Dr Lubitz discusses Allergic Asthma

My 6 year old is sniffing and clearing his throat. Allergy medicine won't help. What can I do?
You mentioned that you have a 6 year old son who's been sniffing a lot and clearing his throat frequently, and you're noticing a little bit of a chest rattle. You tried allergy medication, because you thought maybe that was the problem and the reason behind the extra secretions, and it's not helping. I suggest calling your pediatrician and letting them know about your observations and concerns, of things that you've tried. And after asking you more questions, talking with your son, and performing an exam, they'll decide if further investigation or medical attention is necessary for it. If you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.

Atlanta Top Allergist Dr Mark Livezey Discusses Allergy Testing & Allergy Shots
http://www.allergyatlanta.com/patients/allergy-testing-2/ Allergy & Asthma Consultants, P.C. "Big Enough to Cure, Small Enough to Care" ATLANTA OFFICE 5555 Peachtree-Dunwoody Rd NE, Suite 325 Atlanta, GA 30342 Allergy Testing by Atlanta's Top Allergists As allergy specialists in Atlanta, we are often asked to compare skin testing vs. lab testing for determining a patient's allergic status. Today, while the results correlate well, most allergists prefer skin testing, as it is more accurate and sensitive in detecting allergic disease. While somewhat more uncomfortable, results are available quickly, and quite obvious and reinforcing to the patient. Allergens tested can be easily modified for relevance to the patient, and the geographic region. With regard to treatment, allergy shots have been used for about a century, and regarded as "disease modifying" in that they redirect the immune system away from the allergic response, toward the protective, or non-allergic. The initial frequency of shots and mild discomfort are off-putting to some, but will generally provide decades of benefit. In recent years, it has been shown that certain oral regimens can reduce symptoms to some extent, but available treatments are very limited, with FDA approval at this time including only ragweed and northern grasses. With a few other additions anticipated in the future. Make an appointment, we'd be happy to review the options with you. Rider Drug Ad - Asthma
Rider Drug (Kirksville, MO) ad for August 2008. During this time of year, the most frequent question I get is asked is "How do I know if my asthma inhalder is full or empty?" Inhalers have gotten smaller and lighter, which makes telling the difference between a full and empty inhaler difficult. Here's an easy tip that works with most inhalers. Fill a glass with water. Remove the canister from the plastic mouthpiece and drop it in the water. If it floats it's probably empty, if it sinks it's full. All we need is a colorful straw and a paper umbrella! If you're in charge of your family's health, count on Rider Drug.

Top Atlanta Allergy Dr Glen Nadal on Hives in Atlanta
http://www.allergyatlanta.com/conditions/skin-allergies/ Allergy & Asthma Consultants, P.C. "Big Enough to Cure, Small Enough to Care" ATLANTA OFFICE 5555 Peachtree-Dunwoody Rd NE, Suite 325 Atlanta, GA 30342 Dr Glen L Nadel on Hives Hives (Urticaria) are a very common problem that we see. About 20 percent of the population has hives at some point in their lifetime. Hives are the presence of "welts" that are raised from the skin and are very itchy in character. There are multiple triggers for hives. Food allergy can cause it if you are allergic to a specific food such as peanuts, nuts, shellfish, milk, or egg. We also look for the presence of medications that may cause hives. The most common medications that cause hives are antibiotics and non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin, advil or aleve. Contact with certain inhalants, such as animal dander, can cause hives, specifically if an animal licks you and you develop hives than that may be the cause for your problem. In addition, rarely, adults can have contact allergy to chemicals such as those present in makeups, sunscreens, shampoos or other chemicals that may cause hives. Hives can very rarely be due to illness, such as thyroid problems. Finally, hives can be what we call "idiopathic" in character. Idiopathic hives means that we do not know the cause for them, but we've looked at it and evaluated it and decided that all of the other causes are not present. This is a good diagnosis, as you generally do not want to have any of the other causes. Treatment of hives includes the use of medications and avoidance of any triggering factors -- such as the food or chemical that may trigger them. Generally, treatment of hives is very successful. Top Atlanta Allergy Doctor Dr Glen L Nadel discusses Hay Fever in Atlanta, Georgia
