that discussion completely misses the point. Whatever the politics, today's decision was a victory for people all over this country whose lives will be more secure because of this law and the Supreme Court's decision to uphold it. If you're one of the more than 250 million Americans who already have health insurance, you will keep your health insurance—this law will only make it more secure and more affordable. Insurance companies can no longer impose lifetime limits on the amount of care you receive. They can no longer discriminate against children with pre-existing conditions. They can no longer drop your coverage if you get sick. They can no longer jack up your premiums without reason. They are required to provide free preventive care like check-ups and mammograms. Young adults under the age of 26 are able to stay on their parent's health care plans. Seniors receive a discount on their prescription drugs. And by this August, nearly 13 million of you will receive a rebate from your insurance company because it spent too much on things like administrative costs and CEO bonuses, and not enough on your health care. All of this is happening because of the Affordable Care Act. Today, I'm as confident as ever that when we look back five years from now, or 10 years from now, or 20 years from now, we'll be better off because we had the courage to pass this law and keep moving forward.

Trump's Newest Attack On Obamacare
Trump is hell-bent on undoing anything President Obama did. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Watch The Young Turks YouTube TV NOW: https://tv.youtube.com/browse/UCcYIW1doY-ArwqFqw8HNj0Q Read more here: https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2018/07/08/trump-administration-freezes-insurance-payments-under-obamacare/766391002/ "The Trump administration's decision to freeze billions in payments to health insurers with plans under Obamacare that cover a higher number of sicker patients could cause health care premiums to rise in 2019. In the latest swipe at the Affordable Care Act, which Trump was unable to repeal in his first year in office, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services on Saturday said it was putting "on hold" its "risk adjustment" program in which it collects money from insurers with fewer high-cost plan members and transfers the funds to insurers with more high-need patients that require more expensive care. The CMS said a February federal court decision in New Mexico, which ruled it was using a flawed formula to determine its collections and payments amounts, prevented it from continuing the program. The CMS, which noted that a federal court in Massachusetts found its formula fair, has asked the New Mexico court to reconsider its decision and said it is seeking a quick resolution to the legal issue."
