The TRUTH About the DANGERS of Birth Control | Weight Gain, Depression & Appetite Changes
In this episode of Abbey’s Kitchen, Abbey is joined by our fav dieter, Debbie! Today Debbie is concerned that birth control is poisoning us and contributes to a ton of toxins in our body. Debbie claims the pill causes blood clots, stroke, depression, loss of libido and even weight gain. Abbey admits that contraceptives can be a very controversial and complex topic, and in the past the pill used to contain scary high doses of estrogen, but over time, scientists have developed much safer birth control pills that have been developed with fewer side effects. Debbie is still not convinced and blames everything on toxic hormones like estrogen and progesterone. In actuality, Abbey shares with Debbie a 2014 Cochrane review found that the combination of estrogen and progesterone found no significant difference in weight gain, but the largest difference in weight gain was about 4 pounds after 12 months. Debbie still sees this as significant and wants to KILL THE PILL. Abbey also found that those who gained the weight were in the less estrogen group, which counters the theory that estrogen causes the weight gain. So, then we assume progesterone is the culprit? However, another review found that the progesterone-only pill did not cause a significant gain weight. However, the only method of progesterone birth control that did cause weight gain was: depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate which found girls were gaining an average of 10 pounds in one year. Debbie still believes that all birth control is bad, and mentioned that her friend’s appetite increased and they bloated up. Abbey looked at the research and found that the majority of studies on appetite were solely perception based. Granted, high doses of estrogen tend to cause water retention, but most pills have pretty low doses. Recent studies have concluded that birth control doesn’t cause significant bloating. Debbie also claimed that birth control causes depression. Abbey checked out the same Danish study and it found that when they observed one million women taking birth control for 6 years, there was a significant correlation between birth control and clinical depression. This is not a new theory, but sadly women’s health is not always at the forefront in the medical community and sadly there’s a lot of politics that come into play. Debbie is no feminist but she’s sure that if men had to take the pill, there wouldn’t be all these side effects. Finally, Abbey and Debbie agree on something. Abbey has found some research with the male pill, but because of the ton of side effects, a lot of that research has been put on hold. It’s a man’s world. Abbey and Debbie both agree that there’s a lot more that needs to be done, but at least studies like the Danish one are starting to lift the veil and giving women a voice and more control over their choices. At the end of the day, it’s a risk and benefit analysis and it’s up to you to decide for yourself whether you can tolerate the side effects and whether it outweigh the risk of having an unwanted pregnancy. As always, Abbey recommends speaking with your doctor about your concerns and continue to read up on new studies because there’s a lot more we need to know to understand all the ways hormones impact our health. Water Retention and PCOS
Water retention is a big deal with PCOS and hormone imbalance. It can make us feel fat, bloated, thick and unhealthy. Maybe you’ve gained 5 pounds in one day, your waist is much less defined, your rings no longer fit, and your shoes feel tighter. If you’re struggling with fluid retention you should know you’re not alone. Hi, I'm Robin Nielsen, the Chief Wellness Officer here at Insulite Health. I’m so glad you’re here. We’ve found that water retention, also known as edema or fluid retention is a very hot topic for women with PCOS and hormone imbalance, so we want you to understand what is happening and show you how you have all the power to reduce fluid retention in your body. And it can happen at any age. I can tell when I’m retaining water. Rings that were loose I can’t even put on my fingers. My face looks a little puffier and my shoes are tight. That’s because the extremities are the first to retain fluids due to less circulation in those areas…. When I was younger this happened for me all the time, and it’s a main reason I gained weight so easily. But as I learned why this happens and how to avoid it, I rarely retain water any more. You might have “cankels” – swollen ankles - where it’s hard to see the bones in your ankles. My mother and great grandmother had this symptom – and it’s so important to address because it’s a serious indication that something’s not right. Some other symptoms of fluid retention are: aching in the affected areas, feeling stiff in the joints, rapid weight gain over days or