Tom B. - AA Speaker - "Emotional Sobriety" and 12-Step Alcoholism Recovery

01:14:24
Awesome share by one of the best AA speakers, Tom B. This is perhaps the BEST talk on the topic of "emotional sobriety" I have ever heard! MUST LISTEN! :) From the book Alcoholics Anonymous: "In spite of the great increase in the size and span of this Fellowship, at its core it remains simple and personal. Each day, somewhere in the world, recovery begins when one alcoholic talks with another alcoholic, sharing experience, strength, and hope." Addiction treatment WORKS! The Twelve Step Model has been utilized as a treatment for alcohol abuse and alcoholism since 1935. It is extremely important to know that help IS out there and addiction recovery is possible. If you are battling alcoholism, drug addiction, addiction or any other form of addictive behavior, there are people who know EXACTLY what it is like! You can find out more at: http://www.aa.org - Alcoholics Anonymous Official Site - As should be blatantly obvious, we are in no way affiliated with them or any other Twelve Step Program. We are just looking to provide hope to those suffering from alcoholism or addiction. It is important to note there are several ways for one to address his or her alcohol abuse treatment. Substance abuse is a very serious condition and has become an epidemic in today's world. Many people suffering with substance abuse need treatment, such as inpatient stays, rehab, or counseling. The importance and purpose of this video, and all our other videos, is to show that recovery IS possible and to give hope to those who are struggling with alcohol and drug addiction issues. Help IS out there! Every tape is carefully selected to ensure its quality and that it is entertaining to listen to. How Anne Lamott Got Sober

05:00
A story of meditation, black coffee, and Safeway cakes. Check out the rest of Anne Lamott's interview at http://bigthink.com/annelamott Question: How did you get sober? Anne Lamott: How did I get sober?  Well, I had—when my dad died when I was 25, my younger brother had been 20, my brother Steve, and he worked in landscape architect, he was a laborer, and one of his best friends had a father who was sober, named Jack.  When our dad died, Steven moved in with this guy Jack and there were all these sober people around his house all the time talking about how much they loved being sober and prayer and meditation and helping others, and they always had these horrible cakes from Safeway that I happen to really prefer to good bakery, because I mostly just like the icing, and they always had this swill, this terrible coffee.  And I was always drinking too much of this swill late at night, whereas if I drink coffee at night, I would sleep again several days later.  But, I got to be friends with this character named Jack and he'd been a total lush like I am, and he said, you know, "We're not drinking, one day at a time, and everything that we'd ever dreamt has happened for us."  And I said, "Well, I'm very religious, very spiritual without your little Safeway cakes and swill." But like most drunks that had gotten sober, I got to the point where I was deteriorating faster than I could lower my standards.  You know?  So, I was getting to a point where I was living in a way that involved waking up sick and with a lot of shame and just kind of animal confusion.  And one day I called Jack and said, "What do I do?"  And he said, "Why don't I come over and we'll talk."  So, that's how I got sober and that's how I stayed sober as people said, "Why don't I come over and we'll talk, and drink our bad coffee like communion together."  Our bad coffee and our Safeway cakes. Question: What is the spiritual path you've taken since sobering up? Anne Lamott: Well, I became a Christian before I got sober. So I was a drunk, bulimic Christian. I wondered into the biracial church across the highway from where I lived when I was still drinking very heavily and using.  And the only reason I went in to this church, which happened to be Presbyterian, was because it was across the street from a flea market and I was there a lot of Sunday mornings when I was so hung over.  And when I'm hung over, I'm drawn to greasy food and lots of it.  And then I would hear this gospel singing or the songs of the Civil Rights Movement.  When I grew up, my parents were old lefties, I grew up on the Weavers and Pete Seeger and Joan Baez, and they would be singing a lot of the Civil Rights anthems, and so I'd wander in because I'd run out of good ideas, and no one at my church hassled me.  There were about 40 people and still are only about 40 people.  But they didn't try to get me to sign on the dotted line, or tell them who shot the Holy Ghost, they just let me sit there and—they just let me sit there.  And the air was nutritious.  Because there were people who had put their money where their mouths were and they'd done the work of social justice and they were true believers. And I lived in the Bay Area, and still do, in the years of Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso and Gary Snyder, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti at this founding City Lights.  My father loved the Beats and worked on a magazine that was very avant-garde in the Bay Area with Evan Connell and a couple of people that were just literary giants.  It was called Contact magazine, so I'd always—and Allen Watts was around on his progressive Bay Area radio stations like KPFA. And so I grew up with the consciousness that Christianity was for people who were really stupid, but that there was something magical in the religions of the East and that Buddhism was okay, and Hindu was okay because—Hinduism was okay because Ginsberg was so wildly passionately, sensuously East in his understanding of things, and so joyously so.  And so I've always understood that meditation had to be part of—or was part of the natural path and so I've always sort of dabbled in it.  And the main expression of my spirituality has been this little church that I go to, and my sobriety.  The path of recovery and—I'm a terrible Christian and meditating is very hard for me, and I do it.  I do it badly, like I do a lot of things.  I believe in doing things badly.  I believe in listening to the—what calls you from your heart and your spirit and if you do it badly, like learning to dance, you do it badly or you're going to kick yourself when you grow old and you meant to do it.Recorded April 6, 2010 Interviewed by Austin Allen

