Coming in at # 10 on our list of ultralight aircraft that give you the biggest bang for your buck is the Legal Eagle. The Legal Eagle which was designed by Leonard Milholland is single seat, high wing, ultralight aircraft first introduced to the U.S. market at Sun N Fun in 1998. The name Legal Eagle came about when Leonard weighted the plane and it came in at 10 lbs less than the 254 lbs weight limit for the U.S. - thus "this Eagle is legal became the "LEGAL EAGLE." The plane features a welded fuselage with an all wood wing, similar to that of a Mini Max, the tail section is aluminums tube using pop rivets and gussets. Controls are standard stick and rudder, with ailerons. The plane is powered by a "better half" VW engine. The plane cruises along at 53 mph, stalls at 19, and according to Leonard is "real responsive and a pleasure to fly." All of the control systems are located outside the fuselage and the wings are completely sealed to prevent "those creepy crawly things" from getting in. "The whole idea of this plane is to be economical - you can afford it if you want to do the work." The plans consist of a cover sheet with the specifications on it, 42 sheets of drawings, and a materials list. Leonard estimates building time to be about 6 months. The engine is unique in that it is not a "half VW" but rather uses a full case. Plans for both the Legal Eagle and the engine are also available. The design features a fuselage of welded 4130 steel tubing, mated to an all-wood wing made from spruce. The struts and tail surfaces are made from 6061 T6 aluminium tubing. The flying surfaces are covered with standard aircraft fabric covering materials. The rear fuselage is normally left as an open truss structure to save weight and to ensure that the aircraft does not exceed the FAR 103 maximum speed of 55 knots (102 km/h; 63 mph). Like the fuselage, the taildragger landing gear is sprung steel. The aircraft has been developed into several variants of the basic design including the XL version for larger pilots and a two seat ultralight trainer and Light-sport aircraft. http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com -- Panther Experimental Amateurbuilt light sport aircraft - Dan Johnson gives us a quick look at the Panther experimental light sport aircraft from Sport Performance Aviation during the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo, held at the Sebring Regional Airport Sebring Florida. Dan and Rachel Weseman are a husband and wife team that are producing several aerobatic experimental light sport aircraft, from their facilities near Jacksonville Florida. Their first entry into the market is the single seat Panther in a tail dragger version, but by the end of 2014 they hope to have a tri-cycle gear and a two seat Panther available to the kit builder. The kit features a factory welded 4130 steel cage fuselage, with an all metal wing coming with prebuilt spars and fuel tanks. The single seat Panther is powered by a Corvair automotive conversion, which puts out 120 HP, but Dan indicates that a number of engine mounts will be available including mounts for Lycoming, Continental, Jabiru, UL, and Rotax! The single seat Panther is available with two wing lengths, a 23.5 foot wing for the LSA market, and a 21.5 foot wingspan for those wanting a little more performance. It should be mentioned that the wings can be folded for ease storage in as little as 15 minutes by one person. When we spoke to Dan at Sebring he indicated that the firewall back kit starts at under $12,000.00. Airventure Sport Aviation Convention held at the Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh Wisconsin. The RANS S-20 Raven is the best of two great planes that have been in production at RANS since the 80's. We took the wings, tail, fuel system, and aero servo ailerons from the S-7S Courier, and engine system, control sticks, flap lever, rudder pedals, seats, and instrument panel from the Coyote II S-6S. The intent was to answer the many requests for a side by side bush plane, equal to or beyond the Courier. Construction is straight forward and classic. The proven wing features our special 3" and 2" custom extruded spars, airfoil struts, and stamped aluminum ribs. All welded 4130 steel fuselage and tail complete the fuselage. Design features that will make the plane an easy project include: Welded steel fuselage and tail (all welding is completed at the factory) CNC drilled spars that eliminate almost all critical drilling and locating of holes. One-piece stamped ribs are punched with final hole sizes, and many parts are anodized eliminating the need to prime or corrosion proof. The kits are very detailed and supplied with all critical components. EMB 312 Tucano is a mono turboprop engine low wing basic trainer airplane, produced from mid 1980’s. Conventional 3-axis controls are incorporated into the foam-fiberglass composite structured airframe. Handling is described