weeks, unexplained weight fluctuations, when you press the skin it may hold an indent for a few seconds. Fluid retention, bloating, and water retention are three terms for the same condition – excess fluids accumulating in your body’s cavities. Women with PCOS often report this troubling symptom and as we age it can become more and more of a problem. Imbalanced hormones, especially estrogen, might be affecting your body’s normalizing mechanisms, or it could be a side effect of birth control pills, which is one of the more common PCOS drugs. There can be many causes of fluid retention: insulin resistance, hot weather, standing for long periods of time, hormone fluctuations – particularly estrogen, the birth control pill, nutrient deficiencies, elevate cortisol (stress), chronic venous insufficiency where the weakened valves in the veins of the legs fail to efficiently return blood to the heart and certain medications. Insulin tells your kidneys to hang on to sodium and water which in turn causes fluid retention. So it’s critical to implement the PCOS 5-Element System to reduce fluid retention: 1) the right nutrients, it’s been found that many nutrients like magnesium, chromium, vanadium, carnitine, the B vitamins and more help to improve insulin sensitivity, reduce stress and support blood vessels better, 2) the right food – a diet high in refined, processed carbohydrates causes an spike in water retention, but a well-balanced whole food diet reduces insulin and it’s aging effects, 3) movement – using the right types of movement to improve insulin sensitivity and to balance hormones, 4) understand cravings so you’re not tempted to indulge in foods and toxic behaviors that don’t support you, 5) get some support! We need each other to heal and be well. Here are some next steps for you. Be sure to take the PCOS Quiz here on our website to see if you may have PCOS. NO PERIOD FOR 5 YEARS?! My Implanon/Nexplanon Contraceptive Implant Experience
No period - no joke! What is Implanon or Nexplanon? What does it do, how does it work, and what are the side effects? How can this contraceptive arm implant help you, and does it cause acne? Watch for my Implanon experience, thoughts and more! ► FOLLOW ME ▷▷▷ IG: http://instagram.com/jess_bunty ▷ FB: http://www.facebook.com/jessbunty ▷ WEB: http://www.jessbunty.com Hey guys! Here's another weird one for you! Please keep in mind this is my personal experience and my own opinion about this method of birth control. Implanon/Nexplanon isn't for everyone, and I've heard some horror stories! But it's worked for me, and I just wanted to share that with you. Here's some more information about it: - Implanon is a contraceptive rod, about the size of a match, containing the hormone etonogestrel, which is similar to the naturally occurring hormone progesterone. - It is the most effective reversible method of contraception available. It is more than 99.9% effective. - Unless side effects are severe, you should try to keep Implanon in for at least three months, as any side effects will often settle in this time. (From http://www.fpv.org.au/for-you/contraception/long-acting-reversible-contraception-larc/contraceptive-implant-implanon) Implanon is a form of birth control rod implant. It's a simple process to have it implanted, and it must be done by a trained professional. The implant lasts for 3 years. You may get mild, or severe side effects, or none at all. Definitely keep in touch with your doctor and ask them any questions you may have about the insertion, removal, or process. Bloating before and during a period may result from changes in levels of the intercourse hormones progesterone and estrogen. About a week before a woman's period starts, levels of the hormone progesterone fall. Reduced levels of progesterone cause the uterus to shed its lining, which is what causes menstrual bleeding. FOLLOW OUR FOOTLOOSE HERE, google plus: https://goo.gl/Duc6BX blogger: dfootloose.blogspot.com twitter: https://twitter.com/FOOTdLOOSE tumblr: dfootloose.tumblr.com pinterest: www.pinterest.com/dfootloose A study found that women retained most water and experienced the worst bloating on the first day of their period. How to relieve bloating There are many lifestyle changes that a woman can make that may help to reduce water retention. In turn, these changes may help relieve the symptoms of period bloating. 