According to new findings, it is also the foremost cancer-causing fast food leading to even four types of cancer. They were initially introduced by the German immigrants in the 19th century and gained their popularity soon, so nowadays, they even enjoy an iconic status. The World Health Organization (WHO) released a report suggesting that all processed meats can cause cancer, including the red meat. Hot dogs contain a mixture of pork, beef and chicken. In their production, factories use leftovers from cutting steaks or pork chops and ‘edible’ slaughter by-products, such as animal feet and heads, fatty tissue and skins. During the process, all the ingredients are mixed together. The mixture is enhanced with numerous additives, such as sat, corn syrup, nitrates, large salt quantities, and other chemicals, most of which have been associated with cancer. Institutions such as the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine rank the risks of hot dogs on the same level as those of smoking. Nitrates and nitrites are the most harmful additives used in production of hot dogs. During the process of production, the two aforementioned additives bind with amines on high heat, which results in nitrosamines. Nitrosamines have been directly linked to several types of cancer: Bladder cancer Colon cancer Stomach cancer Pancreatic cancer According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, those who consume only one hot dog a day are at 21% higher risk of colorectal cancer. The sad truth is that even organic hot dogs have nitrite, which is often even higher in content than that in traditional hot dogs. You will be definitely shocked to find out that hot dog, one of the most widely eaten foods, contains extremely harmful substances. Americans consume over 7 billion hot dogs every summer, which makes this food one of the most popular ones. Hot dogs have been introduced in America back in the 19t century by the German immigrants and they have become extremely popular ever since. However, it has been shown that hot dogs have an extremely harmful effect on the overall health. In fact, sausages are highly processed food without any nutritional value, due to the fact that they don’t contain anything organic. They are produced in factories with the help of robotized machines which have the ability to produce over 300.000 hot dogs annually. Hot dogs comprise chicken, beef, and pork meat. However, producers often use “edible” leftovers from steak or pork, which means that hot dogs also contain fatty tissue, skin, feet, and hands. The process goes like this: producers combine the leftovers to create a thick paste. Then, lots of additives, such as nitrites, salt, corn syrup, and MSG (monosodium glutamate) are added, in order to refine the taste. The amount of additives is determined by the area for which hot dogs are produced, as people from different places have different tastes. When it comes to monosodium glutamate and carmine, these flavors are made of dye from the shells of beetles which are afterwards boiled in sodium carbonate. The consumers are rarely aware of the ingredients contained in the sausages, due to the fact that USDA (U.S Department of Agriculture) doesn’t ask the producers to write all additives on the label. According to a research conducted by the Hawaiian University, all processed meats increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 67 percent. In addition to this, nitrites and nitrates are definitely the most detrimental additives found in hot dogs. Even organic hot dogs contain nitrite in high amounts! When these compounds are exposed to high temperature, they combine with amines and result in nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are known as potential cancer-causing chemicals and they are linked to colon, bladder, pancreas, and stomach cancer. Shockingly, only one hot dog on a daily basis can increase the chances of developing colorectal cancer by 21 percent, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research. Carolyn Lammersfeld, a registered dietitian and the vice president of integrative oncology at the Florida-based Cancer Treatment Centers of America, said there are many lifestyle factors that can reduce or increase the risk of developing cancer. “We like to remind people that carrying extra body weight increases risk more than red meat or processed meat,” she said. “This is just sort of one piece in the lifestyle equation for reducing risk.” Lammersfeld, however, said the W.H.O. study was “vindicating” to many health professionals who have long warned of cancer risks from such meats. “It’s certainly aligned with what we tell our patients,” she said. The W.H.O. categorized processed meats in group 1. Items in that group are deemed carcinogenic to humans — the highest cancer-linked designation — such as the pesticide ingredient glyphosate and cigarettes. Although processed meats are included with cigarettes, the WHO’s cancer arm, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), said that doesn’t mean they carry comparable risks. “The classifications reflect the strength of the scientific evidence as to whether the agent causes cancer in humans but do not reflect how strong the effect is on the risk of developing cancer,” the IARC said in an emailed statement. “Comparisons within a category can be misleading … active smoking carries a much higher risk of lung cancer than does air pollution, although both are categorized in group 1.” Processed meats can be carcinogenic to humans for several reasons. Processed meats often have added preservatives called