Why do women put on weight after 40? Women's' bodies slow down at menopause, the same way men start gaining weight as they lose testosterone. Guys don't necessarily gain weight as they age. They start losing muscle mass. If they don't cut back on calories or work out more, they start gaining weight. Or just a beer belly. Women tend to see a sudden drop off of estrogen around 40 with menopause, so the weight gain seems more sudden. Guys see a slow decline after 30. Is menopause a death sentence, or a diet sentence? Where you have to diet the rest of your life? The natural weight gain can be avoided by walking at least an hour a day. In short, working out more than you did before menopause but when you have less energy. That's why older people tend to gain a pound every few years, regardless of gender. I've heard of women taking medications and prescriptions to avoid the weight gain. Taking estrogen will offset the likely weight gain, as well as reduce the risk of heart attacks that the shut down of the ovaries cause. And it slows osteoporosis. Then why do so many women take herbal supplements instead of taking estrogen? Because taking estrogen increases the risk of breast cancer, uterine cancer and other types of reproductive cancer. And stroke, dementia, gall stones and blood clots. Gain weight and lose bone mass or face those risks. No wonder it's a difficult decision. At least estrogen also reduces the risk of broken hips, heart attacks and such. It's better than a lot of the stupider things women try to lose weight like cabbage soup diets and cookie diets. I'd try a cookie diet. I'll say now, it only works if you don't eat anything BUT the few nutrient packed cookies. And it isn't a general pass to pig out on chocolate chip cookies.

Why do women take testosterone? Testosterone increases sex drive in women as well as men. That explains just about everything then. You can have too much of a good thing. Too much testosterone causes development of male characteristics, so women shouldn't take male testosterone products hoping to improve their love life. Yeah, it doesn't help if the drugs rev up your sex drive but the beard drives them away. Is testosterone the best solution for low sex drive in women? Normal women of childbearing age will get other treatments for low sex drive. Women are more likely to get testosterone if they are post-menopausal. It sounds like it should be a solution for middle aged women. You don't have to be over 50. Any woman who has had her ovaries out finds her hormone levels plummeting. Why isn't it given more often? The FDA doesn't recommend testosterone for women, only men. And women can suffer sexual dysfunction from lack of the female hormone, estrogen. Can you take both testosterone and estrogen? For a woman in menopause, testosterone is partially broken down into estrogen. In fact, men get some estrogen naturally because their bodies also break some of it down to estrogen. Yet we never see me with breasts in the freak show. It's relative to the other hormones in the body. A woman with high estrogen even if from hormone therapy can take testosterone without turning into a guy. Why doesn't it happen more often? You shouldn't take testosterone if you have a history of heart disease, breast cancer or other medical conditions worsened by male hormones. And the risk of dementia and cardiovascular disease goes up if you take it. Yet I see it promoted more and more. Some women try testosterone to build up their muscles. Not just body building but to combat muscle loss and fat buildup after menopause. That's gender equality. Everyone take testosterone to regain sex drive and your trim, youthful figure. Though, hopefully, not turning into a guy for the privilege.

I am so confused about what to do and am finding that rather than being proactive, I am actually doing nothing. Can you help me understand why this is happening in my body? With love, Monique Based on what you are experiencing -- cramps, heavy bleeding and fibroids, the conclusion is that you have excess estrogen. This is a common issue for women as the body cannot get rid of estrogen optimally or there is too much estrogen coming in. Two tips: With excess estrogen, you want to focus on your liver.
