How Much Mess Does A Cockatiel Make?
A lot! Watch this video for some examples of the mess our cockatiels Pete and Tom make, such as tearing up newspaper, preening (during which they create dust), and generally destroying household objects. It's worth the chaos though, my tip would be to make sure to give them something to chew! http://thedailycockatiel.blogspot.com

I will answer that with a resounding yes. Most people unfortunately don't realize that their birds need checkups. They come to us for the first time, mostly on emergency when their birds are sick. What we try to change is that mentality that birds should only come in when they're sick. We can actually prevent a lot of illness by seeing birds on a regular basis, like we do with cats and dogs. Having regular checkups, having stool examinations, blood testing, all very, very important in keeping a bird healthy. Most birds need to come in at least annually. When they get older for some of the species that are smaller, that don't live as long, sometimes they need to come in twice a year. We see birds all day. Do you want to tell them a little bit about what we do with birds on exam? Sarah: Absolutely, I mean one of the most important things that we do especially with a new bird coming in is we like to do blood work on the bird, just as a basic blood work to see what their normal body functions are even if the bird isn't sick. This way in the future, if the bird becomes ill, we can easily compare blood work and say, "Okay, when the bird was well and feeling okay the blood work looked like this." We can spot minor discrepancies between the blood work when the bird is feeling ill as compared to when the bird is well. As well as doing fecal exams. They can get parasites just like your other pets. and they can have negative effects on their health. and it's good to make sure that none of that is going on. Dr. Laurie: Absolutely, and we have to recognize that although birds may be young when we get them, as they age just like we age, our cats and dogs age they go through different life stages. One of the things that we focus on at our hospital is recognizing the different stages of life and the different requirements, whether they be environmental requirements, moving the perches closer together because the bird is not able to climb as well, nutritional requirements. Certainly you don't need the same amount of food as you do when you're growing as you do when you're older and a little more sedentary. Even behavioral requirements, certain younger animals need more activity than some older animals. So birds change and age just as we do and we need to recognize that. That's what a good avian veterinarian and a good technician recognize on a good checkup.

Why does your bird need PRIME?
It's the best way to ensure total nutrition for all caged & aviary birds. Are you feeding your bird a mixed diet of seeds, nuts, veggies and fruits? Do you feed only a limited amount of pellets? PRIME is the only bird food supplement specifically formulated for seed, vegetable and fruit-based diets. PRIME adds 14 essential vitamins and 9 minerals missing in commercially prepared seed mixtures for companion birds. As well it provides proper quantities of two limiting amino acids – Lysine and Methionine – which cannot be produced by birds, but are vital to growth and proper protein metabolism. PRIME also has a unique combination of enzymes, acidifiers and micro-encapsulated, sporulated probiotics (beneficial bacteria)  for healthy gut flora. PRIME does not have sugar! PRIME contains Vitamin D and E for increased breeding and to aid in adequate calcium absorption. The ultra-fine, powder penetrates soft foods for accurate dosage administration and does not cake over time. PRIME has been used and recommended with confidence by serious breeders, zoos, conservation groups, and the avian veterinary community worldwide. Prime was developed by the Hagen Avicultural Research Institute. More information: http://hari.ca/our-products/bird-supplements/prime/prime-vitamin-supplement-for-birds/

Most of the larger birds live longer. Many of the big Macaws that we see, even the Amazon Parrots, the African Greys can live 30 to 40, sometimes even more years in captivity. Most birds in captivity don't live as long as in the wild, becasue they are not exposed to the same fresh air, and sunlight, and nutrition as they would get in the wild. But these birds are very, very long lived, which makes them actually very popular pets. And some of the smaller birds, however, live shorter periods. I mean, what would you say? You have Cockatiels, and smaller birds. Sarah: I would say, Cockatiels and smaller birds, like this little green cheek Conure, usually around 20 years. I would say that the better diet and care they get early on, the longer you can expect to have a healthy bird in your home. Doctor Hess: Absolutely, I mean, some of the small Parakeets, the Budgerigars, we used to think 6 to 8 years. We've seen them actually live into their teens now that we know what their requirements are. I've been a bird veterinarian for almost 20 years. And the recommendations I make now are very, very different from those I made years ago. And we know that all these recommendations are very, very important in keeping kidneys healthy, the liver healthy, bodies functioning longer. So it is really important to seek out the advice of a veterinarian comfortable with birds, so you can learn about what's best for your birds, so that he or she can be happy and healthy for a very long time.

How to Feed a Bird | Pet Bird

And we know that what you feed your bird is important to their nutrition and their health, overall. Birds live longer and are much healthier when on a balanced diet. For most birds, we recommend a pelleted diet. There are different types of pellets for different types of birds, but it's kind of like cereal for kids. It's a nutritionally balanced, complete diet, that you know if they get a good meal of pellets every day, they're at least getting overall good nutrition. We usually say about two-thirds of a bird's diet should be made up of pellets. You can feed some table foods, some people food, like fruits and vegetables. You want to avoid high salt foods, high sugar foods, things that are very fatty, because some birds are prone to getting high cholesterol and atherosclerosis, or hardening of their arteries. Most food, really, should be purchased from a store that is commercially available for birds. No fatty treats like seeds and nuts. They should be really limited. What about making your own bird food? A lot of people do ask if they can make their own food for their bird. I think it makes people feel nice to have the idea to cook for their bird and give them proper nutrition, but unfortunately, in our own homes, we are unable to make the correct mix of vitamins and nutrients in a food for birds. Most pelleted diets are very scientifically formulated to have the correct amount of calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin E. We can very easily miss things or even give our birds something that's not appropriate, if we were to try to make our own diets at home. So, while we may have good intentions by trying to balance our bird's diet, giving them healthy foods that we would eat, a bird cannot really get the right nutrition from the food that we provide alone. So, the answer really is, a good pelleted diet, meant for the species of bird that you own, is the best thing that you could feed your bird.