nitrates that can be converted into agents called nitrosamines, a known human carcinogen. In red meats, heme iron, which gives the meat its red color, can be converted into nitrosamines. And when red meats are cooked at high temperatures, other carcinogenic compounds known as heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons can be formed, she said. The W.H.O.’s announcement said it is safe to eat up to 18 ounces of red meat a week, or the equivalent of less than two slices of bacon a day. The group emphasized that it is saying not that any amount of processed meat consumed will lead to the development of cancer but that its consumption should be limited. “For an individual, the risk of developing colorectal cancer because of their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this risk increases with the amount of meat consumed,” Dr. Kurt Straif, the head of the IARC monographs program, said in the WHO news release. “In view of the large number of people who consume processed meat, the global impact on cancer incidence is of public health importance.” A person’s genetic predisposition to certain cancers can also affect how they should regard the warning. “Certainly, if I were someone with a family history of colorectal cancer … I would definitely be heeding these warnings,” Lammersfeld said, adding that as personalized medicine advances, health care professionals will be able to give individuals more specific warnings on the basis of genetic factors. Overall, Lammersfeld said, the WHO designation added to a wide body of evidence that is increasingly pointing to the carcinogenicity of processed and red meats. The W.H.O. said that the IARC working group looked at more than 800 studies investigating associations between dozens of cancers and the consumption of red or processed meats in many countries and populations with diverse diets before assigning the group 1 designation. But whether that evidence and the W.H.O.’s warning are converted into a warning label by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration remains to be seen. “In the United States, the NIH [National Institutes of Health] national toxicology program carries out independent cancer hazard assessments. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) recently urged the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to start requiring a warning label for bacon, ham, hot dogs, and other processed meat and poultry products to inform consumers that eating those foods is associated with an increased risk of cancer of the colon and rectum (colorectal cancer). The warning label would read, "USDA WARNING: Frequent consumption of processed meat products may increase your risk of developing cancer of the colon and rectum. Check out your kitchen and see what is lurking there. Many people have some or all of these nine foods you should never eat again if you want to reduce the chance of an early death. These foods taste better or make meal preparation easier, but they are worse in the long run due to their chemical content or lack of nutritional value. Frozen Meals Preservatives, processed salt and hydrogenated oils are very common in most frozen meals. For that reason, it is better to avoid them and their extreme lack of nutrients. If you are opting for frozen meals, try Amy’s or Organic Bistro – two brands that try to create truly healthy varieties. White Bread Refined flour and white bread are stripped of nutrients and are hard to digest. They also have been bleached and can contain chlorine and bromide that were used for that process. Skip the white bread and go for whole grains that contain vitamins and minerals. White Rice Most nutrients have been stripped from the rice when it is white rice. Brown rice is processed differently, absorbed more slowly and provides a more even energy level. White rice, even the fortified variety, does not provide nearly the same amount of nutrients. Microwaveable Popcorn The corn kernals used for microwave popcorn is genetically modified, and then processed salt and preservatives are added to improve its flavor. Add to that the fact that a chemical called diacetyl can destroy the lungs, and that is found in microwaveable popcorn. Avoid the disease and unhealthy chemicals in the bag and use organic kernals in a kettle instead. Cured Meat Hot dogs, bacon, deli meats and other meats available at the grocery store contain sodium nitrite and other chemical preservatives. These have been linked to both heart disease and cancer. It is better to opt for uncured meats. Energy Bars Energy bars include soy protein, refined sugars and hydrogenated fat, which are all things to avoid. Therefore, even though as a meal replacement it is supposed to help with weight loss, it can actually be bad for you. There are some brands that stick to natural ingredients, like PROBAR, Organic Food Bar and Zing. It still takes caution and some label reading to make sure they are worth consuming and will be healthy alternatives. Soy Milk Almost all non-organic soy is genetically modified and has lost a significant amount of the benefits gained from consuming soy. Hexane is a toxic chemical that can cause birth defects, issues with reproduction and even cancer. Non-fermented soy is high in estrogen and interferes with the natural hormone balance as well. Margarine The common misconception that butter and saturated fats are bad, but the true danger comes with the hydrogenated trans-fat known as margarine. Used in numerous processed foods, margarine is something to avoid. If you want to skip the butter and animal-based