The next? Not so much... This video will teach you all about how to stay motivated to lose weight backed by science! But after just a couple days, you’re back to binge eating chips and watching hours of Netflix. What is happening? Why is it so difficult and what does the science say about motivation? Today, we’re going to be answering these questions and uncovering the real solutions to how to stay motivated to lose weight, backed by scientific solutions. Point #1. Motivation is fleeting and losing weight takes time The main problem people face when wondering how to stay motivated to lose weight is that motivation wears off and temptation will always exist. My boy Zig Ziglar has a good quote about the solution to this: “People often say motivation doesn’t last, well neither does bathing. That’s why we recommend it daily.” The secret here is to use our incredible 21st century technology to keep reinvigorating yourself with more motivation. The easy ways to do this are: • Listen to daily podcasts on being healthy • Read books our use audible.com to listen to health and fitness audiobooks • Or even attend conferences and events held on health and fitness All of these things will help re-inspire you and keep you motivated Point #2. Everyone has limited amounts of willpower Have you ever noticed it’s easier to make tough decisions in the morning but harder to make them evening? This is because your willpower, similar to a muscle, is a limited resource. After a long day of hard decision making, a psychological syndrome called decision fatigue sets in and makes it more difficult to say no to that pizza The solution here is to use habits instead of relying on willpower. Habits, since not consciously made, don’t dip into those willpower reserves and are decisions made on autopilot. Simple habits like drinking a large glass of water right when you wake up or not eating after 7pm are easy to establish and will help you when your motivation and willpower fades. Point #3. Progress can be deceiving The mirror plays games when It comes to losing weight and getting in shape. Many dieters have experienced the situation where they are losing weight and feeling better, but are seeing no physical results in the mirror. This can be crazy frustrating. The solution is that measurements don’t lie. It may not sound sexy, but diligent tracking progress is crucial for success • Yes, take photos, but also make sure to • Weigh yourself • Take measurements • Take videos • And keep studious track of these records. Progress = motivation and this will keep you from getting discouraged by the mirror. Point #4. Being healthy doesn’t have to suck When most people think about getting health and fit they envision eating dry chicken breast, bland broccoli, and running for hours on the treadmill. It doesn’t have to be like that, nor should it. Find something you love, especially when it comes to exercise • Yoga • Pilates • Boxing • Crossfit • Booty Bootcamp • Biking • Running • Hiking • Weight Lifting • Prancercising • Kayaking The are A TON of options With all those options out there, you have no excuse not to find something you love and can stick with. Remember a perfect workout routine you hate is going to be less effective than finding a type of exercise you love and can stick with. Point #5. Design small rewards for sticking to the plan All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. We humans may think we are complex and gifted beings, however, we are still simple animals. Basic reward systems in almost all major weight loss studies work on us just like our furry brethren. As talked about in our previous video on New Year Resolutions, reward systems work. Having a cheat meal once a week or even a reward day every few weeks on a diet can provide a lot of psychological relief and something to look forward to on those more temptation filled days. So in summary the solutions for how to stay motivated to lose weight are: #1. Find a daily source of motivation #2. Focus on establishing 1-2 core habits you can stick with #3. Track your progress diligently #4. Find a type of exercise and diet plan you ENJOY #5. As a result of this it will become much more difficult for you to lose weight. You may be eating more than you think Keep a food diary for a week and write down everything you eat. You could be surprised! This will help you to cut out the extra calories you didn't realize you were consuming. You could be making bad food choices Read the labels carefully when you go shopping. Don't be fooled by the 'low fat' labels on products such as cheese. Cheese is always high fat. The same is true for most other products. Be aware of the calorie content of what you are eating. This usually happens after you have lost a few pounds and then suddenly you can't lose any. To overcome your plateau, shake up your weight loss routine by doing new exercise and by following a new eating plan. Weight loss has to be the easiest fitness goal to achieve. Tips to Achieve your Weight Loss New Years Resolution Goal
