ESL New Year's Resolutions Activity is a great way to get teens and adults speaking on the topic of New Year's resolutions. This activity is designed for students with a level of intermediate and above. Encourage students to first discuss New Year’s resolutions Some questions to start with include: What are some New Year's resolutions you have made in the past? Is it popular to make New Year’s resolutions in your country?    Get students to brainstorm common New year’s Resolutions that people make.    Then, ask students to put their ideas into a list of most popular to least popular.     Give/show students the top ten list for 2017. According to a recent ComRes poll, the most common New Year's resolutions include: Exercise more (38 per cent) Lose weight (33 per cent) Eat more healthily (32 per cent) Take a more active approach to health (15 per cent) Learn new skill or hobby (15 per cent) Spend more time on personal well being (12 per cent) Spend more time with family and friends (12 per cent) Drink less alcohol (12 per cent) Stop smoking (9 per cent) Other (1 per cent)     After students compare their answers, they discuss if they guessed correctly or        incorrectly. I'm Rebecca from engVid, and today we're doing a special lesson on celebrating the New Year. So, let's get rid of these colourful decorations and get started. Okay, so first of all, I know there are all kinds of New Years. Right? There are religious New Years, there are national New Years, but in today's lesson we're going to focus on the New Year that starts on January 1st, which is considered the calendar New Year or the Western New Year, or the Gregorian calendar New Year. Okay? So, let's first understand the terms. All right? So, January 1st is considered New Year's Day. December 31st, the day before that and the year before that is considered New Year's Eve. Now, when we say "eve" it means the day before, the evening before, the day before. For example, if Christmas is on December 25th, Christmas Eve is December 24th. So when we have the word "eve", it's always the day before. Okay? All right. So, what I'm going to explain today is how we celebrate the New Year in many English-speaking countries, some of the customs and traditions that we follow, and also some of the things that we say. How do we wish people? How do you greet people? Right? And also some of the things... Special things that you do. All right. So, first let's talk about some of the things that people normally do on December 31st, which is the day when we actually start celebrating and then we go into the New Year. Okay? So, what do we do? We get all dressed up. It's usually a very fun time. It's a very fun time, it's a very special time. And it's also a very meaningful time because the New Year represents a fresh start, a new page, a new chapter in your life. Okay? A chance to do new things, to have new plans, and so on. So it's considered a very special time, people are usually very excited because we all like to have another chance at getting things right in our life, or improving ourselves or improving our life. And that's what New Year's represents to lots of people. So, this is what they do. Usually this is what we do. We dress up in our fancy clothes, many people. It's very, very popular to go to parties. Now, these parties can be of all kinds. You could have a small party at home with just your family and friends, you could have a medium-sized party where you go to a restaurant or a club and they are having a special kind of a celebration for the New Year, and maybe they have a lot of TVs on where they're watching New Year's celebrations in different parts of the world. Or you go... Could go to a large party which is outdoors, maybe it's in a City Hall. Lots of people from different parts of the city come there, they congregate, and they have concerts, music, and all kinds of fun things happening. Or the most famous party, one of the most famous parties and probably one of the largest parties in the whole world that takes place on New Year happens in New York City in Times Square. You might have watched it on television. There, that party, if we can call it that, has a million visitors and lots of other special traditions. There's a very famous thing that happens at midnight, there's a huge crystal ball, it weighs about 5,000 kilos and it's huge, and it's made of crystal, and in the last 10 seconds of the... Of New Year's Eve and going into New Year's Day, the crystal ball begins to drop and what we have is a countdown to the New Year. So everybody goes: "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1", and then: "Happy New Year!" and all the craziness starts. Okay? So that's the biggest party that's probably happening anywhere in the world, which is in Times Square in New York. So, parties, very popular. It doesn't mean that if you don't have a party it's not the New Year. You can have a party by yourself and say: "You know what? I'm happy being by myself", but I'm just telling you what lots of people like to do. So usually we get together with our family and friends. We... As I said, when we go out we attend concerts, we listen to music, people are dancing and people are having fun, they're joking, they're laughing, they're being silly.

