Another quick unboxing video, this time of a Vantec NexStar 3 External Enclosure for any 3.5" SATA hard drive up to a maximum capacity of 3TB. This external enclosure has both eSATA 3Gbps and USB 3.0 ports, and is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1. Using both eSATA and USB 3.0 at the same time may cause it to select one over the other, as I've read online, so just choose one or the other, and you're good to go. This is the enclosure only, and has no hard drive within it, so you'll need to add a hard drive of your own.
When the blue light is solid, it means the enclosure is turned on and powered up. When the blue light is blinking, it means there is activity on the hard drive, such as reading and/or writing of files.
Since I mentioned I got this for use with a hard drive for the AVerMedia Game Capture HD II, I feel it necessary to mention here that after having tried using a hard drive in it, then contacting AVerMedia themselves, I found that the Game Capture HD II does not support 3.5" hard drives. So if you're thinking of getting this enclosure with a 3.5" hard drive to go with it, I highly suggest rethinking and changing to a 2.5" hard drive, because 3.5" hard drives, no matter the external enclosure, are not supported by the AVerMedia Game Capture HD II.
WINDOWS USERS, PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
If you plug this enclosure into your system while it is turned on, you will need to either restart your computer, or follow the instructions below to get your system to recognize the enclosure and hard drive you put in it.
To get Windows to recognize the Vantec NexStar 3 (steps for Windows 7 only):
1.) While the enclosure is on and hooked up, open the Start menu
2.) Search for "Device Manager" and launch it
3.) Right-click "Computer" and select "Scan for hardware changes"
4.) Wait for Windows to install the generic driver to support the enclosure, then you're good to go
You can also turn the enclosure off while using eSATA, but you'll want to run another scan for hardware changes using the steps above so that Windows knows the area is no longer available.