1. Avoid salty foods The sodium in salt can increase the amount of water a person's body retains. Avoiding salty foods may help decrease water retention and improve period bloating. The American Heart Association recommend people aim to limit their salt intake to 1,500 milligrams (mg) per day. Many processed foods contain salt, so cooking meals at home using only fresh ingredients is one way to avoid excess salt. 2. Eat potassium-rich foods Eating foods rich in potassium may help reduce period bloating. Research shows potassium decreases sodium levels and increases urine production. In this way, potassium may help reduce water retention and improve period bloating. Potassium-rich foods that may reduce period bloating include: • dark leafy greens, such as spinach • sweet potato • bananas • avocados • tomatoes 3. Drink lots of water Many people believe drinking more water can help to improve water retention, by improving kidney function. If this is the case, drinking more water may help to improve period bloating. Nevertheless, drinking more water improves hydration, which generally improves the way a person feels. For this reason, drinking more water is always worth a try. 4. Avoid refined carbohydrates Refined carbohydrates, such as white flour and processed sugars, cause spikes in blood sugar levels. This increases the level of insulin in the blood, which causes the kidneys to retain more sodium. Increased sodium levels lead to more water retention. For those looking to reduce water retention and improve period bloating, it is best to avoid refined carbohydrates. 5. Exercise regularly A 2013 study found that regular exercise might help improve PMS symptoms. As period bloating is a PMS symptom, regular exercise may help to reduce it. To stay healthy, people should aim to get 2.5 hours of moderate exercise a week. 6. Consider the birth control pill A 2008 study suggests the birth control pill may help improve period bloating. However, some women report that the birth control pill makes them feel more bloated. The effect of the pill can vary from woman to woman, so it is best to discuss the birth control pill with a doctor and to try a few different types to see which one works best for managing PMS. Water Retention: How to Reduce Bloating from Sodium- Thomas DeLauer
Water Retention: How to Reduce Bloating from Sodium- Thomas DeLauer… http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com is where it's at! Dandelion Root: Dandelion is the name of Taraxacum, a large family of flowering plants found everywhere in the world. Dandelion acts as a natural diuretic, which is any substance that promotes diuresis, that is, the increased production of urine. Dandelion causes kidneys to increase the volume of urine and expel the extra salt accumulated inside the body. By stimulating more urine production, dandelion affects the blood volume and water balance in your body, causing excess fluid to move out of the body tissues. Additionally, dandelion contains taraxasterol. The diuretic effect of dandelion is believed to be due to taraxasterol. This plant sterol removes fluids from spaces between tissues and the skin. Taraxasterol is also anti-allergic, anti-oxidant, and anti-inflammatory. (1,2,3) Magnesium: Magnesium is important in the body because of its affinity for phosphates in biological systems. For this reason, it is needed for any biochemical reaction involving ATP (Adenosine triphosphate), the chief energy molecule in the cell. Magnesium is also required for synthesizing DNA and RNA. In humans, the mineral can be found mostly in the skeleton and inside the cells. Exercise: Aside from diuretics, such as dandelion and magnesium, exercise can also play a role in the reduction of water retention. Exercise does not need to be intense - simple, regular exercises are appropriate, and you should take a few minutes of rest while exercising to prevent the development of exercise-induced edema. Swimming: Swimming/treading water helps to reduce symptoms of edema. The force exerted by muscles against the pressure of water helps in moving the fluid buildup from tissues. This is favorable for those with edema because there is less stress on muscles and joints. Walking: The leg contractions while walking, helps in releasing the trapped fluid out of the tissues. It also improves blood circulation that flushes out the excess fluids. References: 1) Dandelion and Water Retention - How it Helps - ProgressiveHealth.com. (n.d.). Can Birth Control Pills Cause Weight Loss or Weight Gain
Can Birth Control Pills Cause Weight Loss or Weight Gain? Can birth control help in weight loss? This is a question that is being asked quite often. As you know, there are women who believe that it can cause weight gain, although there is no substantial evidence to prove it. In fact, research indicates that there is no link between birth control and weight loss. Studies On Birth Control Pills And Weight Loss. Certain brands of birth control pills have a formulation that is different from others. As you may know, most pills contain the hormones estrogen and progestin. These particular brands use a form of progestin hormone (known as drospirenone) that is different from the type usually used . It is claimed that this hormone has the ability to work with the chemistry of your body by affecting excess water and sodium. So, what does this mean? It means that it may be able to counteract bloating by acting as