Low Carb Vs Low Fat | NIH Weight-Loss Study

A new study published in "Cell Metabolism" conducted by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institute of Health (NIH) found that cutting dietary fat reduces body fat more than cutting carbs. Even though the reduced fat group did not show a significant change in insulin secretion, restricting dietary fat led to body fat loss at a rate 68 percent higher than cutting the same number of carbohydrate calories when adults with obesity ate strictly controlled diets. Improve insulin sensitivity 2. Fight inflammation in the body 3. Protect cardiovascular health 4. Help people lose weight through controlling hunger and appetite All of the above point to how palmitoleic acid helps with metabolic syndrome Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors that raise your chance of diseases such as heart disease, type-2 diabetes and stroke. These risk factors include: 1. Abdominal fat - having a large midsection 2. High triglycerides 3. Low HDL level 4. High blood pressure 5. High blood sugar **Best study** A study published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology in 2014 conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled study of palmitoleic acid supplementation versus a placebo on subjects with systemic inflammation and dyslipidemia for 30 days. The results were impressive! As compared to the control group, the experimental group: ● Reduced C-reactive protein (a marker of inflammation) ● Decreased triglycerides ● Decreased LDL ● Increased HDL 1. Insulin Sensitivity and Type-2 Diabetes and Heart Disease Type-2 diabetes is a cluster of metabolic diseases that results from problems with insulin secretion and/or action. Different fatty acids have been found to have differing effects on glucose and lipid metabolism as well as insulin sensitivity. As a general rule: ● Saturated fats contribute to insulin resistance ● Unsaturated fats counter insulin resistance Palmitoleic acid has been found to: ● Prevent beta-cell apoptosis (cell death of insulin-producing cells) that is caused by glucose and saturated fats ● Improve plasma lipid profile (beneficial for both heart health and diabetes) ○ Human study: One study took mildly hypercholesterolemic men and women and compared a control group with a group that consumed macadamia nuts for 5 weeks. Compared to the control group, the experimental group experienced a reduction of both total and LDL-cholesterol levels. ● Functions as an adipose tissue-derived lipid hormone, stimulating insulin action in muscle cells and suppressing fatty liver disease ○ What this means is that muscle cells use palmitoleic acid to communicate with organs, regulating systemic metabolic homeostasis 2. Inflammation A study looked at 20 participants with ulcerative colitis (UC), a disease marked by inflammation, and had ½ of the subjects take palmitoleic acid and the other half a placebo. This study found that after 8 weeks the palmitoleic acid group experienced decreased inflammatory activity measured by inflammatory markers. 3. Heart Health Studies above showed the ability to raise HDL and lower LDL. Also supports proper endothelial function. 4. Weight Loss/Appetite A 2013 study on rats found that consuming palmitoleic acid, as compared to other kinds of fats and a control, led to decreased food intake. This information has been quoted for decades now and originally it came from a study at a nutrition clinic at New York Hospital in the 1950's. To study had a lot of flaws but it somehow became a fact. The fact is, researchers don't have the exact percentage of people who end up regaining. Looking further into this, a 2014 study (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24355667) of nearly 3000 people who had lost (and kept off) a minimum of 30 pounds for at least 1 year found that 87 percent of participants maintained at least 10 percent of that weight loss over a decade. So how do you set yourself up for successful long-term weight loss maintenance? One of the biggest mistakes I see with dieters who aim to lose 30, 40, 50 or more pounds is trying to lose it all at once and trying to lose it fast. When you attempt a big change to your homeostatic balance such as rapidly changing body weight your body starts to fight back. With body weight, by now we know that there's something call the body fat settling point which essentially means that your body has a point to which it will try to bring you back. And if you try to go far below that set point very fast, using an aggressive calorie-restricted diet, you will experience a strong pull to regain until you get back to the initial weight. Some of the adaptations include: Slowing down of metabolism Reducing of non-exercise activity - More slouching, less walking, unconsciously you're moving less, leaning more on objective More hunger and less satiety Neither of those are favorable if we're looking to lose weight and keep it off. In a nutshell, your body thinks it's starving despite the fact that there's plenty of body fat to go around. Obesity researchers hypothesize that this due to leptin resistance. Leptin is a hormone with a number of functions, one of those is signaling your brain how much body fat you currently have. The simple strategy to minimize these adaptations is to NOT lose weight in one go. Instead, lose 5% of body weight in one go and then maintain the new weight for at least half of the time it took you to lose the weight. This "diet break" phase will allow your body to get used to the new weight and make it your new "default". And by taking your time you're also becoming more skilled with the healthy behaviors and habits such as regular exercise, consuming mainly whole unprocessed foods, getting plenty of sleep, preparing