Chris S. "The Frontier of Emotional Sobriety" - AA Speaker - 12-Step Recovery

55:13
I absolutely love this tape! Chris S. (one of the best AA speakers in my opinion), shares about the all-important topic of emotional sobriety. In his crystal-clear style, he beautifully articulates the sometimes confusing topic of emotional sobriety and the importance of continued growth in recovery. I HIGHLY recommend this talk! :) From the book Alcoholics Anonymous: "In spite of the great increase in the size and span of this Fellowship, at its core it remains simple and personal. Each day, somewhere in the world, recovery begins when one alcoholic talks with another alcoholic, sharing experience, strength, and hope." What is the Twelve Step Model? How is it a "treatment for alcoholism" or "alcohol abuse?" From Wikipedia: "A twelve-step program is a set of guiding principles (accepted by members as 'spiritual principles,' based on the approved literature) outlining a course of action for recovery from addiction, compulsion, or other behavioral problems. Originally proposed by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) as a method of recovery from alcoholism, the Twelve Steps were first published in the book Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered from Alcoholism in 1939. The method was then adapted and became the foundation of other twelve-step programs. Twelve-step methods have been adopted to address a wide range of substance-abuse and dependency problems." You can find out more at: http://www.aa.org - Alcoholics Anonymous Official Site (And as should be blatantly obvious, we are in no way affiliated with them or any other 12 step program. We are just looking to provide hope to those suffering from alcoholism or addiction.) "Addiction treatment" WORKS! There is addiction help out there and "addiction recovery" is possible. If you are battling "alcohol addiction" there are people who know EXACTLY what it is like! It is important to note there are several ways for one to address his or her "alcohol abuse treatment." "Substance abuse" is a very serious condition. Many need inpatient stays or counseling. The importance and purpose of this video, and all our other videos, is to show that recovery IS possible and to give hope to those who are struggling with substance abuse issues. Help IS out there! :) From the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous: "Abandon yourself to God as you understand God. Admit your faults to Him and to your fellows. Clear away the wreckage of your past. Give freely of what you find and join us. We shall be with you in the Fellowship of the Spirit, and you will surely meet some of us as you trudge the Road of Happy Destiny." Do You HATE Sitting Still? | EXERCISE ADDICTION

