Batteries: Alkaline vs NiMH vs Lithium-ion

12:13
Ever wonder about the differences between alkaline, nickel metal hydride, and lithium-ion batteries? Wonder no more! Alkaline batteries are great for their initial higher voltage, but the total current available drops off (along with the voltage) over time. NiMH cells have a lower voltage, but it stays constant along with the available current. And finally, lithium-ion batteries are in a class of their own: You can even get high C-rating Li-ion cells where you can safely pull even more current than the cell is rated at, and the voltage only drops a relatively small amount. i figured i would compare Alkaline Vs Lithium cells in my devices to see if there was a noticeable performance increase. in my personal devices that would be a resounding No however that doesn't necessarily mean that there's no difference. there is about .1v fresh charge difference and the discharge of lithium cells is smoother. along with the fact they supposedly last 8 times longer

Which Battery Lasts the Longest?

02:57
We put the major battery brands to the test to find out which battery will give you the most bang for your buck! Get your free audio book: http://audible.com/household Our testing process was fairly simple but effective. We used the exact same brand of flashlight (Maglite Xenon) all straight from the box. Each pair of batteries tested came from different stores around the Portland, OR area. Set 1 came from Fred Meyer, set 2 from Target and set 3 from Safeway. We did this to make sure we used different shipments and manufacturing dates from the battery companies. While the procedure was not necessarily scientific, it gives you an indication of what you might expect when purchasing not only batteries, but any product on the market today. It's always good to do your own research and make purchases based on what you find to work over a long period of time. The oddest result was with the Energizer 9x Ultimate. It did not perform as expected. After some research we found that this particular battery is mainly intended to be used in high-draw electronics such as digital cameras. However, the marketing on the box says it is GREAT for flashlights. Go figure... Let's [Quickly] Open: Crappy NiMH Cells from AliExpress vs. Panasonic Eneloop Cells

A look at some possibly-fake random "NiMH" AA cells from AliExpress, comparing them to Panasonic Eneloop cells. The part about them perhaps not being real NiMH cells? That's not the weirdest thing. Unlike most of my AliExpress purchases, these shipped from The Netherlands, despite the seller being called Shenzhen DeKang International Trade. I absolutely do NOT recommend buying these, but for posterity here is a link to the product page on AliExpress: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-shipping-New-8pcs-lot-AA-3800mAh-1-2-V-Quanlity-Rechargeable-Battery-AA-NI-MH/32482484633.html I picked them up for US$6.62 including shipping, but as of the time I'm updating this description (2016-05-20) they're going for a ridiculous US$11.44!

Review 1.5v Lithium AA Rechargeable Battery, so far I love them.

I have not had these batteries very long but so far they are great. I use them in to listen to the news with my Roku on the remote headset and so far so good. I was using NiMH batteries but after a short time, they would start failing. These batteries are the same price as the nimNiMH h, and they charge so fast, plus the 1000 charge cycles with still a lot of capacity left I will not need to replace these for a while and just by more for the rest of my devices.I would not use these for electric door locks, smoke detectors, or any other device you need to know the battery must be changed but still work. by HITRENDS Link: http://a.co/1XMQzY3 USB Rechargeable AA Lithium Batteries - Li-ion Battery Cell - 1.5V / 1200mAH (2-Pack) - Not NI-MH / NI-CD / Alkaline Batteries - ECO-Friendly and Recyclable - No Memory Effect ▶AA LITHIUM BATTERY - Not like Alkaline, NI-MH, NI-CD batteries, the AA Li-ion battery features NO Memory Effect to reduce the capacity over time, longer life, more eco-friendly ▶USB RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES - Whether in camping or home, you can simply charge it with a single USB port. DON'T USE Rechargeable Batteries...This is why!