http://www.allergyatlanta.com/conditions/allergic-rhinitis-hay-fever/ Allergy & Asthma Consultants, P.C. "Big Enough to Cure, Small Enough to Care" ATLANTA OFFICE 5555 Peachtree-Dunwoody Rd NE, Suite 325 Atlanta, GA 30342 Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever) Diagnosis & Treatment by Atlanta's Top Allergists Hay fever is one of the most common problems we see. We also call it 'allergic rhinitis.' It involves the presence of allergic antibodies either year round, or seasonal antigens. Year-round antigens would be dust mites, molds, or animals; while the seasonal antigens would be pollens, such as tree pollen, or fall weed pollens (like ragweed pollen). When you are exposed to the antigen that you are allergic to, it causes the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators. These chemicals cause you to sneeze, get stuffy or runny nose. The best way to deal with allergic rhinitis is to first identify the cause of the problem. We skin test to find exactly what things trigger you. The treatment would include avoidance of anything that would trigger your symptoms and the use of medications, and if your symptoms are severe enough, the use of allergy shots. The treatment of allergic rhinitis is usually very successful. Asthma, Medications, and Child Care Safety: A Parent's Story
Jessika Holmes is a mom who works full time as a legal assistant, and her 2 1/2 year old son requires daily asthma medications. She is confident that her son's medications will be safely administered in his child care setting, but a recent report by the Child Health and Development Institute of Connecticut suggests that the health and safety of children in CT child care programs may merit improvement--particularly in best practices for medication administration. They call for training of child care providers in medication administration, and funding for nurse consultants to guide health education in child care settings.

Atlanta: Should I see an ENT or Allergist for Sinus Problems?
http://www.allergyatlanta.com/allergist-ear-nose-throat-ent-specialist/ ATLANTA ALLERGIST OR ENT? How do you determine whether you should see an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist (ENT) or an Allergy Specialist (allergist)? An ENT has training to deal with any problems in your ears, nose and throat; and aren’t those parts of your body affected most when allergy symptoms flare? Should you only see an allergist during peak allergy season in the spring and fall, and an ENT other times of the year? What is the best solution to maintain your optimum health? EAR, NOSE AND THROAT (ENT) SPECIALISTS Ear, Nose and Throat doctors are surgeons whose primary focus is on structural issues and complexities that can be corrected primarily through surgery. They are trained to look for bone and cartilage issues first, then correct the problems with surgery. Patients are usually referred to an ENT specialist when they are having difficulty with a sore throat, having trouble hearing or having difficulty breathing through the nose. The most common surgery performed by an ENT is the tonsillectomy, a procedure where the surgeon removes infected tonsils and adenoids. ALLERGIES ARE OFTEN THE SOURCE OF SINUS PROBLEMS Often, surgeries can be avoided simply because ear, nose and throat problems are caused by allergies. Studies show that more than 50 percent of sinus problems are allergy-related, with the rest caused by a combination of allergy and non-allergy related symptoms. Many ENTs offer allergy testing because of the prevalence of allergies, particularly in Atlanta. Atlanta is one of the worst cities for allergies in the USA. TRAINING: ENT VS ALLERGIST There’s a probability that an ENT has received fewer than two weeks of allergy training! The training would have to cover a variety of allergens, allergic reactions, allergy testing, how to interpret test results, and the most likely treatment for the patient. ENT specialists do receive accreditation, but primarily from organizations in the field of ENT. Board certified allergists receive two years of focused training (not two weeks) in the diagnosis, treatment and management of all forms of allergies and asthma. The allergist receives this specialized training in addition to internal medicine and/or pediatrician accreditation. Obviously, an allergist’s primary focus and expertise is on allergies. You simply can’t receive that level of expertise from even the best ENT. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM OUR BOARD CERTIFIED ALLERGISTS Our allergists typically perform the following procedures to help determine the best course of treatment: ★ A complete medical and allergy history, including allergy skin tests ★ Professionally and properly conducted allergy skin tests ★ More accurate interpretation of those skin test results ★ A detailed and thorough treatment plan which may include avoidance (of allergy triggers), medication or immunotherapy WHY SEE AN ALLERGIST SPECIALIST BEFORE AN ENT As we said, the underlying causes of sinus problems and their related symptoms are frequently allergies, so you should always start with an allergist. If the allergy specialist determines that you have structural problems in addition to, or instead of allergies, we’ll refer to you an ENT for additional treatment. ALLERGY & ASTHMA CONSULTANTS: TOP ATLANTA ALLERGY SPECIALISTS Allergy & Asthma Consultants staff physicians are Board Certified in allergy and immunology. They have received the most thorough training and have more than 30 years experience each in diagnosis and treatment of allergic disease. “Big Enough to Cure, Small Enough to Care” is more than a slogan. How to Determine and Deal With Food Allergies
