Kevin Spacey urges TV channels to give control to viewers

04:55
Double Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey has challenged TV channels to give "control" to their audiences or risk losing them at his address at the James MacTaggart Memorial Lecture at the Edinburgh Television Festival. The Hollywood star, whose recent foray into television -- House Of Cards -- has been a commercial and critical hit after it was released on streaming service Netflix, said there was a danger of "thinking that something which is working now will necessarily work a year from now". Spacey, who gave the keynote James MacTaggart Memorial Lecture at the Edinburgh Television Festival this evening, said: "Clearly the success of the Netflix model -- releasing the entire season of House Of Cards at once -- has proved one thing: the audience wants control. They want freedom. If they want to binge -- as they've been doing on House Of Cards -- then we should let them binge." The actor said that way of working "demonstrated that we have learned the lesson that the music industry didn't learn -- give people what they want, when they want it, in the form they want it in, at a reasonable price, and they'll more likely pay for it rather than steal it". Spacey, who starred in and was also executive producer on the show which was nominated for nine Emmy Awards, warned the audience of media executives that "labels" were becoming meaningless and they risked being "left behind". He said: "If you watch a TV show on your iPad is it no longer a TV show? The device and length are irrelevant ... For kids growing up now there's no difference watching Avatar on an iPad or watching YouTube on a TV and watching Game Of Thrones on their computer. It's all content. It's all story." Cashpoint cons: how to spot a dodgy ATM

02:49
A police detective explains how fraudsters tamper with a cashpoint – and what to do if you become a target of ATM fraud. Hidden cameras and devices designed to steal your Pin and debit card at the cashpoint cheat British cardholders out of £27.3 million every year. Even the most harmless-looking ATMs can contain a card-trapping device and at the same time spy on your every movement as you type in your Pin number. Once a fraudster has your card and Pin details in hand, they can instantly withdraw your savings or empty your account on a spending spree. But how can you possibly tell if the cashpoint you are about to use has been tampered with? Tony Blake, fraud prevention officer from the police's card and payments unit, says cashpoint cons can be impossible to spot until you have become a victim. But it's not too late to protect your savings, as Mr Blake explains in the video, above, revealing what to do if you become an unlucky target. The Dawn Chorus can be heard in gardens, streets and parks in the early hours from March, reaching a crescendo in May, and lasting until June. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds said that in the past most people would have been able to identify the most common songs. In contrast the more recent generations find it more difficult to know how to identify any song beyond the obvious sound of the cuckoo and the wood pigeon. We've collated the birdsong of 10 species for you to be able to brush up your knowledge of bird calls. For more information on the birds in our video, go to the RSPB website

Becoming a Gurkha for the British Army

02:32
Hundreds of young Nepalese are put through their paces as they bid to joining the prestigious Brigade of Gurkhas. These Nepalese men, aged between 17 and 21, are among the final 300 competing to join the Brigade of Gurkhas. At the end of the two-week selection process only the 126 candidates with the highest score overall will be selected. Today's recruits need to be fitter and have more formal qualifications than their predecessors a generation ago. Among the requirements are a Standard School Leaving Certificate and ability to run 800m in two minutes 45 seconds, do 12 pull-ups and 70 sit-ups. Success will mean a Western salary and a pension for life, together with the right to settle in Britain. Failure will see them return to their villages with only their reimbursed bus fares in their pockets. But it is not just the money that attracts young men into the Gurkhas. As Nepal rises economically along with the rest of Asia, the old martial code of honour, the desire to travel and the thirst for adventure keep thousands of Nepalese boys applying to join the Gurkhas each year. The Last Islandman returns to his birthplace, the Great Blasket

