Ketosis can occur during fasting, when you reduce the amount of carbs or calories in your diet, during pregnancy or after exercising for a long period of time. Many diets use ketosis as the means of burning fat while maintaining muscle - examples include the Atkins diet and other low-carb diets. This strategy can also lead to decreased hunger. How long does it take to kick your body into fat burning, ketosis mode? Roughly 3-4 days of consuming less than 50 carbs per day, the equivalent of 2 bananas. Benefits include weight loss, seizure prevention, cardiovascular health and type-2 diabetes help, to name a few. How does it Work? When glucose is in short supply, your liver will break down fats into ketones, which are then used throughout your body for energy. Muscles and other tissues in your body use ketones rather than glucose for energy metabolism. In a healthy person, the production of ketones for energy is the body’s natural response to starvation, so this happens when dieting, overnight and during fasting. Glucose or Ketones: Which is More Effective? Many brain diseases, such as epilepsy, are already being treated by the ketogenic diet. The mechanisms to why it helps the brain are still being studied, but there are some possible reasons that ketones seem to be a good energy source for the brain. One major Ketone, beta-hydroxybutyrate, or BHB, provides more energy per unit of oxygen than glucose, and thus may be even more efficient than glucose at providing energy to the brain. (3) -The ketogenic diet has also been found to increase the number of mitochondria in brain cells. In a 2004 study on rats, one group was fed a ketogenic diet while the other was fed a normal diet. A positive impact was found on the gene expression for mitochondrial enzymes in the hippocampus, the memory and learning center of the brain. (4) Ketosis and Body Water Composition: High fat and low carb diets are known to lead to fast weight loss. The fast weight loss is due to water weight being shed (5) -When you decrease carbs, you decrease water storage in the body. Who Can Benefit From Ketosis? If you are looking to shed some body fat, ketosis may be a good tool. This can go along with an exercise regimen as you maintain muscle while losing fat. Ketosis can also benefit those who need to boost brain power as energy may be utilized more effectively in the brain. *Be careful because those with diabetes can get too high of a level of ketones in their blood, which is very dangerous. This occurs due to the low levels of insulin in the blood, which will signal the body to produce excess ketones that will build up in the blood, making the blood pH too low. References: 1. It's become one of the most popular diets around and a lot of people are now starting to switch over to keto. So in today's video I'm gonna give you guys a full unbiased explanation of the ketogenic diet. I want you to understand how it works, how to create your own keto diet meal plan from scratch, and both its positives and its negatives which believe it or not an unbiased explanation of keto is rare to come by due the fact that throughout all of history there have always been those people that would turn a diet almost into a religion or a cult. Thus happened before with Atkins, the South beach diet, And this is happening right now with the ketogenic diet. This ultimately leads to a lot of misconceptions about the diet so there are a lot of things that people are doing plain wrong and you may be making the same mistakes. Let's start with purpose what's the purpose of the ketogenic diet. The goal is to Force the body into a process known as ketosis where fats are predominately burned and used for energy rather than carbohydrates. Macros for the keto diet can vary from plan to plan but you can expect to have anywhere from 60 to 75 percent of calories from fat sometimes even more. Then 15 to 30 percent of calories coming from protein, ans 5 to 10 percent of calories coming from carbs. The most common recommended ketogenic macro split is 20 percent protein 75 percent fat and only 5 percent carbohydrates. This is referred to as the standard ketogenic diet. There is also the cyclical ketogenic diet where you would cycle five days of keto with two days of high carbs. Then you also have the targeted ketogenic diet where you're allowed to have carbs before or after your workouts. And last but not least we have the high-protein ketogenic diet where fat drops down to 60 percent and protein jumps all the way up to 35 percent. Regardless of which ketogenic approach you take the purpose Remains the Same. By drastically reducing carbs and replacing them with healthy fats your body goes into a metabolic state known as ketosis. Now it kills me when certain "Experts" claim that the ketogenic diet isnt a low-carb diet. KILLS ME! If 5 to 10 percent of your total daily calories are coming from carbs and that's not a low-carb diet I don't know what is. Keto is a form of low-carb dieting just like Atkins is a form of low-carb dieting. For the people that treat keto like a religion I can't wait to read your comments. Either way when you're in ketosis your body becomes very very good at burning fat for energy. Fats will be turned into ketones in your liver and those ketones will supply energy to your body and your brain. To put it simply your body becomes better at using fat for energy... not only the fat that you eat but also the fat thats stored on your body. One of the ways that it does this is by keeping insulin levels low. Insulin is a fat storage hormone that is released to help shuttle energy from the food you eat into your cells. The ketogenic diet is known to be one of the best ways besides fasting to drop your insulin levels lower. And low insulin levels are associated with fat loss. However there is a misconception out there that your insulin levels will only go up from carbohydrates. Protein will also spike your insulin levels and if you eat enough fats in one sitting especially the wrong ones like trans fats that can spike your insulin levels as well. A lot of people that do the ketogenic diet just go absolutely overboard with the unhealthy foods that they pack into their plan. Sure macro wise a bunch of cheese mayo and bacon will fit into a 75 percent fat allowance. However for your health these foods are not always the best option. Again occasionally having Foods like this as a treat on the keto diet is perfectly fine however from day to day your 75 percent fat allowance is meant to be used on healthy sources of fats such as avocados coconut oil whole eggs olive oil grass fed butter, nuts and seeds and the fat found in unprocessed meat such as beef Buffalo salmon chicken thighs ground turkey or pork just to name a few. Sources of fat with oleic acid have been shown to be really effective at dropping insulin levels as well. You'll find oleic acid in olive oil and avocados as well as in many other sources. Due to the fact that this diet is so high in fat and moderately high in protein it's very easy to feel full on this plan.

