For months, Browning had been working on this secret project. Now the moment of truth had arrived. In the modest surroundings of the UK countryside, "UK's Iron Man" took to the sky. Sort of. Copenhagen Suborbitals: The Incredible DIY Rocket Scientists on a Mission to Send a Human to Space

11:33
On July 28, a group of amateur space engineers plan to launch a rocket 12 kilometres into the sky, from a boat off the coast of Denmark. Copenhagen Suborbitals is a group of volunteers with a shared mission: to send a human being into space. Their latest rocket, the Nexo II, will act as a technology testbed, testing their engines and pressure systems before they proceed with their plans for a manned flight. The Nexo II is the most advanced rocket that Copenhagen Suborbitals has built. Funded entirely by donations and sponsors, it is 6.7 metres long and is powered by an engine running on ethanol and liquid oxygen. If all goes well with this launch, the group will be a step closer to their ultimate goal: building the 13-metre Spica rocket, capable of launching a person 105 km above the Earth, into suborbital flight, before landing back in the Baltic Sea. In this video, Wired travels to Denmark to meet the Copenhagen Suborbitals team in their workshop and hear about their ambitious mission as they prepare for their biggest ever launch. Imogen Heap Performance with Musical Gloves Demo | WIRED 2012 | WIRED

It's never done that before!" Imogen Heap breaks out of a captivating performance of a song written just three weeks ago for a piece of tech she's had to wait two-and-a-half years to get her hands on. Covering Heap's hands, arms and back are a series of wires. Two LEDs blink on the back of her hands. She adjusts a setting on her computer and composes herself in the centre of the stage, eager to continue the performance. Despite the minor hitch, the Wired 2012 audience are still captivated by the award-winning musician -- if anything, the error only makes her passion for the new technology all the more obvious. Heap told Wired 2012 that before she got her hands on her "magical gloves", she would make music with an array of instruments and virtual instruments, along with Albeton music software: "Basically, inside this software I can play virtual instruments and loop things, add layers and textures that I spend hours working on in my basement. But I wanted to bring those sounds on stage with me. I strapped keyboards onto me, had microphones attached to my wrists so that I can mic up wine glasses or guitars or whatever I wanted to record. 02:37
Premiering on Tuesday 7th June, the first in a series of brand new ‘Future Cities' documentaries takes us inside Shenzhen, looking at how and why the city has evolved so rapidly. We examine the unique manufacturing eco-system that has emerged, gaining access to the world’s leading hardware prototyping culture whilst challenging misconceptions from the west. The film asks what the rest of the world can learn from the so-called ‘Silicon Valley of hardware’, and questions what may be next for Shenzhen itself. Gotye: A song recorded in countless homes and bedrooms | WIRED

14:27
As the final notes of Gotye's well known hit faded into silence, the Melbourne based musician Wally De Backer walked onto the Wired 2012 stage, mildly embarrassed that his worldwide hit was being played to the audience in "supremely mono-sounding audio... but then I'm picky given the amount of time I spend working on these tracks." Subscribe to WIRED ►► http://po.st/SubscribeWired Full story: http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2012-10/25/gotye De Backer carried out a simple yet powerful demonstration of the reach of his song Somebody that I used to Know: "Who was already familiar with that song and video? [The entire room raise their hand] Then I don't have to give much of a context for that video then. Maybe you've been assaulted by a fourteen-year-old throwing a dance remix of the song at you. I know that I certainly have." When the Gotye track reached the vastness of the internet, the musician had a "fascinating experience"; he was able to watch online as a song he had written and recorded mutated in untold ways -- meme images that played upon the lyrics of the song, countless versions of the song that were recorded in people's bedrooms, hundreds of videos. Even the mutations gained their own subesquent mutations -- one Canadian group's cover has gained over 200 million views from all over the world. For the full story on Simon Baron-Cohen Autism research and autism spectrum disorders on Wired: http://bit.ly/SmTS17 Subscribe to WIRED ►► http://po.st/SubscribeWired Scientists are more likely to show signs of autism, explained to psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen, speaking at Wired 2012. "People with autism show a broader interest in systems," he said. "You're trying to find the system, and find the mechanism behind how it works. I'm going to explore the idea that autism is linked to minds that are wired for science." Baron-Cohen, leader of the Autism Research Centre and trustee of the Autism Research Trust, cites an article written by Ioan James for the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, which claimed that historical scientists -- including Isaac Newton, Henry Cavendish, Marie Curie and her son-in-law Jean Frédéric Joliot-Curie, and Paul Dirac -- showed signs of autism. Albert Einstein, too, was "late to speak, and when he spoke he spoke with echolalia, where you repeat what people say back to them -- and apparently in his childhood he had no friends," Baron-Cohen says -- all characteristics on the autistic spectrum. Wired US even published an article in 2001 discussing the anecdotal evidence that children with autism were especially common among the offspring of Silicon Valley couples. The evidence, says Baron-Cohen, is that "scientists tend to score higher in terms of autistic traits than people in the general population", and those traits -- a love of systems, and an aptitude for analysing them -- can be passed on in some way. How the Natural History Museum is Scanning 80 Million Dead Creatures

03:49
The Natural History Museum in London has set itself the mammoth task of digitising its specimens - all 80 million of them. The museum's collection includes everything from a blue whale skeleton to Martian meteorites, making progress understandably slow. Head of Informatics Vince Smith says it would take around 1,500 years for the team to manually digitise it all, so in 2014 they decided to write software that allows them to do it in bulk. They now use six DSLR cameras to process up to 200 items at a time. WIRED went behind the scenes to meet the researchers working on the project and learn more about how they digitise the different specimens.
