A social media marketing plan is like a mini-marketing plan. Depending on whether or not you already have in place a company wide marketing plan in place will dictate the level and detail of your social media marketing plan. But even if you’re starting from scratch, a social media marketing plan is a great place to start to ensure you’ve got your bases covered and time spent on social won’t be time wasted. Step 1) Current Analysis – Where are you now? The first step is to identify what you’re already doing, and what platforms you’re on. From here you can decide where you want to go. Do you already have a few accounts set-up? Do they have customized headers and branding? Do you have any followers or “likes”? Step 2) Competitor Analysis – Where are they now? While it’s often a good idea to lead rather than follow, it’s still prudent to be aware of what the competition is doing. Making a list of competitors and their current social media usage can indicate 1 of 2 things. Step 3) Goals – Where would you like to be? Having goals is important to prevent 3 hour marathon Facebook sessions that provides little or no value. Is your goal to increase brand awareness? Drive traffic to your website? Build social authority? Step 4) Strategy – How are we going to do this? Given the goals set in the previous step, how are you going to achieve these? A few common social media strategies include: Listening, Engaging, Influencing and Contributing. Step 5) Target Market - Who’s going to listen? Knowing the details about your target market and the key statistics around which social media platforms they tend to use can help determine what to post, where to post, when, and how. Step 6) Implementation – It’s go time! When most people think social media, they think Facebook, maybe Instagram or Twitter, and possibly Pinterest. The truth is there are a ton of other related tools available under the header of social media that may, or may not, be suitable for your needs. But here’s the good news, you don’t need to use them all! In fact, you’re probably best to select only 1 or maybe 2 to start, and focus on doing them well. Determining which ones depend on your business, goals, and of course, your target market. Step 7) Monitoring – How are we doing? As Peter Drucker said, “what gets measured, gets managed” so this is a good opportunity to look back at our goals, see how we’re doing, and most importantly, see if we’re making any progress. Which is why a key part of having a social media marketing plan is to measure your performance and see how things are actually working out. The best and easiest way to do this is with something called a KPI, or key performance indicator. KPI’s are a marketing term that allow us to really identify what’s important, and then measure that. Step 8) Budgeting – How much are we going to spend? Having a social media marketing budget is an important part of the social media marketing plan because contrary to popular belief, social media in a business context isn’t free. There are costs involved with the time to set everything up, plan, and implement, as well as advanced options like monitoring, content creation, sharing, and increasingly important, promotion. Step 9) Return on Investment – How much did we make? Calculating a quantitative return on investment with social media can be a difficult task due to its largely qualitative results. It’s challenging after all to put an exact dollar amount on improved brand perception, increased brand awareness, or the number of customers reached or impressions gained through exposure from social media. Conclusion At the end of the day a good social media marketing plan is well worth the investment. Benjamin Franklin’s famous statement “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail” rings true in many circumstances, and especially when it comes to social media marketing. Carefully putting together a social media plan could be the difference between getting no results or accidental results at best and actually experiencing an increase in business with real evidence behind it. A social media plan is simply the summary of everything you plan to do and achieve for your business using social networks. In fact, a social media plan is the most important aspect of social media marketing and 50% of time should be spent on putting it together and only 20% of time should be allocated to executing the plan and then 30% of the time should be spent monitoring and analyzing results. Unfortunately, only a very small percentage of business owners have a strategically crafted social media plan and therefore social media marketing ends up being a waste of time rather than a powerful marketing channel. In order to put together a social media plan, it is important to follow the steps below: Step 1: Audit your accounts Before even thinking about what you would like to achieve thanks to social networks, it is important to know where you are at on social media. In other words, identify how many social media networks you have joined to market your business, make sure the usernames for each account is the same across all social networks so there is a certain level of consistency, identify how large or small your audience is for each account, notice the level of engagement on each, check when they were last updated and if the branding is congruent across all social networks and up-to-date. Once you have gathered all the information above, it is important to know how behind or ahead you are of your competition on social media, which leads us to step 2. Step 2: Identify your competition Another benefit of social media is its transparency: the ability to know at all times what your competitors are up to. By simply looking at their profiles on social media and where they are at in terms of engagement and audience size as well as seeing what is working for them or not, you then have a clear road map of what you should be focusing on and what the easiest and fastest ways are to achieve your goals. Step 3: Set goals As mentioned in the social media plan template above, goals are a very important part of any social media plan and will shape the strategy you will follow. Goals can vary from business to business depending on how competition is performing and what the business needs to achieve to turn social media into an important marketing channel. Goals can be any of the following; • Increase audience size • Double conversion rate • Increase traffic (number of clicks to website) • Increase engagement rate (number of comments, shares and likes for every post) • Etc… Step 4: Create a content plan Once goals have been set, the next step is to reverse engineer how much content and what type of content needs to be published and when, in order to achieve these goals. A content plan should include the frequency of posts, the types of posts (video, text, infographic, etc…) the hashtags to be used, the links to promote, the timing of each post as well as the person responsible for executing the plan. Step 5: Track The last step of a strategic social media plan is tracking. Depending on your goals, there are a variety of tools you can use to track your progress. For example, if your main goal is to increase the number of clicks to your website from Twitter, you can use clickmeter.com as a tool to monitor clicks generated from Twitter in general, or from individual tweets. Should your goal be to increase the size of your audience on Facebook, using “Facebook insights” will help you monitor your progress. There are of course many social media tracking tools that are very effective such as buffer.com or sproutsocial.com Remember, a social media plan is never set in stone and evolves as your business goals change and should be adapted based on the results generated. Make sure to follow the social media plan example above and review it on a monthly basis based on your progress and results. Now, knowing your social media platforms, which ones you want to use for your particular target audience is essential. So, that's one of the reasons why we start off with knowing your target audience, because that's really going to dictate a lot of stuff you're going to use for what I call your digital assets. What you're going to focus on is your marketing. Now, social media is a very, very predominant way of doing marketing now, so you can't ignore it. Okay? It doesn't make a difference what industry you're in, you need to have some kind of precedence. It really gives you that credibility. 0:50 Even if you are high-end consulting, or if you are a boutique, or if you are a roofing company, or whatever you are, it doesn't make a difference because what you really need to do is focus in on having social media because it lends that credibility. Okay? Now, these are my four favorite ones that I like to focus in on, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. Okay? Now, which one you choose, maybe all four, or maybe a few of them, it all depends on your target audience. So giving an example, right now at the time of this video, Facebook is good for a slightly older demographic, where Instagram is a slightly younger demographic. 1:30 People on Instagram are a lot more interactive, so even though it might be a younger demographic, you don't want to ignore it. And then Twitter is kind of a mix. People who want to see a fast response and so on, and so you can't really ignore it because it kind of often is a mix of the two depending on the actual niche that you're in. Okay? YouTube, I highly recommend YouTube if you have any kind of comfortability with doing videos, or you can even do like animation videos. At least get that presence, get it out there and the visibility because YouTube has a great search engine on it, and is a great way of also ranking Google when you have YouTube videos if you do them right. Okay? So definitely you want to focus on seeing which one of these is going to be key for your business. Okay? Maybe all four. 2:15 Now, other ones that you can look at for instance are...oops if I spell this right... LinkedIn, then you might have Pinterest, Google+, etc. Okay? There's a lot of other ones you could potentially choose from, those ones it all depends on, again, knowing your target audience and where they're going to be residing. Okay? Pinterest is great for if you have crafts, or if you're having somebody whose more visual. Where as, Google+, well I'm not sure. I use Google+ occasionally but it's not quite as popular anymore, but sometimes you want to use that anyway for social bookmarking and gaining additional presence on there. But it really depends on your target audience. Snapchat for instance, all those, it really depends on your target audience. 3:00 But, on these main four is where you are going to focus. So focus on these four because if your time is limited, or your resources are limited, you want to focus on the ones that really get you results. Now, for consulting and more professional, LinkedIn is great to have a presence. Okay? Because people are going to be searching for it, and it ranks pretty good in Google. So you definitely want to have that LinkedIn presence. You may not want to focus a lot of time on it, depending on your niche, but you definitely want to build it up, get some content out there. As you're creating content, putting it on LinkedIn as well, and at the time of this video the advertising is not the best yet, but in... before you know it, LinkedIn could be a great advertising platform as well. So you definitely do not want to ignore it if you're more of a professional, like a consulting arena. 4:00 So, take a look at your target audience, do a little bit of research on where they end up being, where there's the most time they usually spend. Just do some searches on each of these, see what comes up for different people that are on there. It will kind of give you an idea of what other people are doing, and it will also help you focus on where you want to spend your social media, your time on. Okay? The first thing I explain in the video is what not to do on social media. Don't aggressively sell your products to your friends and followers. Even if you do try it, you will run out of sites on which to post your content pretty quickly, and at that point you will be forced to think harder about how you will promote your business on social media. Now that you know what not to do, let's discuss what might be a fantastic marketing plan for you that is filled with some top strategies. There are two major strategies that you should always keep in mind. The first is that you should use social media to establish yourself as an expert in your business niche. Being seen as an expert will help you gain more trust, clients, and ultimately make more money by growing sales, revenue and profits. You want to make more money and generate more sales, right? If so, then you should definitely position yourself as an expert. The second social media marketing strategy to keep in mind is that you must build an audience. Don't think of people as just visitors whom you must convert into sales right away. Of course, you want to have your social media marketing campaign drive sales. But you will get more sales long-term if you get people engaged and make them into fans who continue to engage with your brand. The more people will engage with your brand, the higher the chance that they will eventually buy something from your business. Once you build large social media channels, what you can then do is leverage them to get publicity and other favors for your business from people who will want to get promotion from your large online presence. This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today.