a diuretic. Bloating is a common side effect that is experienced by a large number of women who take contraceptive pills. Therefore, the truth is that the only weight that you can expect to lose is that which is caused by water retention. When you are on the standard pill, the maximum weight you can expect to gain is one or two pounds. Experts say that the amount of weight lost while on birth control pills would be the same. They believe that it is highly unlikely that you would lose 20 pounds with the help of a pill. A study with 300 women on a certain birth control pill brand showed results where they were able to lose two pounds after taking the pill for 6 months. Sadly, the effects did not last long as it was found that the weight returned after about a year . Can Birth Control Cause Weight Loss? No matter how much you want to believe it, birth control does not cause weight loss. The fact is that the pills simply decrease or retain the water in your body. It is nothing but the weight of water. The amount of fat you have in your body remains the same. It is best to stop associating birth control with weight loss. If you want to shed those unwanted pounds, choose a healthier and more effective way. The side effects of birth control depend on how your body reacts to the hormonal changes. As mentioned, weight gain caused by birth control occurs only in some women. In most cases, it is those who are prone to quick weight gain that experience this side effect. It is believed that the number of women who gain weight is equal to the number that experience weight loss while taking birth control pills. Like the belief that birth control can cause you to gain extra pounds, it is a total myth that it can make you lose weight. Please subscribe our channel.

Let's Talk About the Hormonal IUD
I get asked frequently about my thoughts on IUD's. Naturally, I wanted to start a conversation about them. Here's is the first video of two (probably more) where I talk about Mirena and Skyla, two hormonal IUD's. In an upcoming video I'll cover the Paragard. I want an open, honest discussion about birth control because I feel like so often we get a one-sided, back of the box description of them. Share your thoughts and experiences, ask me you questions and let's get this conversation rolling! Additional Mirena/Skyla information: How do they insert it? -You have to go into a health care office. They will insert speculum, clean vagina and cervix with antiseptic, then use a special instrument to align cervical canal and uterine cavity, and another to measure depth of uterus. Then they’ll fold down the arms, place it in an applicator tube, place that tube in cervical canal and place IUD in uterus, then trim string so it doesn’t hang too far down in your vagina. You may experience dizziness, fainting, nausea, low blood pressure, slower heart rate, and often you will be asked to continue to lay down for a few minutes. Upkeep? -After each period you have to check for the string -Sometimes you will have a check up one month after insertion to make sure it is sitting right and you don’t have any infection. Side effects that need to be addressed by doctor: severe cramps, pelvic pain, extreme dizziness, heavy or ongoing bleeding, vaginal sores, foul discharge, severe pain in side or lower stomach, pale skin, weakness, easy bruising or bleeding, fever chills, or other signs of infection, pain during sex, sudden numbness/weakness on one side of body, severe headache, confusion, problems with vision, sensitivity to light, jaundice, allergic reaction Less serious side effects: irregular periods, changes in patter or flow, breakthrough bleeding, or heavier bleeding following insertion, back pain, headache, nervousness, mild dizziness, nausea, vomiting, bloating, breast tenderness or pain, weight game, acne, changes in hair growth, mood changes, loss of libido, mild itching, skin rash, puffiness in face, hands, ankles or feet. Precautions - Ectopic Pregnancy, General Pregnancy (may cause spontaneous abortion or preterm labor), pelvic inflammatory disease, Irregular Bleeding and Amenorrhea, Perforation (total or partial penetration/embedment of Mirena in uterus or cervix), Expulsion (Mirena coming out of uterus), Ovarian Cysts, Breast Cancer (if you have/had or have a potential of getting you should avoid hormonal BC because some breast cancers or hormone-sensitive) Do not get if you have abnormal vaginal bleeding, uncontrolled pelvic infection, a condition affecting shape of uterus, past, present or possible breast cancer, liver problems, cervical or uterine cancer, weak immune system, have had a serious pelvic infection following pregnancy or abortion, history of pelvic inflammatory disease, recent abnormal pap smear. Let your doctor know if you have had any of these. Today, however, low-dosage pills with few adverse health effects are the norm. That said, the potential for