If you are among the thousands, if not millions of people around the world that made a New Year’s Resolution to lose weight you found the right video. Registered Dietitian Abbey Sharp gives you some no-nonsense information about dieting properly so you can achieve your Weight Loss New Year’s Resolution Goal. Her first tip is pretty straightforward. Watch out for diets that are asking you to cut out all 3 major food groups: Dairy, Grain, and Fruits and Vegetables. By cutting out these food groups you are going to be missing out on essential nutrients that we all need to keep our bodies running in tip-top condition. In addition to all that you will also be missing out on crucial vitamin intake and run the risk of overdoing it when it comes to fats. Fiber is a key component in helping you feel fuller, longer. In other words fiber is great for people that are dieting, and don’t even think about giving up carbs. When you workout you burn calories and that in turn builds muscle. Instead of giving the axe to all carbs straight across the board just try to focus on the slow burning ones. Swap your refined grains for whole grains, fruit juice for fresh or frozen fruit, and opt for low fat milk instead of cream in your coffee. The second tip Abbey has to help you diet smarter this year is to modify your workout. While it would seem to make sense that more cardio for an extended duration would burn more calories and result in more weight loss research has actually shown that this type of workout has the potential to not just burn calories, but burn muscle as well and over time. That will have the undesirable effect of decreasing your metabolism. A fast metabolism is a necessity when burning calories, even when you aren’t exercising you’re burning calories. In fact, you actually burn calories while you’re sleeping. Abbey isn’t saying to give up cardio, just to mix in some strength training exercises and do the cardio in bursts. Cardio can be extremely beneficial when done correctly, without question. Abbey’s next dieting tip to get you to your weight loss goal this year is to avoid any diet that tells you to limit your calorie intake to an absurdly low level, such as 1,000 calories a day. This approach to dieting will always backfire in the long run. By taking is so little food and starving your body of the nutrients it actually needs you will once again be running the risk of decreasing your metabolism as this approach is not going to result in muscle gain. Instead of starving yourself focus on portion control and balance. Keep your meals well balanced with proper portions from each food group. Stick with lean meats, fresh vegetables, whole grains, and fresh or frozen fruit. The best way to get ahead with this approach is to make the vegetables the star of the show. Vegetables are a great food for filling up without filling out. For the other two tips on proper dieting technique you’re going to have to watch the entire video. Abbey addresses the dessert issues we all face when dieting and debunks the myth that eating after eight is going to make you gain weight. The important thing to remember is that extreme eating plans usually do more harm than good. Take care of your body, it will thank you for it. 18. How to Create Custom Workout Optimal for Your Fitness Goals
In this video we describe how to create a custom workout based on your fitness goals. Most of us usually have one of the four goals when we start a strength-training program, these are 1. Gain Mass 2. Get Lean 3. Build Strength 4. Sports Performance Lets get into the details on how we can design a workout optimal for each of these fitness goals Build Mass: This type of workout is optimized for muscle growth. Compound movements provide better stimulus for muscle growth, although isolation exercises may also be used to target a specific muscle group for aesthetic purposes. Generally the goal here is to take the muscle to failure and not to lift maximal weight. This can be achieved by lifting moderate weights over moderate rep ranges. Ideal rep range is between 6-12 reps per set. Rest between sets should be 60s-120s for compound movements and 30-90s for isolation. Generally compound exercise must be performed at lower rep ranges (6-8) while isolation exercises should have higher reps (8-12). Compound exercises mostly should be performed before the isolation exercises. Get Lean: This type of workout is optimized for fat loss while maintaining muscle mass. To lose fat we need to burn more calories, since compound movements engage more muscles they burn more calories and are preferred. An optimal fat loss program is the one with high reps ranges 10-30 reps/set. Generally the rest between sets must be minimized to provide best results. Also, the faster and more explosively the workout is performed, higher will be the calories burnt. Most often the strength training is performed in the form of HIIT or cardio strength training, where an exercise is performed fast and explosively for certain period of time followed by a short rest and then the cycle is repeated. Steady state cardio should also be incorporated on rest days to optimize the fat loss. Build Strength: This type of workout is optimized to increase your ability to lift heavy weights. Compound movements are a must for this goal. The focus should be on the three big lifts bench press, squat and deadlift. The target should be to lift as heavy as you can near your 1 rep max. For such