as straightforward and docile with very forgiving characteristics. It is was sold as a kit. The nose-mounted canard not only provides lift, but also pitch stability and control. Winglets provide directional stability while increasing the effective aspect ratio, without a sacrifice in handling. Split rudders produce yaw while maintaining the winglet advantage. Spoilers and ailerons are used together for roll control at all speeds. The fully independent 3-axis control system enables the Goldwing to handle crosswind takeoffs and landings. Power is provided by a two cylinder, electric start, 25 hp snowmobile engine. Full throttle at sea level gives a climb of 600 fpm at 47 mph, while power is pulled back to 75% throttle for a comfortable 500 fpm. At the economy cruise setting of 50% throttle, the airspeed holds at 50 mph while the fuel consumption drops to one gallon per hour. At higher power settings, the aircraft has been clocked at 85 mph in level flight. High altitude performance at 9,000 feet density altitude resulted in a takeoff roll of 400 feet and a climb rate of 400 fpm. During stall and spin testing, the Goldwing was capable of being flown with full aft stick at an indicated 27 mph, while maintaining full control at all power settings. The canard would not stall unless forced into an accelerated stall. By Dan Johnson, Lately the subject of flying IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) has occupied my time and more than a few pixels on this website. The debate centered on flight into IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions... or situations with no or low visibility, or simplistically, flight into clouds). Although I spend 100% of every day on the subject of Light-Sport Aircraft and other flying machines used for aerial recreation, I can also make mistakes explaining all the ins and outs of the six-year-old regulation abbreviated as SP/LSA. I corrected my last SPLOG post on this subject, but I enlisted Robert Hamilton of Dynon to help further. Robert had politely explained to me that I'd made an error. Rather than tackling this myself, I asked him to contribute. *** From Robert... "At Dynon we are often asked if our avionic products are 'Certified' for IFR flight. In fact, there is no such thing as 'IFR Certification' for amateur-built and LSA aircraft, and so answering the question requires an explanation. *** "The relevant regulation is FAR 91.205, which lists equipment that is required for various types and times of flight: VFR, VFR Night, and IFR. Included for IFR flight are such things as two-way communication and navigation equipment, gyroscopic rate-of-turn indicator, sensitive altimeter, artificial horizon, etc. Most modern digital glass panel avionics meet these requirements for the analog gauges they replace. Interestingly, the definition of 'gyroscopic rate-of-turn' is based on functionality, and so includes solid-state MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system) devices which are used in most digital, solid-state AHRS (Attitude Heading Reference Systems). There are many thousands of home-built aircraft legally flying IFR with 'non-certified' Dynon digital avionics. *** " Does this mean a Light Sport Aircraft with the same digital avionics is IFR legal? The answer to that question must come from the ASTM F37 LSA committee and the aircraft manufacturer. Assuming a LSA is equipped to meet the requirements of FAR 91.205, the avionics equipment is not a restriction. The KR-010 ELF is a single-seater in the light sport and ultralight aircraft class. Dan Johnson talks to the folks from the Airplane Factory of California about the Sling LSA, the Sling 2 kit, the Sling taildragger and the new Sling 4 seat aircraft. Sling 4-4-40 Flies After Four-Day Build by Dan Johnson. A couple days ago I wrote about the Sling 4-4-40 Challenge. I believe this to be of interest for a couple reasons. One is the fast build at an airshow ... much like the intense interest surrounding EAA's One Week Wonder (video) building of a CH-750 at Oshkosh. The other is my promise to offer coverage of the "New GA" or "LSA 4" planes — which are four seaters built by LSA companies using the technologies and techniques those companies know so well. South Africa's Airplane Factory (TAF) Sling 4-4-40 challenge — in which a Sling 4 was built in 4 days by 40 workers — marked yet another milestone for the Sling manufacturer. What normally takes a kit builder 1,000 hours to complete, took place at the 2014 Africa Aerospace event in just four days. Build team leader and company boss Mike Blyth reported it took their team 854 hours from bare kit to flight, although painting and perhaps some interior finish will take a bit more time, a situation similar to the One Week Wonder project. The team consisted of highly skilled workers, and even some marketing, admin and catering staff. (Good heavens! They let the marketing guys work on this ... that's brave of them!) TAF reported their team worked around the clock, with the day and night being split into 10 and 14 hour shifts, respectively. On Day 1, the center and rear fuselage were constructed and joined, the gear and undercarriage were assembled, and the engine was wired and made ready for installation. The handover to the night shift went seamlessly, TAF said, with a half hour handover period that saw 32 people working on the plane at once. The night crew then worked to get the fuselage on its wheels, engine and propeller mounted, and wings three quarters of the way complete. On Day 2, team members wired the engine and panel, the ballistic recovery parachute was installed, and the wings and empennage were nearly completed. With 45 minutes to go on Day 3, Sling 4-4-40 was rolled out of its build area, both wings were attached, landing and strobe lights were connected and working, and the avionics were fired up. As the plane was wheeled out for a celebratory team photo (nearby), company co-founder James Pitman pointed out that it took him and Mike four years to build the first Sling. Day 4 involved a dual inspection and final paperwork. "Support from the crowds was fantastic and [all day] hordes of people crowded around the plane." Mike Blyth turned the key and the Rotax 914UL powering Sling 4 "burst to life" amid cheers and applause from the crowds. "A Sling 4 was born in 4 days," Mike declared! The following day Sling 4 took center stage at the Africa Aerospace show. South Africa tail number ZU-TES was assigned to and affixed to the plane and it took to the skies. The plane performed flawlessly and put on a great show for all in attendance. The Sling was then flown back to The Airplane Factory's home base and was received with warm cheers from the entire staff (video below). TAF observed the 4-4-40 Challenge was one of many accomplishments already achieved by company. Mike and James flew the Sling 2 prototype around the world in 2009 and the Sling 4 in 2011. Also in 2011, the Sling 5577 Challenge took place, in which 5 men from the factory and 5 women who never had touched a rivet gun built a Sling 2 in 7 days. In this issue we talk to a Sky Raider builder/pilot/owner about his tandem seating Sky Raider 2 which he built from kit. His Sky Raider is powered by the Rotax 503. At the time that the video was shot the craft was on large tundra tire, but the owner has plans to build a set of floats and install them on the plane. The Sky Raider 2 is a tandem seating aircraft, while it is labeled as a two seat aircraft it only has control system for the pilot and the weight limit is 150 lbs. The SkyRaider II uses standard stick and rudder controls with flaps. Power can be supplied by a variety of Rotax and Hirth aircraft engines. Performance of the plane would depend on the engine option and what category the aircraft was built to fit into. Panther Sport Aircraft -- Panther (aerobatic) It appears the time for aerobatic Light-Sport Aircraft has arrived. First, we did a video about Tecnam's Snap single place aerobatic aircraft and at Oshkosh 2013, we found the Panther from Panther Sport Aircraft. Using a 100-horsepower Corvair engine, company boss and designer Dan Weseman says the also-single-place Panther can do "mild aerobatics, like an RV-4 can." The new aircraft offers a number of features, which you can catch on our video. Sold as an Experimental Amateur Built aircraft, Panther meets LSA parameters allowing use by a Sport Pilot certificate holder. At E.A.A.'s Airventure at Wittman Field in Oshkosh, we discovered the Panther, a single place aerobatic-capable LSA candidate. Company owner and designer Dan Weseman provides all the details you want to ask in this video. Pilots can expect a 1,500 fpm climb, fast takeoff, and enough strength for loops, rolls, and perhaps more (but check with the company's recommendations). Sold as a kit but meeting LSA parameters allows use of Sport Pilot certificate and the company will support many aircraft engine to the builder's desire. The Panther has many seat adjustments. There are 8 settings for the seat bottom -- allowing you to move the seat back forward and aft. The seat bottom is at about a 35 degree angle, so moving it forward also moves the pilot up in the seat. The seat back adjusts in 8 positions to lean the pilots back angle forward and aft. The rudder pedals have 3 adjustments in the cockpit and 3 in the forward fuselage allowing for 9 different positions. With all of this said, we still would like 2 more inches for those super tall guys that have the long torso. We can accommodate even the tallest pilots with the canopy we have now. As you can see from the gentlemen below who were each 6'6″ tall. Even with all of these adjustments available, we had a few very tall guys with a long torso that hit their head on the top of the canopy. So, while we were near Airplane Plastics Dan and Paul took the Panther