Citizens band radio

44:03
Citizens band radio (also known as CB radio) is, in many countries, a system of short-distance radio communications between individuals on a selection of 40 channels within the 27-MHz (11 m) band. Citizens band is distinct from the FRS, GMRS, MURS, Amateur Radio Service (ham radio). In many countries, CB operation does not require a license, and (unlike Amateur Radio) it may be used for business or personal communications. Like many other two-way radio services, Citizens band channels are shared by many users. Only one station may transmit at a time; other stations must listen and wait for the shared channel to be available. A number of countries have created similar radio services, with varying technical standards and requirements for licensing. While they may be known by other names, such as the General Radio Service in Canada, they often use similar frequencies (26 to 28 MHz), have similar uses, and similar technical standards. Although licenses may be required, eligibility is generally simple. Some countries also have personal radio services in the UHF band, such as the European PMR446 and the Australian UHF CB. This video is targeted to blind users. Attribution: Article text available under CC-BY-SA Creative Commons image source in video

Easter Sunday 2016 27MHz 11m Freeband Band Scan 27.415-27.855 MHz

11:59
27415-27855 "high band" up one band from the legal CB band or the "mid band", 40 channels + 5 "A" channels at 10 kHz channel spacing. Mostly SSB with some AM here and there. 5 kHz steps used for SSB, which, in theory, gives you nearly 100 "channels" to work with, starting at 27.410 MHz and going up to 27.860 MHz. Activity all over the 27.415 MHz - 27.855 MHz band, mostly Spanish language...strong propagation to Latin America and the Caribbean. Various stations heard, including operators who are members of the Sugar Delta DX Group (as heard as part of their callsigns/handles on frequency 27.610 MHz USB). Stations from North America, Central America and South America as well as the Caribbean Sea. 3 division (Brazil) callsign heard. 27.555 MHz USB, the primary international 11m calling frequency is featured. Additional regional calling frequencies are also shown. For example, the Caribbean area has several calling/standby frequencies, including 27.510 MHz LSB, 27.515 MHz LSB, and 27.455 MHz USB. 27.455 MHz USB is often more active than 27.555 MHz USB, especially when propagation to Latin America is enhanced. 27.455 USB is used as the Spanish language calling frequency, supplementary to 27.555 USB. 27.515 LSB is the primary frequency for The Knight Patrol (KP) DX Group based in Jamaica. However, this frequency often suffers interference from a taxi company dispatcher running AM on 27.515 MHz. When propagation conditions are good to both the Caribbean and Mexico...27.515 MHz can be a very busy frequency. Due to many the of KP stations' high power and directional antenna capability - they are often able to "punch through" the taxicab dispatch QRM. Supplementary SSB calling frequencies include 26.225 USB (and various frequencies clustered around it, such as 26.240 USB, 26.215 USB, etc), 26.285 USB (the "low band" version of 27.555 USB), 26.555 LSB and the many frequencies clustered around 26.555 LSB. 26.555 is often very busy and from time to time suffers from QRM from high powered AM stations on the same frequency. Operators will QSY to frequencies such as 26.540 LSB, 26.560 LSB, 26.570 LSB, etc, to escape the interference from AM stations. However, 26.585 MHz AM is an active Mexican truck driver/shootout channel, and the channels near that often have high power AM signals on them as well. 26-27 MHz 11 meter AM calling frequencies include the following: 26.375 MHz AM - Latin America - Spanish language AM calling/working frequency. Also a Polish SSB frequency. 26.395 MHz AM - Latin America - Spanish language AM calling 26.475 MHz AM - Latin America - Spanish language AM calling/working frequency 26.515 MHz AM - US Stations (Southern states mostly) 26.575 MHz AM - Latin America - Spanish language (Mexican trucker channel, supplementary to 26.585 MHz AM) 26.585 MHz AM - Mexican/Latin American AM calling/working frequency (heavy use by Spanish speaking truck drivers, etc) 26.595 MHz AM - Latin America (supplementary to 26.585 MHz AM) 26.605 MHz AM - Similar to 26.585 26.615 MHz AM - Similar to 26.585 (Channel 9 "down one band" CH9 27.065 MHz is heavily used by Latin American/Caribbean stations) 26.705 MHz AM - Puerto Rico/Caribbean/Latin American shootout freq - very powerful signals here (similar to 27.025 The Superbowl) 26.715 MHz AM - Supplementary to 26.705 MHz AM 26.725 MHz AM - Supplementary to 26.715/26.705, etc...see also 26.695 MHz AM and 26.735 MHz AM 26.735 MHz AM - US trucker frequency, also used by Spanish-speaking stations QSYed from 26.715, 26.725, etc 26.775 MHz AM - US Stations (Southern states mostly) also trucking companies 26.805 MHz AM - US Stations, trucking companies, mostly English heard on this frequency 26.815 MHz AM - American AM "low channel 26" calling (supplementary to 26.915 MHz AM) 26.835 MHz AM - American AM "low channel 28" calling (supplementary to 26.915 MHz AM) 26.905 MHz AM - Spanish taxicabs heard here, also English language two-way trucker comms 26.915 MHz AM - Primary "low band" or "low channel" AM frequency for USA, often called "915" or "36 low". Channel 36 down one band. 26.955 MHz AM - American stations, usually Southern USA 27.025 MHz AM - CB Channel 6 - THE SUPERBOWL 27.065 MHz AM - CB Channel 9 - Latin American/Spanish speaking AM calling channel 27.085 MHz AM - CB Channel 11 - The original calling channel (from back when CB was 23 channels) 27.185 MHz AM - CB Channel 19.... 27.265 MHz AM - CB Channel 26 - AM Calling and DX frequency (USA) 27.285 MHz AM - CB Channel 28 - AM Calling and DX frequency (USA)