06:39
Where I Buy all of my Gear http://bit.ly/emipazm (Best Prices Too!!) This video I explain my reason why I don't use rechargeable batteries, but I use regular alkaline batteries instead. Alkaline batteries are consistent to each other when wearing down or losing it's charge, unlike rechargeable batteries. Also, alkaline batteries have a shelf life of 5-10 years. When rechargeable batteries sit for long periods of time, they need to be recharge. Rechargeable batteries need to be on some kind of recharge cycle even if they are not being used. To me, it's just to hard to track. When I put batteries in my equipment, I need to know that they are going to work. Rechargeable batteries can dump a charge and then stop work for whatever reason. The only benefit rechargeable batteries have over non rechargeable batteries is that they are "green". I love them for protecting the environment, but that's about it. Buying batteries all of the time can be expensive. That's why I wait until black Friday to purchase all of my batteries for the year. Some stores blow out batteries at ridiculous prices and with a shelve life of 5-10 years, holding onto new batteries for a year is no problem. All alkaline batteries are virtually the same. Don't get fooled by the hype. The lasting power will be very close from brand to brand. Be sure not to buy batteries that say "heavy duty". Batteries of those types are not alkaline batteries and will not last at all. Remember, this is my opinion. Rechargeable batteries may work for you. They definitely will save you money if you use lots of batteries. I don't like them because of their reliability. I really like to use fresh batteries every time I shoot and I need to know that they are fully charge and are going to work when called upon. Tell me what you use in the comments below. Battery Hack! (Lithium VS Water) Melts Glass!

03:46
I dissect a lithium battery and harvest its lithium metal to see what happens when I drop it in a glass of water. lithium reacts violently with water as the lithium oxidizes and rips the oxygen molecules out of the water (H2O) and leaves the hydrogen behind ready to ignite from the heat of the reaction and burst into flames. I was actually pretty surprised with what it did to my glass.

Types of Batteries in Hindi

10:26
A battery is a source of electrical energy, which is provided by one or more electrochemical cells of the battery after conversion of stored chemical energy. In today’s life, batteries play an important part as many household and industrial appliances use batteries as their power source. Types of Batteries: Batteries can be divided into two major categories, primary batteries and secondary batteries. A primary battery is a disposable kind of battery. Batteries Once used, it cannot be recharged. Secondary batteries are rechargeable batteries. Once empty, it can be recharged again. This charging and discharging can happen many times depending on the battery type. Alkaline batteries, Mercury batteries, Silver-Oxide batteries, and Zinc carbon batteries are examples of primary batteries whereas Lead-Acid batteries and Lithium batteries fall into the secondary battery's category. Alkaline Batteries Alkaline batteries are non-rechargeable, high energy density, batteries that have a long life span. This battery obtained its name because the electrolyte used in it is alkaline (potassium hydroxide). The chemical composition features zinc powder as an anode and manganese dioxide as the cathode with potassium hydroxide as the electrolyte. Zinc-Carbon Batteries Zinc-Carbon batteries are also known as dry cells (as the nature of electrolyte used in these cells is dry), which come in a composition of a carbon rod (cathode) surrounded by a mixture of carbon powder and manganese dioxide (to increase the conductivity). This whole combination is packed in a zinc container acting as the anode. The electrolyte is a mixture of ammonium chloride and zinc chloride. The typical voltage value is a little less than 1.5V. These batteries are durable and have longer lives. Zinc-Carbon batteries can be used effectively at moderate temperature but do not work well at low temperatures. Lead-Acid Batteries Lead-acid batteries are the rechargeable kind of batteries invented in the 1980s. These large, heavyweight batteries find the major application in automobiles as these fulfill the high current requirements of the heavy motors. The composition of Lead-Acid battery changes in charged and discharged states. A combination of Pb (negative) and PbO2 (positive) as electrodes with H2SO4 as electrolyte in charged form and PbSO4 and water in discharged form. Mercury Batteries Mercury batteries are non-rechargeable batteries that contain mercuric oxide with manganese dioxide. They are deep discharge batteries and voltage level does not fall below 1.35V until 5% energy level is reached. These batteries are less popular because of low output voltage. Furthermore, mercury is toxic and can cause hazards for humans. Lithium and Silver Oxide Batteries Lithium batteries are rechargeable (secondary) batteries, where lithium in its pure ion compound form is used. Depending on the design and chemical compounds used, lithium batteries can produce voltages from 1.5 Volts to 3.7 Volts. The most common type of lithium battery used in consumer applications uses manganese dioxide as cathode and metallic lithium as anode. Compared to ordinary zinc–carbon batteries or alkaline batteries, the voltage production of lithium cell is twice from them. Silver oxide batteries are expensive, small to large sized primary cells that offer better run time than alkaline batteries. They are usually suitable for powering low-current electrical devices. They use silver oxide as positive (cathode) electrode, zinc as negative (anode) electrode plus alkaline electrolyte, normally Potassium hydroxide (KOH) or Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH).