serious side effects exists any time hormonal therapy is used to manipulate the reproductive system. Birth Control Pill Side Effects. In clinical trials, common birth control pill side effects included: acne - although in certain cases, birth control pills can help reduce acne as well nausea vomiting tenderness or enlarging of the breasts bloating severe headaches decrease in sex drive Interestingly enough, weight gain was found not to be a common side effect of birth control pills despite widespread belief to the contrary. Other side effects, while occurring very infrequently, are potentially quite serious and should be monitored for. They include: depression migraine headaches lumps on the breasts heavy bleeding high blood pressure (hypertension) high cholesterol blood clots chest pains liver damage allergic reactions Birth Control Pill Side Effects. Many of these more severe side effects are mainly the result of your body's inability to cope with the estrogen hormone. If that is the case, switching to a progestin-only pill, also known as the "mini-pill," could be a solution. Progestin-only pills, if used properly, tend to be every bit as effective as combined estrogen/progestin pills. If you experience any of the above serious symptoms or think you may be prone to them, consult your doctor before taking any sort of hormonal birth control. In the meantime, you can use non-hormonal barrier options such as condoms combined with a diaphragm and spermicidal lotion. While perhaps not quite as effective as hormone-based oral contraceptives, barrier forms such as condoms have the positive advantage of also protecting against sexually transmitted diseases. Finally, there may be times when a certain birth control method just "doesn't feel right." If that is the case, be sure to consult your doctor. While it may not be a medical side-effect, per say, there may be some other related problem your doctor can help diagnose and treat. How To Lose Weight Gained From Birth Control Pills
VISIT HERE FOR VIDEO GUIDE http://tiny.cc/bfqdzx How To Lose Weight Gained From Birth Control Pills Official Venus Factor Website : just read what some of the thousands of women say about the venus factor.Sheila K. - Milroy, PennsylvaniaVital Stats: Age 40, weight lost 50 lbs, inches lost: 10" on waist, 9" on hips.At the beginning of 2012 I was doing what I always do, searching for a workout program to help me lose the weight I had gained the previous year. Every year it was the same goal and that was to reach 135 lbs by my birthday in October. The only difference was that this was my fortieth birthday and I wanted to enter my forties in the best shape of my life. I have spent the last 17 years since having kids trying to lose weight. So working out and dieting is nothing new for me. Some years I had success but it was like a roller coaster up and down. This year when I stepped on the scale I weighed 173 lbs and I decided that it was time to take control. I spent January through May doing different exercise programs but only managed to lose 13 lbs, how pathetic is that?I was busting my butt with cardio and I didn't seem to make any improvement in the appearance of my body. I realized that my eating was a major issue and I started searching online for how low I could go without putting my body into "starvation mode" and that is how I happen to come across the Venus Index. I listened to a short video that intrigued me and I then purchased VI 1. I started on June 17th at lbs and my first week was just getting through the fasting and then the 2nd week was when I started the actual workouts. From that point on, I never looked back and I never strayed. 6 months later, I am 50 lbs lighter and 37 lbs of that was lost through using the Venus Index and Eat Stop Eat. And the best part was that not only did I meet my goal but I surpassed it and weighed in at 131 lbs for my 40th birthday. The best birthday present ever!Barabara H., MexicoVital Stats: Age 44, weight lost 50lbs, inches lost: 9" on waist, 10" on hips. After following the program to the T, here I am now, three months after, 44 years old with the same waist I had in college, with a ten month old baby, fit and strong as ever and with the toned body I always dreamed of (without exercising, of course). I look better than most of the girls I see at he gym that are less than half my age. Stomach Bloating