your food, shopping for the right foods etc.. All of these are all skills that take practice and time to become a part of your lifestyle. When you take the slower approach you're avoiding the hardest part of the diet which comes after 10-12 weeks. So by taking a break every 8 - 10 weeks for 4-5 weeks you get a chance to stay at the new weight, get used to it and it becomes the new normal. This strategy is very powerful, it's not a magical pill solution to weight loss but it works. It works in the long run which is most important. Now, the question is, are you willing to commit for the long run and get this handled? If so, then let's be smart about it and get out of the "magic pill" mentality. And the majority of people gain back most of the weight back and even more. (http://annals.org/article.aspx?articleid=718051) Something is clearly wrong with the way we try to lose weight. The logical question to ask ourselves is: Why do most diets fail in the long run? It's quite simple. People start to eat more. But why do people start eating more? Again, it's simple. People just get too hungry, and they can't restrain themselves anymore. Research has found that not being hungry is the most significant predictor of successful weight loss. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23512619?dopt=Abstract&holding=npg It wasn't how much will-power you have, or how well you tracked your diet or how hard you exercise. It's coming down to how well you deal with hunger. Imagine if we weren't hungry when we ate less. Losing weight would be effortless. The reality is, the leaner you get, the hungrier you become. In the good old days that hunger signal would get us moving and hunting, so you don't starve. And we had to spend a decent amount of calories before getting food. However, now takes less than 10 kcal to call in food delivery and get 2000 kcal delivered to your doorstep in less than 30 minutes. And if it's a bit late, you probably get it for free. Or you get more food an apology or a reward for your "patience." If you're like me, you might be thinking right now. "I can resist hunger; I'm not an animal." But can you? If we look at the short-term, then we can control ourselves, but over time the self-control "muscle" gets fatigued. Science is pretty clear on this; self-control is a limited resource. Over time as we lose weight we get more hungry (and more stressed) which eventually overpowers the amount of self-control we have for higher-level decision-making. So the key to successful weight loss is to master the skill of feeling less hungry. How do we do that? Here are five hunger management skills to master. 1 - You eat more food but fewer calories. When your diet is 90% made out of healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables you'll find that you get to eat an enormous amount of food in a day and still lose weight. Get a standing desk, take the stairs, walk to the gym/work, park your car a bit further so you can walk. What are the consequences of losing weight without exercise? Now, as you've probably heard, most people say weight loss is simple. All you have to do is eat less and move more. While that's partially true, there's a right and a wrong way to lose weight. Now, let's make something clear. Often people will confuse overall weight loss with fat loss. And these two are by no means the same thing. I know, it feels great to see the scale weight go down, but if you're interested in health improvements and a great looking body you have to focus on improving your body composition. In the real world, this means less fat mass and more muscle mass. And if we look at what most people are doing following fat diets they end up losing both fat mass and muscle mass which very often leads to weight regain. Sadly, that's what happens to most people. They end up losing and re-gaining the same 10-15 lbs every year. And every time they regain the weight back the gain a bit more. To be fair, most popular ways to lose weight are terrible. For the vast majority of the general population, weight loss means very restrictive diets, juice cleanses, detoxes, very little to no exercise, low protein intake and all kinds of nonsense. One big part of this is that people fall for BS marketing and keeping look for a magic pill solution and a shortcut. And it's rare to see someone commit to a real lifestyle change. Anyways, without going too much into a rant, I got a study that I wanted to share with you guys that presented a new hypothesis when it comes to weight regain. And it seems that the reduction in lean body mass (losing muscle mass) may drive excess fat independently of losing fat mass which we knew from previous research. Now, going back to the research. I remember Lyle McDonald mentioned a few months ago that in the famous Minnesota study the men didn't stop gaining fat until they had regained all their LBM. So not only did someone of them regain the weight they've lost but even more. It looks like their bodies not only wanted to gain weight until they regain the lost fat mass but also until they restored the lost lean muscle mass. In a practical sense, this means we must minimize loss of muscle mass and focus on regaining lost muscle mass as soon as possible after a period of weight loss. There are three keys to preventing muscle loss and regaining lost muscle mass after a diet are: - Progressive resistance training - Sufficient protein intake (0.9 - 1.4 grams per lbs of lean body mass per day of protein) - Sufficient amount of sleep for recovery. We know from looking at the research that sleep deprivation can promote muscle loss. I'm going to give you an unbiased review, and I'm going to look at different things. I'm not just going to look at the cholesterol side of things, I want to