05:48
The abandoned Great Blasket Island off the west coast of Ireland holds a special place in the heart of 92-year-old Dr Mike Carney who was born there. The Telegraph goes with him as he visits his birthplace for the last time. "I don't know if I will be able to make it," says Mike Carney, looking out across a wild stretch of water to the place where he was born 92 years ago. "I would like to put my feet down there one more time, but I wonder, is it possible?" Frankly, it seems crazy to try. The Great Blasket is famous throughout the world as a place where a remarkable community once lived, but it is remote, empty and inaccessible for most of the year. We are in the far west of Ireland and the weather is turning bad, making the ground treacherous underfoot. Dr Carney walks with a shuffle and wears a brace for his back. He is standing on the headland, looking out at the Blasket Sound. Under those waves there are many wrecks. To get to the island, the old man will have to negotiate a wet quayside, a rubber dinghy, a sharp climb up into a converted fishing boat and an hour's journey by sea, buffeted by the Atlantic waves. Then he will face the dinghy again and the derelict island slipway, slick with seaweed, leading to a steep rock path as slippery as ice. Yet he says: "I have the determination within me to do this." He has come a long way already to reach this point; more than three thousand miles from his retirement home in Massachusetts, then down the coast of Ireland from the airport to the far tip of the Dingle Peninsula, a finger of land that points back west. "I can't get the island out of my mind," says Dr Carney, with the strong accent of a man who grew up speaking only Gaelic and who has never let the language go. "I dream about the island at night. I dream about the way it was when we were young." The Great Blasket island was abandoned 60 years ago, as the result of a tragedy that had broken the hearts of the Carney family and their fellow islanders. The evacuation took place on 17 November 1953. Nobody has lived there permanently since. The houses are ruins. So what is calling Mike Carney now? Why is he risking his life to get back? Rare ride inside the world's last airworthy Vulcan

02:25
When the Avro Vulcan first took to the skies on 1 August 1952, it marked a departure from traditional aircraft design and function, at a time when Britain was facing nuclear threats from the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The jet-powered delta wing strategic bomber was the main British contribution to the Nato strategic nuclear deterrent and formed part of the V-Bomber triumvirate which included the Vickers Valiant and the Handley Page Victor. "We were the ones protecting this country from Soviet attack," says Martin Withers DFC, Chief Pilot at Vulcan to the Sky, who has been flying the planes since 1971. "It's a lovely aeroplane to fly because it's got big engines, big flying controls, it can turn at low speed, it doesn't fall out of the sky even at 50,000 feet, so it could outmanoeuvre any fighter of the era." The V-Bombers also made their mark during the Falklands war, leading the Black Buck attacks on Port Stanley airbase. However in 1993 the Vulcan was grounded, much to the dismay of thousands of the plane's fans, including Dr Robert Pleming, chief executive ofVulcan to the Sky, who in 1997 began to process of returning the Vulcan to the skies. "It was an amazing engineering achievement and I thought it was possible to return her to flight," says Robert. In 2007, ten years later, and at a cost of £7 millon, the last airworthy Vulcan flew again. Now, the bomber relies on charitable donations from the public to keep her in flight and can be regularly be seen at displays and tours across the country. Pussy Riot attacked with whips by police at Sochi

02:33
Russian punk group Pussy Riot is attacked by Cossack militia as they try to perform under a sign for the Sochi Olympics. Cossack militia attacked the Pussy Riot punk group with horsewhips on Wednesday as the group staged an impromptu performance under a sign advertising the Sochi Olympics. Six group members — five women and one man — donned their signature ski masks and were pulling out a guitar and microphone when at least 10 Cossacks and other security officials moved in. One guard appeared to use pepper spray, another whipped several group members while others ripped off their masks and threw the guitar in a rubbish bin. Police arrived and questioned witnesses, but no one was arrested. The Cossacks violently pulled masks from women's heads, beating group member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova with a whip as she lay on the ground. The incident lasted less than three minutes and one Pussy Riot member, a man wearing a bright yellow tank top, was left with blood on his face, saying he had been pushed to the ground. Pussy Riot, a performance-art collective involving a loose membership of feminists who edit their actions into music videos, has become an international flashpoint for those who contend Putin's government has exceeded its authority, particularly restricting human and gay rights. The group gained international attention in 2012 after barging into Moscow's main cathedral and performing a "punk prayer" in which they entreated the Virgin Mary to save Russia from Putin, who was on the verge of returning to the Russian presidency for a third term. Two members of the group, Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina, were sentenced to two years in prison, but were released in December under an amnesty bill seen as a Kremlin effort to assuage critics before the Olympics. Time capsule from 1914 opened in the US

01:40
A century-old time capsule, filled by long-gone Wall Street businessmen as been unsealed revealing a range of items, which document New York as a historic commercial hub at the time. Spectators at the New-York Historical Society gathered around the mysterious bronze box as workers wearing surgical gloves removed 26 screws keeping it sealed since 1914. Historian Nick Yablon removed the first of the items: a collection of documents and news reports depicting the New York businessmen's interests, from the pioneering tea, coffee and spice trade of the 17th century Dutch colony to contemporary baseball and bullfights. Inside there was also a message into the future as Mr Yablon explained: "There's also a telegram from the governor of New York which is partly addressed to the time capsule organiser, but also to the future governor of New York in 1974." The Lower Wall Street Business Men's Association who deposited the box with the historical society had asked that it be unsealed in 1974, but somehow, it was forgotten. A curator discovered it in the society's warehouse in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood. Windowless planes: is this the future of flying?