fats, opt for coconut oil or olive oil. Diet anything Artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose are known to cause endocrine disruption, neurological issues and gastrointestinal problems. These are ingredients in diet products, along with chemical flavoring agents. These chemicals replace natural fat and other elements removed to reduce calories. A better way to eat is to stick to whole foods and those high in fat that were grown the natural way. Hot dogs are America’s number one treat with more than seven billion of them consumed every summer. They hit the streets in the 19th century when they were introduced by the German immigrants. Soon, they were given an iconic status and became a part of many nations’ eating culture. But when you look at what goes into hot dogs and how they are made, you might be surprised to find out that this much loved food is lurking with health dangers. Hot Dogs are a Health Hazard Frankfurters are nutritionally empty processed foods. There is nothing natural about them and the factories produce them in a highly robotized manner at an astonishing rate of 300,000 hot dogs per hour. Traditionally, hot dogs are made from a mixture of pork, beef and chicken. Leftovers from cutting stakes or pork chops and ‘edible’ slaughter by-products are used. These include fatty tissue, skins, animal feet and heads. These trimmings are grounded and mixed together into a thick paste. To make the sausages taste good, a plethora of additives is added, including excessive amounts of salt, corn syrup, monosodium glutamate (MSG), nitrates, and other chemicals. Flavorings vary depending on where the hot dogs are sold, as people in different regions have different tastes. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) doesn’t require manufacturers to list flavorings on the label, so just about anything goes. Flavorings include the infamous monosodium glutamate (MSG) and carmine – a dye from the shells of small beetles, boiled in ammonia or sodium carbonate. Hot Dogs can Cause Cancer Nitrates and nitrites are the next on the list of problematic additives used in hot dogs. In the presence of high heat they combine with amines in processed meat to form nitrosamines. It’s the nitrosamines that have been linked to cancer – especially colon, bladder, stomach, and pancreas cancer. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, one hot dog a day increases your risk for colorectal cancer by 21%. Even organic hot dogs contain nitrite, sometimes even in higher amounts than the conventional hot dogs. Processed meats in general have been shown to increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 67% in a study by the University of Hawaii. Hot Dogs can Contain Foreign Objects Sometimes, foreign objects are also found in your favorite wurst. The following have been recorded: Band-Aids, glass shards, razor blades, metal fragments, maggots, rat legs, and pieces of eyeballs. The speed of the production allows contaminants to ‘sneak’ into the final product unnoticed, so you can get some nasty surprises. Hot Dogs Contribute to Childhood Obesity Hot dogs are listed among the unhealthy foods that contribute to increasing rates of childhood obesity, which is of course linked to a myriad of health problems. If you think you cannot go without hot dogs, then eat them once in a while and go for brands that: Contain no nitrates. Say 100% beef, or 100% chicken, so that you know no by-products have been used. Contain no MSG, corn syrup, preservatives and additives. Are sold by small, local farmers that produce them on their farms. Best of all, avoid processed meats all together. If you eat meat, make sure it comes from grass-fed, organically and humanly raised animals. And don’t forget to eat plenty of fresh vegetables with it. This disturbing truth about an all-time favorite snack may be forcing food manufacturers to change their processing methods. But can the changes really make a difference? Researchers find that potato chips, among other processed foods, are loaded with the cancer causing chemical, acrylamide (uh-kril-uh-mahyd). The substance forms when carbohydrate-rich foods are cooked at very high temperatures. Some of the worst offenders—Pringles and other potato chips and French fries. Federal regulations limit acrylamide in drinking water to just over one-tenth micrograms per 8-ounce glass. However, a six-ounce serving of French fries can contain 60 micrograms of acrylamide. That's about FIVE HUNDRED times over the allowable limit. Scientists find the amount in potato chips is even more staggering. In some cases, more than NINE HUNDRED times over the legal limit. Such studies prompted the state of California to sue potato chip makers in 2005, citing a failure to warn consumers about the health risks of acrylamide in their products. The Frito-Lay company and several other potato chip manufacturers agreed to a settlement in 2008. The companies pledged to reduce the acrylamide levels in their chips to 275 parts-per-billion by 2011, which is low enough to avoid needing a cancer warning label. But the jury is still out on whether or not manufacturers have truly reached the requirements. A major challenge lies in how the food is made. Since acrylamide is not intentionally added, but rather a byproduct of cooking or processing at temperatures above 212-degrees Fahrenheit, researchers believe that changes in the current manufacturing methods would reduce acrylamide intake by no more than 40 percent . This brings the question--have potato chip makers really succeeded in reducing acrylamide levels to within legal limits? That data has yet to be updated. However researchers do issue another warning—baked potato chips may be worse for you than fried. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration found acrylamide levels in baked chips may be at more than three times the level of acrylamide as regular chips! This comes as name brands such as Pringles and companies like Frito Lay advertise so-called healthier baked varieties of their products. In fact, research suggests that baking processed potatoes at high temperatures may be one of the worst ways to cook them. FDA findings on the name brand Ore Ida may prove the point. A study shows Ore Ida Golden Fries contain about 107 parts-per-billion of acrylamide in the regular fried variety, but the baked version contains nearly 11-HUNDRED parts-per-billion. And if that were not enough, published research also shows dozens more potential toxins form when processed food is heated to high temperatures. In the study published in 2007, scientists concluded that consumers are far less likely to ingest dangerous levels of acrylamide and other carcinogens when eating home-cooked foods compared to industrially-prepared snacks. Still, some potato chip manufacturers are working to improve the image of their products. By the end of 2011, about half of Pepsi's Frito-Lay brand snacks will be reformulated with all-natural ingredients. The switch is part of PepsiCo's master plan to tap into the healthy foods market share. The Wall Street Journal recently reported the company hopes to boost their nutrition business from $10 billion dollars to $30 billion dollars by 2020. Some 60 Frito-Lay brand snacks are scheduled for an all-natural makeover, with the company removing monosodium glutamate—also known as MSG—and replacing it with natural seasonings, such as molasses and paprika. Artificial colors will be replaced with beet juice, purple cabbage and carrots. Nutritionists warn that the reformulated chips still lack true health benefits and that the processing depletes food of valuable micronutrients. They urge consumers to eat foods that are raw or minimally processed to avoid the types of toxic byproducts that come from industrially manufactured snacks. Health care experts agree that cancer, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes have a dietary component. That, with these latest findings on toxins in convenience foods may be causing a shift in consumer demand and altering the direction of food manufacturers in a positive way. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced more than 372,000 pounds of hot dogs and corn dogs from Bar-S Foods are being recalled over listeria concerns. Listeria can cause listeriosis, which can result in aches, fever and stomach issues. No actual bacteria was found in the food and no illnesses have been reported, but the products were still pulled as a precaution due to the company’s past issues with listeria. The department urged consumers who have the potentially affected items to either throw them away or return them. You can go to the USDA website to see which specific products are being recalled. It can even lead to four types of cancer! This popular fast food was originally brought by German immigrants in the 19th century. Its popularity was constantly increasing and it became a major landmark of the 21st century. But, ladies and gentlemen, when you look at what goes into hot dogs and how they are made, you might be surprised to find out that this much loved food is lurking with health dangers. First of all, you should know that hot dogs are nutritionally empty processed foods. There is nothing natural about them and the factories produce them in a highly robotized manner at an astonishing rate of 300,000 hot dogs per hour. In the old (traditional) way, hot dogs are made from a mixture of pork, beef and chicken. Leftovers from cutting steaks or pork chops and ‘edible’ slaughter by-products are used. These include fatty tissue, skins, animal feet and heads. After that, these leftovers are grounded and mixed together into a thick paste. To make the sausages taste good, a plethora of additives is added, including excessive amounts of salt, corn syrup, monosodium glutamate (M S G), nitrates, and other chemicals. As we said, the manufacturers add different additives and flavorings, and the flavorings vary depending on where the hot dogs are sold, as people in different regions have different tastes. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) doesn’t require manufacturers to list flavorings on the label, so just about anything goes. Flavorings include the infamous monosodium glutamate (MSG) and carmine – a dye from the shells of small beetles, boiled in ammonia or sodium carbonate. As we mentioned before, this cancer-causing food can lead to four types of cancer. The experts warn that nitrates and nitrites are the next on the list of problematic additives used in hot dogs. How this works – well, in the presence of high heat, they combine with amines in processed meat to form nitrosamines. It’s the nitrosamines that have been linked to cancer – especially colon, bladder, stomach, and pancreas cancer. According to a study, conducted by the American Institute for Cancer Research, the experts warn that just one hot dog a day increases your risk for colorectal cancer by 21%. Even organic hot dogs contain nitrite, sometimes even in higher amounts than the conventional hot dogs. Processed meats in general have been shown to increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 67% in a study by the University of Hawaii.