http://www.DivineElements.ca  1-604-568-3735 Mark: Hi, it’s Mark Bossert from Top Local Lead Generation. we’re here with Dr. Nicholas Jensen, he’s a Naturopath in Vancouver BC. How’re you doing today, doc? Dr. Nicholas: Great Mark, thanks for having me again. I’m doing fantastic.. how’re you today? Mark: I’m good. So we’re going to talk about food allergies, how to determine and deal with them. Si guess the first question really out of that is how do you know whether it is a food allergy that’s got you not feeling particularly great? Dr. Nicholas: I guess, this conversation started with the last talk we did regarding inflammation and obviously the topic of food sensitivity has come up. So how do you know really if you’re dealing with them? There are only a few things that happen throughout each and every day where you’re having a direct influence on your health. I mean, we’re bombarded with all sorts of environmental influences, whether it’s friends, family or stresses with work or whatever, which obviously all play a huge role in the health of the body, but one thing that is so consistent is what we put into our bodies every single day. When we start to take a closer look at how we’re feeling after each meal, over time we just get used to a new normal. So what we really want to do is take a step back and get a clearer look at the food that we’re eating and there’s all sorts of ways to find out if there’s a specific allergy or sensitivity going on. So is this a new topic, do you feel like or is this something you’ve heard of Mark? Mark: Well sure, you know people talk about it a lot our son had a lot of, we self diagnosed, issues around all kinds of foods and so for a long time we were vegans and we followed a pretty strict diet because it really helped with our son’s growing up period and then as he got older, it seemed like his immune system was able to deal with a lot more stuff. He’s not a vegetarian, he eats whatever he wants and we’ve continued on with being vegetarian for the last 28 years. So it’s something I personally know, but I don’t have the background that you do so that’s where I’m interested in, well there’s the anecdotal stuff but then how do you guys know and pinpoint when you’re actually testing someone. What are the tests that you use? Dr. Nicholas: When we’re doing the intake with a patient, we are addressing what are you putting into your body on a regular basis and for most people we would start to look into the food sensitivity picture when there is an obvious imbalance in the digestive process. This can be something that happens early on in life, people just go through life and deal with it - they just used to a new normal; or they decide to do something about it. In the western medical system everything is talked about with regards to allergy and the word sensitivity is a term that gives medical doctors and GP’s a shiver down their spine because it’s typically something that is not discussed and it’s not something they have experience with dealing. So many things get diagnosed as mood disorders, or chronic fatigue, or chronic migraine headaches, or heartburn, insomnia, hormonal imbalance… all these things get diagnosed under different ideas and the problem is because we’re just looking at the symptomatic picture. So if we take a step back looking what’s the bigger picture, what’s the underlying thing that you’re doing on a daily basis that’s possibly causing problems, now we’re getting somewhere. So what we do is: we’ll do a blood test - we do a blood draw at the clinic and send it off to the lab - the lab is reading something called an IGG which is basically an antibody that reads high or low when introduced to a certain food item. For a particular food item, if your immune system is reacting to it, the IGG levels will be really high and could be moderate or mild depending on what it is you’re eating a lot of or depending on what your immune system does’t like. So it’s quite different from an allergy, and to really separate the two - an allergy is an immediate reaction that happens in the body. It’s usually upper respiratory in nature, sinuses, nose, sometimes it can be difficulty breathing or asthma - so it’s usually the upper respiratory tract, can also be headaches and things too. The thing with allergies though, is it’s a short time frame - comes on strong usually and then it dissipates fairly quickly through the body, possibly within 24 hours at the most 48 hours.