Get Lithium Metal From an Energizer Battery

03:41
We show you how to get Lithium Metal from an Energizer Ultimate Lithium battery. Warning: This should be done outside or in a fumehood due to the toxic gases that may be formed under certain conditions. Gloves must be worn as the chemicals and lithium are corrosive. There are a great many types of lithium batteries and the particular chemistry of interest is "lithium iron disulfide" batteries which contain pure lithium metal and less toxic electrolyte than other batteries. Lithium ion batteries do not contain lithium metal (just lithium ions) and other pure metal lithium batteries often contain incredibly toxic electrolyte that make them too dangerous for the average person to safely open. It just so happens that the popular Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries are based on lithium iron disulfide chemistry making them the ideal choice for the home chemist to obtain lithium. The rolled lithium core is protected by a mini-fortress of steel that you have to cut through. The danger is accidentally shorting the battery and causing the internal materials to fuse. The video shows you what you have to go through and what to expect when opening an energizer ultimate lithium battery. Lithium is a powerful chemical reducing agent, it's also used for lithiation reactions in organic synthesis, batteries, unusual pyrotechnic formulations and some types of nuclear technologies. It's in the same category as the alkali metals which include the ever so popular sodium, potassium and cesium.

Recharging Alkaline Batteries - Is it really possible?

05:41
Some devices claim to be able to recharge disposable alkaline batteries such as Energizer, Duracell, etc. In this video we'll put one of these devices to the test and see how well it works. UPDATE - I thought I should mentioned that every single battery I recharged started leaking within a few weeks of charging it. So even on the batteries that appeared to take some charge, ultimately it killed the battery.

What is RECHARGEABLE ALKALINE BATTERY? What does RECHARGEABLE ALKALINE BATTERY mean?

What is RECHARGEABLE ALKALINE BATTERY? What does RECHARGEABLE ALKALINE BATTERY mean? RECHARGEABLE ALKALINE BATTERY meaning - RECHARGEABLE ALKALINE BATTERY definition - RECHARGEABLE ALKALINE BATTERY explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ A rechargeable alkaline battery (also known as alkaline rechargeable or rechargeable alkaline manganese (RAM)) is a type of alkaline battery that is capable of recharging for repeated use. The first-generation rechargeable alkaline technology was developed by Battery Technologies Inc in Canada and licensed to Pure Energy, EnviroCell, Rayovac, and Grandcell. Subsequent patent and advancements in technology have been introduced. The formats include AAA, AA, C, D, and snap-on 9-volt batteries. Rechargeable alkaline batteries are manufactured fully charged and have the ability to hold their charge for years, longer than NiCd and NiMH batteries, which self-discharge. Rechargeable alkaline batteries can have a high recharging efficiency and have less environmental impact than disposable cells. Most alkaline batteries available are disposable, designed to be used until exhausted, then discarded. There are also rechargeable alkaline batteries, designed to be recharged. Disposable alkaline batteries are classed as primary batteries; manufacturers do not support recharging, and warn that it may be dangerous. Despite this advice, alkaline batteries have successfully been recharged, and suitable chargers have been available. The capacity of a recharged alkaline battery declines with number of recharges, until it becomes unusable after typically about ten cycles. Low-ripple direct current is not suitable for charging disposable alkaline batteries; more suitable is a current pulsed at a rate of 40 to 200 pulses per second, with an 80% duty cycle. Pulsed charging appears to reduce the risk of electrolyte—usually potassium hydroxide (KOH)—leakage. The charging current is low to prevent rapid production of gases that can rupture the cell. Cells that have leaked electrolyte are a safety hazard and unsuitable for reuse. Fully discharged cells recharge less successfully than only partly depleted cells, particularly if they have been stored in a discharged state —battery charger manufacturers do not claim to recharge dead cells. Attempting to recharge a discharged alkaline battery can cause the production of gas within the canister. As the canister is normally sealed, pressure generated by rapid accumulation of gas can open the pressure relief seal and cause leakage of electrolyte. Potassium hydroxide in the electrolyte is corrosive and may cause injury and damage, particularly corroding the battery contacts in the equipment. Some materials used in batteries are damaging to the environment. In some jurisdictions it is illegal to dispose of batteries in ordinary waste streams. Free collection points for used portable batteries are often available where batteries are sold. As an alkaline battery is discharged, chemicals inside the battery react to create an electric current. However, once the chemicals have reached chemical equilibrium, the reaction stops, and the battery is depleted. By driving a current through the battery in the reverse direction, the equilibrium can be shifted back towards the original reactants. Different batteries rely on different chemical reactions. Some reactions are readily reversible, some are not. The reactions used in most alkaline batteries fall into the latter category. In particular, the metallic zinc generated by driving a reverse current through the cell will generally not return to its original location in the cell, and may form crystals that damage the separator layer between battery anode and electrolyte....

