Over this time, Dr. Crandall has come to recognize that the heart does usually warn people of a potential heart attack minutes, days, or even weeks before the event. Swelling Most people believe that swelling of the feet or ankles has to do with standing or sitting too much, but heart failure can also cause fluid to accumulate in the body. This can cause swelling in the legs or abdomen, as well as the feet and ankles. Above are some of the hidden signs that people most likely do not correlate to a heart attack; below, are some of the more common or traditional signs you should also be aware of. Chest discomfort. Shortness of breath Cold sweat Nausea Lightheartedness. Don’t try to tough out the symptoms or ignore them, hoping that they will go away. If your symptoms last more than five or 10 minutes, call 9 1 1 or have someone drive you to your local hospital emergency room. You can also chew and swallow an aspirin, unless you are allergic to them.

A heart disease occurs when heart muscle is deprived of oxygen, either partially or completely, due to clogged coronary arteries. Without enough oxygen and nutrients, the heart muscle begins to die and becomes dysfunctional, which leads to a heart attack and potential cardiac arrest and eventual death. About every 34 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a heart-attack 1.Understand that sometimes there are very subtle or no warning signs. Some heart-attacks are sudden and intense and provide no warning signs or tell-tale symptoms. However, in most cases, there are at least subtle clues that usually get rationalized or marginalized. Early warning signs of heart disease include high-blood pressure, sensation of chronic heartburn, reduced cardiovascular fitness and a vague feeling of malaise or being unwell. These symptoms may start many days or weeks before the heart-muscle gets damaged enough to become dysfunctional. 2.Recognize some of the less common symptoms of heart attack. In addition to the tell-tale symptoms of chest pain, shortness of breath and cold-sweats, there are some less common symptoms characteristic of myocardial infarction that you should be familiar with in order to better gauge the probability of heart-failure. These symptoms include pain or discomfort in other areas of the body, such as the left-arm (or sometimes both), mid-back, front of the neck and/or lower jaw. 3.Call emergency services immediately. Act immediately and call 9-1-1 or other emergency services in your area if you suspect someone is having a heart-attack. Even if they don't display all or even the majority of the signs and symptoms, calling for medical help is the most important action you can take for someone in severe distress. Emergency-medical-services (EMS) can begin treatment as soon as they arrive and are trained to revive someone whose heart has completely stopped. 4.Ask the person if she carries nitroglycerine. People with a history of heart problems and angina (chest and arm pain from heart-disease) are often prescribed nitroglycerine, which is a powerful vasodilator that causes large blood-vessels to relax so more oxygenated blood can reach the heart. Nitroglycerine also reduces the painful symptoms of heart-attack. People often carry their nitroglycerin with them. 5.Administer some aspirin. If you or the heart-attack sufferer has any aspirin, then administer it provided he/she is not younger than 18-years old, give 300-mg aspirin tablet to chew slowly. Aspirin is a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that can reduce heart damage by "thinning" the blood, which means preventing it from clotting. Aspirin also reduces associated inflammation and helps reduce the pain of heart-attack. 6.Initiate CPR if the person stops breathing. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) involves chest compressions in order to help push some blood through the arteries (especially to the brain) combined with rescue breathing (mouth to mouth), which provides some oxygen to the lungs. Keep in mind that CPR has its limitations and doesn't usually trigger a heart to start beating again, but it can provide some precious oxygen to the brain and buy some time before emergency services arrive with their electrical-defibrillators.  NOTE: The materials and the information contained on Natural ways channel are provided for general and educational purposes only and do not constitute any legal, medical or other professional advice on any subject matter. And then we have MSG, Monosodium glutamate another name for that is modified food starch. It is in so many foods, it is easy to avoid if you are shopping but it is very hard to avoid if you are going out to restaurants because they have it in the sauces, dressings, in some of the flavor enhancers, any food that just taste too good typically has MSG on it especially if it is a fast-food restaurant. In addition, an ECG monitor should be attached soon and an IV established. This first medication to give would be aspirin at 324mg chewed orally. Oxygen may be needed, but is not recommended for an O2 saturation reading that is 94% or greater. If the patient has chest pain with a blood pressure of 90 systolic or higher, Nitroglycerin at 0.4mg may be administered. The most important interventions early on for an acute coronary syndrome patient are to provide adequate oxygenation, administer pharmacologic interventions to reduce pain and anxiety, perform a timely assessment using a 12 lead ECG, history and blood labs. Heart disease is the number one killer of women, and research has confirmed that women are less likely to receive appropriate treatment for heart attacks than men. Women are also more likely than men to die in a hospital from a severe heart attack. A study by doctors at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston found that women were less likely to receive angioplasty within ninety minutes after arriving at the hospital, less likely to be given beta blockers, and less likely to receive treatment required to re-establish proper