09:06
"30 Days to Loving Yourself" link: https://sellfy.com/p/UFbk/ "30 Days To Loving Yourself: Daily Tasks For Overcoming Self-Hate, Anxiety, & Stress" is a 30 day plan, filled with daily tasks designed to completely change your life, one step at a time, one day at a time. Just like you, I know what it’s like to look in the mirror every day and not particularly like what I see. Not just on a physical level, but also on a mental and emotional level. At some point in your life, or maybe it was ever so slowly, you started to change. Things got different. Over time, you slowly started to lose your excitement for your life and for who you are as an individual. Years ago, the same thing happened to me. I went through a very difficult time and I no longer had the vigor for life that I used to. Things just felt “off.” Every day would just drag along, I was always waiting for the next best thing to happen in my life, living for the weekends (only to do nothing on the weekends), feeling self-pity and dreaming of a better, more happy, fun life, the life like I “used to” have or I “could have” or like someone else had if things could only change. I dealt with low self-esteem, low self-confidence, self-hate, anxiety, worrying, always wanting this or that, never being content, living in the past and day-dreaming of the future when things would change and I would finally be happy. I kept thinking if things were different, or like they used to be, then all my problems would go away. I believed that if I could only have this or if that certain thing could change in my life then my life would finally be different. But that wasn't the case, and along the way I figured out the secret. There was one key that unlocked the door to me loving my life, loving myself, and beating the anxiety and stress once and for all. There was one thing I had to do to see results. And that's what this book is all about - it's a guide to help you get to that point. It's 30 days of tasks that I have implemented in my own life to make me successful in finally, genuinely, loving myself and my life. Finally waking up every single day with joy and happiness, stress-free and excited for the day. Finally accepting my body, accepting where I am in life, loving my job, the place I lived, the things I did every day, and my relationships. Finally loving my life. The point of this book is for you to learn to truly loving yourself, your life, your body, your job, your relationships, the things that happen with you day-to-day, not someone else's. It's about you learning to cope with certain situations, accepting certain things, and creating the right habits that will change your life. And I can promise you, if you commit to the 30 days, you will undoubtedly see a change. And not just any change, but a drastic change. "Get Your Period Handbook" link: https://sellfy.com/p/38ei/ The "Get Your Period Handbook" has over 250 pages, answers over 100 FAQ's (about life, hormones, stress, diets, exercise, health, etc.) shares my own personal experience with regaining not only my period (twice!), but also both my mental and physical health when it comes to food and exercise; references numerous studies and research, has tons of real-life testimonials from girls I've worked with, 25 easy-to-make recipes, and lays out how to literally heal your body, fix your mind, and change your life for good. Though this book focuses on getting your period, it would also be beneficial for anyone and everyone (even guys!) struggling with food and exercise issues. Chapters include: - The Birth Control Pill - Why Am I So Bloated? + How to Fix It - Are you Addicted to Exercise? + Quiz - I LOVE to Exercise! - What Can We Learn from the Minnesota Starvation Experiment? + Disordered Eating During Puberty - Do You Have Orthorexia? + Quiz - Why Diets and Workouts Haven't Worked for You - Signs That Your Period is Right Around the Corner - Tips for Dealing with PMS - Best Foods to Get Your Period Back - Guard Your Mind! - The Power of Positive Thinking - Asking for Help - FAQ (hair loss, PCOS, binge eating, weight gain, depression, counting calories, etc.) - My Letter to You - Grocery "Must-Haves” - Recipes

Relapse Prevention: Overcoming the BUD Part 4 for Substance Abuse Recovery - Reach Recovery