canopy over to them for a their review. Airplane Plastics is very easy to work with and we will see if the height to width ratio is something they can do. They are willing to blow a test canopy for us when we are ready. The issue is their cost is higher than what we are getting currently. We will also be working more with Todd's Canopies. Todd has a canopy already blown that we will be trying as soon as we get back to FL. Just Aircraft, Just 103 Solo legal part 103 ultralight aircraft, Troy Woodland www.justaircraft.com We don’t know too much about Just 103 yet but it won’t take long before we get plenty more. Designer Troy Woodland — of SuperSTOL fame — said he almost got the new bird in the air before Oshkosh and will certainly do so in the next few weeks. It should be market ready by end of year. From some folks I’d find that a rather bold promise but Troy has a proven track record of getting flying machines to market. Up front, Troy mounted the Polini Thor 250 engine, which provides 37 horsepower at 7500 rpm. With an engine weight of barely over 40 pounds and the proper Part 103 airframe weight, this Thor engine should provide spirited performance. Fuel usage is very low; remember, these engines got popular on powered paragliders where the pilot carries engine and fuel on his or her back, so big gas tanks aren’t needed. Troy went with a boom tube to the tailplane to keep weight down and to maintain a genuine ultralight look. Readers who have followed this sector may recognize both the Capella Javelin and TEAM’s AirBike. (Also see this Zlin airplane.) The latter comparison is especially apt because this is one of those airplanes you get on rather than in. Pilots side astride the welded steel forward fuselage with their feet on the rudder pedals out in the breeze, although at a top allowed speed of 63 mph (55 knots), that breeze won’t be particularly windy. Troy indicated they have done all the analysis and much of the testing (wings are done even though they weren’t brought to Oshkosh). He is sure it will make the empty weight challenge of 254 pounds. Before it even flies, no price has been set, but with an engine price well under $4,000 and a simple airframe from a very established builder, it is reasonable to think Just 103 will be quite affordable. This is Robert's 25th year in business and the SE 5A is his 25th aircraft design. Robert has build a number of WW I replica aircraft over the years. Many including this SE 5A have gone on to star in movies including "Amelia" and "Flyboys". The SE 5A was also order for a movie which will be shot in the Arizona desert, but based on action that happened in Europe. The SE 5A kit takes about 450 hours to construct, with all of the welding done by the factory. The original SE 5A was powered by an eight cylinder engine, and the plane weighed in at over 1400 lbs. Robert's SE 5A replica come in at about half that weight and is powered by a four cylinder VW engine using a reduction drive. These powerplants are produced by Valley Engineering. http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com – The Double Eagle Airplane is a "plans built" design powered by the widely available stock VW engine, that will carry 2 people with a useful load around 515 Lbs. It can be built and flown under the Light Sport Aircraft Category. This is a strong and simple airplane designed using traditional and proven aviation tubular steel technology. It is easy to build and there has developed around it a strong core of builders that offer help and support for building the aircraft. There is also a full kit developed by John Bolding in consultation with the designer that makes building this design even faster. Leonard built it as his 11th airplane project as an outgrowth of the need to have a trainer for his very popular Legal Eagle Ultralight. The Double Eagle started to form up in 2002 and was first widely seen at the 2003 Oshkosh show. A repeat performance in 2004 broadened its popularity, and many kits started out the door. "DE" is getting special treatment this year (2007) because of an invitation that Leonard Received from the EAA to display the Double Eagle this year at the Air Venture 2007 Air Show. It seems that EAA membership has been asking for an affordable Light Sport Aircraft and most others while fine airplanes tend to run upwards of $50,000. Since the Double Eagle can be certified in this category and costs under 10-12 thousand dollars (even paying retail, and getting some building help), it is very affordable the invite went out. The aircraft is sporting a new Culver prop and has many cosmetic improvements and tweaks this year in celebration of the event. Because the Legal Eagle and the Better Half VW engine tend to dominate the www.betterhalfvw.com website, I decided that this year the "DE" would get its own website and so www.DoubleEagleAirplane.com was born. I hope that all the visitors to this site will give this