Which AA batteries do you use? Are they powerful enough? To see the full review with test results either watch the video or go to the full review page at ATP: http://www.all-things-photography.com/energizer-lithium-aa-battery-review/ In this review, I test the Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA Batteries against their powerful counterparts: • Energizer Eco Advanced AA batteries (£1.24 each) • Duracell Ultra Power AA Batteries (£1.16 each) ...and a set of ultra cheap Wilko Functional AA Batteries (£1 for 12 or 0.08p each) just for fun. I have heard great things about the Lithium AA batteries but have always used either the Duracell Ultra Powers or Energizer rechargeable batteries in my speedlights and gadgets. I have also read that the Lithium batteries have a tendency to overheat during excessive use with power hungry gadgets like the Canon 580EX II speedlight... ...so I fired close to 1000 strobes at full power with the 580EX II to see if I could blow it up or set fire to it, but which battery performed the best and lasted the longest? To see the full review with test results either watch the video or go to the full review page at ATP: http://www.all-things-photography.com/energizer-lithium-aa-battery-review/ Equipment used: • Canon 580EX II • Energizer Ultimate AA Lithium batteries • Duracell Ultra Power AA LR6 batteries • Wilko Functional AA batteries The results were surprising to me and all I will say is stay away from the Wilko Functional batteries unless you are powering a sheet of tissue paper or similar.

Capacity test and comparison of AA alkaline batteries. Which of those single use (non-rechargeable) batteries lasts the longest? I compared brands like Duracell, GP, Varta, Energizer and also a cheap K-Classic battery from Kaufland supermarket. None of the batteries says anything about its mAh capacity, it's always just "super long lasting", so I made a test using my battery analyzer. The result was quite surprising! Why A Dead Alkaline Battery Bounces!

05:32
This test works equally well for AA, AAA, C, D and 9 Volt alkaline batteries. http://leehite.org/How_Things_Work.htm Batteries are regularly frozen when left outdoors in the winter. If a good alkalin battery is frozen, the electrolyte will stiffen sufficiently to cause a bounce. This is a room temperature test only. It is our understanding that the following chemical reactions occur and helps to explain our observations. A non-rechargeable alkaline battery begins life using zinc powder mixed into a gel containing a potassium hydroxide electrolyte separated from a paste of manganese dioxide powder mixed with carbon powder using a porous membrane. To minimize hydrogen out-gassing an extra measure of manganese dioxide is added. As the battery discharges manganese dioxide powder changes to manganese oxide causing the powdered granules to bond both chemically and physically. This packed-sand consistency reduces the anti-bounce effect exhibited by the gel mixture when the battery was fully charged.