look at omega profiles, I want to look at sulfur, I want to look at glutathione. I want to talk about the egg diet in a different light, and help you understand truly what it is. This is completely unbiased. I don't do the egg diet. Anyhow, if you don't follow me already, my name's Thomas DeLauer. Go ahead and hit that subscribe button if you want to get three to five awesome nutrition and workout coaching videos per week. If you are already a follower, make sure you turn on those notifications so you never miss a video. All right, so first off, what the heck is the egg diet? I'll give you my first off honest impression of the egg diet. It's something that's been sort of manufactured to piggy-back off of the keto diet. People are seeing that the keto diet is successful, and that it's getting popular, so people are starting to make different spinoffs with the same general underlying principles. Ultimately, the egg diet is more of a mono-diet. It's where you really focus on eggs as your primary source of fuel, if not your only source of fuel. Some people eating upwards of two dozen eggs per day, you can pretty darn aggressive. The whole idea here is that eggs supposedly have the abundant nutrient profile that you need to survive, and the perfect ratio of fats to protein. Some of that I'm not going to argue with, okay? If you have really truly good quality eggs, you can get a nice nutrient profile from them, and sure, the fat to protein ratio is quite nice, and supports a general ketogenic lifestyle, but there's some other things that we really have to look at. First off, it's never good to get your food from just one source. What's going to happen is your body's ultimately going to start to develop antibodies to it, and it's going to happen very fast. As we start to consume something over, and over, and over again, our bodies do start to create antibodies to it. It does start to create a reaction, basing specific IGE, and IGG responses within the body. These IGG responses make it so that your body signals an immune attack whenever you're eating this food in the future. This is the same kind of thing that happens with gluten intolerance. For example, back in the 1950s, we didn't have much of an issue with gluten, believe it or not. Nowadays, we have an issue with gluten. It's not so much that gluten has changed a whole lot, it's more so that we have over consumed wheat to the point where we're developing antibodies to it. Well this happens at a smaller scale, very aggressively, and very fast if you consume the same food, especially only that food. But let's talk about something different. I want to talk more so about the omega profile, omega-3s versus omega-6s. Eggs are generally about 1% omega-3, and over 14% omega-6. Now you might here the word omega and automatically think that it's a good thing, but here's the thing, omega-6s are not good in high amounts, not good at all. In fact, very, very detrimental, so much so that there are multiple studies that link omega-6s with inflammation, and terrible conditions within the body. What's the problem, why can't we just modulate that omega-6 with something else? Well, here's the thing, we need to be in equal balance of omega-3, and omega-6s. If we're consistently consuming a food that is higher in omega-6s, than the omega-3s, it's skewing that balance in our body. What exactly happens with omega-6s then? Omega-6s are what are called a pro-inflammatory fat. It is literally their job to signal inflammation at specific periods of time. Omega-6s help support the immune system. However, after the initial big drop it's recommended to take a diet break to maintain your weight after which you would aim to lose between 0,5 - 1,5% of BW / week. - Resistance training is critical for increasing muscle mass and for efficient weight loss. - In a situation where you have a lot of body fat to lose you can build a decent amount of muscle while lose fat even in a big calorie deficit. This is possible because your body can release the energy stored in your fat cells to compensate for the caloric deficit from the diet. - It's a good idea to have regular diet breaks when you have a lot of weight to lose. Research shows that deliberately taking a break from the diet for the body to get used to the new weight will not only help you lose more weight in the future but you'll most likely lose the same amount of weight as if you've continued dieting with less stress. - As you get leaner it's normal for the weight loss to slow down a bit as there's less body fat to release. - People who stick with an exercise plan (resistance training with cardio) tend to maintain the weight lost. Otherwise it's not uncommon to see a "yo-yo" effect among dieters who lose a lot of weight (Biggest Loser show example). Some people will re-gain up to 200 lbs when the lifestyle factors and exercise are neglected. - It's recommended to use tools like MyFitnessPal for a few weeks to figure out your portion sizes and learn how to control your calorie intake. (You don't have to do this throughout the whole diet, but intermittently tracking to make sure you know how many calories you should eat to keep losing weight is very helpful.) - Aside from portion control, by using food logs you can also learn the macronutrient content of each food (protein, carbohydrate, fat) which will allow you to view food for what type of nutrition it gives you instead of "bad" or "good" foods. - Ultimately there is no single "best" diet for everyone. - Create a calorie deficit. - Keep protein intake at aprox. 1g per lbs of ideal body-weight - Focus on nutrient-dense foods - Experiment with different ratios of carbohydrate to fats. - Include a variety of fruits and vegetables - Make sure you can stick to the eating plan.