Your Home's Air Quality & Family's Health
A person’s home is their sanctuary and regardless of whether it’s mansion or an average-sized single family home, condo, duplex or apartment, it should provide a healthy indoor environment for everyone who lives there. Unfortunately, many homes have indoor pollutants that could cause health concerns or aggravate medical conditions that people already have. These pollutants could be coming from chemicals, gases, microorganisms and other living things as well as from additional sources. According to the U.S. Environmental Protections Agency (EPA), “Some pollutants cause health problems such as sore eyes, burning in the nose and throat, headaches, or fatigue. Other pollutants cause or worsen allergies, respiratory illnesses (such as asthma), heart disease, cancer, and other serious long-term conditions. Sometimes individual pollutants at high concentrations, such as carbon monoxide, cause death.” There are a number of common indoor pollutants that people should be aware so that they can minimize exposure risks. They include the following: • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as formaldehyde, are chemicals found in some household products, building materials and furnishings. VOCs evaporate into the air by off-gassing from materials, when the products containing them are used or sometimes even when these products are stored. • Radon is a radioactive gas that is formed in the soil and can enter indoors through cracks and openings in floors and walls that are in contact with the ground. It is considered to be a leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers. • Secondhand smoke comes from burning tobacco products and can cause cancer and serious respiratory illnesses. • Combustion pollutants are gases or particles that come from burning materials. In homes, the major source of combustion pollutants are improperly vented or unvented fuel-burning appliances such as space heaters, woodstoves, gas stoves, water heaters, dryers, and fireplaces. Common combustion pollutants include carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). • Lead-based paints are still a problem in many older properties and as these paints age and deteriorate or are disturbed they can release dusts contaminated with lead into the air. • Asbestos is another potential issue as it was used in the past in many common building materials. It too can become airborne as it ages or is disturbed. • Mold thrives in conditions with high humidity or due to water damage. In fact, mold can begin to grow in as short as 48 hours on many materials when conditions are suitable. • Additional common indoor allergens can come from dust mites, pet dander, pollen, cockroaches and rodents. These are just a few common indoor pollutants that may be found in homes that could cause health concerns for people living there. Atlanta Top Allergist Dr Paul S. Rabinowitz on Chronic Cough in Atlanta, Georgia
http://www.allergyatlanta.com/about-us/meet-our-staff/ Dr Paul Rabinowitz on chronic cough in Atlanta We're often asked to see patients with chronic cough. In fact, more than ever, we're seeing patients with chronic cough. When I go out and talk with other doctors, it's amazing how many other doctors tell us they have patients with cough they can't bring under control. So, it's a serious problem, and an allergist is a good place to go to have an evaluation. The possibilities that are most likely to cause a chronic cough begin with the sinuses. If somebody has sinus obstruction, sinus infection, with associated drainage, that can lead to a cough. Nasal allergy, with associated post-nasal drip, can lead to a cough. Asthma, can have, as one of its components in addition to wheezing and tightness of chest, cough can be one of the symptoms of asthma (and maybe the only symptom). And finally, patients may have acid reflux coming up into the throat and triggering an irritative cough. So when a patient comes in, I will take a history to see which of these are a possibility; then do appropriate studies, possibly x-rays for sinusitis, allergy testing to see if allergy is present, spirometry to see if asthma is present, and if the symptoms are right, assessing the need for acid-reflux inducing medications. Allergy Drops Ended Allergies For Travis - CornerStone Ear, Nose & Thoat
Travis had suffered from allergies for 20 years. As a soccer coach who is out on the field every day, he always felt the full brunt of allergy season. Travis had tried medications that were either not effective or left him feeling drowsy all day. Weekly allergy shots did not fit his busy schedule. When Travis heard about allergy drops, he didn't believe that a little drop you place under your tongue at home every morning could end the allergies he suffered from for two decades. Learn more at cornerstoneallergydrops.com or call 704-752-7575. video transcription: Travis: I've had allergies for...terrible allergies, for 20 years. And my profession is I'm outdoors. I'm a soccer coach, so I spend all my time out on the soccer fields. And I just learned to cope with it. I've tried all kinds of different prescription medication, different allergy regimens, and no avail. It just didn't work. My symptoms were every day, it would be the eyes would be crusted shut in the morning, trouble breathing. When I would mow the yard, I would have to wear goggles over my face, a mask over my mouth just to prevent all the allergens from getting into my body. Coughing, sneezing, runny nose. So I was very apprehensive about the whole drops thing, like there's no way it's going to be that easy to work. But it does, and it's amazing. It's absolutely amazing. And now, nothing. I know that doesn't sound like it's possible, but it's the truth. I really don't have any symptoms at all. And in the spring time of this year, apparently it was one of the worst allergy seasons ever, and for the first time in two decades for me, I was able to enjoy being outside, in the yard, on the soccer field, and allergy free. Love it.