airplane the look it deserves as it is easy to fly and using auto gas is easy to prep and fuel for those that just want a quick flight around the patch, but has enough useful load that 14 gallons of fuel (10 under LSA), a portable radio and GPS can take you lots of places as well. The airplane is so light it is also easy to trailer (the wings remove simply) and having STOL characteristics can be flown from many flat areas that would barely support the moniker airport. The Zund cutting machine can cut carbon fiber at an astonishing three feet per second, ink mark part numbers and bar codes to integrate individual pieces of carbon fiber into our inventory system to ensure full traceability and correct placement during laminating." He added that the Zund cutter has the capacity to produce parts for more than 100 aircraft per year. When you cover the ultralight industry for over three decades you get to meet a lot of the "original designers." Holmer Kolb, Bill Moyes, Bob Bailey, Randy Schliter, John Moody, to name a few. This year I met and interviewed the original designer of the SR 1 Hornet and designer and manufacturer of the Mariner, Larry Seifert. Larry entered the ultralight market back in the early 70's with his Hornet bi-plane "a cross between the Easy Riser and Volmer Jenson VJ 24." The Hornet was originally powered by a Mac 101 go cart engine, was foot launched, and had three axis controls using elevator and ailerons through a side stick arrangement. With it's large wing area and light weight it made an excellent glider. Later models had landing gear added to them and engine power increased to the Rotax 503. Then in 1989 he introduced his latest design the Mariner. The Mariner is a two place tandem seating amphibious bi-plane. It is currently being offered in kit form, which will take the average builder between 300 and 600 hours to build, and requires no special tools, or jigging. It is also offered as a ready to fly plane under the new Light Sport Aircraft category. The Mariner is set up to take a number of different engines, from the Rotax 503 and 582 on up to the Subaru auto conversion. Depending on engine power cruise comes in between 55 and 75 mph, top speed 95 mph, climb rate 1,000 feet per minute and stall 28 mph. The Fisher FP-202 Koala was designed by Mike Fisher and Wayne Ison in 1981-3 time frame. It was an early Ultralight that actually looked like an airplane - unique in the days of flying spiders made of tubing and sail cloth. All wood construction made it an easy to build and inexpensive kit. Although designed for (US) part 103 Ultralight rules, very few current aircraft make weight as it is common for twin cylinder engines to be used. Truly affordable aircraft can be found in Part 103 ultralights but fine as some of these are, their appeal is also limited, for example, most are open cockpit designs. A void in the availability of a dependable 40-60 horsepower four-stroke aircraft engine may be one reason we see few PSA. Some development of new four-stroke engines is occurring but the ones I've examined are heavier and provide less power than popular two-stroke engines. How about electric power? — What works with electric propulsion today are low drag, lightweight aircraft that do not require much power to fly. A PSA is nearly perfect in definition. Heavier two-seat aircraft cannot offer the endurance, instilling "range anxiety," and are still too expensive. Until battery energy capacity increases significantly electric power may be limited to PSA. My personal experience with electric power shows it can be ideal if: - the aircraft can carry enough battery to fly for an hour (hard to do while meeting Part 103) - the motor can provide enough power at low RPM (to reduce prop noise closer to electric motor noise) The entire system can be designed and integrated for safe operation I have been researching electric power, a technology with huge potential, and I believe a PSA is the perfect place to start. A new electric motor I am developing is designed specifically for aircraft use meaning it has high torque, low RPM, light weight and high reliability. Concurrently a new battery system I am creating has one of the highest Lithium Polymer (LiPo) power densities commercially available and is integrated with the motor, controller, and battery management system to provide safe, reliable operation. Electric power can work well using a PSA with today's technology. If properly designed, it should provide an endurance of more than one hour. Those who want to fly farther and faster could couple the electric motor with a small four-stroke aircraft engine for a viable hybrid. FAA is pondering a regulatory approach to electric propulsion but Experimental Amateur Built rules allow customers to build whatever they want. With a simple design and modern construction methods of matched-hole and jig-less assembly build time can be measured in weeks not years. Britain's