Turns out even veggie dogs aren't immune to problems, according to a new report from Clear Food, a company that uses genetic testing to find out what exactly is in foods. "Of the 345 hot dogs and sausages Clear Food analyzed for this report, 14.4% were problematic in some way," according to the report. "Problems included substitutions and hygienic issues. Substitution occurs when ingredients are added that do not show up on the label. Hygienic issues occur when some sort of non-harmful contaminant is introduced to the hot dog, in most cases, human DNA."

The statement “everything causes cancer” has become a popular hyperbole, and one that some people use as rhetorical fodder to excuse their own dietary and lifestyle failures, particularly as they pertain to cancer risk. But the truth of the matter is that many common food items have, indeed, been scientifically shown to increase cancer risk, and some of them substantially. Here are 10 of the most unhealthy, cancer-causing foods that you should never eat again: 1) Genetically-modified organisms (GMOs). It goes without saying that GMOs have no legitimate place in any cancer-free diet, especially now that both GMOs and the chemicals used to grow them have been shown to cause rapid tumor growth. But GMOs are everywhere, including in most food derivatives made from conventional corn, soybeans, and canola. However, you can avoid them by sticking with certified organic, certified non-GMO verified, and locally-grown foods that are produced naturally without biotechnology (http://www.naturalnews.com). 2) Processed meats. Most processed meat products, including lunch meats, bacon, sausage, and hot dogs, contain chemical preservatives that make them appear fresh and appealing, but that can also cause cancer. Fructose-rich sweeteners like high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) are particularly offensive, ascancer cells have been shown to quickly and easily metabolize them in order to proliferate. And since cookies, cakes, pies, sodas, juices, sauces, cereals, and many other popular, mostly processed, food items are loaded with HFCS and other refined sugars, this helps explain why cancer rates are on the rise these days. 8) Conventional apples, grapes, and other ‘dirty’ fruits. Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs): The rapidly growing industry of genetically modified crops are infiltrating our food supply at an alarming rate. More than 90% of our corn and soy are now genetically modified. This fairly new practice is the source of many debates. Experts agree that adequate testing was not done before GMO foods were added to the ingredient listing of thousands of products. In other words, no one – including the growers and manufacturers of GMO foods – knows the long-term effect they will have on human health. Look for GMO-free labels whenever possible or buy organic (which always means a product is not genetically modified). Microwave Popcorn: From the chemically-lined bag to the actual contents, microwave popcorn is at the center of lung cancer debates around the world. Not only are the kernels and oil likely GMO (which the manufacturer does not have to disclose) unless organic, the fumes released from artificial butter flavoring contain diacetyl, which is toxic to humans. Make your own organic popcorn the old-fashioned way – it tastes better, doesn’t release toxic fumes, and is a healthier choice for you. Canned Goods: Most cans are lined with a product called bisphenol-A (BPA), which has been shown to genetically alter the brain cells of rats. Many plastic goods, thermal paper, water lines, and many dental composites also contain BPA. Help protect your DNA by sticking to fresh or frozen vegetables that have no added ingredients for your family’s table! These are better for you and available year-round. Grilled Red Meat: While grilled food can taste delicious, scientists have discovered that preparing meats in this way – especially processed meats like hot dogs – releases a carcinogen called heterocyclic aromatic amines. When you grill red meat to the point of well-done, it changes the chemical and molecular structure of the meat. You’re better off baking, broiling, or preparing meat in a skillet than on the grill. Refined Sugar: The biggest cancer causing food (by far) is high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and other refined sugars. Even brown sugar is highly refined white sugar with some of the removed molasses added back in for flavor and color. Refined sugars (and foods made with them) are the source of major insulin spikes and feed the growth of cancer cells. Since the majority of the sugar supply in the U.S. is made using genetically modified (GMO) sugar beets, a healthier option is organic honey, coconut sugar, or maple sugar. Now that oncologists are using diabetes medication to fight cancer cells, there’s no doubt (finally) that those mutated cancer cells love sugar. Salted, Pickled, and Smoked Foods: These products typically contain preservatives, such as nitrates, which are intended to prolong shelf life. The additives used in processed foods can accumulate in your body over time. Eventually, such toxins cause damage at the cellular level and lead to diseases like cancer. When smoked foods are cooked at high temperatures, the nitrates are converted to the much more dangerous nitrites. Soda and Carbonated Beverages: Sodas have been at the center of the health debate for two decades as a major cancer causing food. Filled with high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), dyes, and a host of other chemicals, they are very bad for every aspect of your health. They provide zero nutritional value and rob your body of the nutrients you get from other foods. Adding “diet” to the label means you’re also likely consuming aspartame – which is no better than rat poison to human cells. White Flour: When flour is refined, all nutritional value is removed. Then it’s bleached with chlorine gas to make it more appealing to consumers. The glycemic index for white flour is very high – meaning it spikes your insulin levels without providing nutritional fuel. Carbohydrates are converted to sugars by your body, so excessive products that contain white flour can lead to increased insulin resistance. Simple sugars (like refined carbohydrates) are the preferred fuel source for cancer. Farmed Fish: Commercial fish farming involves raising an incredible number of fish (such as salmon), in a crowded environment. More than 60% of the salmon consumed in the United States comes from a farming operation where they are treated with antibiotics, pesticides, and other carcinogenic chemicals to try and control the bacterial, viral, and parasitic outbreaks that result from cramming so many fish in a small space. Farmed fish also don’t have as much omega-3 as wild salmon. Hydrogenated Oils: Vegetable oils are chemically extracted from their source, chemically treated, and more chemicals are added to change the smell and taste. They’re packed with unhealthy omega-6 fats (that Americans already consume way too much of) and have been proven to alter the structure of our cell membranes.

