Mercy Health Partners • 2011 Pink Ribbon Celebration • Knoxville, TN
On Thursday, October 20, 2011, Mercy Breast Centers are having their 3rd Annual "Pink Ribbon Celebration"....sponsored by B-97.5 & WBIR-TV. This evening is a celebration for breast cancer survivors. This will be held at The Knoxville Convention Center. Our theme is "Reason for Celebration". We will have music, food and entertainment. Each table will be decorated uniquely representing different occasions we celebrate throughout our lives. Over the past two years, we have been honored to have as our entertainers for this event, comedians, Leanne Morgan and Henry Cho, recording artist, Jordan Hill, and breast cancer survivor & nationally known speaker, Barbara Dooley. This year we have secured recording artist, Candy Coburn - (performing her Pink Warrior Anthem) - and Margo Rey - survivor and singer who will be performing her new song "Let the Rain" written with John Oates of Hall & Oates!!! We are also excited to announce a very special guest speaker...Breast Cancer Survivor, Lady Vol, former WNBA player and Olympic Bronze Medalist...Daedra Charles-Furlow!!! We will also have a silent auction. Some of the items that we will have for auction are: - 24 passes from Regal Cinemas - A golf package from the Beaver Brook CC 9-Hole Ladies Group - A Dinner Cruise for 2 from the Tennessee Riverboat Company - A candle/lotion basket from Aundrea Heath of Sweet Soy Scents - Gift basket with a massage, Lymphedema Care Givers Guide book ~ co author, one of their PT's~ and other goodies from Marino Therapy Centers - A hand-stamped personalized breast cancer necklace from Keefer Style Creations - A Birthday Party from Premiere Athletics ...& MANY MORE!!!! Each year this celebration has grown in attendance. Last year, over 500 people came and enjoyed an exciting, fun evening. We anticipate even more participation this year, as word has spread about the event. Our goal for this event is twofold. First, we want to honor our survivors. At the same time, we want to raise money for our Compassion In Action fund. We began this fund in 2009 to help uninsured and underinsured women receive breast imaging. We have paid for mammograms, breast ultrasound, breast biopsies and breast MRI. We also help cancer patients who are in financial need. We have paid house payments, utilities, cancer medications, etc. The Pink Ribbon Celebration alone has raised nearly 20,000 dollars for this fund.

Mercy Health Report - November 2010 - Peripheral Artery Disease
The incidence of Peripheral Artery Disease or PAD has surpassed cancer and stroke in Americans and Mercy is leading the way in treatment. PAD is best described as blocked arteries to the legs, much like the heart. It causes severe pain in the legs says vascular surgeon Dr. George Pliagas. The blockages can lead to infection, gangrene and possible amputation. Mercy has a dedicated room for advanced procedures to restore blood flow. Unfortunately, many patients with PAD go undiagnosed. That's why any symptoms should be evaluated.

Limiting Liberty: The Recurring Collision of Free Speech and Religion
https://diversity.umn.edu/criticalconversations Since 1791, when the First Amendment to the US Constitution was adopted, the free exercise of religion and the protection of free speech, press, and assembly, have been enshrined as deeply held American values. Yet free speech and religion have historically, and recently, sometimes been at odds. These conflicts have occasionally resulted in vitriol and even violence, as witnessed in the January 2015 murders of journalists, editors, and cartoonists at the Charlie Hebdo publication in Paris. Web connectivity and the 24-hour news cycle have enabled nearly immediate transmission of news, and sometimes, nearly immediate social unrest. Recently, religious freedom legislation claiming to protect religious belief and practice has emerged in several state legislatures across the country. Through the lenses of Constitutional law, journalism and communications, cultural practice, and public security, this conversation examines the rights and limitations of free speech - and the rights and limitations of holding and practicing personal beliefs. Panelists: Suda Ishida, Professor, Communication Studies and Director, International Journalism Program, Hamline University; Heidi Kitrosser, Professor, University of Minnesota Law School whose specialization includes Constitutional Law; Steve Sack, Editorial Cartoonist, Minneapolis Star Tribune; Fadwa Wazwaz, Editor-in-Chief, Engage Minnesota, a media voice for Minnesota Muslims. Moderator: Kimberly Hewitt, Director, Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action, Office for Equity & Diversity.