a goal ideal workout is the one with low reps (2-5 reps per set) and long breaks (2-5 minutes) in between the sets. Since the weights lifted a near maximum, the muscles must be give given atleast 72 hours of rest in between. Athletic Performance: This type of workout is optimized for power production, that is, how quickly can we move the weight? Explosive movements such as Olympic lifts or plyometrics should be included in such a workout. Usually the athletes who do sports training are looking for a balance between strength and endurance hence the rep ranges generally are similar as that of building mass 6-12 per set. The approach followed is that of periodization where a certain period of time is dedicated for building base strength and power for the sport. As the athlete gets closer to the event the training is shifted more towards the sports performance while strength training decreased to sustaining levels. This way the athlete just maintains their strength gains, while honing their sports skills. So there you have it, the difference in the workouts program for different fitness goals. One of the most common concerns with fast weight loss is that it usually takes a huge amount of effort both with diet and exercise to lose weight fast which leads people to resort to unhealthy methods. Some people that try to lose weight as fast as possible attempt dangerous methods like crash diets, or they starve themselves, or they go from 0 to 100 with exercise and all of these approaches can be very unhealthy. Also you probably can't maintain and keep up with these excessive approaches to weight loss as permanent lifestyle changes. You can stick to a crash diet for a week, maybe two, maybe even a month, but by month 4 chances are high that you've long since quit. Most experts believe that when you lose weight slowly you do it through ways that allow you develop healthy eating behaviors that you can continue applying long term to keep the weight off. On the other hand we're told that most diets that promote rapid weight loss are often very low in calories and nutrients, which may put you at risk of many health problems, like muscle loss, nutritional deficiencies and gallstones, especially if you follow a rapid weight loss diet for a long time. Many people on a crash diet will also experience hunger, fatigue, muscle cramps, dizziness, and they might feel cold throughout the day. On top of that it's also believed that when you lose weight too quickly chances are very high that you're not losing fat mass, but you're instead losing water weight or worse yet muscle tissue. You can't be losing body fat in a healthy way consistently week after week at a rate higher than 2 pounds per week. Can you? Or is that just a myth that we're constantly told. Before we get into what the studies have to say on this topic, I'd like to say that as a personal trainer that has worked with thousands of clients I can tell you that some people lose weight really fast and others lose weight really slow, but based on my experience whether they lose the weight fast or slow doesn't seem to have that much of an impact on maintaining that weight. In fact from what I've seen some people especially people that are really heavy, if they don't see results fast they'll get demotivated and quit. Let me give you a simple example, if you're looking to lose 10 pounds and you're losing the average of 2 pounds per week, then every week you're 20 percent closer to your goal. You know it'll take you about a month of maintaining a clean diet with consistent exercise to get to your goal weight. However, what happens when you're looking to lose 60 pounds to get to your goal weight. At the rate of 2 pounds per week, it's gonna take you 30 weeks of perfect dieting just to meet your goal weight. That means after half a year of controlling what foods you eat and how much. This is great for those people who live in cold climates because you get to hide that extra fat with layers! What should you be eating on this diet? For gaining muscle, I’d recommend eating a balanced diet; lots of veggies, meats, fruits, and general quote unquote, healthy foods. The macronutrient split should be around 35% protein/35% carbs/30% fat. There’s recommendations out there for a 40/30/30 split in protein to carbs to fat, or 30/40/30 split in the same ratio, but really, it’s going to depend on your body and how it affects you. You’ll have to play around and experiment to see what’s best, because even though you’ll definitely gain a little bit of fat, you definitely don’t want to gain A LOT of fat. What you DEFINITELY don’t want to do is to just eat a whole bunch of processed food that just plain makes you fat. Who shouldn’t do this diet? I’d argue people that are just trying to maintain or lose their weight to stay AWAY from this diet. Why? It’s not because you CAN’T lose or maintain your weight with a 6 meals a day balanced diet, but it’s because prepping and eating 6 meals out of the day just takes up a lot of time and energy. You’ll be better off with the next type of diet, which I’m going to get right into: – Intemittent Fasting Intermittent fasting is a topic that I’ve gotten into a lot before. Click here for one of my first Intermittent Fasting