CAA published a revised SSDR (Single-Seat Deregulated) rule that allows the sale of a finished single seat aircraft up to 315 kilograms (693 pounds) gross weight when equipped with an airframe parachute and a reasonable maximum stall speed of 35 knots (40 mph). This is a perfect PSA rule which I hope will spread to other countries. The future may reward development of viable electric and four-stroke power systems and single seat airframes with modern construction and ramp appeal. Let's call them Personal Sport Aircraft. Welcome Aeropilot L 600 (Legend) 600 imported by U.S. representative Aeropilot USA, which received a Special LSA Airworthiness Certificate from FAA on September 21st, 2016. After a bit of delay, we’ve now added L 600 (Legend) 600 to our 143-aircraft-long SLSA List. Deon Lombard is the American rep. He comes from an aviation family following Anton Lombard, a World War II pilot who founded Safair Freighters in South Africa. They report this was the nation’s first air cargo service and is now the largest air cargo company in the country. An aviation engineer by training, Deon created a flight school in South Africa and now runs Fly Light Sport California in Fullerton. First introduced in Europe at the 2011 Aero Friedrichshafen show, the Czech-based manufacturer said, “L 600 (Legend) was designed as an 80%-scale version of the very successful Cessna 182, with two passenger seating for [European] Ultralight or LSA.” They added, “But [L 600 (Legend) 600] actually has more passenger room than the Cessna.” Aeropilot’s European model is called L 600 (Legend) 540. Aeropilot Ltd., began to plan production of the 600 kilogram (1.320 pound) L 600 (Legend) 600 in late 2014, building the first in 2015 for an Australian customer. For several years, the southern hemisphere nation has accepted the ASTM standards, allowing compliant Light-Sport Aircraft to be sold down-under. In May 2016 that first Aussie L 600 (Legend) 600 completed a 2,800-nautical-mile round trip circumnavigating all of southern Australia. According to the Czech producer, “LSA L 600 (Legend) 600 is intended for elementary pilot training … and for traveling.” Low operating costs allow lower cost pilot certificates, said Aeropilot. “Great performance and extra utilizable load allow comfortable and fast traveling. LSA L 600 (Legend) 600 is full-composite [high] wing monoplane made of sandwich materials.” Desginer Jaromír Smékal used modern composite techniques to achieve a lower empty weight that increases useful load.” L 600 (Legend) 600’s fuselage is constructed using sandwich technology with a carbon composite material. L 600 (Legend)’s wing is constructed similarly. We are “introducing the Aeropilot L 600 (Legend) 600 starting at $85,000,” said Aeropilot USA, “with the Starter Package [equipped with] the minimum required for daytime, VFR flight. “Great for the pilot who doesn’t plan to enter controlled airspace.” L 600 (Legend) retails for approximately $100,000 with the Trainer Package. The Legal Eagle is so named because it is capable of being built in legal compliance with the United States FAR 103 Ultralight Vehicles regulations, even when equipped with a four stroke engine. How about something much more affordable? A taildragger called Bearhawk has picked up accolades from AirVenture judges and owners appear very loyal. Sometimes those of us close to factory built Light-Sport Aircraft tend to forget about the homebuilt community. However, more pilots exercising the privileges of Sport Pilot are flying kit-built airplanes than ready-to-fly models, a trend that is likely to continue because a kit represents a lower cost option and one where the owner can more easily do all repair work. Let me clarify, though. Bearhawk is Sport Pilot eligible (using a term my longtime EAA friend, Ron Wagner, coined); it is technically not a Light-Sport. Bearhawk LSA made its debut at AirVenture two years ago as a prototype constructed by its designer, Bob Barrows. Recently a customer flew the first completed kit. Bearhawk Aircraft owner/builder Mark Goldberg completed the first Bearhawk LSA quick-build kit, N514AK, and flew it to AirVenture. The trip from Texas took 9.7 hours cruising at just under 100 mph while burning 4.5 gallons per hour. Portions of the flight were done at up to 118 mph consuming 6 gph Mark said. Goldberg's Bearhawk uses a Barrows-engineered 105-horsepower Continental Motors O-200 engine under the cowl. Following a four seat model, Bearhawk LSA is "a clean-sheet design with an all-new airfoil, developed by Harry Riblett," said Barrows. Construction is similar to other Bearhawk aircraft, with fuselage and tail surfaces of welded 4130 chromoly frames covered in fabric. The all aluminum, flush riveted wings are supported by a single strut. Bearhawk designs are popular for their solid performance and pleasant flight qualities. The designs are known for short field capability, gentle