Where to Recycle your Christmas Tree in Denver
More info: http://northdenvernews.com/where-to-recycle-your-christmas-tree-denver https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkrCLt-1lg8 'Tis almost the season to recycle your Christmas tree through the Denver Public Works Treecycle program! In Denver, trees will be collected over two weekends in January, which is a change in the program from previous years when customers were instructed to set out their trees on their regular trash collection day. Here's how to participate in the 2017 program: · On Saturday, January 7 or Saturday, January 14, Denver Solid Waste Management customers should set their trees out for collection at their normal trash set-out location no later than 7:00am. The trees will be picked up over the weekend. · Only real trees are accepted for recycling; no artificial or flocked trees. · Remove all decorations, lights and tree stands. · Please set trees at least two feet away from trash or recycling containers, cars and other obstacles. Do not place trees inside bags, trash carts or dumpsters. Denver residents who are unable to participate in Treecycle, can recycle their trees for free at the Cherry Creek Recycling Drop-Off through Sunday, January 31. Please note, Extra Trash crews will not collect trees before or during Treecycle. All trees collected during Treecycle will be turned into mulch, which will be made available to Denver residents for free at the city's annual Mulch Giveaway and Compost Sale in the spring! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkrCLt-1lg8
Florida Mosaic EXPOSED: Fluoride, Radiation, Mulberry Facility "Orphaned"
Oh boy. (please excuse my stuffy sinus voice) https://www.epa.gov/enforcement/mosaic-fertilizer-llc-settlement The 60 billion pounds of hazardous waste is based on the combined amount of corrosive wastewaters that will be treated at terminal closure of the facilities. Mosaic is one of the fertilizers industry’s best performers in its ability to reduce large volumes of corrosive wastewater in its phosphogypsum stack systems. In addition to recovering valuable phosphate and other compounds, Mosaic is able to reduce terminal closure costs while ensuring that its phosphogypsum stack systems are operated in an environmentally safe manner. Four Mosaic facilities (New Wales, Bartow, Riverview in Florida and Uncle Sam in Louisiana) will continue to produce phosphoric acid and actively utilize its phosphogypsum stack systems. Mosaic is in the closure process for the Green Bay Complex and South Pierce facility in Florida, and the Faustina facility in Louisiana. However, Faustina will continue to manufacture ammoniated fertilizer. Mosaic operated a small sulfuric acid plant at the Mulberry facility in Florida for a short time. The Mulberry sulfuric acid plant was closed around 2008 and there are no obligations regarding this site in this settlement. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2015/10/20/fluoridation-company-fined-2-billion.aspx Mosaic Fertilizer, LLC is one of the world's largest phosphate mining and fertilizer companies. ;In October 2015, the company agreed to a $2 billion settlement with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection over a 10-year battle over hazardous waste disposal. The EPA accused Mosaic of improper storage and disposal of waste from the production of phosphoric and sulfuric acids, key components of fertilizers, at the company's facilities in Louisiana and Florida. The Tampa Bay Times reported:1 "The EPA said it had discovered Mosaic employees were mixing highly corrosive substances from its fertilizer operations with the solid waste and wastewater from mineral processing, in violation of federal and state hazardous waste laws." The EPA further noted:2 "The 60 billion pounds of hazardous waste addressed in this case is the largest amount ever covered by a federal or state. . . settlement and will ensure that wastewater at Mosaic's facilities is properly managed and does not pose a threat to groundwater resources." It is ironic that the EPA acknowledges the threat posed to groundwater by Mosaic's hazardous waste disposal because one of the chemicals classified as hazardous waste is fluorosilicic acid, another waste product of their fertilizer production. Mosaic is one of the largest sellers of fluorosilicic acid, which is widely used by public drinking water systems across the US to fluoridate water supplies. More than 200 million Americans drink these wastes every day, according to the Fluoride Action Network (FAN).3 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poisoning_of_Alexander_Litvinenko#210Po_content_in_the_body_of_Litvinenko