videos, which give you detailed reasons why you should intermittent fast! I’m not going to go full on into all the benefits of intermittent fasting and how to intermittent fast, but I’ll just go over my personal favorite reasons to intermittent fast and how to do it. Intermittent fasting increases your focus, gives you long lasting energy, and the best part, it saves you time! You won’t have to spend a ton of time cooking and prepping multiple meals, nor do have to waste time eating. Ketogenic Diet There are studies that show benefits such as lowered tryglycerides and blood glucose after going on a ketogenic diet, but it’s always safer to monitor how your body responds. This is a diet for those people that are already at their desired body level and they’re trying to maintain their physique, or for people that are trying to gain muscle at a slower rate, or lose weight at a slower rate. What workout do I do? How many carbs should I eat? What's the best diet plan? How many days per week should I work out? What are the best exercises to build abs? These are all external variables that are important but before we could solve the external we have to first deal with the internal. So what do I mean by internal, I mean who you are or I should say who you think you are impacts your results when it comes to losing weight in a huge way. What I'm talking about here is your identity. What or who do you identify with? Let's pretend that you've put on a bunch of weight, you go to the doctor and he tells you that you are now considered obese according to your BMI. Do you believe that you are an obese person looking to lose weight or do you believe that you are a fit healthy person that gained a bunch of weight and now needs to lose it. This thought process is critical because it will impact all those other external variables that we just talked about. Now I'm not going to stand here and tell you some bs like you can use your mind to think the weight away. But, without taking care of the internal thoughts your external efforts will be much less effective, and even if you are successful as the obese person that lost weight if you don't change your identity in that process, on the inside you will still be that obese person and will probably regain that weight. What you identify with has a strange way of pulling you right back to that same place. So if you're thinking "I'm obese but I'm trying to lose the weight" or "I am big boned but I'm gonna try to slim down" you're identity is gonna fight you at every turn due to self preservation. Even if you lose the weight you're going to be that naturally obese person that has to always fight and struggle with the weight to keep it off. That is so draining to your willpower, which is by the way a finite resource. Identifying yourself as a fit person makes it so much easier to workout, eat healthy, and take care of yourself. It makes it so much more likely that you will reach and achieve your fitness goals. When you are the fit person you say I don't eat junk food, I don't miss my workouts, and I don't quit when I feel the burn. On the other hand if you identify yourself as the Out of shape unhealthy person you're going to say I can't eat junk food, I can't miss my workout, and I can't quit when I feel the burn. Are you guy starting to see the difference here? The person that identifies with being fit says "I don't" and shuts off every possibility of doing something that would threaten his or her identity. It makes it simple, do you want this candy, I don't eat candy, Done! No willpower drained, my identity is not aligned with damn candy. On contrary if you say you can't eat candy by saying can't you're initiating a battle. What you're saying is the inner fatty wants to eat that candy, but I can't because I'm trying to lose weight. That is a huge drain on your willpower and there will likely be a point in time where you cave. There was a study done on hotel maids where 84 maids were divided into two groups. A maids job as I'm sure many of you can imagine is pretty physically demanding. The researchers divided the maids into two groups, and had a separate meeting with each group. Both groups were told that this was going to be a study to improve the health and happiness of hotel maids. The control group was simply informed of the benefits of exercise, but were NOT told how many calories they were burning doing their work, and also were NOT told that their work actually constituted a good form of exercise. The other group was informed about the benefits of exercise and told how many calories they were burning while doing their hotel cleaning work each day. They were specifically told how many calories activities such as changing sheets, vacuuming, and scrubbing bathrooms were burning each hour. They were reminded of this with handouts and posters so it stuck in their minds. It turned out that the group of maids that was informed daily about the calorie-burning effects of their normal work routines ended up losing a significant amount of weight, lowered their waist-to-hip ratio, and decreased their blood pressure. The control group of hotel attendants that was not told about the calories they burned while doing their work showed NONE of these improvements.