No single cause of cancer has yet been found. Factors contributing to cancerous changes are either originating within the body or external, environmental. Numerous causes of this disease can be linked to chemicals, insecticides, hereditary factors, tobacco and food. The most-diagnosed cancers in men are lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach and liver. For women, breast, colorectal, lung, cervix and stomach. Constant eating of cancer-causing foods is one of the greatest exposures to this dreaded disease. Avoiding these foods, at all costs, can help prevent the risk of developing several types of cancer. 1) Processed Meat Meats that have been preserved by smoking, curing or salting contain nitrite preservatives which cause human cells to become cancerous. Eating processed meat every day increases the risk of colorectal cancer by almost 20%. Limit consumption of hot dogs, bacon, sausages and deli meat that has been treated to preserve or flavor it. 2) Farm-Raised Fish Farmed fish are raised in crowded situations and are treated with antibiotics to help prevent infections. Salmon that is farm-raised contains a higher concentration of PCB chemicals, which are known to cause a variety of types of cancer. Compared to wild fish, farmed-raised fish contain almost 20% less protein and lower levels of Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s help reduce inflammation in the body which is linked to a variety of cancers. 3) Microwave Popcorn When the bags of microwave popcorn are heated they release particles that may be associated with health risks. These chemicals fuse into the popcorn you eat and have been associated with an increased risk of certain cancers, including liver, lung and prostate. Select air-popped variety or pop the kernels yourself in a pan or pressure cooker. 4) Hydrogenated Oils The oils that have been chemically changed from a room-temperature liquid state into solid, results in more trans fats. The hydrogenation process has frequently shown to induce many forms of cancer, including colon and breast. Trans fats interfere with the body's normal metabolism of nutrients, leading to widespread chronic diseases and a decrease in overall immunity. 5) Refined Sugar High amounts of refined sugar can cause destruction to your overall health. Apart from leading to heart problems, refined sugar contributes to obesity, a well-known cause of cancer. Excess body fat has shown to be connected with breast, colon, kidney and pancreatic cancers. 6) Artificial Sweeteners Sugar substitutes contain synthetic chemicals that are simply not healthy for the body. Sweeteners containing sucralose, aspartame or saccharin, show to contribute to leukemia, lymphoma and bladder cancer. If you really must satisfy your sweet tooth. use plant-based stevia, a natural and healthy alternative. 7) Canned Foods Limiting consumption of canned foods reduces your exposure to BPAs. Many food cans are coated inside with bisphenol-A, a chemical that is connected with numerous illnesses, including breast and prostate cancers. Furthermore, when food is manufactured and canned, the nutrients in the food is lost. Undoubtedly, fresh food is better than canned food. 8) Alcohol Abuse Besides loosing your driver's license and your sanity, chronic heavy drinking has been linked to liver, colon, throat, larynx, stomach, pancreas and mouth cancers. Whether it's wine, beer or spirits, excess alcohol can damage DNA and proteins by metabolizing toxic chemicals linked to carcinogens. 9) GMOs (Genetically Modified Foods) Foreign genetic material into foods has shown to cause widespread organ damage, liver and kidney problems, and premature death. GM crops are grown with huge amounts of toxic chemicals that are transferred into our bloodstream and double the risk of cancer and hormonal disruption. 10) Grilled Red Meat Studies reveal that colon cancer is more common among people who consume the most red meat. High-temperature cooking methods, to the point of well-done, produce a type of carcinogenic chemical that changes the molecular structure of the meat. GENEVA — A report released Monday by a branch of the World Health Organization concluded that eating processed meat such as bacon, hot dogs and ham increases the risk of colon cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer's report comes after a panel of experts reviewed years of investigation into the links between processed meat and cancer. But even then the panel's conclusion was not unanimous, with only 15 of 22 members agreeing with the conclusions, while