slow speed manners, yet manage reasonably high cruise speeds. The legions of folks buying Cubalike designs can consider Bearhawk and save a bundle while flying faster, not a bad combination. Bearhawk is available as a quick-build kit from the Austin, Texas company. Empty weight of Bearhawk LSA is 750+ pounds, depending on equipment an owner installs, yielding a useful load of 570 pounds. With 30-gallon tanks full of fuel, payload calculates to 390 pounds. Of course local flying can be done with less than that large amount of fuel; the 31-inch-wide cockpit will accommodate a couple big fellows in tandem seating (photo). As the airplane is designed for a maximum weight of 1,500 pounds, Bearhawk boasts an additional margin at the 1,320-pound LSA limit. A quick-build Bearhawk LSA with no welding required and wings completed to a significant extent — including full riveting of the top skin, fuel tanks, and ailerons — costs $36,000. The welded steel frame has all tabs in place and is primed and painted. Even with exterior paint, avionics, and a new O-200 engine, a completed airplane may cost less than $80,000 or about half of a basic model CubCrafters. Other engine choices (65 to 120 horsepower is supported) can further hold down the expense, especially if you find a good used powerplant. The Nieuport 28 (N.28C-1) was a French biplane fighter aircraft flown during World War I, built by Nieuport and designed by Gustave Delage. It was the first fighter airplane flown in combat by pilots of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in WWI. Its second armed patrol with an AEF unit on April 14, 1918, resulted in two victories when Lts. Alan Winslow and Douglas Campbell (the first American-trained ace) of the 94th Aero Squadron each downed an enemy aircraft. Although the Nieuport 28 was considered obsolete at the time, American pilots maintained a favorable ratio of victories to losses with it. The Nieuport was more maneuverable than the sturdier SPAD XII that replaced it, but it had a reputation for fragility and a tendency to shed its upper wing fabric in a dive. Even so, many WWI American pilots such as Quentin Roosevelt, the son of US president Theodore Roosevelt, as well as American aces like the 26-victory ace, Capt. That's good news for Kitfox and is a common situation for LSA providers as they experience growing sales after some slow years. Manufacturers have to balance the costs involved with attending a show with the need to keep staff working to build and deliver airplanes. "Kitfox has been attending this great event for many years and enjoyed some terrific island hoping in the Bahamas as a reward for those working the show," said John. "We will really miss the fun of greeting folks and getting away from the Idaho winter, but meeting our delivery commitments comes first." Good for the Kitfox Team for sticking to business, though of course the crowds at Sebring missed seeing their shiny, affordable airplanes. To compensate, Kitfox offered a show special as if they attended. For example, the company includes reimbursement credits when buyers visit their expanded plant in Idaho. "It's like a mini vacation, with flying thrown in," John said, plus they offer some free options. One of the best contenders is the Affordaplane - or 'A-Plane' as this sophisticated, yet ultra-simple ultralight is popularly called. The Affordaplane was introduced in 2001 as a back-to-basics, all aluminum, true three axis airplane that anyone could build, especially those on a tight budget. The design goals for this unique airplane were nostalgic looks (having incorporated the best elements of classic taildraggers such as the Cubs and Champs), ease of assembly, and performance that rivals more expensive ultralights. Safety was also paramount, and resulted in an airframe that surrounds the pilot through 360 degrees. A thirteen year perfect safety record backs up the claim that this is one safe, tough bird. The A-Plane's fuselage structure is based on immensely strong two-inch square tubes, similar to many gyroplanes. A technique known as 'match-hole' drilling is used to join the parts. Cut, drill, and bolt, to get a perfect fit. Many builders complete their airframe in a single weekend, an unheard of achievement in airplane construction! At 5' high, the A-Plane is 17'3" long with a 27.5' wing span. The wing features full span ailerons, for perfect control even during strong crosswinds, that would ground other ultralights. Weight is a legal 254 pounds with a gross weight of 540 pounds. This airplane can easily accommodate 6' plus pilots that weigh up to 240 pounds. Controls are standard three-axis stick and rudder with full span ailerons. The flight envelope was designed to be ultralight legal in accordance with FAR Part 103. Cruise is around 60 mph with a vne of 75 mph. Stall meets the 27 mph or lower minimum. Takeoffs are between 45 to 50 mph and and landing speeds come in around 