Stomach Bloating There are two general causes for a bloated stomach. Eating too much/eating too fast Eating things the stomach has a problem digesting Both of these cause the stomach to produce gases at a much higher rate than normal, and stomach bloating is the result. The first one, eating too much, is usually a matter of self discipline and doesn't need to be covered here. But there's lots to talk about with that second one. Certain kinds of foods tend to cause bloating, if not all the time, then at least part of the time. They include Fiber from vegetables, fruits and beans. Normally these are healthy and they digest without a problem. But if you eat too much of any of them at one time, stomach bloating will probably result. Carbonated drinks. All that foam and fizz you see in the glass keeps happening in your stomach too. Speaking of drinks, many alcoholic beverages can cause stomach bloating. Processed foods and salt. It doesn't take much sodium to give your stomach a bloated feeling. A lack of protein in your diet may cause frequent stomach bloating. But keep in mind, it's also possible to eat too much protein, which can cause stomach bloating too. Use common sense. Fatty food, especially in large quantities, takes longer to move through the stomach and into the intestine, which causes stomach bloating and discomfort. If you experience stomach bloating three or more times a week, you should probably consider making some changes in your diet. Also, check with your doctor to see if you may be developing a more serious problem like Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Besides the foods already mentioned, there are other conditions and circumstances that tend to produce stomach bloating, including some that are not under your control, or are only partially under your control. Lactose intolerance Lactose intolerance, simply put, means that your stomach won't tolerate, i.e. digest, lactose. Lactose, or milk sugar, comes from dairy products. Lactose breaks down the sugar in the milk, and just one ounce of undigested milk can produce as much as one gallon of gas. Considering that your stomach generally only contains room for about one quart, you can bet that all that gas is going to cause a serious stomach bloating problem. If you are lactose intolerant, and you eat or drink dairy products, gassiness and bloating are likely to follow. Avoiding dairy products will prevent stomach bloating. Meanwhile, a deficiency of lactose may also trigger stomach bloating sometimes. For instance, buffalo milk has no lactose, and without it, the stomach and won't digest the milk properly. You'll get approximately the same stomach bloating described above. Granted, buffalo milk is not something most people are likely to drink, but it serves as a example of how lactose deficiency can create stomach bloating discomfort. Food allergies Any number of food allergies can cause stomach bloating too. In this case though, it's not as much a matter of poor digestion as it is an allergic reaction. If you eat something you're allergic to, you'll probably get stomach bloating along with other reactions like hives, runny nose, breathing problems, etc. But these are reactions of the immune system involving the whole body, not just the stomach. Stomach bloating and wheat products Eating too many wheat products can cause stomach bloating. Gluten, a protein present in wheat and bread, may cause a burning sensation and gassiness. Inflammation and stomach bloating Diseases that cause gastrointestinal obstruction or inflammation may lead to stomach bloating. These diseases include Crohn's disease and colon cancer. Finally, women who are taking contraceptive pills, or may be at certain points of their menstrual cycle may also experience stomach bloating or bloating in other parts of their body. It's best to consult a doctor in these situations.

Can birth control pills stop my period from happening in the first week that I take them?
Birth control can definitely affect your periods or your cycles depending on the type you're taking and when the first dose is taken during your cycle. Talk with the doctor who prescribed your medication and they can give you the best information what's normal and what isn't as far as your spotting goes based on their knowledge of what you're on. Can consumption of progesterone cause irregular periods? - Dr. Teena S Thomas
Continuous consumption of any medicine for that matter, they can have side effects. So it has to be appropriately discussed with your gynecologist and taken. Now progesterone tablets if continuously conceived, can have bloating sensation, abnormal hair growth, or breast tenderness. These are the small things which can be noted. Usually for a period of 5 days, they are not noted with any major side effects. But continuously taking that, unnecessarily delaying periods and all that, maybe a cause of worry. But when there is progesterone deficiency and all that, and when it is given, unlikely to cause any major problems. Definitely bloating, water collection, breast tenderness, all this has to be checked, ruled out, see the gynecologist, see if it is there, can be appropriately managed, no major things to worry, but these are the things which can be a point of worry, but the best person to answer this would be the gynecologist, who has started it, because for what reason it is started, that is more important than these all small things.

