ESL Teaching Tips: A Lesson Plan for Your Very First Day

04:05
Here are some quick tips for new ESL teachers. This video focuses on developing a workable lesson plan, in this case, I present a plan for what I found to be a fairly successful introductory lesson for both elementary and middle school. At first, you might be tempted to write out elaborate and detailed plans for your ESL classes, where the lesson plan almost becomes a script to be read, rather than a rough guide. This kind of lesson plan is nearly certain to fail miserably. Flexibility is critical to a good lesson plan. Repetition and variation is needed to help the students retain the information covered in class. Try to design a lesson plan in modules, with each chunk being 5-25 minutes. The most important one should come first, and, with a flexible modular design, if the important lesson runs long, one of the latter modules can be eliminated, or covered during the next class. And remember: languages are not learned by listening to a lecture given in that language; language is acquired by engaging with it, by actively using it. If you only remember one thing, remember this: Your students should be talking far more than you are. ~Kyle Clements

How to teach vocabulary (PPP) TESOL / CELTA

21:08
This is a demo lesson taught to TESOL trainees at Wits Language School. The lesson follows the PPP format. Eight lexical items are taught from the lexical set 'jobs'. These items are practised in three subsequent stages. We didn't film the full extent of the practice activities; just enough to give the idea.

How to Teach English (ESL) w/ Games & Activities

02:59
Learn how to teach English using games and activities. 1. 00:12 "Categramble" is an icebreaker and warm-up activity. 2. 01:24 "Whispers" is an activity for teaching sentences. 3. 02:06 "One Hand, Two Hands" is an activity for teaching listening. You can use games and activities throughout much of your lesson "if" you do it properly. Remember you need balance in your lesson. How do you feel about your teaching? Are you confident? INSTEAD of feeling unsure, helpless or maybe even like a fraud of a teacher - imagine feeling confident, secure and satisfied. http://www.course.eslinsider.com/ _____________________________________________________ ESLinsider serves up fresh resources for ESL teachers: how-to videos, interviews with teachers, online TEFL courses, ebooks and a blog. Teaching English the Fun Way: The Game

08:20
This game style of teaching grammar allows all students to be active and participate equally in the class. All students, no matter their level of English can master the game and have success. Students self-correct, help their teammates and analyze the work of their classmates. Writing fast and accurately also develops other areas of the brain. Students also follow the rules, apply the rules, and resolve any conflicts. Students cheer on their classmates and learn to be good sports. And most of all they have fun learning grammar.

Teaching English to Kids in 5 Fun Steps

04:01
Need help? You can start learning a whole lot more about how to teach English to kids with this free course, but first you'll need a "key". To get it search Google for: ESLinsider's course key The advanced course goes into more detail especially in regards to classroom management which is often a challenge when you teach kids. It also offers feedback, support and interaction with a real human which is not common in many of the cheaper courses. About the video: These are 5 fun steps to teaching kids English. In this video you'll see a method for teaching kids English using the "PPP" (Presentation, Practice and Production) style of lesson planning. You will learn how to teach English to children and much of this method can also be applied to teaching other levels too. Such as adults. But the "PPP" style is best for low level learners. Also in this video you will learn some fun games and activities that you can add to your lesson. These will make your lessons more fun and more effective if used correctly. This video was filmed in Busan, South Korea. This was a kindergarten class. I suspect the students here were about 5 years old or so. This method or style of teaching ESL will be effective from kindergarten through elementary school for the most part. Live English Class | Complete Lesson | Teaching 3 and 4 Year Old Children | ESL | EFL

14:15
Hello Everyone! In this video, I am teaching a kindergarten class of about 25 students. This is a live, unedited, English class for 3 and 4 year old Japanese children. I meet with these students about 3 times a month. In this English class, we are learning: A greetings song (I'm good, great, wonderful, hungry, tired, not so good). What's your name song. The alphabet song. Clothing and Colors. Numbers song (1-10). Clothing pattern: A skirt. It's a skirt. The songs I'm using here are from: Dream English: https://www.youtube.com/user/DreamEnglishKids Super Simple Songs: https://www.youtube.com/user/SuperSimpleSongs My videos are vocabulary-based for conversation practice. Each video is themed to provide context for learning. To insure success, every video is designed with open slots for vocabulary substitution practice. These patterns allow students to practice on their own and teachers can have their class practice together as a group. These videos also work great for icebreakers and class discussions. Please have fun and speak English now! English Grammar - Past Continuous - Teaching Ideas - TESOL