28 to 30 mph. Climb rates average 1000 feet per minute. Engines recommended in the plans are in the 35 to 45 hp range. One increasingly popular choice is the 1/2 Volkswagen engine. The Airplane Factory (TAF) produces the Sling series of world-circling aircraft (literally) and now this fine-flying, all-metal beauty is available in the United States as a Special Light-Sport Aircraft. Here is an LSA to follow. You have to admire the confidence of The Airplane Factory partners Mike Blyth and James Pittman as they took a fresh design and proceeded to circumnavigate the world during 40 days in 2009. This sounds like a fool's mission until you learn more about the principal designer. Mike had already flown the immense distance from the southern tip of South America up through Central and North America, across the Atlantic, down through Europe, across the Mediterranean, and north to south across Africa to his home base in South Africa. He called the trip "South to South" and even made a highly-watchable video about the experience. And these two incredible voyages are but a couple in his logbook of amazing flights. Nonetheless, the success came not only from superior piloting skills and daring but from a long time acquiring knowledge of aircraft. Certainly, you get to know your plane very well in hundreds of hours of cross country flying but Mike also learned the intimate aspects of design work. Indeed, Sling was created using the latest computer software in so precise a fashion that taking off on a globe-girdling flight shortly after completing the airplane was a well-calculated risk. It was a challenge, aeronautically and physically, but neither Blyth nor Pittman worried excessively about their heavily-loaded Sling (carrying more than 700 pounds in fuel alone!). They knew it would do the job and they proved their claim in a dramatic fashion. Now, as they say, "You can fly the adventure!" Maybe the best news about Sling's flight characteristics is that they are not in the least adventurous. The bird may have transported the South Africans around the planet but I found the design to have excellent control harmony (as good as the best I've flown), gentle stalls with ample warning, and great ease of landing. When you lower flaps no big pitch movement occurs though slips also worked well to get to the runway at the target point. Stability throughout the normal range of maneuvers I explored was entirely predictable. You won't find too many in the USA for demo flying in 2012 but two thoughts on that: (1) It's well worth a trip to where ever you'll find a Sling to take a flight; and, (2) the scarcity of Slings won't last long given agreeable pricing and wonderful airborne qualities. Production of the ready-to-fly STOL CH 750 Light Sport (LS) aircraft will resume. Finishing of the STOL airplane will take place at M-Squared facilities in southern Alabama (near Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico) from assemblies manufactured by Zenair Ltd. The STOL CH 750 produced by M-Squared Aircraft will come with a standard paint scheme, Continental O-200 power, Sensenich propeller and Garmin G3X avionics. Airplane builder Paul Mather sees a market for a two-place factory-built aircraft with Continental power and a Zenith pedigree, delivered ready to fly for $99,990 and full support from Zenair Ltd, in business since 1974. “There’s a good pie out there,” Mather said “Not everybody wants to go 120 knots, or 300 knots.” Mather, owner of M-Squared Aircraft, has been in business for two decades, building Breese tube-and-fabric ultralight and light sport aircraft (LSA) models, and recently struck a deal with Zenair to complete the all-metal Zenith STOL CH 750 in his St. Elmo, Alabama, facility. Mather’s first CH 750 delivery, expected this spring, will mark the first factory-built version of the CH 750 kit t. Mather expects to produce one a month thereafter through the end of the year, ramping up to two per month in 2017. The aircraft will be largely built by Zenair in Canada, arriving in Alabama in nearly finished form but without paint, avionics, and engine (firewall forward). Mather will install a factory new 100-horsepower Continental O-200 engine (produced locally in Alabama) that is able to get the two-seater off the ground in just 100 feet, along with Garmin touch-screen avionics. Each STOL CH 750 Mather builds will be ASTM compliant, and registered as an S-LSA with Zenair as the listed manufacturer. Mather said his deal with Zenair effectively makes his facility an extension of the Zenair factory in Canada, with all of the quality control, standardization, and ongoing airworthiness support that comes with that. “We’re looking forward to continued success here,” Mather said. He noted that the S-LSA version of the STOL CH 750 offers buyers who are not inclined to build their own access to a popular kit known for stable low-speed handling, an excellent STOL aircraft.
