Build It | Holiday Toy Box
Watch the full episode: https://www.thisoldhouse.com/watch/ask-toh-happy-holidays-asktoh Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva and host Kevin O’Connor build a toy box for Tom’s grandson. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 4 hours Cost: $100 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Building a Holiday Toy Box: Miter saw Table saw Router and rabbeting bit Pocket screw jig Drill Clamps Palm sander Jigsaw Brad nailer and compressor Shopping List: 1x4” pine boards 1x8” pine boards ½” plywood birch panels Pocket screws Wood glue 80-100 grit sandpaper Brad nails Steps: 1. Cut the 1x4” boards to a desired rough length using a miter saw. 2. Lay out the boards for the front, back, and bottom of one side. Use the fourth piece to determine the angle for the top of the box. Mark the boards at a desired angle and cut it using the miter saw. 3. Repeat this process for the other side of the box. 4. Cut the stiles and rails for the front of the box at the desired length. 5. Using the table saw, cut dados along the perimeters of the side of the stiles receiving the panel and cut rabbets into the ½” plywood for the sides and front of the box. Keep the panel flush with the backs of the stiles and rails. Be careful to not cut the dados all the way through each board. 6. Cut the panels to size. The ones on the side should be at the same angle as the stiles. 7. Use the router to cut the rabbet on all the panels. 8. Assemble the sides using pocket screws and wood glue. Slide the panels in before securing the fourth stile. 9. Fill the pocket holes using plugs and the wood glue. 10. Sand all the pieces of the toy box. 11. Cut a rabbet using the table saw on the back of the two sides of the toy box. 12. Use the router to add a curve to the front edge of both sides of the box. Sand the sides. 13. Add a curve to the front of the box. Do this by putting a nail at the center of the desired arch, hold a scrap piece of wood tight to the bottom front corners, and trace the curve with a pencil. Cut it out using a jigsaw. 14. Add a cleat to the bottom of the front and sides of the box to hold the bottom of the box in place. 15. Cut a dado in the front, back, and bottom of the box to accept a divider. 16. Assemble the rest of the box using more pocket screws and wood glue. 17. Glue the bottom panel for the box onto the cleat, then secure it with brad nails. 18. Repeat the process for the back of the box. 19. Cut the center divider to width. 20. Slide the center divider into the dados in the front and back of the box. 21. Transfer measurements from the sides of the box to the center divider and cut it parallel to the sides using the jigsaw. The height should be slightly shorter than the side panels by about an inch. 22. Nail the center divider to the back of the box. 23. Cut a top shelf for the box to width and length. Round it with the router and sand. Screw it to the top of the box using pocket screws. Resources: All the materials Tom and Kevin used to build the toy box, including the birch panels, the pine boards, wood glue, and pocket screws can all be purchased at home centers and lumber supply stores. How to Make a Toy Chest
Let's make a Toy chest. Just got this build for a new client and I designed this for her and she loved it. Hope she enjoys the video as well!
In this video i show how i made this round top toy chest based on how-to videos from "whats up Wayne". I created the box of the chest by simply gluing 1x6 pine boards together. Then i joined the sides and bottom with simple butt joints with screws and glue. The top was made by cutting 1.5" strips of 3/4" pine at 2.5" angles on each side of the board. I created a jig for the top glue up. The entire project was challenging and fun! A Simple Plywood Blanket Chest
A neighbor friend of mine asked me to build a simple, plywood blanket chest for their cabin. They planned to paint it so they wanted to use cheap, pine plywood from Home Depot. I used my Festool Domino to join the corners but you could easily do glued and screwed butt joints or long splines instead. Box joints would work really well too if you have a box joint jig that will support pieces this large. The final blanket chest was 60" long, 18" deep, and 26" tall. I am not a professional in most areas covered in these videos, just an average guy trying to save money by doing things on my own. Obviously I only post the videos if I was successful, and so I hope I can help you out. I made these videos mainly because I couldn’t find one for my specific project on YouTube. Ask any questions you have in the comments, but just know I don’t really know anything & just figured it out along the way. If you know anything about the project in this video or have experience yourself, please by all means comment and tell me what I should have known or done differently!

DIY Blanket Box
I am forever trying to figure out ways to store things without resorting to plastic bins. So, I went with a more modern take on an old classic: the linen chest. Simple and sturdy enough to double as a window seat. This box is composed of 1"x4" fir boards, 2"x4"s, and 1/2" plywood. Measurements and a step-by-step walkthrough are coming soon to ijessup.com. If you want to see what else I'm working on you can follow me on Instagram @ijessup. Thanks for watching and supporting my channel!

DIY: Cedar Garden Planter Box
Here is a do it yourself cedar garden planter box. Yes, it can be used as a flower box as well. Home gardening is highly rewarding. My family and I found this project to be simple enough to do together. The kids loved playing with dirt and planting seeds of their choice. The cool thing is that the design can be easily tweaked for lots of different sizes and shapes so that you can plant anything from salad greens to deep rooted plants such as tomatoes. For the design plans for this planter box visit: http://www.simplyeasydiy.com/2014/10/diy-garden-planter-box.html If you would like a smaller version of this planter visit: http://www.simplyeasydiy.com/2014/12/diy-12-inch-cedar-garden-planter-box.html I would also like to announce the launch of my second YouTube Channel called Simply Easy Homesteading: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7oJg7WOR8xk-qsQRmZbfLQ If you enjoy the video format I feature here on my main channel along with my sometimes quirky sense of humor and you like all things DIY.