This video shows a good example of keto on a budget meal prep. We found it to be surprisingly easy with the help of some deals at the local super market and a little bit of planning. Keto shopping on a budget is totally doable and actually restricts you to only shopping for essentials, which can be good for those people just getting started on a ketogenic diet, even if budget isn't a concern. This is why in this episode I’m going to walk you through how carb cycling can accelerate your fat loss and also 3 different carb cycling plans so you can start one today. I know I touched upon a Low - Mod - High Carb Cycling Plan as well. So here is an outline to help with having a starting base with "how much" to eat: • A high-carb day will generally have you eating 2-2.5 grams of carbohydrate per pound of body weight.Your protein intake will be around 1 gram per pound, and your fat intake between 0-.15 grams per pound. • A moderate-carb day will call for about 1.5 grams of carbohydrate per pound of body weight. Your protein intake will be between 1-1.2 grams per pound, and your fat intake around .2 grams per pound. • A low-carb day will call for about .5 grams of carbohydrate per pound of body weight. Your protein intake will usually increase to about 1.5 grams per pound, and your fat intake to around .35 grams per pound. • A no-carb day means less than 30 grams of carbohydrate per day. To achieve this, you basically can only eat a few servings of vegetables per day. Keto Meals and what I ate to lose 100 pounds. These are all my breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals, as well as keto snacks. The body shot I give you with me wearing a shirt that I haven't fit into for two years... well, that shirt got thrown away because it was too big on me now! I have lost over 100 pounds, thank God! I will have some before and after pictures to detail my weight loss. My goal is to lose 150 pounds, so 50 more pounds to lose, but my ultimate goal is 100 more pounds for a total of 200 pounds of weight loss! If I lose 50 pounds, I will be smaller than I ever have been as an adult. In this video I am going to share with you 7 high protein low carb foods to include in your diet Tuna Economical, versatile and easily available, tuna is a classic low-carb, high-protein food. A 100g serving has no carbohydrates and 23g of protein. Use tuna on salads or as a topping for baked potatoes or open-faced sandwiches. Tofu Eating it alone like cheese, it doesn’t taste that good, but when you add it to other diet it really makes your dish wonderful. Eating one slice of tofu will give you so much protein and is low in carb. Many people are turning towards it as a major diet. Vegetarian and non vegetarian will both love for it as it can be added to them easily. Poultry Poultry, along with fish, is the leanest animal source of protein. To maximize the health benefits, focus on including low-fat poultry such as chicken breast and turkey in your diet, as other types of poultry such as duck and goose are much fattier--and more expensive. Skin your meat and eat white meat for the highest protein with lowest fat and carbohydrate count. Shrimp can be your main ingredient of a healthy eating plan if you are careful about the manner that you enjoy it. These reports are for two ounces of prepared shrimp, either broiled, or grilled. Take small size of the shrimp as the larger size means more calories. Make sure when eating from outside, it’s not fried or coated in butter. Contrary to popular belief, the best possible way to lose fat or gain muscle is to eat 6 -7 meals each spaced about 2-3 hours apart. Food is fuel for the body and without a steady supply of nutrients your body will retain fat and fail to produce new muscle. Now I realize that many people would say 6 meals is absolutely absurd so the thing I want to stress is they don't have to be sit down meals at all. For example, take a grilled chicken breast sl with a baked potato on the side and you have an excellent small meal with a good protein-carbohydrate ratio. Another great substitute would be a meal replacement of whey protein powder if you dont have the time to make food. Let me take you through the list of benefits of having 6 meals a day as opposed to 3. Boost in Metabolism- 6 meals a day has actually been proven to increase metabolism for several reasons. The main factor is the thermic effect of food which is the calories it takes your body to break down and absorb the food. Foods have a thermic effect range from 3-30% and foods like protein are way up in that 30 percentile followed by carbohydrates in the 20% range. Burning calories just by eating more frequently? Sounds like a great deal to me! Increase in Energy- Eating 6 meals a day helps maintain a balanced blood sugar levels in the body which prevents hunger attacks and will give you an incredible surge of energy while going through the long work day. Lean Muscle Gains- Lastly and most important, 6 meals a day will drastically help you build and maintain muscle. The greater number of meals gives the muscles a constant supply of amino acids which are the building blocks of protein. Putting it all together- The key is to prepare as much as possible the night before. Do all the cooking and preparation before hand so you can incorporate 6 meals in your busy work schedule. What about counting calories? Forget about counting calories!!! That shit is to difficult and unsustainable for the average person! I suggest that you go by portion size. we will say that "portion" is the size of your hand or fist. When you see "protein, carb, vegetable or fruit" it means to eat A LEAST one portion of each. But the beauty of this program, is that even if your trying to lose fat, you can EAT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT! You should NEVER be hungry like some bullshit