Many people embark on a weight loss program without a firm understanding of their realistic goal or the exact plan that will help them cross the finish line to weight loss success. Similar to any journey through uncharted territory you may make, the key to your weight loss success is to establish a realistic goal which you can maintain as part of your new healthy lifestyle. The power of positive thinking combined with the reinforcement you receive from tracking your progress each day provide the fuel you need to accomplish your goal. Maintain a Positive Attitude Regardless of the task you wish to accomplish in life a positive attitude is critical to achieve the desired result. You must begin by believing that the weight loss task you are about the begin will have a significant impact on your health and longevity, as research has shown that losing just 5 -- 10% of your body weight can significantly lower your risk of disease. You should only begin your journey when you feel fully committed to finish, regardless of the inevitable bumps you'll encounter along the way. Defining a Realistic Goal Once your mind is set you'll need to put together a realistic plan and goal that will successfully lead you to the finish line and monitor your progress for encouragement along the way. The most important part of goal setting is to make sure that your target weight is attainable. Don't feel you need to weigh the same as when you were 18. Many things change in your body over the years, and often people find they feel great and experience optimal health at a weight which about 10% higher than the lowest weight from your college years. Monitoring Your Progress Of equal importance to setting a realistic goal and positive attitude is tracking your daily progress with nutritional software or a food journal. The positive reinforcement you receive from monitoring your weight, exercise and food will help you to get by an occasional rough day where you stray from your diet or when you hit a weight plateau. The results of a study published in the eHealth Journal of Medical Internet Research found that participants who recorded and tracked their progress using an online software interface were significantly more likely to stay with a weight loss plan and maintain their weight loss compared to those who didn't monitor their progress. By nature, we're goal oriented and a journal helps keep us focused on reaching a pre-established goal. Write Your Plan on Paper Before you start on your weight loss journey, write down the steps you'll need to follow to hit your goal and the benefits to your health from meeting your target weight. Include diet, menus, exercise and how you will fit work, family and friends into your program. Make a list of the numerous health benefits such as improving heart health, improving immunity, increasing brain power, feeling great and the knowledge that you are lowering your risk of an early death. The only way to successfully lose weight is to properly plan the steps you'll need to hit your target goal and track your progress. Without these commitments, you'll quickly veer off course the first time you reach a weight plateau or succumb to a sugary treat. By having your whole plan detailed in writing ahead of time, you can easily continue to reinforce your new lifestyle which will lead to vibrant health and your ideal weight. This wasn't the easiest of a video to do...no one likes talking about their own imperfections but hopefully you guys can see that Im not immune to gaining weight. I know I wasnt *heavy* but I knew I could be better. Its not about being skinny, its about being the very best version of yourself that you can possibly be. And for me (personally) thats not really skinny- i think I looked like an emaciated lollipop in that photo. Dont give up! It takes awhile to figure out what works and what doesnt for you. Its frustrating at times but just enjoy the journey and be proud of how far youve come :) PS. I really cant give a good answer to generic work out questions. These kind of videos always spark a flurry of "I want to lose weight what should I do?" type of questions. Theres no secret- eat clean, stay active, drink water and lots of rest! Extreme Weight Loss Meals - Salmon and Asparagus
Hey everyone! This episode of extreme weight loss meals features a very basic introduction meal: Salmon and Asparagus. Fish is very light and high in protein and is a very common thing to work into your own weight loss diet. Personally, I really enjoy the taste of salmon and this is a very simple way to prepare it. Salt, pepper, lemon slices, and onion wedges baked at 425 F for 12-15 minutes until it flakes easily. I paired it was asparagus for two reasons; 1. I had it leftover in my fridge 2. it cooks at the exact same time and temperature as the salmon so it was really easy to throw in at the same time. Salmon is a really easy meal to work in a variety of veggies like a stir fry, broccoli, spinach salad, the list goes on. Again, this meal is only an introduction to cooking to lose weight. It is not meant to be anything extravagant, it simply serves as an example of how easy it is to cook and prepare food that contributes to a goal of maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle, or contributing to losing weight to meet a target fitness goal. I would highly suggest trying out some different ways of preparing this meal and pairing it with other sides, at the end of the day you will only become more versatile in your kitchen!