the other 7 either disagreed or abstained. The report means that processed meat joins alcohol, cigarettes, ionizing radiation and diesel engine fumes in the agency's Group 1 category, meaning there is sufficient evidence to suggest that it causes cancer. But with no clear guidelines given and confusion reigning over how much processed meat is safe to eat, many people, especially those in meat loving countries, will view the findings as the latest attack on their individual freedoms. GMO: 10 Foods you didn't know were Genetically Modified Organisms! Developed through conventional plant breeding, Canola was developed by breeding rapeseed, which has been in use for millennia, and was even used as fuel by many ancient civilizations. The first Genetically Modified version was originally bred by University of Manitoba, Canada by Keith Downey and Baldur R. Stefansson during the 1970s. That strain was called Roundup Ready canola, developed to have a tolerance to glyphosate. This was done by introducing two genes, the first called Agrobacterium, which is a common soil bacterium, with a gene from Ochrobactiurm antroi strain LBAA… which honestly won’t mean much to most of us. Surprisingly, a whopping 90% of the U.S canola crop is genetically modified. Number 9: Potatoes. Nearly all of us will be familiar with the hardy potato that has been a stable part of diets for thousands of years, but did you know some strains have been genetically modified? The potato was first domesticated in modern-day southern Peru in between 8000 and 5000BCE. It was first introduced to Europe following the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire and since then it has been introduced to all corners of the world. An estimated 382 tons of potatoes were produced in 2014 with the People’s Republic of China producing the most at 95.5 million tons. In recent years genetic researchers have produced several genetically modified varieties of potatoes. The New Leaf potato was genetically modified to resist attacks from the Colorado potato beetle, but was unsuccessful in making a dent in the market so sales were discontinued in 2001. In more recent years, the USDA approved a modified potato, the Innate potato, which contains genetic modifications that reduced or prevented bruising. Although these have gone into circulation, the Food and Water Watch petitioned McDonald’s, a major consumer of potatoes, to not use the new strain of potato. Thankfully, McDonald’s agreed. So if you eat McDonald’s fries, at least you don’t need to worry about consuming this particular GM food! Number 8: Eggplant. Eggplant, also known as aubergine, has been cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since prehistory. Strangely, the plant has also played a role in Italian and Egyptian folklore. In the 13th century Italy and 19th century Egypt, the plant was liked to cause or increased levels of insanity amongst the populace. The genetically modified version of the eggplant is also known as Bt Brinjal, and was created by inserting crystal protein gene taken from bacterium Becillus thuringiensis to make it resistant to pests. It works by enabling the plant to produce a toxin that kills the worms that devastate crops. This strain of the eggplant is only cultivated in Bangladesh, but as it is only a recent phenomenon it is too early to judge its success. Number 7: Papaya Papaya is native to Mexico and northern South America, but has since been introduced to Florida, California, Hawaii and other tropical and subtropical regions like India. It turns out that only the female plants are used for cultivation, though, as the male plants provide poorer quality fruit. In 2014 India produce 44% of the world’s total estimated at 12.7 million tons – which is a lot of papaya. But it hasn’t been an easy ride for the plant. Papaya production was hit with a deadly virus that nearly wiped out the entire world crop. The virus, known as papaya ringspot, first hit the crop in Hawaii in the 1940s and within 50 years the virus had spread to nearly every area that grew the crop. Regardless of whether you agree with the GM food industry, if it wasn’t for the Hawaiian born scientist, Dennis Gonsalves, we wouldn’t be able to feast on the delicious fruit today. His creation, known as the Rainbow papaya, was designed to be resistant to the virus, and has ensured a stable and sustainable income for the people of Hawaii and other places it’s grown. It clear that the genetically modified papaya has helped ensure its continued availability today. So…maybe not all GM foods are bad.