01:35
http://www.teflonline.net In this video we look at a TESOL teaching idea for the past continuous tense. For this activity students are put into groups and are handed pictures of people doing different activities. The pictures are placed upside down in a pile and the students take it in turns to turn them over. When they have turned over a card they must make a past continuous sentence based on the picture they have. For example: If they turn over a picture of a woman swimming they would say: She was swimming yesterday. For more advanced students this activity can be used to compare past continuous and past simple. For example: While I was doing the washing up, I broke three plates. Becoming a TESOL teacher enables you to travel the world experiencing new cultures while earning a living and helping people to learn the global language. Taking TESOL course will give you the knowledge and skills needed to make you an effective teacher of English. Join this Facebook group: ฝรั่งสอนภาษาอังกฤษให้คนไทย Farang teaches English to Thai people https://www.facebook.com/groups/FarangSamEnglish/ Teacher Sam's English Camp Games เกมส์ภาษาอังกฤษของครูแซมที่ค่ายภาษาอังกฤษ. Today's topic is "Days of the week" (Class of 19 students). หัวข้อของวันนี้คือ "วันของสัปดาห์" Kids love to race each other. In this game they practice speaking about activities and practice listening for days of the week. 1. Split the class into two teams. Give 7 students from each team a coloured ball. Each colour means a day of the week. Yellow = Monday, Pink = Tuesday, Green = Wednesday, Orange = Thursday Blue = Friday, Purple = Saturday, Red = Sunday. 2. The teacher asks one student "What day do you (say any activity)?" e.g. "What day do you go swimming?" 3. All students with balls must listen carefully. The student says any day at random. e.g. "Monday" 4. One student from each team with a yellow ball (for Monday) must quickly run around the circle in a clockwise direction until they get back to their chair. 5. First student back to their chair gets 1 point. 6. The winning teams is the one with the most points after a set time or first to 10 points wins. 7. After a student has run around they should give their ball to a student that doesn't have a ball, so that they can take part in the game. Game 2 1. Write on the board, the days of the week with activities next to them e.g Monday - Swimming, Tuesday - Fishing, Wednesday - English class.... 2. The teacher say "Today I am (choose an activity from the board)" e.g. "Today I am going fishing" 3. Student must quickly check on the board, what day do I go "fishing". In this case Tuesday. So one student from each team with pink balls (for Tuesday) runs around the circle and the first student back to their chair gets 1 point. ***Alternatively instead of running, students could throw the ball into a basket in the middle of the circle. They can throw the ball as many times as they need but must always throw from their chair. First student to get the ball in the basket gets 1 point. I tried many times to make a video of one of my classes, but I never liked the stuff I got. Finally somebody nailed it on the head! This video shows how much I love teaching kids. I'll do ANYTHING to make them laugh! I feel right at home with them because I'm still a kid! I'm one of them, and they can feel that. I really don't like teaching adults that much anymore and you'll understand why after you watch this. This was shot in July of 2011 with an iPhone.

English Grammar -- Present Simple -- Teaching Ideas - TESL

03:39
http://www.teflonline.net The teaching ideas in these ITTT videos are intended to be used in the Activate stage of a lesson. During this stage students are encouraged to use the language as freely and communicatively as possible. The focus is more on the fluency than on the accuracy of the language. When selecting any activity it is important to ensure that the timing is appropriate and that the activity is appropriate for the students' age, language levels, class size, interests and culture. The video looks at one of three teaching ideas for Present Simple. The activity is called "Find someone who...." Each student will be given a sheet with a number of facts/habits/routines. For example ...plays a musical instrument,.....does a lot of sport, ....has a brother and a sister. The students then mill around and interview each other asking, "Do you play a musical instrument?" "Do you play a lot of sport?" Do you have a brother and a sister?" Students should respond using the Present Simple, "Yes I do","No I don't." The students record names next to the specific fact, for example, Jim plays a lot of sport. After a specified time the students will share their findings with the class. ITTT's certification courses will teach you the different tenses and other grammar points. We will also help you learn interesting and exciting ways of teaching, ensuring that you are able to deliver productive lessons. How to express opposing ideas in English: despite, although, nevertheless, in spite of...

