Factory farms, antibiotics and superbugs: Lance Price at TEDxManhattan

13:05
http://tedxmanhattan.org http://saveantibiotics.org How antibiotics are being used to compensate for the overcrowded, stressful conditions on industrial farms and how that's creating superbugs that threaten public health. Lance Price is a public health researcher who works at the interface between science and policy to address the growing crisis of antibiotic resistance. In the laboratory, Dr. Price uses cutting-edge DNA sequencing to trace the origins of new antibiotic-resistant pathogens. By analyzing the genomes of bacteria found in humans, food, and livestock, Dr. Price and his colleagues have traced the origins of new superbugs to industrial livestock production. Dr. Price and his colleagues have also begun to broaden the scope of foodborne disease to include urinary tract infections caused by foodborne E. coli. In the policy arena, Dr. Price works with grassroots organizations, NGOs, and policymakers to develop science-based policies to curb antibiotic abuse in food-animal production and stem the emergence of new superbugs. Dr. Price's work was selected by Discover Magazine as one of the top 100 science stories of 2012. His research has also been covered by top-tier media around the world, including the BBC, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Scientific American, Men's Journal, and Fitness Magazine, among others. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Manure River - Ash Ridge, Wisconsin

00:21
Up on top of Ash Ridge, in Southwestern Wisconsin, snow melts on a corn field where manure was spread in the late fall, forming a flowing river of poo, (likely containing antibiotics and antibiotic-resistant bacteria) at the beginning of a long and smelly journey down to Camp Creek, the Kickapoo River, the Wisconsin River, down the Mississippi and out to the Gulf of Mexico.

WHAT A DAIRY FARM DOES WITH ANIMALS THAT DIE - PART OF FARMING NO ONE TALKS ABOUT - DFD DAILY 19

04:22
So last night I had a calf die. I had it on 2 rounds of antibiotics trying to get it better but it finally lost the battle. In the video I explain what happens from that point. How I get rid of it, where it goes, what it gets turned into etc. Thanks for watching. I would appreciate a like and a subscribe or a share or something lol, thanks. Instagram.com/boehmfamilydairy Instagram.com/df_dev Twitter.com/DirtFarmerDev Snapchat D-Thrash Younow.com/DFDEV Devin Boehm is a first generation dairy farmer from Wisconsin, USA. He started farming on his own in 2014 after buying a few heifer calves. In 2015, once he graduated from UW Madison Farm and Industry Short Course, he bought a herd of cows and started his own operation with nothing but a drive and desire to achieve his goal of running his own farm. Starting from the city and having no family background in the industry, we are here nearly 3 years later and he is documenting his journey through DFD Daily.

#AskAFarmer about antibiotic use

01:35
Healthy animals are the foundation of a safe and abundant food supply. Sometimes it’s necessary for farmers to treat cows with antibiotics when cows are ill, just as people sometimes need medication when they are sick. Dairy farms only use U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved antibiotics and work with their veterinarians to administer them. Milk from a cow being treated with antibiotics is separated to ensure it does not go into the milk supply. All milk is tested for antibiotics upon delivery at the dairy plant. Any milk that tests positive cannot be sold to the public. Festival Foods dietitian Lauren Tulig went to a farm to learn more: http://bit.ly/2p6xE7S We encourage you to #AskAFarmer about dairy farming and food. The Trip for Life Episode 17: The Calder Bros. Dairy

14:35
I visit a small, sustainable dairy with it's own forage and marketing operation in Southeastern Michigan; the Calder Brothers Dairy. Unsolicited advertisement; I've drank their milk for a while, and not just because it's delicious. The animals at the Calder dairy are kept very, very well, with good diets and a clean environment taking the place of daily antibiotics and artificial hormones. That's not all that the Calder dairy, or other small dairies like it, have to offer, though. This video may contain toxic levels of cuteness.

Antibiotic Free Animal Agriculture

31:00
Cosabody-10 is a new technology developed at the University of Wisconsin to help meet consumer’s desire for antibiotic free animal products. More significantly, this technology may help address the antibiotic resistance challenge in animal agriculture. In layman’s terms, their solution includes vaccinate laying hens, that in turn create antibodies in their eggs. These eggs are then sprayed on the feed of animals that producers want to protect. In essence, the antibodies allow the immune systems of animals that consumed the egg product to better fight disease. Dr. Jordan Sand will discuss the problem, their solution—including some of the science—and their efforts to commercialize this technology.

Deciding to Become An Organic Dairy - Mobile Minute

01:24
Jon Bansen descends from a long line of dairymen. When he took over from his father, his was not an organic farm. That meant that he relied upon chemical fertilizers to maintain his pasture, pesticides to control the pests and antibiotics when the cows got sick, among other common practices. As Bansen explains in this clip (filmed in 2007), industrial agriculture involves a lot of 'lotions and portions' and has more to do with industry than with biology. When Jon Bansen switched over to organic, he was able to pay closer attention to nature and farm in a much more ecological and humane manner. Note: it's good to see names on dairy cows in place of numbers. No, they are not pets, but it shows a respect for livestock that is also an important part of the equation. Bansen considers his decision to switch over to becoming an organic dairy as one of the best decisions in his life. Leaf-cutter Ants - Science Nation

02:29
Leaf cutter ants could be called the overachievers of the insect world. They are farmers, medicine makers, and green energy producers. With support from the National Science Foundation, bacteriologist Cameron Currie studies the complex evolutionary relationships between the ants, the fungi they cultivate and eat, and the bacteria that influence this symbiosis. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Currie works with the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center on campus to explore how the ants manage to degrade cellulose. Her goal is to discover new ways humans might break down biomass into biofuels. The bacteria component of the ant colony could also help scientists develop more effective antibiotics for human health and agriculture. Milking Dairy Cows - Free-Stall Barn Video

01:15
http://www.virtualfarmtours.ca A Canadian dairy farmer explains how he milks his cows in a Free-Stall Barn. Transcript: Wilfrid- We spend many hours every day with our cows. Milking, feeding, and monitoring their health and wellness. We know them as individuals, milking twice a day provides me with an opportunity to give each cow individual attention and close observation to help prevent and detect illness. If one of my cows is sick and has to be treated with antibiotics, I mark her using a leg band and I discard her milk. Cows are creatures of habit. That's why it's important to maintain a consistent, orderly and calm environment in the housing and milking areas. When a cow walks into the parlor I first ensure her udder is cleaned of visible dirt and bacteria. When I milk a cow, I pre dip and wipe off the udder before attaching the milking unit. The milking unit uses soft and gentle vacuum like pressure alternating on and off to milk the cow. When the milking is over she walks out the other side. The milk goes directly from the milking unit through a pipeline to the refrigerated bulk tank in the milk house where it is cooled immediately to 4 degrees Celsius.