Attempting Contact on a 2m Amateur Radio Repeater + Testing New Mic

00:28
I tried to contact a fellow ham radio buddy of mine while I was traveling south along I-5 in Everett, but I guess he was off radio at the time. I also picked up a new speaker mic and my scanner recording picked up my transmission on the repeater. From my honest point of view, the microphone quality of the mic sounds pretty good and the receiving audio from my speaker mic is also very good. This audio is unedited and has not been altered. Tech specs: TAPaulk Communications JH-SM108 Speaker Mic (K - Kenwood 2-pin connector) Wouxun Dual-band 2m/70cm Handheld KG-UV3D Browning BR-180 2m/70cm Dual-Band Antenna Tram 1246B Trunk Lip Mount - uploaded via http://www.mp32u.net/

Railfanning May 11 2012

28:08
After heading down to Findlay Market to purchase some tea, one of our group had the brilliant idea to bring his ham radio along. The rail traffic in the area coming into and out of the yard, as well as all inter-yard traffic can be heard on a ham radio set that can scan around the 2 meter band. So, after finding this out, we have mounted a 2 meter / 70 centimeter ham radio in my car in order to listen to rail traffic. This gives great warning as to when trains are expected. Next railfan video I will give a tour of my setup as well as place our external speaker so that you can hear some of the things going on. As a note, remember that in order to use a ham (amateur) radio you will need to take a test and become licensed, as well as follow all rules for amateur radio operators (like not broadcasting out of the allowable frequencies). You likely can find a scanner that can listen to things like this, but you will not be able, or allowed to talk on ham bands. While the railroad uses a radio that is in the 2 meter wavelength and many 2 meter ham radios can listen to this, they cannot broadcast on these frequencies. Modifying hardware to do this would be illegal. And in case anyone asks, CB radios are not ham radios. They work on the 11 meter band (27 MHz). Common ham bands for new users are 70 cm (440 MHz), 2 M (144 MHz), 6 M (50 MHz). Higher license classes allow the use of bands from 10 M (28 MHz) to 160 M (1.8 MHz). If you are interested in ham radio, check out wiki for some basic info. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amateur_radio

10:01
KA4UDX working stations in Connecticut and New York areas on 10 Meters FM. 10 Meters in case you don't know it is an HF band above CB Radio (11 Meters) in 28 and 29 Mhz (CB is in 26 and 27 Mhz) so it is subject to DX or "Skip" propogation like other High Frequency bands. The interesting thing on these is that these are FM, not AM or SSB, stations. They are repeaters similar to VHF (2 meters) and UHF (70 centimeters) Amateur Radio Repeaters. In fact these systems are link to VHF 2 meter and/or UHF 70 centimeter repeater systems locally. So we get to talk to the locals in these areas from Florida. Notice on this video that the gentleman Adam N2ACF was nice enough to turn off his 10 meter transmitter to allow me to talk to the guys on the KJ1Q/KB1CDI system in Connecticut.