TV infomercial diet. Get a day by day meal plan for getting year round abs here http://athleanx.com/x/have-abs-year-round When trying to eat for a six pack, people get far too hung up in the details and wind up getting frustrated. If you want to get abs and keep them year round, you absolutely have to find a meal plan approach that you can actually stick to. Think about it, how many diets have you followed to get abs only to not be able to stay on it…and lose your six pack soon after? If you rely on carbohydrate restrictive eating plans, obsessive food measuring, macro overcomplication, etc you are just making your chances of getting ripped that much harder. In this video, I show you a simple eating technique that you can apply to any meal to ensure that you are on the right track. You divide your plate and fill it with proteins, fibrous carbs and starchy carbs (in amounts explained) while never steering away from the all important high quality incidental fats. Start off by occupying half of your plate with protein. You can choose whatever protein source you prefer the most whether it be chicken, steak, turkey, fish, lentils or any other vegetarian source if desired. You then decide the remaining half based on your given physique goals. If you are overtly overweight and need to start dropping a substantial amount of body fat, you definitely will want to not avoid carbs however you would choose mostly from fibrous sources. There are so many options to choose from but my favorite are zucchini and onions, broccoli rabe, braised carrots, and grilled asparagus to name a few. If you aren’t battling weight issues and instead are focused on building lean, ripped athletic muscle you would divide that remaining half with healthy sources of complex or starchy carbs. Again, my favorite here are sweet potatoes, pasta, and brown rice to name a few. The key to eating for a six pack (and keeping it) is choosing from foods that you actually like eating. There is no faster way to giving up on your goal of getting a six pack than by forcing yourself to eat foods you hate. Even worse, making your meal preparation a ten step process if likely to make you want to quit pretty quick as well. Harvard completed a study that explored just how impressive the results of a low carb diet can be for weight loss, in comparison to a low-f diet that people tend to rely on for all of their weight loss needs. By now, most people are aware how excellent low carb diets can be for rapid weight loss, but do they offer any other health benefits? Yes, they do, and that is what makes a low carbohydrate diet such an attractive option when deciding what path to follow. Additional Health Benefits The European Journal of Clinical Nutrition explains what other effects a low carb diet has on the human body. Medical professionals have been using it since the 20’s to help epilepsy sufferers reduce the symptoms, furthermore in some cases has rendered the use of medication unnecessary. There have also been strides made in proving that a low carb diet can be used as a therapeutic tool for a number of other conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome, the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, a number of strains of cancer, diabetes, and even acne. The point of the study was to determine whether the preconceived notions surrounding ketogenic diets have prevented doctors from relying on it as a therapeutic method. The Mayo Clinic has also explored the other effects that are seen when on a low carb diet. While citing many of the same issues listed by the EJCN, the Mayo Clinic has added cholesterol levels and high blood pressure to our list. There are variations on what is considered a low carb diet Anything from 20 grams to 150 grams can be considered low carb. 150 grams will not kick start ketosis to burn fat stores that actually requires less than 50 grams of carbohydrates per day. Dr. Judith Wylie-Rosett led a study that makes mention of The American Diabetes Association belief that a low-carbohydrate, low-fat diet can be used to achieve improvement in both weight and metabolism, pointing to the Mediterranean diet as evidence. The Mediterranean Diet This is an interesting point because it’s well documented that the residents of countries in the Mediterranean have higher life expectancies, and while they do eat carbs, their carb intake is much lower than it would be in the United States, or the United Kingdom. The Mayo Clinic breaks down the Mediterranean diet which hinges on eating plant-based foods, nuts whole grains, and legumes. Olive oils are used in place of butter, and herbs and spices replace salt. It is more common to eat white means and leave the red meat for the odd occasion, and meals are spent with family and friends and consumed over a few hours. WHO has a list of life expectancies for every country and the United States average is 79, while Greece is 81, Spain is 83, and so is Italy. Conclusion There are a number of low carb diets that you can follow; you can be as strict or as lenient as you wish. Whether you are looking to lose weight, maintain muscle, or reduce your risk of heart disease. In addition to the benefits listed above, a low carb diet can also serve as an appetite suppressant. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition explored the reasons why concluding that the high protein diet could be an explanation as to why. Additionally, another similar study saw that participants on a diet that was high in protein and fat, but low in carbohydrates didn’t have the same food cravings as the participants did that were on a low-calorie, low-fat diet. This is because greatly reducing carbs and eliminating sugars, actually helps to regulate blood sugars so that the appetite is naturally suppressed eliminating those horrid out of control food cravings.