02:10
Display screens projecting the sky outside could line the cabin of aircrafts if windowless planes become reality Windowless planes could revolutionise air travel as airlines seek to reduce their spending on fuel and new supersonic aircraft are developed. With this in mind, a French design agency has released renderings showing its proposed design for a private jet completely devoid of windows in its fuselage. Instead, the cabin would be lined with thin screens that could display surrounding vistas or screen films and work presentations. Technicon Design states that removing windows from aircrafts will reduce their weight, thus reducing fuel and maintenance costs and giving designers greater opportunities to enhance and beautify their interiors. Gareth Davies, chief designer at Technicon Design, the company behind the concept, said: "Certain elements are already possible...such as the flexible displays. "The idea is to push the boundaries." He added that future technology would hopefully allow people to display whatever images they wanted, the content only being "limited by your imagination." For now, though, the technology remains only in the reach of the super-rich, but with the world's first commercial windowless plane already in the pipeline, it may be only a matter of time before the concept is adapted. US engineering firm Spike Aerospace is planning to launch a windowless cabin on board its luxury Spike S-512 Supersonic Jet in 2018, which the company says will feature similar display screen technology. RHS Chelsea wood charing: getting the Kyoto burnt oak effect

02:11
Christopher Bradley-Hole's design for The Telegraph garden features walls clad in charred oak. Joiner Tom Sims explains how he adapted an ancient Japanese technique for blackening the timber to produce a shimmering charcoal effect. The charred oak walls, which run around two sides of The Telegraph's Chelsea show garden, reference traditional houses of Kyoto. Historically created in charcoal fires, Tom Sims recreates the dark finish using an industrial blow-torch. "There is no stain or dyes or anything involved," Mr Sims said. "It's an ancient process developed in the Middle Ages or even earlier to burn the surface of the timber to produce a charred finish. "What this is going to do is give a nice dark effect; in fact sometimes some of the boards look like birds' feathers. They reflect the sunlight and you almost get the speckling like you do on a waterbird like a black moorhen." The darkness of the charred oak back wall will provide the perfect contrast with the blond oak colonade, which forms the geometric backdrop to the garden. Amateur treasure hunter uncovers £1m Viking hoard

01:13
A hoard of Viking treasure has been unearthed by a metal-detecting enthusiast in one of the most significant finds of its kind ever made in Scotland. More than 100 objects, some of them made of gold, were discovered on church land at an undisclosed location in Dumfries and Galloway, and is believed to be worth approximately £1m. The "historically significant" find was made by Derek McLennan, 47, a committed metal detectorist who had been searching the area for the last year. The rich hoard of artefacts, many of which are unique, includes some of Carolingian (west European) and Irish origin. The material comprises many silver ingots, armbands and brooches, as well as several gold objects, Scotland's Treasure Trove Unit announced. The hoard also includes a complete metal vessel containing more objects. It has not yet been emptied and the first step will be to examine its contents by x-ray techniques. Experts at the unit described the find as "one of the most significant Viking hoards ever discovered in Scotland". Head of the Treasure Trove Unit, Stuart Campbell, who is overseeing assessment of the hoard, said: "This is a very important and significant find and has required the close cooperation of Historic Scotland with Treasure Trove Unit and National Museums Scotland staff to recover the fascinating items it contains. "Due to the quantity and variety of the objects, and the importance of the find overall, it will take some time for experts to assess the hoard as a whole so that we can appreciate its true significance. We look forward to learning more." Playmobil at 40: behind the scenes at the 'people factory'

02:47
As Playmobil celebrates its 40th birthday, Harry Wallop goes behind the scenes at its Malta factory, where every one of its 2.7 billion plastic figurines have been made Forty years ago, the world was in crisis. Banks were collapsing, a US president resigned in disgrace, the price of oil had quadrupled. But in 1974, on the tiny island of Malta, a new world order was taking shape -- peopled by little, 2.9 inch plastic figures: Playmobil. In that first year there were just three men: a construction worker in stripy bib (no sign of high-vis jackets in those days), a knight with a silver helmet and an American Indian with a feather in his hair. Since then 3,995 different designs have come off the production lines in a slightly scruffy factory, along the road from Malta's airport.