What to Do If a Bird Bites You | Pet Bird

Obviously the thing we want to do least, is to reprimand the bird, because all that does is reinforce that behavior. It's our natural behavior when a bird bites to put the bird down or try to fling the bird down, which can be very dangerous for the bird. And then yell at that bird, "Don't do that," and "No." And all that does is reinforce the bird that if he or she bites, "Well, then I get all this attention, so I'm going to keep biting. That brings me more and more attention. My owners pay attention to me. That's a great way to get attention." And that's really the last thing we want to teach a bird. We want to reinforce and reward good behaviors. Standing on your hand. Playing with toys. Playing quietly. Doing interactive things that are positive and socially acceptable. But really try the best we can to ignore unacceptable, often painful behaviors like biting. What are some of the things that we can tell people to do when it comes to teaching birds about not biting? Sarah Inglis: Well, I would say, as you mentioned, loud noises is a bad idea. I can't tell you how many birds I've met that will bite someone and then yell,"Ow, no bite." So they've learned it as a behavior and as a trick and they get a yell out of their owner when they bite them. One of the biggest things I tell people to try to do is, if your bird bites you, try so hard not to even yell out in pain. It's like a dog with a squeaky toy, you know? I squeak this and it made a great noise, I'm going to do it again. Just simply if they bite, you take them, put them down, and walk away. Oftentimes, just the association of them losing your attention when they bite you is enough for them to learn, that maybe it's not such a great idea. Dr. Laurie: Right, it's like time out with a child. It's time out from positive reinforcement. If it's reinforcing to stand on your hand to be with you and they bite you, then you put them down and they don't get that attention. You just don't want to encourage it. And if there's a way that you can anticipate when an animal may bite, when a bird's getting ready to bite; like if you put the bird back in the cage and he or she doesn't want to go back in the cage; if you're leaving the room. Then make that bird have things available, that they can do with their mouth, so that they don't bite you. They can't eat and bite. They can't shred toys and bite. So if you can preempt the behavior from happening, regardless of what the behavior is; biting, screaming and you can provide some sort of distraction for your bird, so that they don't bite; it's better to actually avoid the entire situation, than to get into a punishment type of situation, if a bird should bite.

Cockatiel and Cockatiels - Bathing Your Bird - How to Give a Bird a Bath - Bathing Pet Birds
The Rules of Bathing While various bathing methods abound, there are a few simple rules that apply to bathing all pet birds: Use only plain, clear water. Although some pet supply companies market commercial "bird shampoos", the best and safest way to bathe your bird is with plain water. Birds produce a special oil that they preen their feathers with, and this oil can be stripped through the use of soaps or detergents. This can result in unhealthy feathers and unhappy birds. Only bathe your bird during the warmest part of the day. Wet birds easily get chilled, which can be a serious health hazard. Bathe your bird during a warm part of the day so that your bird's feathers have a chance to dry completely before the temperature drops towards nightfall. Make sure the water is a comfortable temperature. Water that is too hot or cold can shock a bird's system, not to mention causing burns and a host of other serious conditions. Always check the temperature of the water before offering your bird a bath. Many birds prefer their bath water to be lukewarm or room temperature. Never saturate your bird's feathers. In the wild, birds never allow their feathers to become completely soaked through. This can lead to loss of body heat and flight impairment. Except in extreme circumstances, it should never be necessary to completely soak a pet bird. If you always follow these simple rules of bathing, you can ensure that bathtime for your pet will be a safe activity, no matter which bathing techniques you may choose.

They get a lot of exercise. They have to fly from tree to tree. They have to spend their days foraging for nest sites, for mates, for food. They spend a lot of time flying and birds in captivity don't get that opportunity. But it doesn't mean that birds have to just sit around and do nothing. It's really important for birds to get some exercise at home, whether it's just flapping their wings or running across the floor. It's important cardiovascularly, just as it is for us, for their heart muscle to stay developed and for them to have some stamina. It's important to keep their cholesterols down. We know that there are some species like Amazon parrots and Quakers that are much more prone to obesity. They need some added exercise and activity, so we encourage owners to really exercise their birds. Even though we trim wings, I mean what can we do at home to encourage them to get out there? Sarah: Well, some people even go so far as to dedicating entire parts of their home, to almost what I would call, a birdie jungle gym. Ropes and swings and ladders and all kinds of things that the birds can play on. While they're playing they're also getting exercise. They're climbing. They're flapping their wings. They're hanging upside down. They're having a good time. Things like that are actually good for them exercise-wise. Dr. Laurie: So we're providing them when we give them sort of a jungle gym situation or even just a simple swing in their cage, they're getting interaction with us, if we're watching them and playing with them. They're getting exercise and they're moving around. Again, just as it's important for us to exercise to stay healthy and strong, to keep out muscles fit, to keep our weight down and our cholesterol and our triglyceride levels low, it is for birds, as well. It's very important that they exercise, and just because they're not flying around in the wild, doesn't mean that they can't have exercise indoors as captive birds, as well.