05:41
This is the final video in the Relapse Prevention series on Substance Abuse. Today we are talking about Overcoming the BUD, presented by http://reachrecovery.org,a Substance Abuse Recovery Program located in Greenville, NC. If you missed the previous videos, be sure to go to our relapse prevention playlist and start with Part 1. How does one overcome a BUD and prevent relapse? Previously we mentioned the two directions that a BUD can lead someone. The BUD UP or the BUD Down. In between these two directions there is a path know as The Reality Zone. This Zone has four specific ways listed to keep us safe in the Reality and provides a wall of protection from the fantasy world and the underworld. One safeguard is Self-Examination By regular self-examination, we can recognize the beginning of a build-up of attitudes that develop into a BUD. If we do this daily, to the point that it becomes second nature throughout the day, we will be able to surrender each negative attitude to God as quickly as it appears. It is the nature of our flesh to deny our problems and to project the blame onto others. This habit pattern becomes especially strong in the midst of addiction. Because of our strong tendency to deny and project, we must pay close attention to these attitudes. Self-righteousness and its opposite, self-condemnation, are the next highest tendencies that will lead us into a BUD. These attitudes are cover-ups for our problem of low self-value. They are closely linked to our deep-rooted fear of rejection, fear of failure, pride and bitter-root judgment. All these problems lie deep within our subconscious minds. They need to let God deal with us as He renews our minds. What is the second safeguard to overcoming the BUD? The second safeguard that protects us from relapse is prayer. Prayer is communication with God. Communication can take many forms. Unfortunately, the last thing we want to do when on a BUD is to pray. But we can't expect to have our negative attitudes and our deep-rooted negative beliefs renewed without the help of our Creator and Lord. If we allow Him, He will do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. Prayer is the process of allowing God to renew our minds. Instead of simply going through the outward motions of religious performance because everyone expects that of us, we can utilize prayer to keep us in a continual personal relationship with God. John 15:5 in the Bible says, “"I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing." Apart from Jesus, we can do nothing. When we neglect prayer, we set ourselves up to stumble. Unless we abide in Him, we cannot have inner righteousness, peace and joy. When we maintain our inner relationship with God through prayer, we can overcome any BUD that may come our way. The fourth way to safeguard against relapse is through the Holy Spirit God has given each Christian His Holy Spirit to live inside of them. Ephesians 2:10 says, “The Holy Spirit is always at work in us to perfect us for the task God planned for us since the foundation of the world.” Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can overcome a BUD. The Holy Spirit 1- leads us into accountability, provided by relationships in the body of Christ. 2 - leads us to communicate and cooperate with the Lord in prayer, 3- and leads us to examine ourselves in relation to the word of God. Sexaholics Anonymous "Sober Dating"

01:03:27
From Wikipedia: Sexaholics Anonymous (SA) is one of several twelve-step programs for compulsive sexual acting-out based on the original Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. SA takes its place among various 12-step groups that seek recovery from sexual addiction: Sex Addicts Anonymous, Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous, Sexual Compulsives Anonymous and Sexual Recovery Anonymous. Collectively these groups are referred to as "S" groups since all their acronyms begin with that letter: SA, SAA, SLAA, SCA, SRA. SA helps recovering "sexaholics." According to the group, a sexaholic is someone for whom "lust has become an addiction." Thus SA distinguishes itself from other S groups by defining sexual sobriety as no sex with self or with partners other than with one's spouse and a progressive victory over lust. "In defining sobriety, we do not speak for those outside Sexaholics Anonymous. We can only speak for ourselves. Thus, for the married sexaholic, sexual sobriety means having no form of sex with self or with persons other than the spouse. For the unmarried sexaholic, sexual sobriety means freedom from sex of any kind. And for all of us, single and married alike, sexual sobriety also includes progressive victory over lust". The group uses the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous and the book "Sexaholics Anonymous" (often referred to as "The White Book") as a guide. The White Book explains that "the sexaholic has taken himself or herself out of the whole context of what is right or wrong. He or she has lost control, no longer has the power of choice, and is not free to stop." www.sa.org

BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER! What no one else will tell you