blood flow than were men. On top of that, woman are less likely to have Health Insurance in Texas to cover emergency care. Health insurance premium hikes hurt women more because woman are less likely to be eligible for coverage through employers since women are more likely to work part-time, have lower incomes, and rely on a coverage from a spouse. One of every ten women who work full-time has no health insurance coverage. For woman with health insurance, almost 16 percent have been denied approval or payment for health care. Protect Yourself from Heart Attacks You can arm yourself with the knowledge of how to prevent heart disease, what to do if you have a heart attack, and how to find the best rates for Health Insurance in Texas. Does your lifestyle harm or help your heart? You may need to cut out high-calorie and high-cholesterol foods and smoking, or reduce alcohol and stress. Be aware that obesity puts you at greater risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and insulin resistance, which is a precursor of diabetes. All of these problems increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. According to the American Heart Association, your total cholesterol should be less than 200, and your LDL (bad) cholesterol should range from under 100 to under 160 depending on other risk factors for heart disease. Your HDL (good) cholesterol should be 40 or higher for men, and 50 or higher for women. Triglycerides should be under 150, and your blood pressure should be below 120/80. Research has also shown that at least 30 minutes of physical activity five or more days a week can lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and help you maintain a healthy weight. Even small amounts of exercise, like ten minutes at a time, may offer some benefits. Studies show that even people who achieve a moderate level of fitness are much less likely to die early than those with a low fitness level. Learn the Signs of a Heart Attack. Women can experience all or none of the symptoms of heart attacks when they have an attack. Only an electrocardiogram (EKG), and a blood enzyme test can confirm if you are having or have experienced a heart attack. It is important to know for sure because a silent heart attack still damages your heart, and lessens your heart's ability to survive another attack. Insist on an EKG or an enzyme blood test because it's your life! Heart attack symptoms may include all, some, or none of the following: Abdominal or stomach pain. Clammy sweats, heart flutters, or paleness. Crushing chest pain. Difficulty breathing and shortness of breath. Discomfort, fullness, pressure, squeezing, or tightness in the center of the chest lasting more than a few minutes, or coming and going. Dizziness or nausea. Pain or pressure that spreads to the arms, jaw, neck, shoulders, or upper back. Unexplained anxiety, fatigue or weakness -- especially during exertion. Heart attacks with a lack of symptoms (silent heart attacks) often accompany ischemia. That means that plaque in the arteries has created a long-term shortage of blood and oxygen reaching the heart. You are more likely to have ischemia if you have at least three risk factors for heart disease, and are post-menopausal. A cardiac stress test (a treadmill workout while tracking how well your heart is doing) can detect ischemia. What to Do If You Think You Are Having a Heart Attack. Call 911 and tell the operator you are having heart attack symptoms. Don't try to drive yourself, or ask someone to drive you to a doctor or hospital. Not all hospitals can deal with acute coronary problems, and going to the wrong hospital will delay treatment. The added stress of driving won't do your struggling heart any good, either. You may also need professional emergency personnel if your condition gets worse before you reach the hospital. Chew of crush a full-strength aspirin, and swallow it with a glass of water to prevent further blood clotting, and do as much as possible to reduce the strain on your heart. That's it! Thank you. It's not just what you eat but the way you eat that may help you enjoy food. There is a new study on chocolate for this Medical Edge. "We are going to make a ganache where we fill the shells with and then top them." Shalini Latour makes Latour Chocolats out of her own customized kitchen now, but she said her love for chocolate began. As a child, my mom is from Belgium and every Christmas we would get a package from family in Belgium. It had presents for everyone but all we really wanted was the box of chocolate." That hasn't changed much, she says, even as an adult. Her friend Lori Pierce is a big fan and a big bundle of knowledge when it comes to all the reasons to eat chocolate, just for the health of it "Chocolate lowers your blood pressure, it's great for your heart, it can help prevent strokes, it has something called flavinoids that help your heart, lower blood pressure and act like taking a couple of aspirin a day." It was no surprise to this group of chocolate lovers that a new study says many of us have certain rituals to how we eat chocolate. "Some people take a little bite, let it melt, let it kind of get all the flavors in your mouth, pop the whole thing swallow it." In addition to that however, you may also notice that the way you eat chocolate may be different than someone else, and that could make a difference in how you enjoy it. For example in this study which is published in Psychological Science, they had two groups of people eat chocolate in two different ways. One group had to unwrap a bar, eat half of it, and wrap it back up. The other group got to break off the chocolate, eat it the way they wanted eat it the way they like it and they enjoyed it even more. "It depends on my mood, but I like to enjoy it all, so I pretty much stuff my mouth. I personally let chocolate melt, I don't even chew it." Which kind of reminds us, the only wrong way to eat it, is perhaps not to share it! You can find out more about chocolate at a special chocolate competition.
