Parable of the Hummingbird: Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas
http://www.heartspeakproductions.ca Featured Presentation at the 2nd International Conference on Restorative Practices: Widening Our Lens, Connecting Our Practice, May 31st - June 5th, 2009, Vancouver, BC. Restorative Practices International in partnership with the Centre for Restorative Justice, SFU Flight of the Hummingbird; A Parable for the Environment - This little book features artwork by internationally renowned artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas. His distinct and lively Haida Manga style engages perfectly with this inspirational story that encourages every individual to act on behalf of the worlds limited and precious resources. http://mny.ca/ Athlii Gwaii: The Line at Lyell (46:30 min.) 2003 Part of the Ravens and Eagles: Haida Art series Jeff Bear/Marianne Jones, Ravens and Eagles Productions In the fall of 1985, a small but resolute troupe of Haida elders journeyed by helicopter to Athlii Gwaii (Lyell Island) to join their young counterparts in a stand against clearcutting. Industrial invasion in the remote archipelago had gone too far. Ancient cedar giants and rare spruce trees—lifeblood of Haida art and culture—had been leveled indiscriminately for too long. Buoyed by their courageous Haida elders, protesters united in peaceful resistance. A total of 72 people were arrested, but their tactics garnered global attention and won change: in 1987, the government established the Gwaii Haanas Park Reserve/Haida Heritage Site. http://www.movingimages.ca/catalogue/Art/re_athliigwaii.html

Brain Tumor Surgery
This University of Washington program profiles an innovative surgical technique for maintaining the speech and language skills of a brain tumor patient. The program introduces viewers to Deborah Kelley, a remarkable patient who bravely allows a camera to follow her for several weeks, from her initial consultation at the UW Medical Center's Neurosurgery clinic and then into surgery. Deborah undergoes an awake surgery, which allows the neurosurgeon to pinpoint the exact location of her brain tumor, a technique called functional brain mapping. Kelley's case received an in-depth review by the University of Washington Medical Center's Neuro-Oncology Tumor Board, a multi-disciplinary group of neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, neuropathologists, brain tumor researchers and social workers. The Neuro-Oncology Tumor Board has created a passionate and comprehensive approach to patient care centering on the role of the medical team, who guide the patient, and their family, from pre-operative tests to post operative diagnosis and treatment. 18. Sites of Memory, Sites of Mourning (Guest Lecture by Jay Winters)
European Civilization, 1648-1945 (HIST 202) As a result of World War I, Europe had a different understanding of war in the twentieth century than the United States. One of the most important ways in which the First World War was experienced on the continent and in Britain was through commemoration. By means of both mass-media technologies and older memorial forms, sites of memory offered opportunities for personal as well as political reconciliation with the unprecedented consequences of the war. The influence of these sites is still felt today, in a united Europe, as the importance of armies has diminished in favor of social welfare programs. 00:00 - Chapter 1. The Lincoln Lectures — The Lincoln Assassination Conspirators: Their Confinement and Execution ...
On May 1, 1865, two weeks after Abraham Lincolns assassination, President Andrew Johnson appointed John Frederick Hartranft to command the Washington Arsenal military prison, which housed the eight civilians accused of complicity in the shooting. Sustaining Successful Civic Engagement - Campus and Community Initiatives
Presenters: Devorah Lieberman, Cass Freedland, & Pat Tooker of Wagner College. Institutions of Higher Education often focus on service learning and civic engagement initiatives that send students into the community in ways that are robust for a semester (or a quarter) but may not continue after the semester. These may be successful for the moment, often episodic, depending on a faculty member's commitment to the community, the community organization's commitment to the institution, or student desire to continue with the agency after the grading period ended. Wagner College, through a grant supported by Learn and Serve of the Corporation for National and Community Service, created Civic Innovations: a model that fosters sustainable and successful community-university service learning collaborations.