35:21
This is everything I have learnt in my journey so far about Borderline Personality Disorder. It is everything I couldnt find online or get a straight answer out of any therapist or psychiatrist. This is the truth behind my actions and what thoughts and feelings really mean. I am sick of being told to say I have BPD and not I am Borderline because who gives a shit! Either way I acknoweldge it is something I need to work and I am talking about it! Isnt that the most important thing? Anyone who is bordelrine knows it is a hige part of who you were as a person and how you developed. It is wrapped so tighlty around your sense of self it is incredibly hard to distinguish what is me and what is borderline when they so often seem one and the same! Documenting my experiences with Borderline Personality Disorder. Life on the Borderline can be tough! Heavily stigmatized and misunderstood having BPD can be a challenge to live with! Borderline is categorized by a split sense of self and suffers will often suddenly and drastically change how they feel about themselves. A symptom know as splitting. With a black and white style of thinking the line between a good and bad person is clear cut. Always one or the other. This conflicting moral dilemma they internally is often the filter in which they see the rest of the world and the people in it. Often positively evaluating love interests and deevaluating them when they feel hurt. Patients will often report feeling empty, crippled by low self-esteem and exhibit behaviors of emotional detachment and avoidant or anxious attachment styles. BPD is often most intense in interpersonal relationships. Having severe anxiety about relationships engage in drastic efforts to avoid being abandoned fueled by an intense fear of rejection. BPD is a form of compounding trauma from a lifetime of invalidation and psychological abuse. We are often told we are just over reacting or we need to learn how to control our emotions. Its important to remember people with BPD have extremely intense emotions that overwhelm them sometimes. Borderlines can often be accused of being impulsive, reckless, irritable, aggressive, moody, attention seeking or manipulative. But these sterotypes are are often misleading. Most borderlines are passive and direct their anger and frustration towards themselves. Often soothing themselves or punishing themselves with coping mechanisms such as self-harm, threatening or attempting suicide and drug or alcohol abuse. FACTS: 1-4% of the population are affected by BPD at some time in life. Late adolescence or early adulthood is when symptoms usually first appear.Women are more likely to be diagnosed. 1 in 10 people diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder will end up successfully taking their own life! There is help available! Such as medications and psychotherapy 10 years of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy I am told... A Psychologist or Psychiatrist can diagnose & test you for it. xoxo BIPOLAR BARBIE Mental Health Advocate - Author-Motivational Speaker-Blogger-Vlogger-Youtuber-Instagrammer-Fashion Designer- Model "Changing the face of mental health by giving others the words to express their own unique journeys and life stories. Absolutely, it even has to be. At least when the French alternative-pop-folk superstars Nili Hadida and Benjamin Cotto, alias Lilly Wood & The Prick, have their way. Their haunting melody "Prayer in C" was quickly snatched up by the DJ, producer and label owner Robin Schulz from Osnabruck, Germany, and sublimated into a shining dancefloor pearl! At the beginning of this year the head of Lausbuben Records ("Rascal" Records) and star DJ Robin Schulz already entered the Top 40 of the German iTunes charts with his single "Sunset". Last March he shoved none less than Pharrell Williams from the charts throne with his "Waves" remix for the Dutch rapper Mr. Probz and took a cosy position at Number One in the German singles, iTunes, airplay and dance hitparade charts. But this is not all because Robin Schulz is more than successful on an international level. The "Waves" remix stayed at #24 in the global iTunes Single Charts, at #21 in the global Spotify Charts and has held a Top 10 position in the Beatport Charts for more than three months. Following acclaimed live appearances in Germany, Holland, France and the UK, the Soundcloud-plays millionaire reached into his electronic bag of tricks and delivers a preview for the upcoming summer holidays with his deep house style remix of Lilly Wood & The Prick's "Prayer in C". It's a superstar collaboration: "Prayer in C" is the acoustic counterpart to an open air summer party night in the Provence: the scent of lavender in the air and an atmosphere somewhere between melancholy and euphoria. The track is driven by the absolutely captivating, goose-bump-inducing voice of Nili Hadidas, who with her sexy-smoky timbre, the haunting lyrics as well as Benjamin Cotto's wistful acoustic guitar melody create the organic vibe. The Robin Schulz remix underlays the track with a tight straight-on beat that transforms the original folk-pop track into an energic. melody-house club hymn. And Schulz must know how to do it: nearly 113,000 Soundcloud followers, who clicked his tracks several million times altogether, can't be wrong (for example, "Willst Du" has more than 1.2 million clicks or "Sunset" more than 820,000). And also his YouTube videos for his bootlegs with millions of clicks show that Robin Schulz knows how to seize the latest sound and serve it up to the masses in a sizzling new package. At the moment Robin Schulz is experiencing the hottest clubs in Europe on an extending tour. And the original creators of the track, the Paris duo Lilly Wood & The Prick don't have to play themselves down as far as fame is concerned. At home in France, the duo advanced to genuine superstars following their double-platinum debut abum. At the beginning of the year, one album track, "Into Trouble" was used in a TV spot for the noble jewelry brand Cartier. Together with Robin Schulz they deliver the next club diamond with "Prayer in C (Robin Schulz Remix)". "The Fall" Acoustic Version By: Mindy Davey- Recovery Is Possible

04:19
"The Fall" is a song off my upcoming Album "Humanity" all about my addiction and recovery. I'm a recovering addict. I've battled addiction for about 5 years until I had enough courage to check myself into rehab. A week into rehab I found out I was pregnant with my daughter Arianna. I am now 4 years 5 months sober. My mission is to not only raise awareness about this epidemic but to help as many as I can by telling my story thru music. We all fall at one point in this life but what matter is we rise as one and come together to make a change!! ❤️🙏🏻 This song as well as my Album drops June 23rd on iTunes, Spotify and Google Play!!!