Bin collection CHAOS fears as China BANS waste imports from UK
CHINA’S ban on importing plastic recycling from the UK could cause “chaos” for local councils trying to perform bin collections, it is claimed. On January 1, Beijing officially outlawed the practice, which had seen it accepting 7.3 tonnes of waste from the UK, US and Japan in 2016 alone. And there has already been a huge build up of plastic waste at UK recycling facilities this year in the wake of the move. With most councils outsourcing their recycling to big firms, there are fears it could raise costs and lead to further cuts in bin collections. Chief executive of the UK Recycling Association, Simon Ellin, said radical action was required. He warned: “You can already see the impact if you walk round some of our members’ yards.  “Plastic is building up and if you were to go around those yards in a couple of months’ time the situation would be even worse. “We have relied on exporting plastic recycling to China for 20 years and now people do not know what is going to happen.  “A lot of our members are now sitting back and seeing what comes out of the woodwork, but people are very worried.” He added: “If it no longer pays for our members to take this waste and sort it once it has been collected by councils then that might stop. “That might mean that councils no longer collect recycling in the same way.  “It could be chaos, it really could.” Some recycling organisations have warned the ban will see more plastic waste end up at landfill and incineration sites. Environment Secretary Michael Gove published a plan last month in a bid to tackle problems with UK recycling. Among the priorities was to standardise collections and cut the number of plastic types available. The Local Government Association (LGA), which represents councils across the UK, has also urged companies to change their packaging. Martin Tett, the LGA’s environment spokesman, said: “Councils have asked repeatedly for manufacturers and retailers, who both choose to produce and stock packaging which isn’t easily recyclable, to get around a table with us and work together to explore solutions to this.  “What we need is packaging that is easily recyclable – this would not only make waste disposal easier for our residents, but save considerable amounts of money and energy, whilst protecting our environment. “Producers need to switch to recyclable items so that plastic clogging up our environment becomes a thing of the past.  “We want to work with supermarkets and manufacturers so that we avoid having unrecyclable waste in the first place, and would urge them to switch to recyclable packaging where possible, and help us build on existing recycling schemes where not.”

Japan's Pollution Experience: Island of Waste Part 2 of 4
Japan gained material wealth after rapid economic growth which lifted the people's living standards. Especially in cities, mass production and consumption led to generation of massive volumes of waste. Japan first handled its waste by burying it in the mountains or using it to reclaim lands offshore. However, this method soon reached its limitations. Industrial waste produced from factories and construction sites had nowhere to go except to less populated countryside and remote islands. These became waste mountains causing much pollution. By the time illegal dumping was exposed, so much waste had accumulated. Garbage pollution is difficult to tackle because it comes from numerous sources both domestic and industrial. Victims and victimizer are not visible to each other, which makes the situation more complex and hard to resolve. This film features Japanese citizens who questioned their waste legislation and voluntarily started recycling campaign. It recalls the challenges that Nagoya city faced when it withdrew a new reclamation plan, and looks at a typical illegal dumping site in Teshima island, Kagawa prefecture. Japan's waste problems are far from over. The film ends with the key question: How can production and consumption minimise waste generation in the future?

If there is no dump site, then we will have nothing. It is our only hope." 0109 Wide shot of young boy sorting through garbage dump 0113 Close-up of boy's face 0118 ENDS STORYLINE: The World Summit for Sustainable Development in Johannesburg will address many issues for the world's environment. One of the most important is the issue of waste; how to deal with it, where to put it and how to prevent there being so much of it. In the Philippines, it's already a problem which has been studied intensely, and which they hope can be solved with the help of aid awarded at the Earth Summit. 0002 Garbage mounds like this one in the Philippine capital Manila are imposing symbols of poverty. Scavengers wait for the garbage trucks to arrive so they can search for bits of wood or metal they can sell for a few cents. It's not a great earner but it's an impressive system of recycling. However not everything can be sold, and the mound just get bigger. 0024 Moreover, the authorities struggle to collect all the garbage from the city's streets in the first place. But they do have a plan - to collect it using the existing railway system and box cars to carry the trash to the dumps. 0043 The government is hoping the Earth Summit will highlight the importance of solving waste problems in developing countries. But will the government's vision of an efficient waste disposal system have a place for scavengers like Rosita Tadim who cannot envisage a different life? 0058 SOT Tadim "She says we have to go to the dump to earn a living to feed our children. If there is no dump, we will have nothing. It is our only hope." 0108 But maybe the best hope is for the government's vision of a cleaner future to include a new life for children like Rosita's. DPS Energy Challenge - Student Stories
In the 2011-2012 school year, the Denver Public Schools (DPS) Sustainability office launched the district's first-ever energy competition. Sponsored by the City and County of Denver Department of Environmental Health and Xcel Energy, the DPS Energy Challenge provided financial incentives to student teams that took sustainable actions. The challenge was open to high schools district-wide; eight schools were selected to compete. Each school received $500 of startup funds to seed initial projects as well as audit kits and resource workbooks. Students chose from a menu of sustainability actions (and created some of their own) to conserve energy or water, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and/or reduce the amount of solid waste in landfills. Teams worked with local organizations, teachers, peers and community members. As points accumulated, the teams earned more funding.