Hormonal Imbalance in Women - Chronic Fatigue, Stress and Weight Gain
Hormonal Imbalance in Women - Chronic Fatigue, Stress and Weight Gain: http://mariahdolan.com/adrenal-fatigue/. If you're gaining weight, fatigued all the time, can't focus, are stressed/anxious/irritable or depressed, have ruthless PMS symptoms wreaking hormone havoc and you have no idea why because you're doing all the right things, you need to watch this video. Secondly, if you've been shuffled around from doctor to doctor telling you there's nothing wrong with you and you're normal, you need to watch this video. You may have adrenal fatigue if you allow stress to go unchecked. Today I'm getting personal. So personal, that I'm sharing all my private lab tests with you. So what do my lab tests have to do with you and how can you benefit from this information? #1. Because I'm the perfect example of somebody who was doing all the right things, and still got sick. VIDEO TRANSCRIPT Over the past year, I've been struggling with some health issues that I didn't want to tell you about, primarily because I'm a physical therapist, personal trainer and a health coach. How can I possibly have any health issues? I'm supposed to be the model of optimum health, right? But here's the deal. I'm human too. Just because I have a fancy health education doesn't make me immune to disease. So I decided that if I withhold my personal health struggles from you, what a disservice that is. What if right now, you're experiencing the same symptoms that I have? I want you to be able to use me as an example of what to do, and what NOT to do, so that you don't have to struggle like I did. One year ago, I started getting tired, like reeeeeeeallly tired. My alarm clock would go off, and I would just lay there and think, "oh my gosh, I will cut off my right arm for 20 more minutes of sleep!" The problem was, this incredible sense of fatigue I had, never went away, even if I got enough sleep. So that was warning sign #1. Eventually, I'd roll out of bed, drag my sluggish body downstairs to workout before my kids woke up. I'd complete my workout, and literally feel like I did nothing. Seriously, not a drop of sweat on my body, not even that glow that you get like when you just worked out. So that was warning sign #2. Warning sign #3: I started gaining weight. Now this was the most frustrating symptom of all, because I was doing all the right things. I was eating clean, I was working out, yet I was storing fat around my midsection and couldn't help it. Warning sign #4 I had constant PMS symptoms. (Again, another fun one.) I had breast tenderness and swelling, bloating, water retention, irritability, and the strongest high-fat high-carb cravings I've ever had. The best way I can describe it is always feeling like you're just about to get your period. That's how I felt...all. the. time. Warning sign #5 I started spotting between periods. Then my periods started getting closer together, then every 2 weeks, to where I eventually never stopped bleeding. And this went on for 2 months. So you can imagine this was the symptom that finally did me in. It was a physical symptom that I couldn't make an excuse for. So I went to my doctor like most people would where she ran some blood tests, and there was nothing wrong with me. Then I went to my gynecologist about the prolonged bleeding, she ordered a vaginal ultrasound and yep, nothing wrong with me. She prescribed birth control pills, 20 mcg of estrogen per day, to get me back on track. And I'll tell you, something just didn't sit right with me that we were throwing something at my symptoms without knowing why. Plus birth control pills aren't recommended for women over the age of 35. And yep, I'm over 35! So here I was, feeling like crap, with nothing wrong with me. So, I started doing all the wrong things like eating sugar and drinking caffeine because I was desperately trying to borrow energy to get through my day. Of course this only caused more weight gain and made my energy problems worse. That's when I finally decided to find a naturopathic doctor who I hoped would listen, and run some unconventional tests to figure out why I was feeling so crummy.