Tlingit Music--Past, Present and Future: Ed Littlefield at TEDxSitka

18:15
Ed Littlefield is a Tlingit Native of Southeast Alaska currently working on composing and arranging Native music from the Tlingit tradition. He studied percussion at the University of Idaho and has played in the Idaho-Washington Symphony, The Orion Trombone Quartet, Dallas Brass, the Jazz Police and many other professional groups in the Northwest. Ed has recently completed an album combining traditional Alaskan Native music with jazz, called "Walking Between Worlds," featuring the Native Jazz Quartet: Ed Littlefield (drums); Jason Marsalis (vibes); Christian Fabian (bass); and Reuel Lubag (piano). His talk focuses on this fusion and the possibilities it offers. About TEDx, x = independently organized event. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Cold Spring leaders fight plan to put addiction recovery center next door

02:05
City leaders say they are opposed to a plan to put an addiction recovery center next door. And they're upset with county officials for not sharing information with them. The mayor and the city attorney are speaking out against a plan to convert the former Campbell County Boys Lodge, just across the city line on a bluff above the Ohio River.
Organising An 'Intervention' In Active Addiction Or Alcoholism

02:03
Trying to bring about change in the behaviour of an active addict or alcoholic is frustratingly difficult. In fact we have a complex word for that what generally turns out to be a failure; co-dependence. There are two main types of intervention that can have positive outcomes. But in both cases attempting to make the addict or alcoholic change should not be the primary focus. The aim of an intervention is to get across a message that change is possible if the addict/alcoholic wants it. It's also about setting clear boundaries around the using behaviour and signalling that it causes harm and is not acceptable. The two avenues for intervention are Peer to peer intervention Professionally led intervention In peer to peer intervention a recovering addict/alcoholic will reach out to someone who is still using to share their story with them and how they became clean and sober. It's very much up to the individual concerned how and when they do it and can't be organised by other people in advance. In these interventions it is not advisable that this is done with someone to whom the recovering person has overly strong emotional ties. As their own recovery may be compromised if things go wrong. Also if they are in anonymous fellowships this anonymity can be compromised, which in some circumstances can be harmful. Anyone thinking of doing this would be wise to seek advice from a trusted person first ( a sponsor, coach, therapist etc). Professionally led interventions involve asking a counsellor or psychotherapist to work with a family or group of friends to organise an 'intervention' for them. Here are some tips to think about when deciding to do this Meet with the therapist to discus the issues and problems, without the patient. Decide with them if an intervention is warranted, what the treatment options are. Choose the rehab and contact them prior to the intervention. Ensure they are ready for admission on the day of the intervention if that course of action is agreed Arrange to meet with the therapist prior to the intervention with everyone who will be present. Excepting the patient. Rehearse what each person will say, discuss fears, plan strategies for admission to rehab or how to end the intervention of the patient refuses treatment Meet with the patient, therapist and chosen family or friends at the time and place agreed for the intervention. ensure there are no distractions from phones etc Stick to the script! Don't get angry, stick to 'I' statements, focus on positive and loving language and messages. Do not collude with any denial, have each person ready to share their experiences of the damage caused by the using if the patient minimises or avoids the issues Offer treatment. If this is agreed, arrange admission immediately If treatment is refused don't blame as you will have set a very clear boundary and this may well be the seed planted in the patient for them to come out of their denial and eventually seek help Bring the focus back to yourself and seek support from other's who are in recovery from loving an addict/alcoholic For today say I am not another person's addiction or alcoholism. I didn't cause it, I can't control it, I can't cure it