B.A.G. Brock and Georgina Against Garbage video
On March 24, 2007 a devoted group of Durham Region citizens gathered near Cannington Ontario Canada, at the local waste managment facility to demonstate the proposed expansion of a dump that is already near full. Up until now, the landfill serviced the immediate area of Brock Township but the proposed expansion would make way for garbage from over ALL of Durham Region to be brought to this site. The citizens are concerned that this plan may be a done deal if they don't soon educate the community to the potential expense, danger and lack of viability that the proposal seems to hold.

http://www.qualityrecycling.com/waste.htm WASTE TO ENERGY SYSTEMS - ONE-THIRD THE COST & BETTER PERFORMANCE Quality Recycling has teamed with RCBC Technologies to provide the perfect culmination to the MRF. RCBC Technologies has combined well-known and time-tested principles to create a rotating cylindrical combustion chamber that uses patented Rotary Cascading Bed Combustion (RCBC) technology. The RCBC provides the ideal conditions for clean combustion of diverse fuels, ranging from high sulfur coals to municipal solid wastes and sludge. A MRF and the RCBC combined produce the ultimate waste to energy plant. These waste to energy plants burn municipal wastes to produce steam and electricity. This energy is produced with less harmful emissions than the conventional fossil-fuel powered energy plants. There are other outstanding advantages to the waste to energy technology: RCBC reduces waste volume up to 90% and the end product is an ash that can be combined with compost from the MRF and used for soil conditioning and land reclamation. Combustion in the RCBC destroys bacteria, household chemical and other compounds that are a potential hazard to health and environment. These once harmful components of the waste stream are converted to a useful product that can actually help our environment. Combustion eliminates the odor and methane normally produced by waste, and can completely eliminate the need for a landfill. Quality Recycling is the exclusive distributor of the patented RCBC technology. The RCBC is not only more efficient than other combustors, but can be produced at about 1/3 their cost. If you would like a demonstration video of the RCBC, please contact us . Visit our website to read more information about the Rotary Cascading Bed Combustion. Three Alternate Timelines: Worlds That Didn't Make the Cut
Alternate history is full of good ideas. Some ideas simply don't work out. They aren't solid enough to be videos on their own. Part 2: Fracking At Lowry LARGE Scale Industry
Westin Wilson on Probable Impact of Fracking for Oil at Lowry Bombing Range, Arapahoe County. Interview with Westin Wilson, former Denver EPA Environmental Engineer, in Denver CO, on April 13, 2011, regarding the probable impact of horizontal hydraulic fracturing for oil at the Former Lowry Bombing Range in Arapahoe County, Colorado. The Colorado State Land Board is considering a proposal to lease 1600-2600 acres of land for 19-98 oil fracking wells. The land is north of the Aurora Reservoir, above 4 aquifers, in an area designated as low impact and resource sensitive. Fracking would bring very large scale industrial operations that would impact area air, land, water, and quality of life (noise, traffic, road use, fumes, etc). Mr. Wilson became a whistleblower at the EPA, regarding the conclusions of an EPA final report of 2004, that concluded, contrary to the evidence contained therein, that hydraulic fracturing poses little or no threat to underground sources of drinking water and required no further study. Mr. Wilson subsequently became an EPA whistleblower in order to alert Congress to the possible impacts of fracking on drinking water and the need for further study re impact on water and air quality. For more info on the Lowry project, see website: http://frackingcolorado.wordpress.com/ Colorado residents: Please consider our 2 petitions, which contain detailed information about the project's probable impact, our specific requests to mitigate impacts on public health, air quality, water quality, and area quality of life, and also specify that the oil and gas companies (rather than Arapahoe County or the State Land Board or the state of Colorado) would be liable for any related road damages, spills cleanup, or other environmental damages.