Many of us see the New Year as an opportunity to make a fresh start, to give up a bad habit or to take up a good one. When we decide to take up a good habit like eating healthy or give up a bad one like binge eating, we are actually making resolutions which are promises to self and no one else. Does Self-Denial Work? Self-denial is to not allow yourself to do/ have what you want. Does it really work? Umm…the good news is not for food! After Christmas, we are keen on making New Year resolutions about losing weight, particularly when many of us have overindulged which means we have eaten and drunk too much, just like me. But if you have low self-restraint which is the ability to control ourselves, You don’t need to feel guilty because evidence increasingly shows that weight loss diets have no scientific basis, so all that self-denial is actually a waste of effort. Eat what you prefer. Cheers to science! 2. How To Stick To Resolutions? So all of us actually make resolutions but how many actually stick to it? When you stick to something, you continue doing, using, saying, or talking about it, rather than changing to something else. For example, perhaps I should stick to my current job, it’s a great bargain. So the best way to stick to resolutions is to set realistic goals by deciding on things you can really achieve. For example: If you’re trying to lose weight, you might never run a marathon, but you could probably manage a brisk walk around the park most days. You may not be able to give up sugar completely, but perhaps you could cut down on fizzy drinks. 3. Set One Resolution At A Time According to Psychologists, each person only has limited willpower, this is the ability to control oneself. For example, it took every ounce of my willpower to change my eating habits. Since we all have limited willpower, it’s best to make one resolution at a time. If you try to say no to too many of the things you love, you will never succeed. For example, If you decide to quit smoking, lose weight, become an extrovert at the same time, you’re going to fail in all because you have limited will power. Focus all your energies on one of these and once you have achieved one of them, target the next resolution. So don’t deny yourself more than one thing at a time. 4. We Need Determination Are you weak-willed? This is a person without self-control. Don’t worry, after all, nobody is perfect. Is it hard for you to resist those cream cakes? Do you get tempted when you see other people smoking? If you do give in to temptation from time to time then overcome it with determination. Temptation means to allow yourself to have what you want. For example: the desire to smoke when you see someone else smoking. On the other hand, determination is the mental effort to not give up. But when you train your mind to think of the ill effects of smoking and then avoid it, that’s called determination, which means to not give in on the temptation. An example of determination is the strength to keep applying for jobs after being turned down by dozens of potential employers 5. We All Need Motivation Finally, the last point, we all need motivation. But what is motivation? Motivation is the encouragement required to do something difficult. For example, if you know that a healthy diet will give you a fit body you are more likely to eat healthy. So here a fit body is the motivation for eating healthy. Therefore if we know that our good behavior will be rewarded, we are more likely to stay on the straight and narrow i.e. do what we should do. Happy New Year resolutions making to all of you. I’m sure most of you won’t remember half of your New Year resolutions by the end of 2017. Learn English via Listening English Level 2 Lesson 4: New Year's Day On New Year's Day people start a new year. Many people make resolutions. They resolve to be better people. Some people decide that they will lose weight so that they can be healthier. Some people decide to give up smoking. They also want to be healthier. There are all kinds of resolutions that people make. Some people try not to lose their tempers. Some people say that they will work harder. There are people who try to give up bad habits. Every year, my brother says that he will stop biting his nails. He stops biting his nails in January, but by February he always starts again. That is the thing about New Year's resolutions. People seldom keep them. Everybody starts out with good intentions, but it is very hard to stick with them. I don't make New Year's resolutions. I find that I just break them. I just work day by day to break my bad habits. I know that I eat too many sweets. Every day, I just try to resist them. I think that every day is a new day regardless of whether it is New Year's Day or not. Bad habits are hard to break. The best thing is never to start any bad habits. I don't know if my brother will ever stop biting his nails, but I know that each January he intends to stop. Maybe one of these New Year's Days he'll get over that habit. Asking & Giving directions in English? - English Vocabulary Lesson (ESL) In this lesson, Niharika teaches you how to give directions correctly when you are approached by strangers. The quickest/easiest way is : To keep it simple and crisp, you could start by saying 'the quickest/easiest way is to...' Common verbs : 1. Go (left, right, straight, down, up, through) Examples : go left, go straight, go down the hill/slope, go up the hill/slope, go through the tunnel. 2. Take road name : you can also take the road name/number Examples : Take road 1, take the Avenue road. 3. Turn (right/left) : You can say 'turn right/left' if the person is driving as he would need to turn his steering wheel in a particular direction. 4. Stay on + the road name + distance/time Example : You turn left and stay on Avenue road for 5 kms/ ten minutes. There are other things you can mention while giving directions to people. Use transition words : as they make it easier for the people to find their way through. After that : you take road 1. Then : turn right. Next : you will see a bakery shop. When you get to : the bakery, you go down the hill. Finally : And finally, you will reach the new mall. Landmarks : are important/popular/well known buildings, cinemas, restaurants etc. Examples : You will the City hospital on your left. (the hospital is well known in that area) Across the Cookies and Morebakery . (the bakery is popular in that area) Warnings : It is important to give warnings to people while giving directions. This would help them to know what they have deal with own their way to their destination. Examples : It's a on way lane. It's a very busy road. There might be road repairs. Remember, make yourself clear, repeat if you need to so that he knows how to get there without being confused. What if you don't know the correct directions ? There are times you may not know how to give people directions because you are new in the city/area, or you haven't heard of the place that he wants to reach. Don't be rude by shrugging your shoulders and walking away. You could always say : I'm sorry. I'm not from here so I don't know my way around. I'm afraid. I can't help you.