KM4IPF and KM4TXT talk about their Kyocera 140 watt solar panel and how it got smashed while coming home from doing a ham radio demonstration at the Stone Mountain, GA Hamfest. The panel was used to help power the N4A Get on the Air station. Several new hams and prospective hams were able to make their first HF contacts with the station, which was provided by Icom, RadioWavz, and MFJ. The panel still works and they plan to make a video about how well it works while smashed, in the next week. Now, Daddy needs to get them another panel! WO4DX North Georgia 2-meter Tropo Contact from N4QV in South Florida

03:43
This is my 1st posting of 2-meter tropo contacts that I recorded over 3 years, while I was active, from South Florida. Tropospheric Propagation doesn't happen that often, but when it does, it is really fun. This contact is to Gary, WO4DX in Dawsonville, Georgia, about 630 miles! This contact was made during at good fall opening that I had from South Florida, on November 15, 2009 I only had the audio, so I had to create a video with some still photos, as a slide show. Enjoy! 73 and see you on 2-meters! Randy Shirley N4QV

2m interference

01:03
Constant interference in the lower part of the 2m band. This is recorded through a Diamond X300 vertical antenna. The interference is less visible on horizontal polarization (on a pair of stacked PAR loop antennas). The interference is about 1.5 MHz wide. In the video I'm moving a bit up and down in frequency to show there's nothing bellow or above this carrier. I've flipped my mains breakers so it's coming from outside my house. I can hardly detect it on a small whip antenna, but it gives S4 to S7 on the meter on the large vertical antenna. Any ideas what this can be?

Shared Horizons 12

02:02
As Shared Horizons 12 comes to a close, Command Sgt. Maj. Lance Rygmyr explains the significance of the state partnership program between the Georgia National Guard and the country of Georgia. TBILISI, Georgia, June 26, 2012 -- More than 100 U.S. military and civilians kicked off a bi-lateral humanitarian assistance and emergency response exercise yesterday with classes on the skills and theories necessary for successful disaster response. Public affairs officers from the Georgia Army National Guard and U.S. Army in Europe (USAREUR) were among the participants who provided a crisis communications class meant to help shape the country's public affairs efforts. "In an emergency, we have a responsibility to keep the public informed of the government's response to a disaster," said Maj. John H. Alderman IV, public affairs officer for the (state of) Georgia Department of Defense. "We have to plan for crisis communications in an emergency, just like we plan for transportation and resupply." The class included senior leaders of the Country of Georgia ministries of defense and internal affairs, and other Georgian officials. The instruction generated tough questions about how and when to communicate sensitive information. In a spirited discussion with the Georgians, Alderman counseled the military public affairs practice of "maximum allowable disclosure with minimal delay." "My training and experience tell me to maximize what we tell people, even on sensitive subjects," said Alderman. "But clearly there could be security concerns that could affect what you can say. "That's why it is vital to have the discussion and make a decision at high leadership levels," he added. "We also have to test those decisions and lines of communication during exercises such as this so we can get honest answers without real lives on the line." Shared Horizons 2012 is a U.S. European Command-directed exercise conducted by USAREUR and supported by the State Partnership Program. It is designed to help the country of Georgia government provide civil response in the event of a natural or manmade disaster. About 12 Georgia Army Guardsmen and 25 USAREUR personnel are working alongside 100 Georgian government officials here at the Georgian National Guard Training Center. The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs and Ministry of Defense are leading the exercise. About half of the Georgia Guardsmen here assisting in the exercise are doing so under the Guard's State Partnership Program (SPP) with the Country of Georgia. According to Georgia Air Guard Lt. Col. David Johnson, the SPP director, the bilateral program between the two Georgias has existed since 1995. "The program is built around traveling contact teams that work with our Georgian counterparts on a variety of matters throughout the year," Johnson explained. We [the state of Georgia] also conduct continual familiarization visits that focus on implementing 'Combatant Commander strategy' and U.S. foreign policy with which to build partner capacity." "This, in turn," he added, "acts as a building block for the long-term civil-military relationship the state of Georgia and the Country of Georgia." The training, conducted "in the spirit of partnership for peace," assesses the preparedness of responsible ministries under the Country of Georgia National Response Plan. During the exercise, participants identify and address deficiencies that occur throughout the training. Shared Horizons also provides U.S. participants insight into the Georgian government processes, and identifies procedures to integrate relief if requested by the Georgian officials. Overall, Shared Horizons promotes regional stability by enhancing the Georgians interagency capabilities during natural or manmade disasters. "What's learned during these four days will help them better mitigate public suffering in the event the real thing ever happens," said Georgia Army Guard Col. Anthony Abbott, Shared Horizons 2012 exercise director. "In addition, the Georgians will be equipped and trained to respond better to the questions civilian media will ask." http://www.gadod.net/index.php/news/ga-dod/current-stories/609-nnjoint-us-georgian-disaster-exercise-begins

1921 Spark Gap Transmitter / Ham Radio

This is an operating reproduction exhibit I built of a 1921 spark gap transmitter used by Amateur Radio operator John Westcott, W8AGA. It was built for a house museum where John once lived and operated his transmitter, but the museum reneged on its agreement with the radio club and the exhibit was never installed.
