So first off, let's take a look at… What is insulin? Insulin is a hormone that's produced by the pancreas, that helps turn sugars from carbohydrates to energy. It also allows the body to store glucose for future use. The muscles and liver store the sugars as glycogen, which causes muscle cells to expand. Likewise, fat cells store the sugar as triglycerides and may expand as well. Now, what is insulin sensitivity, and insulin resistance. Insulin sensitivity is how receptive the body is to the insulin it produces. When the body is properly sensitive to insulin, it uses that insulin produced and effectively removes it from the bloodstream, making energy and storing glucose for later. A healthy body is sensitive to insulin, which means it needs to make less insulin to stay healthy. Better yet, being more insulin sensitive allows the body to utilize carbohydrates properly for more energy, building muscle, and will also help the body store less fat. What's even better, is that greater insulin sensitivity is going to lead to higher T levels in men. Now what are some signs that a person might have poor insulin sensitivity? Or have developed insulin resistance? Higher insulin levels can cause weight gain, higher insulin levels can cause aging, higher insulin levels can cause reduced T, higher insulin levels increases cravings for junk foods, and also leads to blood pressure issues. With all of this in mind, for anyone who feels as though they're one of those people who is constantly riding the blood sugar roller coaster, with blood sugar all over the place, depending on what you eat, when you eat, and you get hangry and get crazy when they don't have food, For everyone who needs help with blood sugar control and needs to increase their insulin sensitivity naturally, and for the good people out there who don't want to go take drugs to achieve this, I've got 3 natural compounds to use today to simply, and quickly increase insulin sensitivity naturally and get control over those cravings once again. Now the first thing is what's known as berberine. Now berberine is an alkaloid extract taken from various plants and it's been used in traditional chinese medicine for centuries. Some of the benefits of berberine include, anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic effects, improved intestinal health, improved cholesterol numbers, increased exercise performance, and decreased blood pressure. The absence of disease does not equal the presence of health. Many patients with Alzheimer’s are underweight. There could be metabolic dysfunction. Most of us over consume grains. Studies continue to show that one of the best ways to stay insulin sensitive is by eating low carb, high fiber, and high healthy fat. Over the past century, there has been a thousand-fold increase in omega 6 consumption. Our brains are downstream from many inflammatory processes. 04:39 Elevated Blood Sugar’s Impact upon the Brain: The amyloid hypothesis focuses on the plaque buildup in the brain as the cause of Alzheimer’s and this is the focus of pharmaceutical research for a cure. Decades of research is indicating that this is the wrong road. There is little correlation between amyloid load and cognitive ability. One of the earliest measureable features in the Alzheimer’s brain is impaired glucose metabolism. It is what characterizes type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance is the inability of cells to let glucose enter for use by the mitochondria for fuel. Research shows that young people, carriers of the APOE-ε4 allele, the gene most associated with risk (not determination) for Alzheimer’s disease; decades before symptoms appear there is impaired glucose usage in their brains. People who have Alzheimer’s disease, regardless of whether they have the APOE-ε4 allele, 100% of them have insulin resistance in their brains. Research shows that insulin resistance in the body predicts amyloid buildup in the brain. 08:28 Minimizing Risk for Diabetes and Alzheimer’s: Having type 2 diabetes doubles our risk for Alzheimer’s disease. The brain is fed blood by 400 miles of microvasculature. What is good for the heart and good for the metabolism is good for the brain. Changes begin decades before the first symptom, like many chronic diseases. 10:01 Diet and Minimizing Risk: The sugar, the refined carbohydrates, the chronic elevations of blood sugar, we are too sedentary and we are not eating enough vegetables. Carbohydrate consumption should be titrated according to our activities. Think of them as performance enhancing drugs. Have your carbohydrates after your workout. Recently published is a 6 month study of fish oil on executive function, where they measured insulin and total grey matter volume in the brain. Those who had lower levels of fasting insulin had greater volume of grey matter in their brains. Alzheimer’s is characterized by dramatic brain shrinkage. 13:12 Metabolic Flexibility: In the morning, we are at our most insulin sensitive and cortisol is high. Insulin is the storage hormone and cortisol liberates fuels for the body to use. We have evolved to use sugar or fat for fuel. When you become insulin resistant, you lose that flexibility. When you burn sugar, you cannot go very long between meals. A higher fat diet allows you to go longer without feeling hungry. Intermittent fasting is another means to induce a state of acute physiologic stress. It does many of the same things that exercise does. It boosts BDNF in the brain that are depleted in Alzheimer’s disease and depression. It has an epigenetic effect, turning on certain genes that are involved in reparative and protective mechanisms. We would need to be healthy enough to do this. It is not advisable for insulin dependent diabetics. Obesity is a condition of excess fat accumulation in adipocytes where the person is literally stuck in storage mode diverting a disproportionate amount of calories into fat cells as opposed to oxidation. Thus it is more productive to think of obesity as a problem in 'energy flow' rather than energy expenditure (i.e., calories in, calories out). The most efficient approach to accelerate the body's ability to access and burn body fat is to restrict dietary carbohydrate while increasing fat intake for a period of several weeks, after which fatty acids and ketones become the primary fuel at rest and during submaximal exercise. The coordinated set of metabolic adaptations that ensure proper inter-organ fuel supply in the face of low carbohydrate availability is referred to as keto- adaptation. This unique metabolic state has recently been shown to have widespread and profound therapeutic and performance-enhancing effects ranging from reversing type 2 diabetes to shrinking tumors to allowing ultra-endurance runners to set course records. This presentation will discuss the physiologic effects of very low carbohydrate diets with an emphasis on their unique effects on both features of metabolic syndrome and human performance. Dr. Jeff Volek is a Full Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Connecticut where he teaches and leads a research team that explores the physiologic impact of various dietary and exercise regimens and nutritional supplements. Dr. Volek's most significant line of work has been a series of studies aimed at better understanding what constitutes a well formulated low carbohydrate diet and the physiological impact on obesity, body composition, fatty acid composition and lipoprotein metabolism, gut micro-biome, adaptations to training and overall metabolic health. This line of work has shown profound effects of ketogenic diets on overall health and well-being, as well as peak performance. He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed manuscripts, many of which were longitudinal interventions of carbohydrate restricted diets. Specific to low carbohydrate diets, Dr. Volek has authored/co-authored 4 books, 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts and reviews, and delivered over 100 invited presentations on low carbohydrate diets in half a dozen countries at scientific and industry meetings. Through more than a decade of research dedicated to better understanding low carbohydrate diets, Dr. Volek has accumulated an enormous amount of laboratory and clinical data on how carbohydrate restricted diets affects human physiology, and acquired a unique knowledge pertaining to the individualization and formulation of safe, effective and sustainable low carbohydrate diets.