09:33
http://www.engvid.com/ Want to know a simple trick that will help you sound more academic in your speaking? This tip can also help you begin writing the introduction to your TOEFL and IELTS essays. In this video, I will teach you the importance of showing the opposing viewpoint in writing and speech. You will learn how to use words like "although", "even though", "despite", "in spite of", and "nevertheless". These words help you effectively introduce opposing ideas or facts in speech and writing. Despite it sounding complicated and fancy, it is quite easy to learn! You can practice your new English skills by doing our quiz at the end of the lesson. http://www.engvid.com/how-to-express-opposing-ideas-in-english/ TRANSCRIPT Hello. My name is Emma, and in today's video, I am going to teach you a very good and useful trick on how to write essays, how to sound better when you speak, how to do better in presentations. This tip is very useful if you are taking the TOEFL or the IELTS, or if you are studying in college, university, or high school. Okay? So it's a very, very useful trick. This trick is called... Well, I'm calling it: "How to Start Right". Okay? So I'm going to teach you a great way to start, either in your essays or in your speech. Oftentimes, if you're taking the TOEFL or the IELTS, you're going to be asked to give your opinion on something. Okay? In general life, you might have to give your opinion on something. Maybe somebody wants to know: what do you prefer? Do you prefer going to a restaurant, or do you prefer eating at home? What's better? Okay? When you give your opinion, it's a very good idea to start by saying what is good about the opposite opinion. Okay? So, example: if I love restaurants, I want to eat at a restaurant, instead of just saying: "I love restaurants." A better way to start this is by saying the opposite, the good part of the opposite. So, how can I do this? Well, I can say something like: "Although some people love eating at home, I prefer eating at a restaurant." Okay? Another example. Imagine somebody wants to know if I like cats better or dogs better. What is the better animal? Well, maybe if I like dogs better, I would say: "Although some people prefer cats, I prefer dogs.", "Although some people prefer to live in cold countries, I prefer warm countries." So, you can use this in essays, in speaking, in so many different ways. It's always a good idea to start with the opposite of what you believe, a good point of the opposite, and then to say your opinion. Okay? So, I want you to try this. Okay? I'm going to give you a question, and I want you to use this formula. What do you prefer, waking up early or waking up late? Okay? So: "Although some people prefer waking up..., I prefer waking up..." and here you would say either "early" or "late". Okay? So, I've used this word "although". "Although" is to show this contrast. Okay? It's a very, very great word, useful word when you're writing essays or speaking in a formal setting. Something that has the same meaning as "although" is "even though". Okay? So very similar. "Even though". And we can use the same formula. Okay? If I ask you: "Would you rather go to a beach or go skiing?" You can say: "Even though some people love going to beaches, I prefer skiing.", "Even though skiing is a lot of fun, I'd rather go to the beach." Okay? So, again, you're offering the opposite idea first, and then your idea. Great for TOEFL and IELTS speaking. Okay, so let's look at these sentence structures a little bit closer. So, I have here my words: "Although", "even though". What follows is a subject. A subject can be words like: "some people", can be "he", "she", "we", "the teacher". Okay? So, the subject is pretty much a noun. "Although Canada", okay? "Although Canada", "Even though Canada..." Now you need a verb. "Even though Canada", can use the verb "is". "Even though Canada is a good country", okay, if I was writing now, I would put a comma. "Even though Canada is a good country, Canada has problems." So what I'm trying to get at here is that if you use "although", you will have two parts of a sentence. You will have part one before the comma, which has a subject and a verb; and then you will have a second part, part two with a subject and a verb. Okay? So let me give you one more example. "Although learning English is fun, many students find it difficult." Okay? "Although some people like learning English, I prefer learning French." Okay? Just some examples of these types of ideas. So let's look at a couple more expressions to help you show the opposite view. Okay, so let's look at some more words that you can use to show the opposing side. Okay? We can use the word "despite". "Despite" is very similar to "although" and "even though".
